ASPIRATIONS : Character Line-Up ^^ (+ personal criticisms on designs)
To make sure no one is confused, from left to right: Agnes, Elle, Ame, Isabella
Also another thing to keep in note; Agnes is based off of a dragon, Elle is based of a knight, and Isa is based off of a wizard
Sooo now that I have some rough drawings of each character, there’s a lot for me to talk about
For one the heights are totally incorrect. This is my fault considering I drew them all separately without fully checking whether or not their heights were accurate but all I can say is this: Agnes is the tallest, Elle and Ame share the same height but are the shortest, and Isabella is slightly shorter than Agnes. Totally my fault for not making it accurate but that can easily be fixed
Next, how they look together. Overall they look very off in a way?? And I may know why. The issue is more so with colors and design elements I put into them. First with color; the color palette of all of them together is Pink, Orange, Green, and Blue. At least with Elle, the only thing that makes her pink is mostly her hair (following in precure’s footsteps 😞) Otherwise, the rest of her fit is purple. This would be fine if it weren’t for the rest of the characters all having colors closely related to their set color.
OH and extra note, Ame doesn’t get included until later on in the story, so you could also just look at the main 3 instead and it’d still have this problem and at the same time she is kind of meant to be a bit out of place
The other issue is design elements. So as you can see three out of four characters have something in common……. If you guessed shoulder-less tops, you’d be correct! Now personally this is my fav design trope (mostly because I like wearing that kind of stuff personally) HOWEVER again, this makes Elle look a bit out of place. She IS the main character but she isn’t fully in tune with the others. However I can’t really give the same design to her considering her whole thing is being less feminine than the others
Another tiny nitpick is Isabella’s hat. Again I should’ve made the designs alongside eachother but like…. Her hat makes her stick out so much 😭 every other character does have a hair accessory, but it isn’t as like big as hers. I mostly plan on shrinking it down or at least changing it to fix the silhouette a little bit. Though to defend it a little, I intended for it to be a rough sketch, you can see that the other drawings all follow a similar format with lineart, coloring, and posing. I fully played around with Isa’s design so I didn’t want to rlly finalize anything
For possible solutions, I could make some of the designs borrow from Elle’s design (ex. Varying colors) however I did try this with Agnes and it went horrible the first time I tried with colors. Another is adding a bit more to designs. Less is certainly more but nothing really makes them stick out yknow? Another solution could be to change Elle’s design, but I need to do so in a way that doesn’t entirely ruin her overall character, if that makes sense? I kind of grew attached to her design tho since I made it like WAYYY back when I started highschool (just like Ame’s) but to love is to let go 💔💔
Sooo that’s mostly what I want to say about my characters!! I’d like to say that I am not great with character designs 😭 but I definitely CAN improve on them. They won’t stay like this forever and two out of four of them were mostly made to get an idea out since I eventually have to start making concept art of my story. So YES I know they look mid, but they WILL look better I promise like 10000000x. I did say this in a previous post, but there is so sos so much I really need to work on in regard to my art like anatomy, rendering, and obviously character designs.
Oh and yes IK ALL THE BOOTS LOOKS THE SAME I know 😭😭 see there’s so much I can see wrong with it
