Recently a collaboration between the house and H&M was released (http://www.fashionologie.com/New-Margiela-HM-Pieces-Revealed-Pictures-25348298?page=0,0,0#0) . All the pieces were essentially re-edited trademarks from the past, somewhat archival and all in all just fine. Personally I think this is just a waste. The clothes themselves are made in China, so there is a dramatic sacrifice to be made in terms of quality, but the prices are almost the same as the clothes made in Italy (300 dollar dresses). It makes me wonder what Martin himself thinks about this collaboration and if he even had a say in it since he no longer works at the maison. I can't imagine why a man who has retained an image of mystery for decades would allow extreme commercialization and poor construction to be a part of the name. I understand the desire to become accessible to people who don't have thousands of dollars to spend at a whim and who don't necessarily have access to the clothing wherever they may live (me for example) this just seems desperate. H&M is a brand designed to capitalize at all costs and has no sense of integrity whatsoever. I'm shocked that Maison Martin Margiela would choose to remarket themselves as an accessible brand this way rather than taking a more innovative and sincere approach (don't even get me started on the Comme des Garçons/H&M collab) but then what do I know anyway?
