On June 6, 1963, in a modest London boxing gym, six-year-old Patrick Power was lacing up his gloves for another round of training. Bullied at school, he had taken up boxing for confidence and self-defense. What began as a typical session would soon transform into an extraordinary moment in history. That afternoon, the gym fell into an excited hush as Cassius Clay—soon to be known to the world as Muhammad Ali—arrived to train ahead of his match against British boxer Henry Cooper. No one expected the young lad and the rising American boxing star would soon share the ring.

Ali, already famous for his quick wit and larger-than-life presence, spotted young Patrick among the group of trainees. With characteristic warmth, he invited the boy into the ring for a lighthearted sparring session. Encouraging Patrick to throw punches while he playfully dodged and danced around, Ali made sure the boy landed a few jabs, even raising the child’s hand in mock victory. The gym, usually a place of grit and sweat, erupted in laughter and applause. It was a brief but magical moment that showcased Ali’s compassion and love for people as much as his talent for boxing.
