Summary: âI just feel like...like youâve given up us.â Philâs words hung heavily in the air, and after realizing he may have been right, Dan realized he needs to show Phil that he loves him more than ever.
Word Count: 3.2k
âI just feel like...like youâve given up us.â Philâs words hung heavily in the air, stinging Dan as if he had been slapped. It had been hours since Phil said it, but it hasnât left Danâs mind since. Like youâve given up on us. But of course Dan hadnât given up on them. Had he?
Granted, he hadnât been putting forth as much effort into their relationship as he normally does, and heâs been kind of checked out lately due to classes; but Phil was his everything. He was the only thing that made a bad day better. He was the only thing that would make him smile and laugh everyday. He was the only thing that really made his life worth living. So how could he have given up on them?
Dan grabbed his jacket and headed outside to get some fresh air to hopefully clear his mind. The air stung his exposed skin, but it was refreshing and shook him out of the daze he had been in all day. He staggered along the busy street, reflecting upon the past few months of their relationship and thatâs when realization hit -- maybe he hadnât been the best boyfriend. Dan felt his eyes well up as a fog seemed to lift from the past few months and he acknowledged that Phil was right: Dan had given up on their relationship. But he was determined to make sure the relationship didnât end because he was ignorant to the fact.
He continued to walk along the street, stopping to grab a coffee to warm his numb and bright red fingers. In the haste of leaving their flat, he didnât think to grab a hat or gloves. But then again, Dan never minded the cold. As he took a sip of his bitter black coffee, a small smile formed on his face as he was reminded of his first date with Phil. It was in a coffee shop, which was then followed by ice skating in Rockefeller Center. That was the day Dan knew he came across something special, and that he was never going to let Phil go. And that was the moment Dan knew exactly what he needed to do.
In too much of a hurry to walk home, Dan ended up calling a taxi. He was much too impatient for the mere fifteen minute walk. He was in such a hurry, in fact, that he bounded up the stairs of their flat, leaving him breathless as he bursted into his and Philâs living room. The living room was dark, and quiet but Dan saw light at the end of the hallways: Philâs room. While still attempting to catch his breath, he made his way to Philâs room, heart thudding. He softly knocked on the door before opening it to find Phil lying on his blue and green duvet, with headphones on as he blankly stared at the ceiling.
âPhil?â His voice shook with uncertainty. He wasnât even sure that Phil would listen to anything he had to say, after all. Phil jumped at his voice, and sat up, pulling off his headphones. He frowned as Dan panted in his doorway, cheeks red from the cold and eyes glossy. âI know you probably donât want to talk to me, but I need you to come with me. Right now,â Dan urged.
Phil bit his lip and frowned at the younger of the two. âGo where?â
âLook, I canât say but just trust me on this. Let me show you that I havenât given up on us and never will.â
Phil continued to stare, a slight frown etched on his face as he contemplated it. He had given Dan many chances to prove he hadnât given up on them over the past few months but he received nothing. So really why should he give him yet another one? But as Dan stood there, looking vulnerable and heart broken, Phil couldnât bring himself to say âno.â After all, this is what he had been waiting for.
âYeah, okay.â He said, finally, grabbing his jacket. He was still skeptical but him and Dan have history and he sure as hell wasnât giving up on them.
The two of them walked in silence: Dan unsure what to say, and Phil unsure what to expect. It was nearing dusk, which wasnât saying much considering it was nearly mid December. Christmas lights littered the trees along the streets, as a slight snow began to fall. Normally this would fill the two of them with happiness of the festive season, but now it was just dread as the uncertainly of their relationship hung in the air. Thankfully, the silence didnât last long as they reached the place Dan had in mind.
âA coffee shop?â Phil asked incredulously, staring at the old brick building.
âItâs not just any old coffee shop,â Dan muttered, and thatâs when Philâs eyes lit up with recognition.
âItâs where we had our first date,â He realized, a small smile forming on his face. Dan grinned, relieved and led him into the warm coffee shop. Phil grabbed a small table by the roaring fireplace while Dan ordered their usual drinks.
