Building healthy habits one step at a time
* Healthy habits are built through small actions repeated consistently. This is extremely important for you to internalize. Small actions + long term consistency = a healthy habit.
* Start with one habit at a time so you don't overwhelm yourself or burn out in a matter of days.
* Make your first step so easy that it's almost impossible to skip.
* Increase the difficulty gradually as your habits become automatic. You’ll reach the ‘automatic habits’ territory a lot easier and faster if you make your starting point suuuper easy. It will actually require nearly the same amount of mental effort to just do 30 seconds of jumping jacks as it will to go to the gym for an hour. If you’re not in the habit of exercise, putting your phone down to get moving will still have friction either way. So by making your habit formation set to extreme easy mode, you will get to the point of “I am someone who wakes up and immediately exercises” with less suffering, and then you can increase intensity.
* Make a daily attempt, even if you only do it at a 30% level instead of 100% perfection.
* Tie a new habit to something you already do every day to make it easier to remember.
* Create an environment that makes healthy choices the easiest choices. This includes your phone btw. And your dating choices. And your friends.
* Remove small obstacles that make good habits harder to follow. Don’t try to negotiate yourself out of this. Willingly allowing something that prevents you from reaching your goals to take up real estate in your environment/life is a huge reason why you never reach the success you crave. Stop that??
* Accept that missing one day isn't failure, just don't let one missed day become a pattern. Reflect on why you had a ‘miss day’ and consider what you can do to prevent it from happening again tomorrow.
* Replace unhealthy habits with healthier alternatives to take up that space. Sometimes the healthier alternative may not be more so-called productivity, but actually rest and relaxation.
* Build routines that fit your dream life rather than copying someone else's. For example, the routine of a mega successful CEO may seem like peak performance, but are you even into the work work work go go go type of life? If not, idk if that 5am ice bath is necessary for you to recreate but that’s up to you lol.
* Be patient because lasting change is measured in months and years, not days.
* Trust that tiny improvements made every day eventually create remarkable results. It’s really that simple.
This photoshoot is dedicated to all the South Asian women out there who are often underrepresented in media simply because the color of their skin doesn’t fit South Asia’s unreasonable, fair&lovely, eurocentric beauty standards. As we all know, colorism is huge in India and Pakistan. Our society has come to the point where people talk about fighting oppression and uplifting women, but no one actually does anything about it. In this photoshoot I wanted to help represent darker skinned girls in the media, and address an issue through fashion photography.
Little girls grow up with their mothers bantering them about their skin color and how a man would never want them because they’re too dark. This does not help a girl’s self confidence, and it’s important to teach them from a young age that they’re beautiful and worthy in order to prevent them from being a self conscious teen. It’s also important to teach other girls that are lighter skinned to support these girls. In high school, a South Asian boy my friend had a crush on said that she was “too dark” and basically implied that’s the reason why he wouldn’t want a relationship with her. Comments like these are what destroy girl’s self confidence, especially when they’re young, vulnerable and lost. Support and help your sisters!
With the rise of young South Asians taking their pride in jewelry and colorful clothes to Instagram, it’s important not to romanticize the culture. Every culture has it’s good and bad, and although it’s totally fine to appreciate and be grateful for the good, we shouldn’t be silent about the bad especially if we are privileged. While our own South Asians are constantly romanticizing our culture, but not acknowledging it’s dirty laundry they are also promoting social marginalization. Women are treated horribly, LGBTQ isn’t a thing (especially in Pakistan), and more of our afro-south asian brothers and sisters are murdered on the streets the longer we stay silent. Instead of bringing light to these issues, our culture keeps quiet.
