My last body positive post for the day is from Bitch Planet #3: The Secret Origin of Penny Rolle, written by Kelly Sue DeConnick. This issue is an instant classic in the realm of feminist body tales. In this sci-fi dystopian future world, Penny is rigged up to fancy Drago-esque machines and forced to look in the mirror and see her ideal self, of course with the assumption that she sees a thinner version of her body. The jokes on you, patriarchs! Penny is already the ideal version of herself. “…and you bastards ain’t never gonna break me.” Dystopia becomes utopia, and Penny’s in a place that I want to be. Except for the prison and the machines and the physical/emotional abuse and the floating man faces, of course.
This issue is one of my all time favorites of all the comic books I have read. This panel in particular is just so spit on amazing.

OK, so here’s what’s disturbing me except for that whole rampant sexism thing [1]: CBS bought this pilot and went so far as to show it to some test audiences. They had it in their hands and did stuff with it before they decided it was “too female.” Did they not understand that a TV show about Nancy Drew was probably going to, well, lean female? That it would be about, specifically, a woman who solved mysteries? Do TV executives not read boOH I see now, never mind. Got it. Carry on.

It’s difficult to determine precisely how many women have been attacked on the basis of rejection. This list consists of cases between Jan. 1, 2015 and Feb. 15, 2016 that were reported by media outlets. It is likely far from comprehensive — and there’s a pretty horrible reason why.