âDan, this is a sweet gesture and everything, but...â Phil started as he brought over the hot coffees.
âOh Phil, this is just the beginning of our night. Donât make any final decisions about us until itâs over, okay? Now here, drink this. Youâre going to want the caffeine.â
Phil just nodded, a little taken aback by this romantic gesture, especially since Dan wasnât one for them.
âI remember I was so nervous on my way over here for our first date,â Dan started, a smile forming on his face. âFrom the moment I had met you, I knew you were something special. Different than anyone I had ever met and I just didnât want to mess it up. My palms were so sweaty, regardless of the fact it was freezing and mid-November.â
âYou never told me you were that nervous! You walked in here so confidently.â
âThat was my goal, I didnât want you to know I was so nervous.â
âYou know, Dan, sometimes itâs okay to share your true emotions.â
âI know, itâs something I need to work on. And that I will work on.â There was a lull in the conversation, as both of their minds began to wander to when the relationship began to fall apart. âCome on,â Dan said softly. âLetâs move on, we have a few more stops for the night.â
Phil took one last drink of his coffee before tossing it in the trash and following Dan back into the frigid cold.
âWhere to next?â He questioned, a little excited now that he saw what Dan had planned for the night.
âPatience, my love. Youâll see soon enough.â As they walked down the crowded streets, dodging families with numerous shopping bags in their hands, it began to snow a little harder, so it was now a flurry. âI always did like snow,â Dan remarked, looking up at the peacefully falling snowflakes, blinking it away as it landed in his eyelashes. âIâm not the biggest fan of the cold, but the beauty of the snow makes it almost worth it.â
Phil smiled, âI agree, especially when it gets closer to the holidays. It makes everything seem much more magical.â
âWhen I was a kid, Iâd always get so worried when it snowed on Christmas Eve that Santa would have problems finding my house.â
Phil laughed at that -- a genuine laugh. âThatâs actually really cute.â
âTell that to my parents. They thought it was the most annoying thing because I would always cry when I was going to bed, afraid he would get in a sleigh accident or something.â
âYou know, Dan...your mind has always worked differently than anyone else I know.â
âIn a good way, I hope?â
âOf course,â Phil responded, smiling, his blue eyes lighting up. Dan returned his smile, and grabbed Philâs hand in his own.
âHereâs the second stop of the night,â Dan announced.
âWeâre going ice skating too?â Phil asked, looking over at the ice skating rink they went skating at on their first date.
âNo, we donât have time for that, and letâs be honest -- we were both terrible and the pain we were in the next day just wasnât worth that,â He said with a laugh. âBut I stopped here, because this also serves as an important landmark of our relationship. Do you remember our first kiss, Phil?â
âOf course I do, I could never forget it.â
âI had been wanting to kiss you all day, but like I said, I was just too nervous up until the end of the night when I finally did. There was a moment, actually that would have been perfect.â
âWhen we were ice skating, and I almost fell?â
âExactly!â Dan said, squeezing Philâs hand. âI caught you, and our eyes locked, and all I could think about was kissing you. I thought I was the only who noticed it.â
âNo, I definitely noticed it, too. In fact, I was hoping you would kiss me in that moment.â
âYou know, Phil, you could have always kissed me first,â Dan teased. Â
âHey, I get nervous too!â He joked. âBut in all honesty, our first kiss was perfect,â He added.
âYeah it was,â Dan said softly as Phil started to walk closer to the ice rink, reminiscent of their first date; but he didnât get very far because Dan grabbed his arm, and pulled him against him, and fervently pressed his lips against Philâs -- recreating their first kiss perfectly. Phil had been walking away, back towards his car when Dan finally gathered enough courage and pulled him against him, kissing him. And that was the moment. That was the moment Dan knew he had found someone special and that he had no intention of letting him go.
Phil pulled Danâs head closer to him and tangled his hand in his hair. Dan sighed into the kiss and forced himself to pull away. âCome on, we have a few more places to go to.â He entangled his hand in Philâs and hailed down a taxi to bring them to their next destination.
