Hi,
I’d like to explore my point a bit more and delve into the ways the rhythm doctor has altered some of the characters.
Lucia is colored in her signature colors, just like Mark, but she’s shown as white, even though her sprite work clearly shows otherwise. Honestly, I don’t mind this. I can see her as a white girl with a tan, who knows? But with her bouncy, “wavy” hair, I was a little expecting her to be darker, like in the official art of Lucky.
And speaking of luck, what about him? He seems to be portrayed as some kind of person of color, or at the very least Filipino. Many in the community speculate this, not to mention his signature hairstyle is LITERALLY BRIADS/LOCS.
And what about the janitor!!
Even though he doesn’t have a lot of screen time or lines, he still makes a big impact on the story and how the game represents people of color. His identity as a person of color is evident, and his hairstyle, which looks like a fade or mini fro, adds to that representation.
Okay, here’s my last-minute argument: it’s mainly isn’t about Black people, but it’s also about how some of the beloved characters we’ve known for ages seem to always be treated unfairly. Think of Ian, and maybe even Cole.
In various promo arts his skin tone is often made a lot lighter now this is honestly might because yea the games main style is pixelated and for shading lighting and rendering and making facial features more distinct they might use different variations of the same color but straight up making your characters a whole different color like?! Idk man
Okay, here we go circling back around to the main point,
I’ve already mentioned that Mark shouldn’t be shown as a white man, especially since he looks like this, but unfortunately, the developers have made their choice, and there’s nothing we can do about it.
It’s interesting that you’re the only one who mentioned your character has disheveled wavy hair, and then you go ahead and depict it this way.
That’s pin-straight hair! It’s a key visual for him, but I’ve noticed some descriptions have missed this important detail.
(Edited), the last two images weren’t actually drawn by Kyle. Instead, someone is using his art style, and it seems like you’ve drawn your own character in a similar way before.
Clearly showing that the community is MORE than capable of drawing Afro/curly and textured hair
To wrap things up, the main issue is that his canon description doesn’t quite align with the visual images we see in the game. This is something many RD fans have pointed out. I’m suggesting that the character’s appearance should be based on the actual in-game visual sprites. I understand he’s probably capable of drawing black people and our hair type, but it’s a recurring issue. I want to clarify that I hope I’m not trying to stir up trouble, sound preachy, or complain. It’s just what we’ve got, and we have to accept it, but it still feels a bit disappointing. I’m not suggesting anyone should be punished for being positive about this; I’m just hoping people remember to highlight a character’s visual traits when they’re describing them. For instance, Mark’s hairstyle would be a good example.
And in the nicest way possible if you don’t agree with me feel free to unfollow me and feel free to leave this is a safe space for everyone and all works of life and I will continue to try and strive for that and empathize it 🩵
hii i'm the guy that drew the marklings back in december, but i need to clarify some things about your examples.
Rhythm Doctor Trading Cards are community made. Lucia's card was completely based off of the In-game Lucia sketch Rhythm Doctor Trading Cards are community made. Lucia's card was completely based off of the In-game Lucia sketch
There are also instances of kyle drawing her properly colored, as well as janitor.
that's all
