Power always thinks it has a great soul and vast views beyond the comprehension of the weak; and that it is doing God's service when it is violating all His laws.
-John Adams
Security in an Insecure World
To those unfamiliar with Corrie ten Boom hers is an amazing story of how she and her family hid Jews from the Nazis, were betrayed, and sent to concentration camps. This was told in the inspirational book and movie The Hiding Place. During interviews, she related several stories from those days of horror in the concentration camps and how her faith sustained her. One most important word of advice she has given is this: âDonât hold onto anything so tightly that Jesus canât take it from you.â Terrorism, failing financial institutions, failing relationships, and dysfunctional governance on national levels all contribute to the growing sense of insecurity in our world. Still, everyone is looking for security, but itâs elusive to most. When that happens, people will look anywhere, and do anything, to attain it. Paradoxically, Jesus suggested that we best realize security when we stop our pursuit of being in control and trust him. Thatâs what Corrie ten Boom understood all too well. Jesus tells us that security is best understood as a trust relationship and not a theological concept. Understanding theology only brings us to the point of belief. Knowing Jesus takes us over that line of belief to the crux of the issue, which is not whether we can lose security, but whether God can lose control of his universe. Corrie ten Boom learned the distinction between the two in the crucible of a concentration camp. And she learned to rest in that trust. Jesus continually points to himself as the one who can bring peace to the heart that yearns to be secure (John 14:27). So, if youâre looking for security, seek out the words of Jesus and not the lure of culture. Donât, as Corrie suggested, hold onto anything so tightly that Jesus canât take it from you. Itâs only when weâre able to freely give to Jesus that we can also freely receive from Him in return. Question: Is there anything youâre holding onto too tightly that Jesus canât take it from you? Is your security defined by what you possess, or who possesses you?

El Elyon - God Most High
People get a perverse pleasure from being âhigherâ than others. The tallest boy in the class looks down (literally) on his shorter classmates. Being ranked higher, having a higher income or IQ or GPA or test score or social standardâall of these are recipes for pride.
We love being above others, which makes things interesting when we see God described as âGod Most Highâ (El Elyon) in Genesis 14. This distinct name sets God apart from all would-be âcompetitorsâ or ârivals.â
As the Most High, the God of the Bible is supreme. He is lifted up, exalted, positioned far above mere high things or even higher things. As the Most High, He surpasses all else. No one can go toe-to-toe or see eye to eye with the Most High. No one can raise himself or herself above God and look down on God.
This name of God is used in a fascinating story told within the Old Testament book of Daniel. King Nebuchadnezzar was off-the-charts arrogant. The prophet Daniel warned Nebuchadnezzar that because of his immense pride, he would be driven from his palace to live like a wild animal.
Nebuchadnezzar scoffed. Then, for seven years Nebuchadnezzar lived like a dumb beast. Only when his heart was brought low and his eyes were lifted up to see the one, true God. This is when Nebuchadnezzar finally acknowledged God as âthe Most Highâ El Elyon. (Daniel 4:34).
The great C. S. Lewis once said, âAs long as you are proud you cannot know God.â Bingo! Pride is that sinful tendency to exalt ourselves, to live as though we are the loftiest beings in the universe.
As long as weâre always looking down on everything, Lewis argued, we will never see the One who is above us.

When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in society, over a course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.