âTimes Square, please,â Dan informed the taxi driver as they piled in the backseat. Phil raised his eyebrows at that, but chose to not question it; he knew he would find out soon enough what was going on in Danâs complicated mind.
The taxi ride passed quickly as they made small talk with their driver, and as they came to a stop just outside of Times Square, Dan paid the driver and got back out into the cold air. Dan smirked at Philâs confused and slightly panicked face, as he tried to remember what milestone could have taken place here.
âDonât worry, you donât know about this milestone, so you arenât forgetting anything.â
âOh thank God, my mind was racing that entire taxi ride,â Phil sighed relieved. âSo, what is the milestone then?â
âFollow me,â Dan just said in response, grabbing his hand and pulling him into the heart of the city. âDo you remember when we spent New Yearâs Eve here, because we thought that would actually be a fun idea?â
Phil laughed, remembering the giant crowd and the frigid cold. âOf course, our relationship was still relatively new and we wanted to be adventurous so we decided to come watch the ball drop. And that was a big mistake.â
âA huge mistake,â Dan agreed laughing. âBut we were both freezing and miserable, and I didnât want to say anything because I was afraid you wanted to stay and I didnât want to make you leave --â
âWhich I didnât,â Phil corrected.
âWhich I didnât know at the time,â Dan continued. âBut then, you spoke up and asked if I Â just wanted to grab some pizza instead, and watch it on TV from your place.â
âWhich we did,â Phil said softly.
âAnd it turned out to be one of the best New Yearâs Eves ever. We went to that pizza place on the corner, and sat there and laughed at how naive we were, thinking that was going to be as fun as it looked on TV.â
âThen we went back to my place, drank and sat there and talked until it was just about midnight.â
âWe nearly missed seeing the ball drop, we were so engrossed in our conversation.â
âBut I set an alarm on my phone --â
âAnd we turned it on just in time, and kissed each other as the ball dropped.â
âThat was an amazing night,â Phil said, thinking back to that night nearly five years ago now.
âYeah, it was,â Dan agreed. âThat was also the night I realized I was in love with you.â
âWhat? You didnât tell me until the end of February!â
âI didnât want to scare you away by saying it too soon. But as we sat there on your couch, drinking and talking, I realized that I could do that with you every night and be the happiest guy on Earth. I didnât need to go out to have fun, because my happiness was sitting right next to me on your couch. I just needed to be next to you. And that still hasnât changed, I just need to be next to you, or near you and Iâm irrevocably happy.â
Phil didnât know what to say in response to that, so instead he just kissed Dan. He pulled him close to him, and rested his hands on his face, as he became overwhelmed by all of the love he has for his boyfriend. âI love you, Dan,â Was all that Phil could manage to say when he pulled away.
âI love you more,â Dan whispered against his lips. âNow we have two more stops planned for the night.â
âTwo more? Whatâs left?â
âYouâll find out shortly,â Dan replied with a smile, and he hailed down another taxi.
âDan, youâve proved you havenât given up, and so much more,â Phil said softly. âYou donât have to take me anywhere else.â
âIâm not doing it because I feel like I have to, itâs because I want to. Trust me on this,â He replied, giving his hand a squeeze as they got into the warm taxi. Dan rested his head against Philâs shoulder, sighing contently. While he was unbelievably happy he hadnât lost Phil, his stomach was flipping over what was next. These last stops were the most important of the night.
After paying the driver and getting out of the car, he felt his palms become sweaty again, but he chose to ignore that fact, and led Phil into Central Park. With it nearing upon Christmas, the trees were all lit with clear fairy lights, lighting the park; and with the snow peacefully fluttering down, it was one of those moments that Phil would typically describe as perfect.
âCentral Park? Weâve only been here a few times, and nothing remarkable happened,â Phil observed.
âYouâre right,â Dan replied, walking along one of the busier paths in the park. âAt least not until right now,â He added.
