It's my dad's birthday today. He's turning the big 7-0, same as Nathan Lane, and he was pretty hyped when I told him this. The Birdcage is one of his favorite movies ever (he's a big Robin Williams fan too) and I have a core memory of watching it with him as a kid.

He's responsible for a lot of my sense of humor and he's always made me feel loved and supported. While he does have his flaws, he's genuinely a good person and has done his best to break the cycle in terms of parenting. Both he and my mom grew up in extremely toxic households but while my mom viewed her dad as a Real Man (🤮), he never wanted to be like his.

He never taught us to bury our emotions or pretend not to have any. He never saw crying as a weakness. He was the first one I came out to back in 2008 and I'm glad that he's still around.

I chose to avoid most franchises in order to fit as many individual films as possible. Mary Poppins, Homeward Bound, and Enchanted have sequels, yes, but they're not "franchises" in the likes of Narnia or Pirates of the Caribbean. Also, films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit are in that..... weird space of being teeeeeechnically being produced by Disney, but without the Disney logo at the start, so in order to be as fair as possible, I stuck with "official" Disney movies. Just wanted to give a little love to my fave live-action films since I do tend to favor animation on this blog.

Definitely Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night. It's such a mess but the animation can be pretty at times and it's got some great actors in it. (James Earl Jones, Ed Asner, Don Knotts, Frank Welker, etc.)

I remember seeing Happily Ever After in the video store a lot as a kid but never checked it out for some reason. Fast forward to 2009 when I watched it on youtube one rainy day and...woof. 💀 There were some talented folks in that cast too but everything else was pretty rough.
