Regardless how you found this, welcome to my current pinned post! My name is “PK” or “Pency”, whichever you prefer. 'A popular fanfic author stopped updating her fic because she said that the stress of being constantly falsely accused of using AI was a witch hunt and it was destroying her mental health to the extent that she needed to take a break from writing, leading to multiple online discussions defending her and debates about AI accusations and how You Can't Really Tell So Leave Her Alone, and then someone realised that there were Claude coding artefacts in her fics and that it was a super pervasive problem in that particular fandom, proven definitively by looking at the source coding of each work on AO3, and she denied it for a bit but then ultimately admitted that oopsie, she had been using genAI all along, and then she deleted all of her fics off AO3 and people got mad because they were being denied access to their favourite fics, even though they now knew definitively that they were genAI slop, and then it turned out that she'd actually stopped updating the fic on AO3 in the first place because she'd been shopping it around to agents and editors as an original work with the serial numbers filed off, and she'd been in conversations with a publisher which ultimately got dropped because she'd lied to them about her AI use' oh cool, so we're in Hell, then

Pisses me off that i’ve seen so much marketing for “Hims” which are anti-hair loss pills which contain finasteride, minoxidil, etc, while prescribing the same chemicals as regular HRT is getting choked off for anybody under 26 in the US. “Yeah you can take this chemical but your insurance will only pay for it if you promise you’re not a tranny” fuck offffffff!!!!

i really really hate seeing black men as portrayed juxtapositions to innocence and kindness in memes, internet jokes and the like. and seeing them proclaimed as “wholesome,” when they are just like. Being “human” people that aren’t being masculine in the way they are thought to be being exceptional and surprising ! it snitches on you! every time!

you gotta ask yourself, why does this idea of opposition effect you? why does a black man handling a kitten illicit that response from you? why does a meme talking about kindness and love with black men in the bg holding up gang signs feel the way it feels? what are these jokes saying about your humor? humor is a tool to interact with larger society, it’s a tool you gotta make sure isn’t being sharpened as a weapon in your hand

@closet-keys thank you so much for reminding me of my favorite videos on this topic. good context that is mentioned in this clip is also that demi is a short man (5’4”-5”), dark skinned and has locs so i bet he gets this A LOT.

i especially appreciate his insight on how it makes him feels desexualizing and like a fucking puppy because two things are happening here.

the desexualization speaks to the default image of black men in the social consciousness. they are “bucks,” “studs, “mandigoes,” and so on and so forth. the juxtaposition confirms the expectation of what a black man is and isn’t. black men are Meant to be sexual objects defined by aggression and desire so it’s surprising when they aren’t !

the feeling of a puppy, personally makes me think of the inverse of it being a dog or a cur. there is ownership here, there is an expectation of wildness and dehumanization. god it even has infantilization! it’s got it all. a dog is only good when it can be controlled, unthreatening, and malleable to training. that is how white women Especially see black men. and im going to also say that white queers, yall do this SO FUCKING MUCH, to black men it’s disgusting. whether it’s in fandom or in the news, it’s omnipresent and disgusting

Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.

Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.

There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.

i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.

I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case

Marriage is good and weddings are great but I hate modern wedding culture. You don’t need to bankrupt yourself to have a nice wedding. Stop supporting the wedding industry, stop buying outrageously priced engagement rings, stop spending 10k on a dress you’ll only ever wear once.

Coming from a professional event planner - weddings are egregiously expensive because companies openly raise prices at the word “wedding.”

Pro Tip - Never drop the word wedding while planning if you don’t need to. Most things can be for “an event you’re planning.” This obviously doesn’t include things like the venue, DJ (who needs specific wedding songs), and the wedding dress company if you’re going that route versus just buying a dress.

For my wedding I got “discounted” cupcakes, flowers, decor, bridesmaids dresses, groomsman attire, and invitations. I did this by either searching for things that aren’t marketed for weddings or not telling the companies I was working with it was for a wedding. Because honestly, most of the time they don’t need to know why you’re ordering.

