Album of the Day: Global a Go-Go by Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros

I honestly don't know why Joe Strummer's solo albums didn't sell better. There's such a majesty to his presence that comes through in the music; here on his second album with the Mescaleros, he creates a sort of positive-but-weary folk reggae sound that just fucking works. It's such a great listen.

Global a Go-Go was released 25 years ago today on July 24, 2001.

Movie of the Day: Godzilla vs. Hedorah

One of the worst-reviewed Godzilla movies of all time is one of my absolute faves. I know a lot of people like a real serious Godzilla movie, but this is the way I think they should be. The theme song that's almost James Bondian, the kid who thinks Big G is a hero, the colorful nightclub scenes, animation, one of the best kaiju of all time (Hedorah) with the timely environmental message, the wacky humor intertwined with the fight scenes. It's near-perfect.

And all these years later, what do people focus on? Godzilla using his atomic breath to fly and how loopy it seems. Gee, sorry to break the grim reality of your series about guys in rubber suits sumo wrestling each other.

People miss a lot of cool, fun shit because they're too caught up in whether or not their interests make them seem "cringe." Couldn't be me. I like enjoying things, and I enjoy liking things.

Even the producer of this movie, Tomoyuki Tanaka, hated the thing and didn't let the director, Yoshimitsu Banno, direct the next Godzilla movie. Too bad.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah is 55 years old today; it was released in Japan on July 24, 1971. It was released in America by AIP in 1972 under the title Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster.
