Books & Me 📚
Thank you for the tag Erika @kedsandtubesocks!! I love this hehehe.
The last book I read: This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews. Loved it; an amazing rec from @persimmonteas!!
A book I’d recommend: The Unicorn Hunters by Katherine Arden. I also read this very recently and loved it for its gorgeous atmosphere, which Katherine Arden does like no other writer for me!!
A book I couldn’t put down: The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. I read this a couple years ago while I was in Italy lol. Something about summer time & sunshine makes it easier for me to read suspense/crime/true crime, and I devoured this almost in a single beach visit.
A book I’ve read twice or more: The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. The most perfect book there ever was and my yearly reread. I only didn't put this as "a book I'd recommend" bc I've said it a million times.
A book I’ve put down: Lights Out by Navessa Allen. I'm sorry booktok girlies, I tried. :(
A book on my wish list: Protector by Madeline Hunter. After TUH & a spate of Johanna Lindsey novels, I'm apparently in my medieval romance era.
A favorite book from childhood: BUNNICULA!! I took this out of my library like once a month as a kid lmao.
A book I’d give to a friend: This fully depends on the friend and their taste. If they are a reader, maybe A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid (which Mermie gave me btw, amazing gift); a haunting love letter to folktales & stories.
A book of poetry or lyrics that I own: Sailing Alone Around the Room by Billy Collins. My mom's favorite poet.
A nonfiction book that I own: Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism by Kristen Ghodsee. Got it as a gift & full transparency I've not read it yet but I'll report back. 🫡
What I’m currently reading: I'm starting The Swan's Daughter by Roshani Chokshi in my bathtub tonight lol.
What I’m planning on reading next: I am going to reattempt A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine!!
a few no pressure tags: @persimmonteas @ofmermaidstories @cat-slippered @lorelune @aquafabaaaa @saintshigaraki @yinyuedijun @willamycin
Books & Me 📚
Thanks for the tag, @andypantsx3! Fellow book and pasta lover.
The last book I read: The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. Really enjoyed the atmospheric magic, examination of what makes life worth living, and black haired men. Promptly went to go find fic of my preferred ship (ty, @veratrance).
A book I’d recommend: I’ll give two very tonally different recs:
This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews. It’s an isekai where the MC lands in a historical-ish fictional world of an unfinished book series that she’s reread like 30x and knows all the lore intricacies. and now she has to navigate trading secrets, not dying, and hot men. My favorite book published in 2026 so far.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Heartwrenching reminder of why feminism and history matters.
A book I couldn’t put down: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. This book was so fun. Did I understand all the science? No. Do I love Eva Stratt? Yes.
A book I’ve read twice or more:
Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. A sweet slow burn of an academic falling in love, realizing her sexuality, dealing with her career goals and good ole sexism and homophobia.
I also love the Innkeeper series by Ilona Andrews if you want to read about a cozy bed-and-breakfast with aliens, werewolves, vampires, and a giant hedgehog that can cook.
A book I’ve put down: Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan. I feel like this book was designed in a lab for me, an Asian who loves Chinese mythology and fantasy. But alas. It was so meandering and the emotional core was lacking for me.
A book on my wish list: The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I hear that the Fanning sisters are producing a movie based on it!
A favorite book from childhood: Kodocha by Miho Obana manga series. It’s out of print now, but I was very fond of the character antics and plot.
A book I’d give to a friend: Body's a Bad Monster by Rowan Perez AKA @inkskinned. It’s a gutting yet beautiful autofiction book with an experimental structure and timeline jumps. I’d give it to a friend who is experiencing unraveling relationships and wants a place to land that feels like understanding and home.
A book of poetry or lyrics that I own: When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities by Chen Chen. It’s so evocative and really encapsulates growing up and carving out your own identity.
A nonfiction book that I own: Encyclopedia of Discovery: Science and History, published by Fog City Press. My dad bought this for me when I was a child, and I’ve been obsessed with the illustrations and the historical overview of ancient Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome since then.
What I’m currently reading: yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke for book club. I know it’s based on ballerinafarm and other currently popular trad wife influencers, but it almost pulls too much from the influencers that I’m having a hard time getting immersed and I wonder how relevant this book will be in a few years.
