In the Emerald City, beneath a starlit night, a wedding was being celebrated. The air was thick with the scent of flowers brought by the guests and those hung as decorations throughout the hall. The room, vast and magnificent, buzzed with people and sparkled under ornaments that shone like diamonds.
Princess Ozma began the ceremony. The bride and groom, standing near her, began to walk down a long hallway filled with lights, followed closely by the crowd of friends and guests.
The Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion brought up the rear; as important figures, their presence was required. The Lion felt somewhat overwhelmed by the crowd, so the friends walked a fair distance behind the procession.
Anna and Teo, the couple, reached the end of the hallway, which opened into the palace's back gardens. There stood their destination: a central fountain made of marble and jewels. From its center rose a massive tree with long, beautiful branches covered in vibrant green leaves. The water bathing its roots was crystal clear, with pink petals floating on the surface.
Ozma and the crowd came to a halt.
"Now, Anna and Teo," the sovereign said. "Please, kneel in front of the fountain."
They shared a tender smile and knelt, gazing at the magnificent tree. This tree was magical, a staple of Ozian weddings. In Oz, these ceremonies are essential for those wishing to have children. The tree was transparent in its judgment; it showed the truth and only the truth. If the tree blooms, the couple may marry and conceive; if not, something is wrong, and the ruler will not permit the ceremony.
"Proceed to dip your hands into the fountain," Ozma commanded. "The Tree of Life will grant you its blessing if it so chooses."
Anna and Teo interlaced their hands and slowly submerged them into the water. Silence fell over the crowd. For a moment, the tree began to bloom, and rosy flowers started to sprout from the branches, but then, without warning, the water turned black as ink! The few flowers that had fallen withered instantly and sank into the dark water.
The Tin Woodman stepped forward in disbelief, and the Scarecrow stumbled, nearly dropping the book in his hands.
Teo pulled his hand out of the water as if he had been bitten by a snake.
"What happened?" Teo asked nervously.
"I was going to ask the same..." Anna whispered, frightened.
"Well," Ozma said gravely. "It seems something is wrong between you two, one of you has committed a cruel act."
Teo stood up abruptly and faced Ozma.
"Your Majesty! That is a lie! This tree is lying!"
"Lying? Are you insinuating that the magic of the Tree of Life is mistaken?" Asked Ozma.
"Yes! I love Anna! This tree is broken!" Said Teo.
"I ask you to calm down," Ozma said sternly.
The Scarecrow stepped forward, seeing Teo’s disrespect toward Ozma.
"Do not speak to the Ruler that way! She knows what she is talking about, as do I! The tree never lies." Scarecrow said with a serious tone.
Anna looked at Teo, her face filled with worry.
"Teo... what is going on?"
"Tell the truth, Teo," Ozma added. "It is the only choice you have."
Teo sighed and looked at Anna, trembling slightly.
"Fine... I’ll be honest. Yesterday... I saw your sister Sophy. She was at my house, and we were together all night."
A gasp of surprise rippled through the guests. Anna couldn't help but scream:
"WHAT? Are you serious? While you were with me?!"
Teo tried to explain, but without warning, Anna slapped him so hard he stumbled back. She grabbed her wedding dress and ran away, tears streaming down her face. When Teo tried to go after her, a tall, imposing figure blocked his way. It was the Tin Woodman; his dull green glass eyes looked at him with icy disappointment.
"Let her go," Nick Chopper said, placing a heavy hand on Teo’s shoulder. "You’ve done enough."
"It’s not fair... she loves me," Teo stammered.
The Lion walked to Ozma’s side and spoke firmly:
"But you don't love her, If you did, you wouldn't have been unfaithful, and the tree would have bloomed."
The Scarecrow opened his book to page 47.
"According to the rules of Oz, the punishment for this cruel action shall be service to the Winkie people for half a year—or more, depending on the severity of the matter!"
"I agree!" the Tin Woodman exclaimed.
"Breaking a heart is something I will never tolerate, neither in my kingdom nor in Ozma's.
I requested this order, and she allowed it." He looked at Teo coldly. "You are coming with me to the Winkie Country! You will be given a house near my palace, and there, along with others like you, we will give you work and manners as punishment."
Teo hung his head and sighed. Ozma spoke again, her voice slightly softer.
"Teo, if you truly repent and change, the tree may give you a second chance, until then, heal your own heart."
The Tin Woodman grabbed Teo by the collar of his shirt and dragged him toward the exit, where the Winkie soldiers were waiting.
"Scarecrow," Ozma said finally, "go find Anna, we need to talk to her."
"Yes!," Said de Scarecrow, "The poor girl must be devastated! To find out about this at her own wedding!"
"Yes," Ozma concluded, "but those are the consequences of not thinking, isn't that right, my friend?"
"Absolutely!" the Scarecrow replied with pride.
End of the scene! ✨️ I hope you liked it!