âI donât understand..â
âLook, Phil. I almost lost you once, and I canât let that happen again. Iâm madly in love with you, and thereâs no one that can make me as happy as you do. You make me feel like I can do anything and that nothing is impossible. And Iâve never felt that way before. You, are my soul mate and I canât imagine spending my life with anybody else.â Dan paused, as he saw Philâs face light up with realization of what he was doing. Taking a deep breath, Dan got down on one knee and pulled a small black, velvet box out of his pocket. âSo with that being said, will you marry me?â
âOf course I will, bear,â Phil exclaimed, pulling Dan up and kissing him like heâs never kissed him before. He put every ounce of love and happiness he had into that kiss and with the snow falling down around them, and the Christmas lights twinkling around them, Phil changed his mind from earlier: this moment was absolutely perfect. Dan pulled away, grinning and slid the silver band onto Philâs ring finger.
âNow we have just one more stop,â Dan whispered, before kissing Phil once more.
âWhat could possibly be left?â Phil wondered out loud, but was grinning nonetheless.
Dan and Phil didnât pay much attention their taxi driver this time around as they were too engrossed in each other for the ride over to downtown Manhattan. When they did get there, Dan led Phil inside the Empire State Building and to the Observatory.
âOur final stop,â Dan mumbled against Phil, as he pulled him in for another kiss. The elevator doors soon opened, as they had arrived to the restaurant thatâs in the observatory. Soft classical music played, and the lights were dimmed so one could see the New York skyline perfectly. âReservation for Howell,â Dan said to the hostess.
She led them to a secluded table, next to a big window looking over the entire city, with two glasses of champagne already set out for them, and a full bottle sitting chilled in ice.
âWhat would you have done if I said no?â Phil teased, taking a sip of the champagne.
âOh Phil, I knew I would you say yes,â Dan retorted.
âIs this that thing you do where you cover up your emotions with false confidence?â
âYou do know me too well,â Dan admitted. âI didnât even consider that option -- because honestly I couldnât even begin to think about that.â
Phil gazed at Dan and grinned. As amazing as the view of New York City was, he preferred the view sitting across from him.

By the time Dan and Phil arrived back to their loft, they were exhausted and headed straight to bed. Dan rested his head against Philâs chest, tracing circles as he was slowly falling asleep.
âHey, Dan?â
âHmm?â
âWhen did you buy this ring?â
Dan forced himself to sit up and wake up a little more for this conversation. âJust about six months ago,â He said, remembering very clearly the day he bought it.
âSix months?â
âYeah, I knew I was going to marry you, but I was planning on doing it after I graduated from college this year.â
âOh Dan,â Phil sighed, and opened his bedside drawer, pulling out a similar box. âI had that exact same plan.â Phil opened the box, to reveal a silver band similar to the one Dan bought him. âI also was planning on proposing to you when you finished college this year. I think I bought this about five months ago.â
Dan laughed at that, and slid the band on his ring finger. âGoddamn we are perfect together.â
âYeah we are,â Phil whispered as he softly kissed Dan. âI love you, bear.â
âI love you more.â Â

Summary: âI never thought losing you would be so hard,â Dan began, with a deep breath. He toyed with the strings of his grey hoodie, ignoring the stinging in his eyes.
A story which consists of Dan talking to Philâs grave and reflecting upon their life together.
Word Count: 3.7k
âI never thought losing you would be so hard,â Dan began, with a deep breath. He toyed with the strings of his grey hoodie, ignoring the stinging in his eyes. It was another bleak day in London; grey clouds were cast across the sky, on the constant verge of rain. Dan had thrown his hood up, partially to cover his messy hair and also as a preventative to the possible rain. âI mean, I knew it would be hard,â He continued, looking down at the green grass. âBut I never knew how much it would fucking hurt.â
He sat in silence for another minute, contemplating why he was here, talking to Philâs grave. Itâs not like he could hear him, right? Dan never had a strong belief in the afterlife, although after Philâs passing a little less than a month ago, he liked to wish he did. It would make losing him a little easier, knowing he was in a âbetter place.â He stared at the words âPHIL LESTERâ engraved into the cold stone as tears rolled down his cheeks. They thought they had all the time in the world together; they never expected an accident to take Phil lifeâs so soon. But then again, who does?
