Something I feel a lot of modern "alt kids" don't realize is that subculture once was subCULTURE. I remember back when the scene was scene, I was part of this friend group where it was literally all of us. We were kind of cliquey, and none of us ever uttered the words "we're scene" because we didn't gaf about labeling it. Even if we did care, there was no need for any of us to label it either because it was pretty damn obvious. We cared about what music we were listening to and giving each other split ends with shitty bathroom dye jobs and cutting our bangs with razors, and wearing makeup that made people call us raccoons. Above all else, it felt like a genuine family. Especially because people treated us like freaks because of the music we were listening to or the way we looked or whatever. We had each other to understand. How do people these days expect to be able to say "I'm this subculture, I'm this label" and not even identify or participate in any of it other than maybe having a shitty 2020 HOT Topic GIR hoodie?
I totally see this. Like people try to reduce it to fashion and music but its more lifestyle??? Thats the best word I’ve found for it. I am finally old enough to go to the club and I have been meeting so many other scene kids who look the part and party and collect fashion and diy. There just are not as many of us at this point . I get jealous seeing pictures from 20 year ago with friend groups full of scene kids.
I hope the older alternative people know if you’re looking at the internet youre going to see a lot of people who are only alternative from the comfort of their bedrooms. And there are a lot of us that are too busy to take outfit pictures because were out and about having fun. I also think that times have changed and as a subculture ages people like to start using mare labels but wtv. And also hashtags are important now unfortunately.