What I’m planning on reading next: Maybe the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews?? Also toying with reading I Deliver Parcels in Beijing by Hu Anyan based on a rec from @ghost-flakes.
a few no pressure tags because I think y’all would have great book recs: @hiddenworldofmary @honeyslambam @milkcutea @mal-co-holic @stargazerinaboat @veratrance @longblackliterature @housedemarr @ghost-flakes @shinaus + anybody following me pls i love a good rec
RIP Sisyphus he would've loved emails.

What food from their 'cultures' do you think the gang would like? Real life food
Oh, this will be a fun question to answer! I'll make this an ongoing series for as many characters as I can think of.
Favorite Foods: Aang
Seeing as Aang has always loved traveling the world on Appa, he strikes me as someone who prefers food he can easily carry and eat while in the air. He's more a snack guy than a meal guy, is what I'm saying. He's also shown to be very fond of egg custard tarts and fruit pies, so I assume he also really likes rich desserts. With these considerations in mind, here's Aang's food board:
Momos - Tibetan stuffed dumplings. They're easy to carry around and eat on the go. Plus, they share a name with everyone's favorite flying lemur. I think Aang's favorite momo filling would be cheese with mushrooms or veggies.
Shom-Dae - Tibetan rice pudding. It's made by mixing fresh steamed rice with yogurt and sugar. Tibetan yogurt is made from yak milk, so it's very rich in fat content. Yogurt is so beloved in Tibet that it even has its own festival there, called Sho Dun.
Bhatsa Marku - A cheesy dessert pasta from Tibet. The primary ingredients are gnocchi-like noodles, dried yak cheese, butter, and sugar. I've also seen non-dessert versions comprised of the gnocchi noodles with mushrooms and butter. I think Aang would love both.
Chhurpi - A rock-hard cheese traditional to the Himalayas. It's typically a yak cheese that has been smoked and dried to remove all the moisture content. This allows it to be easy to carry and transport, as it can remain mold-free and edible for up to 20 years. One cube of chhurpi can be chewed on for hours, as it takes quite a while for the cheese to soften in the mouth.
Ngarchur - A dried Tibetan sweet cheese made from boiled yogurt. Like chuurpi, it's keeps well and is easy to transport, although it's not hard.
Khapse - Tibetan fried dough. Depending on how you shape the dough, it can be crunchy like chips or soft like youtiao.
Sanga Balep - A crispy Tibetan pastry covered in powdered sugar. Not much to say other than it looks really satisfying to eat.
I also have a series on possible Air Nomad cuisine here:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Like what I’m doing? Tips always appreciated, never expected. ^_^

You actually cannot skip to being good at a creative endeavour that you haven't put much practice into. You cannot trick your way out of the 'knows that your work is not what you want it to be but don't know how to improve it' stage by planning or reading or talking about it really really hard. At some point you just have to craft through it until your brain finds it's own unique way back to the 'everything I make slaps' stage and be prepared to start the cycle all over again. You just have to make that project you're excited about slightly less good than you want it to be. (Says this standing in a pool of blood and covered in blood and also coughing up a little blood)

I really, really love the way Maggie has laid out a field of tropes at the beginning and then gets to just fucking frolic through them throughout the story. My lobster too buttery, my steak too juicy, etc. (spoilers beneath the cut)
"I was meant to appear in this new world as a woman of prophecy with magic holy powers so I could assist the kingdom with their blight or curse problem. I would be met by a prince or some high-ranking and stunning noble, and upon heroically demonstrating my abilities, I would become the center of attention, while a gaggle of ridiculously handsome men followed me around, pledged their swords to me, and pleaded with me not to overexert myself."
