🐢 Something that perhaps goes too slow in this is the actual custody part, but since it is the whole plot, I kind of speed through Ice & Carole's newfound bestie friendship while still trying to make it feel real & lived in

"Ice here got sole custody of his best friend's kid. So while you're mouthing off, just remember that he's a better pilot and a better man than all of you."

"Ron," Ice warns. He turns around and his best friend is taking up the entirety of the doorway to the classroom, daring the other pilots to say another word.

"Dismissed," Ice tells them and they all line up to leave. Only once they're all in single file does Slider move from the doorway to let them through

"Just here to get your lunch order."

"You don't look like an ensign."

🦒 - (giraffe) is there any part of this fic where you feel you're stretching the amount of belief for the reader/yourself?

🐭 - (mouse) is there a hidden detail in the fic which makes you happy? (Do you want to share it with the class?)

🦒The biggest stretch in Fake Dating Gone Wrong is definitely Jake leaving the Navy. I love fics where Bradley quits being a naval aviator and I think a lot about what the two of them would do if not in the Navy, but I found that making Jake's exit from being a naval aviator was really hard to find believable. To me, he just seems like a character who is in it for the long haul. So that has been fun to write, but also the biggest challenge. I hope that I do the concept justice

For Ice as Jake's dad 2, a little 🐭 detail is how scared Mav is. During the whole fic, the audience will only get Jake and Ice's POV, thinking about how Mav up & left. They sympathize with Penny and Amelia years later and although it certainly does not absolve Mav, there is a thread throughout that Mav's fear that he is going to fuck everything up ends up making him a self-fulfilling prophecy

🐭For Ice gets custody of Bradley, I don't know if there are any hidden details yet but such an important thread from the beginning of the fic that even Ice doesn't realize is how much Slider is in love with him. So balancing that for the future audience and for Ice has been fun

🦒 Oh my gosh, on the flip side, there is such a stretch for the bradley né seresin AU, mainly the concept of kinship adoption in Texas. But i figure if the Pitt can just throw it around on the most recent season, then Maverick can convince social workers & lawyers that being a godfather is legally binding lol

“My best friend”—

“One of your best friends,” Javy corrects.

“One of my best friends,” Jake allows, “Is a drag performer at Wreckers.”

He delights in the confusion & dropped jaws from the Daggers who have heard of it.

"Please tell me you've tried on her heels," Nat asks eagerly.

“Of course I have. We’re the same size," Jake tells her. “She says I don’t have the legs for it which is horseshit. My calves are stunning. Right, Bradshaw?"

Mav pauses to sigh and it's rare that Bradley really sees Mav's age, but something about this week really seems to have hit home.

"Sometimes, you're let down so many times, that you need to keep the idea of a pipe dream. Because if you're let down just one more time, it'll be the last. It's about keeping yourself safe and if this is the only way that Jake can do that, then so be it."

"At least I know now, you know?" Jake says in such a sickeningly earnest way, like he's saying what he believes with his whole broken heart right here at this bar. "There's no wondering if he's going to pretend to like me just cause I'm his kid."

Beau’s own heart sinks as Jake's words piece together a picture.

"He hates me! And that's even without knowing that I'm his son. So I know now. And that's okay. I'll just never see him again and it'll be fine. He doesn’t have to know!”

It sounds like it won't be fine at all, but Beau isn't about to say that to Jake.

"I'll be your dad," he says instead for some reason. He thinks that his husband might kill him.

"You don't like me either," Jake points out, like it's just a known fact.

"That's not true."

What’s truer is that Beau has never really thought about Jake Seresin at all outside the context of the United States Navy, but now it is all he can do.

"I was being proactive, Mav," Ice calls from the kitchen table, where he is already annoyed with the crossword puzzle.

"We were bonding over foster care. He wasn't trying to get into my pants, you old coot."

"It's not your khakis I'm worried about."

"Hangman gets his promotions by himself. Come on now."

"I can admit that perhaps I overreacted, but he and Bradley also got into a fistfight during your training."

"They apologized to each other and settled it. They were really coming around to each other too before you scared him off!"

“Actually, let me get a photo of this," Nat insists, not caring that they are at the zoo and Jake is technically working. "Two brothers, different khakis.”

“They don’t let you wear shorts?” Jake examines Bradley's pressed trousers, perhaps a bit wrinkly now from transport.

“Bare thighs in the Navy would have really wreaked havoc on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.”

"And the communal showers didn't?"

They both look at their pops, but Mav just shrugs with a smirk that Jake refuses to think about. He's heard enough stories Mav and Dad from Uncle Slider to scar him for life.

“I’m shocked that you’re allowed to wear shorts. Don’t you have to deal with animal diseases or whatever?”

“Ew, Bradley. I have long pants if I need them.”

“Ew me? Ew you.”

“Boys, we’ve been stateside for a whole twenty minutes," Mav sighs loudly. "Bradley, you’re still in uniform and representing the US Navy, and Jake, you’re at work. Let’s not get in a slap fight.”

"Mean, all of you," Jake grumbles. "Just for that, we're visiting Bobby's favorite animal first."

"I'm not dating anyone. I took our vows seriously just like you," Bradley insists, but it sounds desperate even to his own ears. "To have and to hold. In sickness and health," Jake says aloud, just to remind Bradley that he's actually been doing none of it. "I just needed you to know, that’s all,” Bradley grumbles. "You sent divorce papers express. First class mail. What was I supposed to think?" "You thought that I had found someone else,” Bradley realizes. "Figured you needed to get divorced in order to marry them." Jake shrugs and he is no longer making eye contact with Bradley. He's looking off at the barn like all he wants to do is go back and bury himself in his sheet metal creations. "There's only ever been you." It's too sincere but it gets Bradley a real reaction Jake flushes and then seems to be furious with himself for doing so "I got selected for a mission. One that I might not come back from. I was…" "Tying up loose ends," Jake guesses. "Don't say it like that."