Dan brushed his tears off his face and decided to look down at the yellow flowers he brought, instead: something bright to lighten the dull. âMy family is worried, I havenât been answering any of their calls lately. I know theyâre trying to help, but I donât want to talk to them. I only want to talk to you. So, thatâs why Iâm here -- to talk. Fuck, Phil, I miss you so much. Since we met, I havenât gone this long without talking to you. Itâs like thereâs a giant hole in my chest that was ripped from me when I lost you.
âAnd everything reminds me of you; I canât do anything without breaking down as memories flood over me. Sometimes itâs comforting and other times it feels like theyâre killing me. You know, I woke up this morning, and for a moment I half expected you to be in the Kitchen already, drinking coffee and mixing your pancake batter, just like you would every Saturday morning. But then realization hit. And you know what I did?â Dan paused, a small smile on his face, as if he was waiting for Phil to respond.
âI got up, made some coffee and chocolate chip pancakes: just the way you like them. And for the first time I was okay. I smiled to myself, thinking back on all the Saturday mornings we spent like that, and all the times you tried to flip the pancakes in the air -- unsuccessfully, might I add. But then, I reached into the cupboard and grabbed two plates, and two forks and then I just froze, realizing you wouldnât be joining me. And thatâs when I lost it, Phil. I canât go an hour without my heart breaking because you arenât there.
âTo be quite honest, I donât know how I am going to live without you next to me. Youâre the one who could always calm me down when I was having a bad day, or worrying about the inevitable. You are the one who would help me sleep at night, when I couldnât shut my brain off. Now itâs just me, alone in the flat with a deafening silence. Everyone tells me it will get easier, and I hope it does. But I can promise you this, Phil: Not one day will go by, that I wonât think about you, and how much I love you.â
Dan couldnât go on any longer without completely breaking down, so he stood up and gingerly placed the flowers next to Philâs grave. He took one last look before trekking back to his car, to go back to his flat -- alone.
-
âIâm sorry itâs been so long,â Dan began, sitting cross-legged on the grass across from Philâs resting place. âI decided to go back home for awhile, I thought it would be nice to be surrounded by family. You know how I can get after being alone with my thoughts for too long.â Dan paused at that, wondering where to begin, or even how he should do this.
âYou know, on the train back to London, I kept thinking about some of my favorite memories of us together. My mum told me to focus on our happy memories, rather than the current situation, so Iâve been trying to do that lately. One of the things I thought back to was when I got sick with the flu last year, and you only left my side to make me some soup or get me some medicine. I told you not to, because I would only get you sick. But regardless of that, you stayed by my side and held me against you as we watched movies all day. And sure enough, two days later the roles were reversed.
âYou were the one lying in our bed with the chills and a fever, and I was now taking care of you. We spent the whole week confined to our flat, watching movies and old reruns of our favorite shows. Thereâs something about that memory that makes me feel happy, and warm inside. At first I wasnât sure what it was, but now I think I do -- it was that feeling of being cared for. We spent the entire time wrapped in each otherâs arms as we waited out the flu and while I felt terrible, I was irrevocably happy. Itâs the little things like that in life with you that Iâll really miss.â
Dan sighed and traced Philâs name with his finger, a smile smile forming on his face. Like he said, life hadnât gotten easier, but the pain from his loss was becoming more manageable. âI still miss you so much, and itâs the worst at night. Our bed feels so empty, and your pillow still smells like you. On nights when itâs really bad, Iâll close my eyes, hold your pillow close and I swear youâre next to me again.â He paused, taking a deep breath to steady himself.
