prev -- I appreciate your tags; these are also things I was thinking about when I saw canes fans talking about what to chant at Hart, and I do agree on the signs/jokes about "how does it feel" etc. being gross.

on the chant, specifically, though: the conclusion I ultimately came to was that it's already been trivialized and normalized. we've now had months of national broadcasts praising Hart relentlessly, framing him as a redemption arc; and months of vegas silencing and preventing any press from even asking questions.

obviously, chants are not where this should stop, but hockey media has done eveyrthing it can to prevent the conversation. and it was very moving to me now, during the most watched games of the year -- the literal finals -- every person watching that broadcast (and all those coward announcers) could clearly hear the crowd chanting the most well known anti-rape slogan there is.

So even if not everyone is chanting with proper motives, it still forces it out of the darkness, and it is also a sign to those few in hockey media who have challenged the narrative that despite how few of them there are, there is a much larger group in the fanbase that still gives a shit and appreciates their continued stand.

thank you OP! i ultimately came to the same conclusion. he should know no moment of peace and we all should refuse to let him or the NHL or broadcasters or media sweep it under the rug and this is a great example of this. just made me think of some of the bigger picture things I’ve been thinking about this season in how we as fans talk about this so we ensure our anger doesn’t override our sensitivity. fully agree though - having this many people chanting the most well known anti-rape slogan in a setting like this is a clear and strong message.

#i have really complicated feelings about things like this #like on the one hand this man is evil #and should never be allowed outside again without being publicly shamed #and gary and the league and everyone on the ice #and especially everyone involved in making the decision to sign him #should be constantly forced to thing about the reality of the evil they’re standing beside #but also #something about these types of chants #and the tweets/signs/whatever that are like #’oh so now he knows what no means’#or ‘how does it feel when someone ignores you saying stop’#are also icky to me #because this is not a ‘gotcha’ or a chirp or a told ya so #this is a violent crime with a real life victim #and it shouldn’t just become an opportunity for a zinger against the opponent #idk man i get the thoughts behind it but it’s just complicated #and i fear it will end up unintentionally trivializing it #just thoughts I’ve had lately #probably friend who’s too woke-ing it up here #but i digress #we are all united in the stance that he will rot in hell
