âWe cannot afford to have a society in which a significant fraction of our best young minds think that cheating is okay,â he told Inside Higher Ed. âThat leads to a declining society, to a failed society. âWe cannot choose to become idiots.â

De-anthropomorphizing language talks about computer systems in terms of their functionality (what people build and/or use them to do), assigns agency to people using systems and not systems, and avoids aggrandizing metaphors about cognition. We aim to find substitutes that are as self-explanatory as possible, so that you can just go ahead and use them without having to explain. (Though of course, if someone asks "Why are you calling it that?" that's also a great opening.) ... Examples: artificial intelligence â probabilistic automation hybrid intelligence â augmented human intelligence image recognition â image labeling speech recognition â automatic transcription the model shows bias â the model reflects bias model mistakes â model errors chatbots are good at ⌠â chatbots are good for ⌠hallucination â undesirable output

Soaring DRAM and NAND prices are putting severe profitability pressure on the sub-$400 smartphone market, with memory costs nearly doubling as a share of the bill of materials. Omdia examines this shift as vendors pull back from low-end segments and focus more on premium models, where component costs allow greater flexibility.

Other experts argue that the problem isnât games or technology per seâitâs the thoughtless way that schools are using them. A well-designed game âcan be extremely effective in not just getting kids interested in the subject matter, but to help them understand why theyâre doing it in the first place,â Jan Plass, a professor of digital media and learning sciences at NYU, told me. He cited a 2008 game called Immune Attack, developed in part by scientists, in which players must navigate a nanobot through a patientâs bloodstream to spur their immune system to fight off infections. He contrasted that with gamified tools such as Prodigy, which simply bolt multiple-choice questions onto unrelated game templates. Itâs a lazy approach, but itâs cheap and accessible, and it dovetails with an education system geared toward standardized tests.

For too long, the university has ignored the wisdom of the donor class and hired based on academic excellence. Regrettably, this has led to the underrepresentation of discredited viewpoints in elite higher education. Many ideas that enjoy enormous popularity among billionairesâcryogenic immortality, disregard for punctuation, the Antichristâhave scandalously been excluded from our labs and classrooms. No longer. We solemnly vow to dismantle systemic barriers to inclusionâsuch as shared governance, apolitical job searches, and the discriminatory practice of vetting ideasâand to ensure that all viewpoints, however dubious, enjoy equal footing in the academy.