âIâve started using your shampoo recently, too. I know it sounds dumb but itâs the little things like your scent that I never want to forget. But anyway,â Dan said, clearing the lump out of his throat. âIâm really going to work on focusing on the good instead of the bad. Iâve always had a problem with that, you know that better than anybody. But Iâm really going to try. Iâm going to remember you and all of our great memories together. I love you Phil.â
-
Dan slammed his car door, and pulled his jacket tight against his body. It was a windy fall day, and the air had that chill in it, that warned you winter was coming. As he approached Philâs grave, Dan carefully laid the flowers down he got for them -- this time they were a vibrant orange. Every time he stopped to buy flowers, he always picked the brightest ones they had; after all, thatâs what Phil deserves.
âHey Phil,â Dan said softly, sitting in his usual spot, across from his grave. âThought itâd be nice to come see you and talk to you today. I hope wherever you are, if you can hear me, youâre doing okay and youâre happy. You of all people, deserve happiness. And Iâm doing better. Each day is a little easier. Itâs still painful to be without you, but I can manage the pain a little better now. I still miss you more than ever.
âI saw Chris and PJ last night. Theyâve been helping me through this a lot lately, and itâs good for all three of us. Itâs weird not to have you, and your borderline inappropriate jokes there with us,â Dan laughed at that, he loved Philâs unique sense of humor. âI miss your laugh a lot, by the way. I miss the way it would start off quiet, like a chuckle, and then slowly build into something bigger and louder than that. God, I loved your laugh, I donât think I told you that enough.
âLast time I was here, I told you about my mumâs advice Iâve decided to take, where I focus on the positives. Actually, thatâs been helping a lot. When my sorrow starts to take over, I write. I write, and write and write. I nearly have a whole notebook filled with memories of us.â He grabbed the notebook, and thumbed through it, stopping about halfway through it.
âThis one I wrote a few days ago. We had decided to actually go out for once on a Friday because PJ was having a party. I remember we got there, and there was people everywhere, feeling the buzz off their drinks. And you and I--â Dan laughed softly to himself. âWell, we were way too sober for this. So we grabbed a cup of that mystery punch which was absolutely disgusting, and neither of us could finish our cup.
âAnd that of course, made socializing all night that much harder. But then, you came up with one of your genius ideas. You dragged me into his kitchen, with a big smile on your face and your eyes had that glint to them. Your hand was wrapped around mine, and you grabbed a bottle of wine and led me to the bathroom. You locked the door behind us, and we ended up sitting in the bathtub, taking turns drinking out of the bottle and just talking. We always had a habit of leaving parties to be alone, but I always loved that.
âWe stayed in there and talked and drank for nearly the whole night until we ended up passing out. What I loved the most, is that we didnât even talk about anything of substance. You told me about your theory that aliens exist, and I just sat there smiling, in complete awe of you and how in love with you I was. The way your whole face would light up when youâd talk about something that you were passionate about. God, I loved that.â Dan paused, grinning for the first time in over two months.
âEven when youâre the reason Iâm heartbroken, youâre the only one who can cheer me up,â He observed, chucking.
-
The weather continued to get colder as it neared the end of November. Dan trudged towards the grave, blue flowers in hand this time. His black winter jacket was zipped high, in attempts to block out the cold, and his hood was up. Small snowflakes drifted down, settling on the dry yellow grass, only to melt immediately after. Dan sat on the ground, as usual and set down the flowers.
âHappy Anniversary, Phil.â Dan sighed, looking down at his shoes as a gust of wind blew, stinging his exposed skin. But he didnât care about the cold; all he cared about was Phil. âI meant to come here in October, to celebrate when we first met in person, but I couldnât bring myself to. Instead I laid in our bed and watched your old videos the whole day. I know thatâs no excuse, but I just couldnât do it,â Danâs voice cracked at that, and he wiped a tear away.
âBut Iâm here now. Last year we celebrated our Anniversary in Manchester, and now Iâm celebrating it at a graveyard. It just makes losing you so much harder.â He paused once again, and leaned against the cold stone, closing his eyes.
