i'm famous. for  all  she  knows, this could  be  nothing  but  a  tall  tale. but then  again, clementine  doesn’t  exactly  verse  herself  in  sports  culture… or  anything  that requires  a  human  to, y’know,  sit  down  in  front  of  a  screen  and  absorb  information. she’s  part  of  the  archaic  herd  that  still slam  their  cellphones against  the  wall  as  an  easy  fix (damn  you,  technology — forever  elusive  mistress)! so,  despite her  many  reservations, she  gives  the  stranger  a  chance. “hope yer pants aren’t totally burnin’ up right now, man.” silvery  fingers  reach  forward, clamping  down  on  his  cheeks  to  make  puppeteering  of  his  face  easier, bug  eyes  expanding  further  each  time  a  new  angle  is  revealed. what  answer  is  she  hoping  to  find  hidden  within  a  mole  or  wrinkle? well, it’s  an  energy  she  seeks. the calm energy  of  someone  truthful, to be exact.

                      even   in   a   town   this   small   ,   somehow   they   still   found   him.   maybe   it   was   lingering   recognition   from   the   lone   stars   days,   maybe   it   was   paranoia   refusing   to   loosen   its   grip.   graham   wasn't   entirely   sure   anymore.   he   leaned   a   little   farther   over   the   bar   ,   lowering   his   voice   as   he   caught   the   waitress's   attention.   “   hey   ...   can   you   do   me   a   favor   and   just   stay   here   for   a   minute   ?   talk   to   me   ?   ”   his   brow   pinched   with   an   apologetic   look   ,   glancing   over   his   shoulder   before   looking   back   at   her.   “   i   swear   i'm   not   bein'   weird.   i   just   need   to   look   occupied.   promise   i'll   tip   you   well.   ”

when bosses of jobs past claim clementine's a lousy worker, their  tongues  aren’t  exactly  spilling  any  mistruths.  they’re  actually  being  quite  kind,  believe  it  or  not.  and,  even  though  this  is  her  number  who-knows-anymore  gig  of  the  month,  she  still  can’t  be  bothered  to  even  pretend  to  go  through  the  motions.  instead,  her  torso  is  lazily  draped  across  the  sticky  bar  (a  frizzy  tablecloth),  unabashedly analyzing  the  moves  of  two  strangers  on  what  appears  to  be  their  first  date. clue number one: tips  of  shoes  kissing  beneath  the  table.

“hm?”  her  head  turns  first,  eyes  sticking  to  the  romantic  gesture  for  as  long  as  possible  before  begrudgingly  flicking  to  the  secretive  customer. he  doesn’t  immediately  capture  her  attention — not  until  he  looks  over  his  shoulder,  anyway. that  gets  her  lips  twitching, her wheels turning. is  he…  hiding? “duh, of  course, man! what  kinda  waitress  would  i  be  if  i  denied  yer  wishes, huh?” so  now  she  chooses  to  care  about  being  good  at  this  thing.  a  tad  convenient, sure, but he doesn’t need to know that. “right  answer? a  fuckin’  terrible  one. sadistic, even.”

                       volunteer   work   often   came   with   a   caveat   :   sooner   or   later   ,   somebody   had   to   do   the   hard   labor.   today   it   came   in   the   form   of   a   pipe   that   gave   out   with   a   deafening   crack.   “   ah   ,   shit   !   ”   water   exploded   across   the   room   in   a   violent   spray   ,   drenching   everything   within   reach.   rust   was   already   moving   before   the   echo   had   faded   ,   clawing   his   overshirt   over   his   head   and   throwing   it   against   the   torrent   in   a   futile   attempt   to   keep   the   worst   of   it   from   blasting   them   in   the   face.   beneath   it   ,   a   faded   black   t-shirt   clung   to   the   broad   frame   of   a   man   built   by   work   that   left   scars   instead   of   pay   raises.

a  nightmarish  volunteer  to  many, the  only  tasks  (if  one  can  even  call  them  that)  clementine  is  completing today  are:  recklessly  pointing  sharp  scissors  at  innocent  folks  who  just  want  to  go  about  their  duties,  toothy grin  eerily  big  as  she  exclaims, come  get  yer  free  trim; snooping  on  any  conversation  unlucky  enough  to  float  near  her  pointy  ears;  morphing  into  somewhat of a  flesh-and-bones obstacle, standing  in the  work-zone of others while  they  attempt  to, well, work. her  moment of rest — though  she  hardly  earned  any — interrupted  by  a sudden explosion  of  water. movement  isn’t instantaneous;  instead  she  watches  the  scene  unfold with  a  now-soggy  cigarette  tipping  from  the  corner  of  her  mouth, bug  eyes  locked  on  the  pipe vs. man action,  silvery  hands  coming  together  to  cheer  him  on. alas, fuckin' get 'im! gets cut  short  when  rust’s  booming  voice  finds  her.  “sorry,  man, i'm –” she  approaches  with  the  speed  of  a  lazy  cat,  staring  down  at  the  toolbox  like  it’s  an  alien  artifact,  giving  it  an  inquisitive  kick for good measure.
