#3 Harry Styles, "Adore You"

Though released in December 2019, Harry Styles’ Fine Line grew roots in 2020 thanks to undeniably catchy singles “Adore You” and “Watermelon Sugar.” And while lead single “Lights Up” officially ushered in Styles’ second album, it’s the Top 40-friendlier “Adore You” that best marks his place in pop today -- and scored him his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop Songs radio airplay chart. After all, in addition to a gorgeously crafted hit, there are few things better than having someone plea through pitch-perfect vocals to “just let me adore you.” Only a fool would turn down an offer like that. -- L.H.

It was the same place you met up with Jeff. A cozy corner was open when you arrived, you grabbed a seat and ordered a latte. Two minutes, five, then ten. 

Maybe he wouldn’t show up, make an excuse like so many times before and leave you wondering why people changed their minds.

January 2018

It’s six-thirty in the morning and pitch black outside when there’s a knock on Cecilia’s door. Coffee that’s just cool enough not to burn splashes over her hand as she instinctively looks over her shoulder, even though she can’t see the front door from where she’s sitting.

“What the fuck?” she mutters to herself, her brain half in the chapter she’s working on, the other half trying to figure out who would be knocking at her door at such a bizarre hour. It comes up with two options: it’s either a complete stranger there to murder her, or it’s someone who knows her writing schedule, knows she’ll be awake.
