timeline of my facial expressions while listening to mag 196
...basira's going to fucking pass out the second the tape recorder turns on the next ep isn't she. jon what was your plan here
there's so much going on in mag 35!!! one of those eps i thought i remembered entirely but very much didn't.
i wonder *why* gerry was actually there? did mary send him or was it his own idea? the book he gets is obviously mary's bone dropping book from the ex altiora ep, but was he already rebelling against her and intending to destroy it or was he working with her? i want a gerry timeline
jurgen leitner is really painted as an absolute rich asshole from the beginning by that conversation the statement giver describes. like seriously holy fuck
i thought smirke did get to design at least one church? there's that statement about the murderous shadow in a church basement and i could swear smirke was mentioned as the architect
i know it's a thing to joke about jon being way too sceptical in s1 but like. he doesn't even try to dismiss this statement and many others? of course this one has a lot of context he already knows with gerry and leitner there, but the trend i'm noticing with my relisten is that when he's presented with a live statement he has a hard time *addressing the thing that made the statement givers so afraid* and whether it's real, rather than just being mean for the sake of it. which of course checks out really well with the reasoning he gives later, so idk i guess this is more me noticing that jon's characterisation has been thought out and consistent from the beginning in a way i haven't paid attention to before.
and here's what i really care about: jon calls for martin *specifically* when he notices the worm. he does sound pretty angry but the way he says it really makes me think it's just the same deflection he does with the statements, as in hiding his fear behind anger, while actually seeking help from him here. i'm not sure but i think martin might have caught onto at least that by this point...
and also breekon and hope!!! hello breekon and hope you're both creepy as hell and you shouldn't be mean to martin (also s1 martin voice... i love it sm)
I HAVEN'T BEEN THIS GIDDY WITH FEAR AND EXCITEMENT SINCE 180, LITERALLY ONE OF THE BEST EPISODES IN THE ENTIRE PODCAST

on a relisten mag 31 is great bc
when the statement starts jon's voice instantly shifts from a slightly off archivist voice to convey pure shithead in a way it's never done before this point
the statement giver who just wants to prove his hilariously fragile masculinity gets hunted for sport by some dude who just casually saunters around the woods the guy thought were peak Manly Survival he would get to terrorize deer in
jon finishes reading the statement and just goes "fuck this i have worms and my feelings for martin to worry about" and ends the recording (this one's not so funny)
Mag 29 (cheating death) isn't really the finest specimen of the general tma vibes but honestly it's still up there as one of my favorite episodes of the entire podcast. The statement is kinda tropey for tma but i like its twists (and detailed descriptions of gambling) and it just feels like it carries implications of the world the statements reveal being wider than the previous ones have shown. The concept of retired grim reapers roaming the world is just the type of a softly depressing yet mystical to really resonate with me in a gentler way than the statements usually do.
also i'm very partial to jon's soft "perhaps that's fitting" to the token crumbling in his hand!! you and me jon, we're not above the gentle yet oppressignly melancholic poetry of nathaniel thorp's existence!!!
here's a hot tma take: the only emotions i feel over Jonathan Archivist Sims canonically eating rum raisin ice cream on Martin Blackwood's birthday are kinship and envy because rum raisin is the best ice cream flavor and i haven't had any in years
martin can throw little a brick at jonah. not to kill him but as a treat
MAG 193 Spoilers:
Jonah/Elias: Enough. Tell me, why are you here?
Archivist (Statement): I…I don’t know
Jonah/Elias: Were you drawn here?
Archivist (Statement): Yes, I was.
Jonah/Elias: Against your will?
Archivist (Statement): No.
Jonah/Elias: Then why did you heed the call?
Archivist (Statement): Because…this is the place I know I should be.
Jonah/Elias: Good. The job is yours.
Thinks about how this statement is Elias Bouchard’s interview but also very handily doubles as a direct conversation between Jon and Jonah/the Eye. Thinks about Jon’s change in tone during this exchange. Thinks about how Jon and Elias both had traumatic events associated with books/Leitners. Thinks about both Elias and Jon “thanking him for the opportunity.” Thinks about how Jonah was interviewing Elias to be his replacement and how the Eye wants Jon to replace Jonah. Thinks about -
also mirrors jon's journey and arrival to the panopticon way too well to not have horrifying implications (the job is yours)

so that's why jon felt the eye wanted him to "emerge" in 162... that's his domain... that's why he felt like he was pulled up the stairs... wanna bet the eye absolutely won't let him leave
thinking about mag 15 (lost johns' cave) and how jon "decided not to follow up" on laura popham's statement in which she survived an encounter with an entity by having her sister, effectively a bystander, taken instead
no further comments aside from this. great ep
i'm rly bad at appreciating the soundscaping in tma but judging by the length of the list they have in the credits of this episode i can tell that my honest opinion is: holy fuck
love to feel parasocially connected with all the other university students vibing with mag 186 on the dash rn

some nitpicky thoughts about mag 184:
what's fascinating to me about the other guy in the ant domain is that his relationship to the ants sounds basically like jane prentiss? but despite forming such a strong relationship w a manifestation of the corruption he failed to become and avatar and instead is now afraid of killing the creatures he loves, so did something stop him from becoming an avatar? what are the implications of that?
also i know it's all soup but if i were to classify that i'd say his fear of accidentally killing them has lonely and vast-ish vibes instead of corruption. which entities responsible aside makes the domain VERY strange, because the two people we witness in it are afraid of extremely different things. the ants are a running theme but not as the *source* of the fear for both him and jordan, which is completely new i think.
damn jonny........thas so deep........
if jonny ever runs out of things to write he definitely has the voice for narrating nature documentaries