"You have me, Maggie," he said. "I don't know the future, but I know the present, and I've decided to walk this path with you. As long as you will have me by your side, I won't allow anyone to harm you." - Reynald Karis, page 168
Across the table, Everard leaned back in his chair, thinking. He looked cold and regal right now, like some dark monarch contemplating an invasion. // "Be careful in the Citadel. Take care of yourself." // There was genuine care in his voice. - Ramond vi Everard, page 246
"Would you like to borrow a carriage, my lady?" he asked. // "Is it that obvious?" // He smiled. It softened his harsh face, turning him unexpectedly handsome. // "As a knight with others under my command, it is my job to recognize when someone is hiding pain. You have done so much for us. Please allow me this one small courtesy." - Earl Bellen, page 257
"I'm not your lord, but I could be." // He said it like a come-on, but there was a threat wrapped in that smoldering voice. - The Man From the Garden, page 270
"I can walk." // "Please, my lady, I couldn't possibly tolerate you overexerting yourself in my presence." - Earl Bellen, page 381
"This is too much, really. I can pour my own tea." // "You are so easy to overwhelm, Lady Maggie. You must endeavor to be more demanding." //// "If I didn't know better, my lord, I'd think you're trying to sweep me off my feet." // "I am," he said. "Is it working?" - Earl Bellen, page 384, 385
"...Lute and I talked it over. The Sleepless Duke is a force, but you were the one who kept the old man from dying. You have my axe and Lute's sword." - Willem Magnar, page 389
Arvel was looking at me like I was a delicious snack. // His blue eyes were so warm and there was just a hint of vulnerability in their depths. The shadow of longing. "I think you could be that to me," he said. // His voice murmured in my ear. "What do you want, my lady? What do you really want? Tell me and I will make it yours." - Lord Arvel, the dance from hell
We stepped away from each other and came together. His face was entirely too close. His voice was an intimate caress. "Does he know you led me around on a leash?" - Silveren, the dance from hell
"Failing that, I could wake up in the body of the female lead, usually a daughter of a prominent noble house...I would pretend to suffer from amnesia, while an army of maids waited on me hand and foot, and plot my revenge, during which I would be fawned on by a dangerous and ice-cold male lead, who would turn into a devoted puppy in my vicinity."
"I'm going to destroy Ulmar Hreban." - Maggie, page 88
I was sitting on the wall in a magical city, and a hot, deadly swordsman had brought me tea and pastries and was entertaining me with his war stories. - Maggie, page 170
If I didn't know better, I'd say Reynald Karis, the ice-cold blademaster of Rellas, found me endearing. - Maggie, page 224
Black smoke slid off Everard, spilling onto the floor. His eyes blazed with green. // Cold sweat slicked my back. I couldn't help it. It was an instinctual, knee-jerk reaction. // "Sol," he said, pronouncing each word slowly, "she is mine." - Ramond vi Everard, page 236
He picked me up and started up the stairs. My face was only a few inches from his. His arms were rock steady. His profile was harsh, as if it had been carved from stone, but he carried me as if I were made of glass. He was so gentle. // "May I stay and watch over you?" - Ramond vi Everard, page 285
Everard crouched by me and took my hand in his. His eyes were so warm, his face reassuring and sincere. The feel of his fingers on mine sent little shivers down my spine. // "You don't have to make this decision right now," he said. "Or at all. Use me. Let me be your shield. Let me take care of you." - Ramond vi Everard, page 309
"You were a refugee, you lost your memory, and my aunt, who always wanted to have a daughter, saved you from the street." - Solentine Dagarra, page 310
"Welcome to the family, Marigold Demarr." - Solentine Dagarra, page 311
"If I worked that hard for the sake of someone my domain needed, I wonder how far I would go for the sake of someone I truly want?" - Ramond vi Everard, page 337
"You made it seem as if I have much more influence over you than I do." // "I believe I'm the ultimate authority on the amount of influence you have over me." - Ramond vi Everard, page 361
"Fuck the future. If I come back here and find you gone, I will level this damn city. If you care for Kair Toren, come with me." // I had to put some distance between us. I stood up. He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me close, and rested his forehead against mine. - Ramond vi Everard, 371
Everard looked at me. "I want to be with you and just you. If you never told me another secret again, I would still want you. Nobody can take you away from me. Not Arvel, not Sauven, not the Archmage, not the entirety of the Crimson Empire. The only person who can come between us is you. And I promise you, from this point on, I will bring the full power of everything I am to win you over. You will put your hand in mine, Maggie, and you will do it gladly." -Ramond vi Everard, page 443
