About your KPDH idea. I have some knowledge on Korean mythology and your idea isn't really hard to translate into something that works with the mythology but my explanation would be a bit long bc im a passionate yapper. Are you interested?
Absolutely. I love when people yap to me because I myself am a yapper. teach me mythology I am READY ✏️🗒️
To preface I'm not as intimately familiar with Korean myth culture as an actual Korean citizen so there are probably some inaccuracies especially bc I’m just doing a quick breakdown.
Korean myths stem from indigenous beliefs, Confucianism and Bhuddism so they don't have heaven, hell and angels as you'd see them in Abrahamic religions. This also makes it kind of complex to explain lol. The most important thing though is that their underworld is very bureaucratic and that souls are very important.
It’s said that the soul(hon) lingers for four generations, and the soul is guided to the underworld to pass through the 10 Kings and be judged by King Yeomna(Yama) the ruler of the underworld in order to enter the reincarnation cycle.
That’s what makes Gwi-Ma such a problem in the film, he’s unnatural. He actively orders the deaths of humans bypassing the established 'rules' the underworld follows and he eats souls that are meant to move on. It's also important note that he consumes the souls immediately bc it's believed that the soul is vulnerable within the first 50 days of death.
Even more unnatural is how he collects them, we see Jinu and other spirits in black gat and hanbok leading and enabling lesser demons to collect the souls. They’re Jeoseung Saja (저승사자-grim reapers) but wrong. Jeoseung Saja are neutral forces. They're workers for King Yama and they’re sometimes portrayed as sinners who are guiding souls in atonement for their sins in life.
Then there’s whatever is going on with the patterns he uses to control the demons. His minions, save the saja boys, are akgwi (악귀 -evil spirits) so it’s very strange how he managed to get what are essentially spirit cops to do his bidding.
Where your reader could come in is where the hunters get involved. The first hunters we see were actually mudang(무당), a female shaman(무-mu). That's why song and dance are so integral to the plot bc alot of rituals mudang preform involve song and dance. Mudang act as the go between for spirits and humans and do all sorts of rituals from communication with lingering spirits to healing. They're also said to be possessed by either ancestral spirits or deities which is what allows them to communicate with the supernatural. Your character could be an ancestral spirit to a mudang, maybe even for one of the Huntr/x girls. Or even the spirit of a shaman themselves.
If you need clarification on any of what I said feel free to ask bc even if I don't know I love researching haha!
