Little Women (1949) - or the almost unexpected Christmas classic ✨
This Christmas has been touched by an unexpected melancholy, shaped by sudden events and by the quiet weight of time passing, when adulthood sometimes seems to dull the joy and wonder of childhood. I don’t often write such personal notes about the films I watch, but Little Women is one I return to every year, like an old friend, or a safe place I’m always grateful to find again.
The film opens during the Christmas season, in a time when the warmth of the hearth, of family, and of generosity could warm even snow-covered winter nights, despite hardship and poverty. It then unfolds into a sentimental tale and a coming-of-age story steeped in melancholy and nostalgia, brought to life by a stellar cast including Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rossano Brazzi.