These companies target people planning their weddings and markup everything the second “wedding” is said. And it’s said often because people assume the services change exponentially for weddings. They absolutely do not.

The best example are the cupcakes I had for my wedding. I used a designer cupcake store in town instead of spending $1000 on a wedding cake. If you place a large order of cupcakes with a cake tree for display - it costs about $150 for 100 (which is what I did). When you order their “wedding” package - the price raised to a $700 base for 100 cupcakes. The only other perk includes a “tasting.” Forget that. Our tasting was buying a few cupcakes in flavors we thought we’d like and picked three. It cost maybe $20.

What these companies do is scummy and targets people who don’t have information about the event industry.

I will yell it from the rooftops until people realize there’s a better way.

This is all good advice. I would like to add this from my own experience 18 years ago:

A lot of bridesmaid dresses are SUPER FANCY and still WAY CHEAPER than actual wedding dresses. Look at bridesmaid dresses before wedding dresses if you want something that does not wear 500 pounds and also does not cost an outrageous amount of money.

And be prepared for people at wedding boutiques to try and get you into the bridal gown anyway. Because that’s what happened to me. A lot of “Oh, you’re shopping for the bridesmaid dresses?” “No, I’m shopping for me. The bride. I don’t want to wear five pounds in 90 degrees and 100% humidity.”

I ended up with a delightful strapless, two-piece dress with a tiered skirt and light purple sash for about 500 bucks total after alterations. Might have been cheaper than that, actually.

Also, check on facebook/craigslist/ebay for dress options, too. Take your measurements. Buy it too big and get it tailored. It’ll be cheaper, I’m sure.

I have a new standard for the level of haterdom to aspire to, and it's Reddit User KismaiAesthetics, who hates doing laundry so much that he got really good at it, so that he can (I quote) do it right the first time, every time, and get back to watching cat videos on the Internet.

and by "really good at it," I mean that he does a bunch of reading on the chemistry of laundry, subscribes to academic journals about laundry, and buys a bunch of different laundry products (including from outside the US) to scrutinize their ingredients and test them for himself. he writes a bunch of incredibly detailed longposts about his findings on /r/laundry and his website, which is also about laundry. he even got interviewed about his laundryposts, in which he revealed he's writing a book about laundry. this man is like ahab and the white whale, if ahab had a reddit account and moby dick was a pile of clothes with cheeseburger stains on them

anyway the reason I encountered this guy was because recently, the household washer has been leaving these gross little oily brown flakes on anything washed in it. this is kind of a big problem for me, given that I not only have (literal, diagnosed, medicated) OCD which includes a contagion phobia, I also sew a bunch of stuff with the intent of gifting or selling it, and sometimes that involves prewashing fabric. only, you know, washing is supposed to make things cleaner, not dirtier.

and my research brought me to (gross photos warning!) Kismai's post on the very topic. apparently this stuff is called "scrud," and it's basically a residue that forms over time inside the nooks and crannies of a washing machine - leftover detergent reacting with mineral traces in tapwater to form a buildup that also traps dyes, grease, and other dirt, which bacteria then feeds on, because it wasn't already gross enough. it forms faster if you have hard water, use too much detergent (which most people do), use fabric softener, wash only on cold and the list goes on and on - point is, scrud is the reason that you have to actually clean your washing machine, or be super fastidious about how you do laundry.

(I'll take "things I wish school/my parents actually taught me" for 800)

so now I am engaged in a lengthy battle against scrud, armed with a tub of oxiclean and a sack of citric acid crystals. (we're renters, so disassembling the machine is out of the question.) pour in a scoop of oxiclean, run a machine clean cycle, pour in a scoop of citric acid, run another machine clean cycle, all while wiping piles and piles of scrud out of the drum at the end of each cycle. I'm on the eighth cycle now. there's still so much scrud. the reddit record for "how many cleaning cycles were needed to get a machine entirely free of scrud" is 22 cycles. help
