Kinda hard to explain concept but it’s like when you’re on your rollercoaster and your tummy feels funny…it’s genuinely just your organs moving up and down with you and afterwards just wriggle back into place…yeah

GOD i hate this idea that not graduating when anticipated is considered “late” or “not on time” because it only just reinforces the stigma of being behind, not being as good as your peers, etc and it’s garbage! if you graduate at a time later than you had anticipated, youre still worthy of respect and you still graduated, whether it was a semester, a year, or thirty years down the line

phm movie #thoughts from someone who shotgunned the book last week, full spoilers ahead for both:
lotta stuff I really liked from the book hit the cutting room floor, and I don't begrudge it that, the movie's two and a half hours as is, but rip to the copyright infringement lawsuit and paving the sahara and nuking antarctica and dubois and shapiro's insane personalities and the "history used to be all about food" scene and rocky being a #proud scary space spider and the autocannibalism. generally the correct cuts to make in order to have a film people will actually Watch, but if they ever release that ninety minutes cut from the first test screening that would be really good for Me Specifically.
really visually nice overall, looked more like 60s-70s sublime scifi than 2010s maximalist scifi. which are genre terms I just made up but I think they convey the vibe, it was giving more 2001 than interstellar, the visual canvas had a lot of room to breathe.
stratt was quite different than the book, more emotional and less cutthroat, which I think objectively isn't Worse or anything I just personally have a real love for ruthless women so that was a loss for the Me Specifically community. I think my ideal unified stratt vision would have her doing some of her book atrocities without breaking a sweat And the karaoke scene And almost breaking down when she has to sic the guards on grace, the best of both worlds.
both grace and rocky got sillied up, and you win some and lose some with that so imo it's a net neutral, but for rocky this gave the added bonus of really making it clear that This Individual Is Not Well. this is someone who watched two dozen friends die and was completely alone for far too long afterwards, he's got not sense of boundaries and has recently acquired high level control freakism as a response to finally having another living being around and being completely unwilling to lose or be apart from him. but why grace and rocky have to be separate people question?
a few plot things got cut that I do think it makes less sense without, mainly a) that the amnesia was deliberately induced and b) that grace with choosing rocky and the rest of the eridians' lives over his own at the end. the movie conveyed that grace's decision to double back around was a choice to do something scary and embrace helping someone else at personal cost, but that cost was presented as not being able to go home, not that it was finally his real volitional sacrifice. which is a bit of a shame, movie rocky being so visibly An Individual Who Is Not Well would have reacted so beautifully to realizing grace had intended this rescue to be a suicide mission.
for a fun book-to-screen translation thing, we lost the little internal monologue bit about the ship making grace's coffee exactly how he likes it, but we see the same thing conveyed through all his clothing. the movie brings the fatal explosion down from nine days before launch to three, and stratt still packed all his stupid fucking science pun shirts to give him something he liked.
I'm finding it hard to put this one into words, but the movie gave me a much clearer sense of, like, embodiment and intimacy as the trade off for the book's internality, and I think the clearest example is the two versions of the scene where grace gets taken in against his will. I found the text version really affecting because it really conveyed that sudden feeling of fight-or-flight panic when you find yourself helpless and start reaching for any means of escape and already almost feel the pre-shame for what you're doing but not quite enough to stop you, and the film traded that for an attempt at physical flight that ends with grace getting pinned to the ground and forcibly drugged at his friends' behest. different but also very affecting flavor of panic and helplessness, and it really complemented the volitional intimacy with rocky.

I’ll never quite get over just how integrated kids are into daily Jedi life and the implications of that.
Dooku’s Temple "job" for years seems to have been “teaching lightsaber preschool.” Sifo-Dyas, the guy with the scary doom visions? Oh yeah, they have him working with infants, bringing babies to the Temple as a Seeker. Jocasta Nu is constantly depicted interacting with the younger generation of Jedi, teaching, helping, or mentoring. In TCW, she knows all the Padawans on sight.
There’s just something really ordinary and charming to me about this. Sure, Dooku is a terrifying 2m of spider limbs in a robe, but he’s still going down on one sinister knee to check out the little crying kid who got a finger crunched by one of those wooden training swords. How many of the TCW-era Jedi were once babies who played with Sifo-Dyas’s hair loopies or cuddled on his chest as he pointed his T-6 back toward the Temple after another successful Seeking mission? (Space is, after all, cold. 🥺) You just know Jocasta is in very reluctant possession of knowledge of every single teen Padawan drama, crush, or breakup. She tries to stay out of it, but she’s broken up fights and pulled particulars into her office for tea and a gentle lecture on the inherent self-destructiveness of gossip.
And these are not “just some” Jedi - they are all combat trained, politically important, at the top of their rank and even each sit on the Council at some point in their lives. The Jedi Order really went “super powerful space wizards with laser swords, yeah, but they should also all definitely know how to change a diaper."
By alien standards, despite being objectively very alien biologically, the Eridians are comparatively by our standards not that weird -they’re pretty cute, actually. Sure they’re ambush predators from a deathworld that disguise themselves as rocks, can hear through walls and see inside you, but that’s pretty tame, seen that before. Most of the horror tropes they would spawn are probably sympathetic acknowledgements of the vulnerabilities in their biology they have that they also find inconvenient, scary or just sad.
By comparison, Grace is a gross, wet, leaky space blob and everything about how he works is completely alien to the Eridians and anywhere from gross to unsettling to just completely alien. How many horror tropes do you think Grace births on Erid just by existing and being a weird alien and doing weird alien things (normal things we wouldn’t even think about).
The rock spider is more afraid of you than you are of it. Grace is an angel of a human being, yes, in the “be not afraid” sense. We are the scary aliens in this story.
If Dr Grace doesn’t actually tell Rocky about the specifically hydrochloric acid in the human stomach for a really long time, long enough for Rocky to get comfortable with his cold soft wet harmless alien friend… for Rocky to think of himself with easy superiority as the super-strong scary space spider… and only wayyy later after getting weirdly okay with his delicate friend’s various leaks and sprays is it revealed that Dr Grace could absolutely digest him. Die doing it, obviously, but those are Eridian-dissolving fluids that he’s vomited up once or twice.
and they were both space monsters…
i love phm so much here’s my shitty eridian pitch, wiggles.
wiggles is small. wiggles is tiny. wiggles is a grown ass eridian with a degree in electrical engineering.
wiggles also freak savior grace the fuck out

For years, sci-fi has asked, what if aliens were wetter than us. Project Hail Mary posits a new, daring question. What if we are the wet aliens
#is it creepy or wet? - you fool creepy and wet must complement each other to save us all
@animate-mush EXACTLY
Grace decides one day to give all of erid a lesson on Australia wildlife.
Spider-sonas become a popular thing and Grace has to mediate between Rocky and Adrian over who gets to be the Newcastle big boy and who gets to be the funnel web.
