                                  it    just    slipped    my    mind.    the    excuse    echoes    inside    peri's    head    and    all    she    can    do    is    let    out    a    short,    disbelieving    laugh.    whether    it's    true    or    not    hardly    matters    at    this    point.    they    work    together.    they    see    each    other    almost    every    day.    promotion    or    no    promotion,    they're    still    supposed    to    function    as    a    team.    at    some    point,    the    other    person    should    have    crossed    his    mind.    she    knows    she    would    have    thought    of    him    if    their    positions    were    reversed.    the    disappointment    stings.    “    thought    you    were    better    than    this,    ”    she    says,    the    frustration    slipping    through.    a    sigh    follows    as    she    drags    a    hand    through    her    hair.    “    it's    not    that    bad?    ”    she    repeats,    staring    at    him    in    disbelief.    “    the    event    is    already    happening    and    i    did    absolutely    nothing    to    contribute.    do    you    know    how    embarrassing    that    feels?    everyone    else    is    out    there    doing    their    part    while    i    look    like    i    couldn't    even    be    bothered    to    show    up    prepared.    ”

                                  everything    coming    out    of    her    friend’s    mouth    sounds    like    complete    gibberish    right    now.    just    a    bunch    of    words    floating    around    that    peri    can’t    quite    piece    together.    eyes    narrowed    in    concentration,    she    stares    at    mia’s    mouth    as    if    carefully    reading    her    lips    will    somehow    make    everything    click    into    place.    it    doesn’t    help    that    she’s    trying    to    stay    balanced    at    the    same    time.    the    world    already    feels    slightly    tilted    beneath    her    feet.    somewhere    in    the    middle    of    all    that    effort,    though,    she    catches    two    words.    surprise.    fun.    and    honestly,    that’s    enough    for    her.    “    okay,    okay!    ”    she    says    excitedly,    nodding    far    too    enthusiastically.    unfortunately,    that    turns    out    to    be    a    terrible    idea.    the    second    she    does,    a    wave    of    dizziness    crashes    into    her    and    her    stomach    immediately    protests.    peri    squeezes    her    eyes    shut    for    a    moment,    swallowing    hard    while    doing    her    absolute    best    not    to    throw    up    right    then    and    there.    thankfully,    she    manages    to    keep    the    nausea    where    it    belongs.    “    a    piggy-back    ride?    ”    she    gasps,    eyes    lighting    up    immediately.    “    i’m    so    lucky!    ”    she    doesn’t    even    give    mia    the    chance    to    crouch    down    first.    instead,    she    stumbles    behind    her,    throws    her    arms    around    her    shoulders,    and    practically    latches    onto    her    from    the    back.    her    cheek    presses    against    the    back    of    mia’s    head    as    she    lets    out    a    satisfied    hum.    “    you’re    the    best,    ”    she    mumbles,    words    still    slightly    slurred.    “    five    stars.    excellent    service.    ”
