Bash’s character arc as a queer man in the 80’s, involving him discovering/denying his sexuality, trying to cope with the passing of his closeted long-time best friend who dies of aids, him not admitting to himself that he loved said best friend in a romantic way, objecting in the middle of Rhonda’s green card wedding by telling her the lie that he’s secretly been in love with her for weeks and “has just had trouble sorting his emotions”, and then convincing the already desperate Rhonda to marry him instead, all clearly done as a big gesture for himself to believe he’s straight and keep being in denial about his sexuality and feelings for a man who he can now never confess to or have a romantic relationship with, nor can he grieve him properly because of said denial.
