sunshine on an emerald- gelphie fanfic part 2
galinda didnât usually wake up thinking about someone.
she woke up thinking about outfits, or assignments sheâd forgotten, or whether the dining hall would have the good pastries. normal things. predictable things.
but today, the first thing in her mind was elphaba.
specifically: the way elphaba had looked at her yesterday. soft. careful. almost curious.
galinda pressed her hands to her cheeks, which were already warm. âridiculous,â she muttered to herself. âcompletely ridiculous.â
she got dressed slowly, choosing a ribbon that matched her eyes a little too perfectly. she told herself it wasnât for anyone. she told herself she just liked looking nice.
she was lying and she knew it.
when she reached the dining hall, elphaba was already there same table, same cup of tea, same posture that somehow managed to look both rigid and relaxed at once.
galindaâs heart did a small, traitorous flutter.
âmorning,â she said, sliding into her seat.
elphaba looked up, and something in her expression softened. âgood morning.â
galinda tried not to melt. she failed.
âyouâre early,â elphaba added.
âi can be early,â galinda said, lifting her chin. âsometimes.â
âi didnât say you couldnât.â
âwell you implied it.â
elphabaâs lips twitched. âi didnât.â
galinda stabbed a piece of melon. âyou did.â
elphaba watched her for a moment, eyes warm in a way that made galindaâs stomach flip. âyou look⌠bright today.â
galinda blinked. âbright?â
âyes. like you slept well.â
galinda absolutely had not slept well. sheâd spent half the night replaying every moment from yesterday and the other half imagining new ones.
âi always look bright,â she said, trying to sound breezy.
âyou do,â elphaba agreed softly.
galinda nearly dropped her fork.
spell theory was marginally better than yesterday, but only because galinda had decided she would not, under any circumstances, let elphaba fluster her again.
this plan lasted approximately four minutes.
elphaba leaned over her notes, pointing at a line of symbols. âthis part is backwards.â
galinda nodded, pretending she understood anything at all. âright. backwards. of course.â
âyou donât know what iâm talking about,â elphaba said.
âi do,â galinda lied.
elphaba gave her a look the kind that saw straight through her, the kind that made galinda feel both exposed and strangely safe.
âhere,â elphaba murmured, reaching out to adjust galindaâs wand.
galindaâs breath caught.
she didnât squeak this time. she was proud of that. she did, however, forget how to blink.
âbetter?â elphaba asked.
galinda nodded too quickly. âyes. perfect. wonderful. amazing.â
elphabaâs cheeks warmed. âitâs just wand placement.â
âwell,â galinda said softly, âitâs nicer when you help.â
elphaba froze for half a second just long enough for galinda to notice.
just long enough for her to hope.
after class, they walked back to their dorm again. the path felt familiar now, like something theyâd quietly claimed together.
galinda kept glancing at elphaba, trying to be subtle. she was not subtle.
âyouâre staring,â elphaba said.
galinda nearly tripped. âi am not.â
galinda hesitated. she could say homework. she could say lunch. she could say anything safe.
instead, she said, very quietly, âyou.â
galindaâs heart leapt into her throat. âi mean not in a weird way. just you know. thinking. casually. lightly. gently.â
âgently,â elphaba repeated, sounding dazed.
galinda nodded, cheeks burning. âyes. gently.â
elphaba looked at her for a long moment, something soft and startled in her eyes.
âgalinda,â she said, voice low, âsomething is happening.â
galinda swallowed. âi know.â
âdoes it⌠scare you?â
galinda thought about it. the warmth in her chest. the flutter in her stomach. the way elphabaâs presence felt like sunlight she didnât know sheâd been missing.
âno,â she said. âi think it feels⌠nice.â
elphaba exhaled, slow and relieved. âyes. it does.â
they reached the dorm steps, and this time, galinda didnât wait for elphaba to open the door.
she reached out first not to touch, not yet, but close enough that their hands hovered inches apart.
a hint. a question. a beginning.
elphaba looked down at their almostâtouching hands, then back up at galinda.
galinda felt her heart bloom.
âcome on,â she whispered. âletâs go inside.â
and elphaba followed her.
(do we even do that on tumblr???)