âI started working back at BBC again, this last week was my first day back and I hated doing it by myself. One of the producers suggested they find me a new partner to do it with and you shouldâve seen my face when they said that,â Dan laughed at that. âHe looked like he was going to be sick. It feels good though, to get back in a routine -- staying busy gives me less time to be sad. Iâve been making a lot of videos lately, too. I havenât uploaded any of them, though. Itâs harder for me to feel like theyâre adequate without you there to reassure me. But I think when I get home I might upload one -- I know thatâs what youâd want me to do.
âCan you believe itâs already been seven years since we started dating, though? Well, almost seven years, at least. It doesnât feel like itâs been that long, it went by really fast.â There was a moment of silence as Dan thought back over the years. He leaned his head against Philâs name and wiped away a few more tears.
âI donât know if me coming here does any good, or if you can hear me for that matter but I like it. Itâs comforting to me, as if Iâm talking to you once again. I hope you can hear me though,â Dan muttered and looked up at the sky. âAnd if you can, I love and miss you more than anything.â

âMerry Christmas, Phil,â Dan stated, placing bright red flowers on his grave. âI decided to come back from holiday early so I could spend part of Christmas with you, like we always do. Your mum actually invited me to come celebrate with them next week, which was wonderful of her. I think Iâm going to go, too. Itâd be nice to see your family, theyâre dealing with your loss too so I think itâd be good for us.
âTo be honest with you, I thought the holidays would be harder without you here. But then again, how often have we actually spent Christmas together? Normally weâre hours apart, but now, knowing that you arenât hours away sucks. I donât know how else to put it. I went to the store on the way here, and bought a Christmas cracker, because I know how much you love them.â
Dan grinned at that, and reached in his pocket, popped it open and emptied the contents, placing the flimsy yellow paper crown on Philâs grave. He put the piece of candy in his mouth and reached for the joke. âAlright, brace yourself for a terrible pun,â He warned, unfolding the piece of paper. âOh for fuckâs sake. What does Santa suffer from if heâs stuck in a chimney?â Dan paused, knowing if Phil could hear him he would be trying to guess. âClaustraphobic. Okay, thatâs not the worst one weâve had, Iâll give it a two and a half out of five.â
âWell anyway, I hope wherever you are, youâre having a good holiday. Weâll celebrate together again one day, I just know it. Iâll come back and see you soon.â
-
âWell, Happy Birthday Phil,â Dan announced, crouching next to the grave and laying a bouquet of a combination of bright colors on the grave. There was far too much snow for him to take his usual perch on the grass. âI hope youâre celebrating today, after all youâre thirty which makes you sound so old,â He joked. âTonight, most of our friends and I are getting together to celebrate you and your life. We thought itâd be nice to all get together and celebrate how amazing you were, and wow I hate myself for making that terrible, unintentional pun.
âI also hate using past tense when I talk about you. Because even if you are gone, youâre still all of those things you were when you were alive. Youâre still my best friend and my other half. Youâre still the most incredible person I have ever met, and ever will meet. Nothing and no one will change that, I can promise you that.
âYour mum misses you like crazy, too,â Dan continued. âWhen I spent the week with them for holiday, her and I had a nice long chat about you, and how weâre coping. Going there helped a lot, actually. She suggested we do that every year, and I think I would like that. Martyn is doing well, too. I thought youâd want to know that.â

Soon the weather began to turn from bitterly cold to beautiful outside as the snow melted, unveiling green grass beneath it. Dan laid down vibrant sunflowers and sat on the grass once again. âItâs been awhile,â He said softly. âIâve uh--moved out of London. I didnât want to, to begin with. But after a lot of thinking, I thought it would be nice for a change of scenery. Iâm trying so hard to get my life together again, and itâs so hard when everything Iâm surrounded by when I wake up and go to sleep reminds me of you.
âSo I sold our flat. It was tough at first, but itâs helped a lot. I kept your blue and green duvet though, and I ended up getting rid of mine. I still needed a reminder of you, and to be honest, it still kind of smells like you, too. I never want that scent to leave. Iâm still working at BBC, in fact I have a regular show now, every day in the evening. You would love it, you really would. I still think of you, everyday by the way. The little things remind me of you, but instead of it bringing pain to me, I smile. I think Iâm starting to heal.
