i am pretty high right now β¦ i think iβll eat an edible
I love that folks are being more accepting of autism, but I don't love that autism is being sanitized into a quirk.
There's a cute and acceptable form of autism on social media, and I don't see any indication that folks are remotely ready for discussing the rest of it, which contains all the uncomfortable things that impede a person's everyday life, require support, and make acceptance almost impossibleβwhere the hygiene struggles, inappropriate social behaviors, involuntary movements and outbursts, meltdowns, and emotional dependence issues live. And the cuter and more sanitized the "good" autism gets, the more unacceptable the "bad" autism becomes.
"bluntly honest" autism but in the sense that i absolutely cannot refrain from complimenting strangers if i like their earrings or their shirt or i think they have a friendly-sounding laugh or i think their art is beautiful or i think the fic they wrote portrays the characters so well. "bluntly honest" doesn't have to mean "mean". i love to tell people things that are kind and also true.
Autistics often struggle to learn how to drive, usually taking 6-9 months longer to obtain their licence (if they're able to drive at all).
This isn't surprising when you think about everything that goes into driving.
You need to successfully and confidently:
Know how to operate the car
Know all the laws of driving
Be able to switch between multiple tasks
Preempt other driver's movements
Be aware of your surroundings at all times
Not get distracted
Listen and watch for traffic hazards, emergency vehicles etc
Stay calm at all times
Anticipate and react to the traffic around you
Interact with other drivers as necessary to ensure the flow of traffic
Cope with the noise of traffic
Cope with police officers during routine traffic stops etc
Ensure your car is road worthy at all times.
And about a dozen other things!
So, if you're autistic and can't drive, there is nothing wrong with you. It's freaking difficult, scary to learn, and a sensory nightmare!

Its so crazy how the cultural conception of OCD has absolutely nothing to do with what OCD actually is literally at all
@ people talking about contamination OCD in the notes: thatβs not what this post is saying. of course contamination OCD is a real theme that exists. but you canβt deny that the media conception of it is βhehe I like things to be cleanβ, which is STILL nothing to do with what OCD is about
same with perfectionism OCD or βjust rightβ OCD. yes, a very very simplified version of those themes shows up in the media every now and then. but the cultural conception is still βI like things to be this wayβ, rather than the reality of βif things arenβt this way, my brain wonβt stop screaming at me and Iβll feel like Iβm going to dieβ
OCD is a mental illness for a reason. itβs not fun or pleasant or solely based on a couple of quirky external behaviours. contamination OCD existing does not change the fact that nobody seems to know what OCD actually is
I find it funny when someone self-diagnoses themselves with autism, allistics and neurotypicals are always the ones complaining about it. βYou canβt diagnose yourself! Youβre mocking people with actual autism! It isnβt valid! Youβre taking away resources from actual autistic people!β
But, then diagnosed autistic people themselves will look at that same self-diagnosed person and be like: βOh, yeah. Youβre definitely one of us.β
Also, the question is this; What resources are we taking away from diagnosed Autistic people? What resources are there for us to take? And, how would we do that anyway?
anyone else stay home for a while and be like "hmmmm been acting fine lately. maybe i'm not autistic." and then you have one (1) social interaction and you're like ah. the Autism strikes again.

I bring a sort of "can't read social cues" vibe to every social situation that I can't tell if anyone likes or not
me and the profound social isolation I pulled by being autistic
Anyone: Hey (asks about a special interest of mine)? Me: Becomes an unskippable cutscene
horror of being perceived vs desire to be adored
Yeah you're right. It WOULD be pretty fucked up if you were a swan but you were raised by ducks and you grew up never seeing another swan or even knowing that such a thing as a swan even existed so you just thought you were a duck with something super wrong with it.
