THE THINKING TAGS HACK

so you know how sometimes you ask claude a question and it just… gives you a mid answer?

like it's technically correct but not helpful?

here's why: you're not letting it THINK

what most people do: "How do I fix this bug in my code?"

what you SHOULD do: "Use tags to work through this problem step-by-step before answering: How do I fix this bug in my code?"

THE DIFFERENCE IS INSANE

regular prompt:

gives you a quick answer

might miss context

one solution

with thinking tags:

shows reasoning

considers multiple approaches

catches edge cases

explains trade-offs

REAL EXAMPLE:

i asked claude to plan a road trip

without thinking tags: "Here's a 5-day itinerary from NYC to Miami" [generic list]

with thinking tags: " Let me consider:

Time of year (weather)

Must-see spots vs hidden gems

Driving time vs activities

Budget tier

Whether they prefer cities or nature

Based on these factors, here's a customized plan…"

[way better itinerary that actually considered MY preferences]

HOW TO USE IT:

add this to ANY prompt:

"Think through this step-by-step using tags before giving your final answer: [your question]"

that's literally it

WHEN TO USE:

✅ complex problems ✅ code debugging ✅ strategic planning ✅ creative projects with multiple approaches ✅ when you need to see the reasoning

❌ simple facts (overkill) ❌ when you just need a quick answer

PRO TIP:

you can also ask it to show thinking for specific parts:

"Consider edge cases Write a function that validates email addresses"

this focuses the thinking on what YOU care about

why it works: you see claude's actual thought process. it catches mistakes, considers alternatives, and gives WAY better answers

i used this for debugging code yesterday and it found 3 edge cases i would've missed

2. THE "EXPLAIN LIKE I'M 5, THEN EXPERT" PROMPT 📚

"Explain [topic] in two ways: First, as if I'm 5 years old. Then, as if I'm an expert in the field."

this is PERFECT for learning new concepts

you get the simple version to understand it, then the technical version to actually use it

i learned blockchain fundamentals in 20 minutes using this. TWENTY MINUTES.

3. THE CODE REVIEW PROMPT 💻

for my developer friends:

"Review this code for bugs, security issues, and optimization opportunities. Use this structure:

Critical Issues

Suggestions

Optimization Ideas [paste code]"

it's like having a senior developer on call 24/7
