or what other characters see when they talk to Naruhodo
It would seem to be a popular fact - Naruhodo has big puppy eyes. But is it really that simple and is there really only sadness and hope there?

...Don't look at me like that.
This is literally the first meeting between Naruhodo and Itonoko, case 1-2. It is not surprising that in Naruhodo's eyes there is hope that the detective will take pity and show the reports.
But I want to draw attention to one dialogue that not everyone notices and checks. Especially in the original language.
成歩堂さん。････あなたを見て、 だれかに似ていると思いました。
Naruhodo-san. ... Seeing you, I thought you looked like someone.
なな、なんですって!
W-what did you say?!
････わかりましたよ。
この検事さんです。
... I get it now. It's this prosecutor.
あなたの目････この検事さんと同じ光をしているんですよ。
Your eyes... they have the same light as this prosecutor's eyes.

Perhaps the directions you two are looking are different... for now.

But, your eyes are the same color.
目 (me) - eye/s
同じ (onaji) - same
色 (iro) - color
"Eyes of the same color" or "same look" (目つきが同じ, metsuki ga onaji).
This is a metaphor. It means that Naruhodō and Mei Karuma have the same inner strength and determination, which is reflected in their eyes. They are much more similar than they themselves think. That's why they irritate each other so much.
As much as we don't want to admit it, Acro is right, he's a good reader of people. And he can judge a person's character with a snap of his finger.
There are several more comments that the characters made about Naruhodō's gaze (I will add in the second part), but the gist is this - Naruhodō's gaze says much more than his mouth and facial expression. Whoever looks into his eyes and sees the truth there will understand in which direction to act in order to make the right choice.
