Itās sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.
There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they arenāt used anymore!
I took calculus my senior year of high school, and I really liked the way our teacher framed this on the first day of class.
He asked somebody to raise their hand and ask him when we would use calculus in our everyday life. So one student rose their hand and asked, āWhen are we going to use this in our everyday life?ā
āNEVER!!ā the teacher exclaimed. āYou will never use calculus in your normal, everyday life. In fact, very few of you will use it in your professional careers either.ā Then he paused. āSo would you like to know why should care?ā
Several us nodded.
He picked out one of the varsity football players in the class. āYou practice football a lot during the week, right Tim?ā asked the teacher.
āYeah,ā replied Tim. āAlmost every day.ā
āDo you and your teammates ever lift weights during practice?ā
āYeah. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend a lot of practice in the weight room.ā
āBut why?ā asked the teacher. āIs there ever going to be a play your coach tells you use during a game that requires you to bench press the other team?ā
āNo, of course not.ā
āThen why lift weights?ā
āBecause it makes us stronger,ā said Tim.
āBingo!!ā said the teacher. āItās the same thing with calculus. Youāre not here because youāre going to use calculus in your everyday life. Youāre here because calculus is weightlifting for your brain.ā
And Iāve never forgotten that.
THIS.
When itās taught right, learning math teaches you logic and how to organize your brain, how to take a problem one step at a time and make sure every step can bear weight before you move to the next one. Ā Most adults donāt need to know integrals, but goddamn if I donāt wish everyone making arguments on the internet understood geometric proofs.
Scientific concepts broaden our understanding of how the world is put together, which does not mean that most adults ever really understand how light is refracted through a lens or why spinning copper wire creates electricityāand they donāt need to. Ā But science classes in general are meant to teach the scientific method: how to make observations and use them to draw conclusions, how to test those conclusions, how to be wrong and grow stronger from it.
History isnāt about dates and names of battles, itās about people, patterns, things weāve tried before and ought to learn from. Ā Itās about how everything is linked, how changing one circumstance can lead to changes in fifty others, cascading infinitely. Ā Literature is about critical thinking, pattern recognition, learning to listen to what somebody is saying and decide what it means to you, how you feel about it, and what you want to do with it.
Some facts matter: every adult should know how to read a graph, how global warming works, some of the basic themes and symbols that crop up in every piece of fiction. Ā But ultimately, content is less important later in life than context.
The good thing is, students who learn the content are likely to pick up at least some of the context, some of the patterns of thinking, even if they donāt realize it. Ā (The unfortunate thing is how the current educational system prioritizes content so much that a lot of students, and a lot of adults, donāt see the point in learning either, and teachers are overworked and held to standardize test grading scales such that itās hard for them to emphasize patterns of thinking over rote memorization, etc etc etc, but that is a wholeĀ different discussion.)

Life tips?
Iāll answer this question by echoing notes Iāve left for myself in my journal:
Eyes on the prize while you stop to smell the roses
You are loved, even when you donāt feel like it and even when those that love you donāt do it in the most efficient ways
Try not to take shit personally, everyone is just projecting
The success youāre looking for is in the work youāre avoiding
If he isnāt in awe of you, he doesnāt deserve you
Outgrow feeling like you have to play small to protect peoples feelings
The pain of self-discipline is better than the pain of regret
If you allow a man to feed you he has the power to starve youābe independent and have your own income and assets
If God puts rice in your basket, there is no point in wishing for soupāinstead of wallowing in self-pity, make the most of your situation and excel
Fashion is for your everyday life, not just for big occasions
Your brain changes more in your twenties than at any other time in your adult lifeāwhatever it is that you want to change about yourself, now is the time to do it by building good habits
Speed is relatively unimportant, forward is forward
Low self-esteem often leads to adverse self-fulfilling prophecies; break the cycle and build a strong sense of self-worth
The people who reach the greatest heights are not always the strongest, nor the most intelligent; they are the most responsive to change
Some of these are truisms Iāve found on Tumblr, some are quotes from books Iāve read, some are wisdom Iāve received from the people in my life, and others are things Iāve realized from self-reflection. This probably wasnāt the most organized but I hope it was still helpful!Ā ā£ļø

i havenāt seen any posts regarding the outcry thatās happening in the UK right now so:Ā the murder of sarah everard, who went missing in london last week and whose body was found a few days ago and the publication of a survey which found that 97% of women in the UK have experienced sexual harassment has caused public uproar about misogyny and violence against women. sarah, who went missing as she walked home from a friendās house, did everything women are āsupposed toā as she walked home in the dark: wear bright clothing, stick to main roads, walk under bright street lights. the last image of her alive is from CCTV footage taken about 30 mins walking distance from her home, in which she can be seen talking to her boyfriend on the phone.Ā the man whoās been charged with her murder is a cop. and not just any cop, a diplomatic protection officer, which means heās one of around 5% of cops in the UK that carries a gun, although he was allegedly off duty at the time. we donāt know how sarah was murdered yet, but her body, which was found dumped in woodland miles from her home, took a few days to properly identify for a yet unknown reason. (edit: she was identified by dental records, meaning she was no longer recognisable enough to be identified by a family member) FIVE independent investigations have been opened in connection to the copās arrest.Ā the uk gov is going to debate making misogyny a hate crime. violence against women isnāt new, but the level of outrage this time is significant.Ā women have had enough.

20.12.2020 // i finally met up with two of my friends i haven't seen since last december over the last week (one-on-one, with masks and safe distancing, etc.) and it was so lovely to see them again!!
I wish I was a Jane Austen character so that instead of going insane, i could've gone to London with my aunt and uncle when things got rough.
