The Start of Something || Hadley & Sam
Sam found himself fading in and out as Hadley explained her husbandās profession. He bobbed his head as if he was listening intently but his main focus was still on the decor of the house. Everything was stunning, though perhaps a little too overdone for Samās taste, and not at all bolted down. His eyes darted from one shiny object to the next. It was amazing that Hadleyās husband could afford so much. Even when Sam was swindling insurance companies out of big bucks, he could have never competed with Jacob. Struggling artists seemed to be a thing, especially in a place like Seattle, but it was rare to be in the presence of someone who had actually made it. Sam realized then, at a much slowly rate than Hadley, that Jacob wasnāt around.Ā
The con artist stopped gawking at all the things he wanted to slip into his pocket and started to pay attention to more important details of his surroundings. Sam could smell the food that Hadley had promised him and he frowned softly. Not only was he hungry, but it was apparent that Jacob had either forgotten their plans or was busy working. Hadley seemed convinced that it was the latter. When Hadley asked him if he would like a drink he nodded, āOh, yeah, thatād be great.ā His crutches made a scraping noise against the floor as he pushed himself forward, āMaybe a seat would be a good idea too.ā He winced, his gaze falling low to make sure that he didnāt leave any scuff marks behind, though he was sure Jacob could afford to get them removed.
Hadley continued through her home, not pausing for too long on the thought that her husband was late to meet her friend. Her heels continued to clack against the cold floor the entire way, but the sound had turned into a familiar one over the years of her life, and it was now more of a comforting soundtrack to her steps than anything else. Hadley knew how to work heels and her body in them; they made her feel confident, and she was rarely without them. She led Sam as best she could, but she let him stop to look around, figuring the single path to the kitchen wouldn't be too complicated to figure out.Ā
His voice carried over to her, mentioning a seat. She was reminded that Sam was not in the best shape. She thought about his accident from time to time, but with him, it was one of the furthest things from her mind, despite his crutches making it pretty obvious. "Oh, yeah, of course!" she said, crossing the kitchen and opening a cabinet. She pulled two wine glasses out, and held them both, upside-down, in one hand. With the other, she plucked a large bottle of red wine off of the counter. She carried the things over to a large, glass-top dining table and set them down. For a second, she considered pulling a seat out for Sam to sit down with more ease, but thinking back to his dismissal of her help earlier, she decided against it.Ā
Instead of sitting, herself, she moved back into the kitchen and began fishing through a drawer, in search of a corkscrew. She found one within seconds. Jacob liked to drink, and doing so in their house was extremely easy. She carried the bottle opener back to the table, sliding into a seat close to Sam's upon her arrival. She reached out for the bottle, and began winding the screw down into the cork. With little effort, the cork popped out, and Hadley smiled widely. She set the device down on the table next to her, and graciously filled the two glasses that she'd retrieved earlier. When she was done, she pushed one glass towards Sam, and set the bottle down on the table.
