And, listen... I understand the underlying sentiment was ostensibly protecting what many consider to be a British "struggle" meal, and none of us are immune to classicism... But the "fixes" she made to the recipe were specifically based in Black American culinary traditions, which... Historically damn near that entire tradition is basically elevating struggle meals with whatever meager means you have available to you, and you cannot ignore that context.

Genuinely, last week I was listening to someone talk about the origins of why Black Americans tend to prefer their steaks more well done than white Americans do, and before they even got into it, I thought to myself, I bet it has to do with systemic racism.

And I was right.

I understand having a knee jerk reaction to what you perceive as classism, but I find it hard to ignore that this Black woman dressed well in a nice kitchen is getting so much outsized vitriol for doing something that is based in a history of people surviving some of the most horrific living conditions humanly possible. I don't think you can call someone classist simply for merely doing something that was born not just of extreme poverty, but the outright complete dehumanization of chattel slavery.

If she had been sitting there saying, "you broke pieces of shit could never", then, okay... But that's not what's happening here. I don't think it's weird that a Black American woman has smoke for British cuisine not using much spices, I really don't.

I genuinely think seeing a well dressed Black woman in a nice kitchen pissed these people off, whether they realize it or not. I truly don't think a white woman doing this would have gotten anywhere near the hate, even though the argument for classism there would have been much stronger based on context.

I mean one of her videos is literally teaching you how to make Honey Hennessy BBQ Vienna sausages so like... Is the classism in the room with us right now?

FFS stands for facial feminization surgery

Hi! I'm Lilith's partner, a disabled two spirit named Aiy, and I'm trying to spread her campaign around~💖

Her first FFS surgery will be in February. It took us about 5 months to raise what we have so far and I'm hoping if I post about her FFS now (November) then we'll meet her goal by then.

mutual aid means no hierarchy between givers and receivers

a new mutual aid org, Bridge of Solidarity, has been established in the gaza strip by 17 year old poet yazan mohammed in response to the exploitative practices conducted by some charities and encouraged by the existing charity-based model of fundraising for gaza. according to BoS: "the western attention economy and pity economy plays a large role in who lives or dies in gaza." essentially, people need to make themselves marketable in order to receive lifesaving aid; people who are not marketable die. yazan himself wrote about the damage this can do to one's self image, which you can read here.

after trying for a year to respect his own privacy, my friend siraj was also pressured into posting images of his son's emaciated body in order to gain sympathy from westerners.

we cannot keep forcing people to do this anymore.

I never thought I would write these words… 😔

I never imagined waking up to endless screams,

Running barefoot through smoke and fire,

Searching for my mother among the rubble,

Only to find nothing but silence… a heavy silence telling me that no one will answer me anymore. 💔

In one moment, everything changed.

Our home became a memory, my mother’s embrace became the past,

And my father's face, now absent, is the last thing I hold in my memory.
