Heathers (1988)
āItās one thing to want someone out of your life, but itās another thing to serve them a wake-up cup full of liquid drainer.ā
āLoving her was was like shaking hands with the devilā
I am just sixteen and you smelled like the outdoors and I hadnāt left my room in a week. I tell you about how my mother made me come to this little boardwalk between 6th and 7th street because she thought I was missing out on the āteenage experienceā. You ask me why Iām wearing three jackets in the middle of June and I tell you to mind your own business but then I quickly apologize because I remember that my therapist told me if I want to make friends I have to be polite. You tell me your name but when I get home I canāt remember it because the side effects of those four little blue pills make my memory fuzzy. I decide to nickname you āThat boyā Your grandmother left you her old car in her will and when I ask if you miss her you tell me you donāt evenĀ rememberĀ her. Sometimes you glance atĀ me for a second too long and I get nervous because it only takes half a second to crash into the car in front of us. Maybe thatās what I would have wanted a couple of months ago but latelyĀ I'veĀ been wearing sundresses and humming along to pop tunes and eatingĀ caramel apples. My mother says she caught me smiling and I ask her for proof because I havenāt smiled in years. I met this girl who falls under the Courtney,Ā Brittany, Heather aesthetic and sheĀ says I have good cheek bones. She teaches me how to apply blush and lipstick and invites me to parties. We had a date on the boardwalk and I keep looking over my shoulder because thereās a dark cloud following us around and for once it isnāt mine. Your eyes get darker each day and I keep telling myself itās just the weather but we both know better. You say you donāt like my new clothes or the glitter on my lips and you miss my trail of tears. I ask you why youāre wearing three jackets in the middle of June and you tell me to mind my own business and you donāt apologize. I think I saw it coming but that doesnāt mean I was ready. I miss you like someone would miss a failed kidney. I canāt help thinking that your tombstone should have the words āThat boyā engraved on it instead of āBeloved son, brother, and friendā. I visit you every year and I rub the glitter off my face and put on three jackets even though itās the middle of June. I take four little blue pills and I finally have the courage to say your name and I say it three hundred and sixty five times, once for every day I didnāt.

It could be argued that the age of the sex crime begins in the year 1791, with the publication of a novel called Justine, or The Misfortunes of Virtue, by The Marquis de Sade, who is the patron saint of pornography and sex crime. Contrary to the general impression, Sade never killed anyone; his most reprehensible exploit was making small cuts on a prostituteās skin and pouring hot wax into them. For a number of similar misdemeanours, he was thrown into prison at the age of thirty-seven and stayed there for thirteen years, until the time of the French Revolution. For a man of Sadeās imperious temperament, prison must have been an unimaginable torment. For three years he was plunged into transports of despair and self-pity. Then he began to recover and direct his hatred and resentment into literacy channels. Resentment mingled with frustrated eroticism to produce works of almost insane cruelty. His favourite fantasy was of some virtuous, innocent girl who falls into the hands of a wicked libertine and is flogged, raped, and tortured.
His most characteristic work is a huge novel called The 120 Days of Sodom, a long sexual daydream about four libertines - including a bishop and a Lord Chief Justice - who retire to a chateau to set out and indulge every possible kind of sexual perversion. Brothel madams tell stories about their most debauched clients, stimulating the libertines to rape, flog, and torture a small band of young men and women who have been procured for their pleasure. Yet, oddly enough, Sade is never pornographic in the modern sense of the word; there are no gloating descriptions of sexual acts. His real desire is to scream defiance at the Church and State; he loves to show judges abusing their authority, and monks and nuns engaged in debauchery and corrupting children. His descriptions of torture are anything but sexually stimulating; even devotees of pornography find them nauseating.
Sade was far more than an advocate of torture and murder; he regarded himself as the first truly honest philosopher in the history of human thought. The so-called āgreat philosophersā he regarded as liars. All animals, he says, seek pleasure as the greatest good; the body was obviously made for pleasure. Then why do we not spend our lives seeking pleasure? Because it would not suit our rulers. They try to persuade us that unselfishness, hard work and self-sacrifice are virtues, and that there is a god in heaven who will judge us for our misdeeds. This is untrue; there is no God, and if we were not such slaves we would throw off our shackles and devote our lives to the pursuit of ecstasy. Would this not lead us into doing harm to others? Of course it would, says Sade. Why not? Animals devour one another; that is the law of nature. The only true honest attitude to human existence is one of total selfishness. The truly courageous man chooses crime rather than virtue, for he knows thatās virtues was invented by our rules to keep us in subjugation. Kings and popes know better; they spend their lives in every kind of debauchery.
Sade was released from prison in 1788, and for a time scraped a living as a playwright. Then he was arrested again for publishing books, and spent the rest of his life in an asylum, where he died in 1816.
On January 8, 1991, Jeremy Delle, a 15-year-old sophomore who had recently transferred to the school, killed himself with a .357 Magnum in front of his second-period English class. He was described by schoolmates as āacting sadā. After coming into class late that morning, he was told to get an attendance slip from the school office. He left and returned with a .357 revolver. He walked to the front of the class and announced, āMiss, I got what I really went for.ā Delle then put the gun into his mouth and pulled the trigger. The incident inspired the Pearl Jam song āJeremyā. The bandās lead singer, Eddie Vedder, read a newspaper account of the incident and was moved to write the song almost immediately.
One of his suicide notes:
āTo whoever I decide this is to,Ā I have a lot going on,Ā a little too much more than what IĀ can handle Iām in too much pain, and I just want YOU to understand why Iām doing this, I donātĀ hate myself I hate whatās going on in my life my parents, a new school IĀ feel like IĀ donāt fit in nowhere.Ā I realize that there will be friends that will try to ask me why becauseĀ I feel like I haveĀ to,Ā I feel itās the only way.Ā I rather end my own life than others and thatās what its gonna come down to soĀ Iām taking the shame out of myself.Ā Thanks to the only people that was ever good to me, the people that was there for me.Ā I figure itās been so many yaāll wont even knowĀ Iām gone and as for ones that tried to hurt me you didnāt. I know Barnett is gonna ask me to go get a pass butĀ I ainātĀ getting that damn pass Iām getting the gun and the next time you see meĀ Iām going to blow my fucking brains out. I want my blood to shed on everybody,Ā I want everybody to feel my pain and seeing me die will make them in pain. To my dad shit what kind of shit is that, and my mom, Iām not going to waste my breath well goodbye see all in better daysā
I think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy. Because they know what itās like to feel absolutely worthless and they donāt want anybody else to feel like that.