âI donât think I will ever fully heal, there will always be that part of me missing from when I lost you. But I know that everything will eventually be okay. I still have memories of you, and thatâs better than nothing. Â Like I said nearly a year ago, Iâm trying to focus on the positive.â

âHey Phil,â Dan greeted, sitting on the soft grass. It had been nearly two years now, since his passing. With Dan moving out of London, it made it more difficult for him to come visit. Life had gotten busy, but that doesnât mean he ever forgot about Phil. Everyday he thought about him, but unfortunately he was just unable to make it back as often as he wanted. âI got a haircut, itâs a little more edgy than I wanted, but I know you would like it a lot. Martyn is engaged now, too. I know youâd love to see how happy he is.
âLetâs see..this past year has been...eye opening. Iâve recently realized how short life is and that it can abruptly come to an end in an instant. So Iâve started living more in the moment. Iâd rather you were still here, but Iâm making sure to live life to the fullest, in your honor. I like to think that would make you happy.â There was a moment of silence and Dan picked at the grass.
It feels like it had been so long since he had come here, and coming back has brought up a lot of raw emotions that he had buried deep inside of him. His eyes strayed to the white flowers he brought today and he managed a smile. While time had passed, and things in life had changed, Phil was still a constant. He may not physically be there, in Danâs life, but he could always come and talk to him and that was reassuring.
âI miss you more than I can put into words, Phil,â He muttered so quietly that it wouldnât have been heard unless someone was listening closely.
And itâs a good thing Phil was.

Phil smiled when he saw Dan approaching his grave, with red flowers in hand. It was another beautiful summer day, the sun was shining, giving everything a warm glow and the grass was green and soft. No matter how busy Dan became, he always came back this time every year.
âHi Phil,â Dan began, like usual. By this time, Phil knew the drill. Dan would catch him up on what was going on in his life, and in Philâs family, which he loved. Last year he learned he had become an uncle and that Dan had earned a primetime slot at BBC, and he couldnât be more happy for him.
âI should probably start off by telling you how adorable your niece is. She has the bluest eyes, and the biggest smile. She reminds me a lot of you, actually, and sheâs always laughing. You would absolutely love her.â Phil smiled at that and took Danâs word for it.
âAs for me,â He continued, and Phil focused his attention back to Dan. He looked much older, his hair was shorter than last time, but he looked happy. âI met someone. I never thought I would, after I lost you. I mean, I never wanted to, either. But this guy -- he makes me feel alive and happy again. Donât get me wrong, Phil, no one will ever make me as happy as you made me, and no one can ever compare. But I think this is my chance at happiness again.
âI think this is what youâd want me to do, anyway. And itâs already been six years since -- since youâve passed. Iâve had a long chat with my mum and she thinks Iâm ready too.â Danâs breath hitched and he took in a deep breath.
Philâs face split into a smile at the news. Heâs been waiting for Dan to tell him that for years now. All heâs ever wanted in life - and in death - is for Dan to be happy. And it seems like heâs finally getting that chance again.
âLike I said, this will never change how I feel about you. Each and every day, I think about how I miss you and how happy you made me.â Dan rested his head in his hands, as grief overtook him and sobs racked through his body. âI love you Phil, and I always will.â
Phil smiled as his own eyes watered and sat next to Dan on the grass. âI love you too, bear and nothing will change that.â
Danâs head shot up at that, unsure if he heard what he think he did, or whether that was just the wind.
He likes to think it wasnât the wind.
Authorâs Note:Â So I decided to try a different type of writing, where the story consists mostly of dialogue in order to challenge myself, and this is what came out of it! Iâm not exactly sure how I feel about it, so please let me know what you think, it means a lot to me! I was also talking with my amazing beta (@emiliadawes) and you can officially look forward to my next chaptered fic, making its debut very soon! If I get a lot of feedback, I might even reveal a hint on what itâs about (;
