Ghouls are about halfway between a ghost and a zombie (the pop culture kind, not the Haitian voodoo kind) in that they’re a spirit of one kind or another inhabiting a body they’ve built out of gravedirt and ash and instinctive magic. Some of them remember lives before this state, some don’t. They can’t usually enter inhabited dwellings, but abandoned buildings can shelter large groups of them. This often results in little families forming out of ghouls living in the same area.

A lot of ghouls feel compelled to lure away and devour humans, so they can take their shape and reinforce their self-perception - and with it, their lifespan. As long as they’re not obnoxious about it, no one’s too bothered, unless the people they’ve eaten had families, which can cause a bit of a problem.

In more recent years, a lot of ghouls have been doing their best to form a larger ghoul culture linking the smaller families that coalesce as naturally as individual ghouls do, and have been encouraging eating living things other than humans. This has resulted in a lot of animal-shaped ghouls, especially in cities. If you’re out at night and think you saw a cat, or a fox, or a crow, but it’s gone the moment you turn to look, it may well have been a ghoul. Unlike human ghouls, they have varying degrees of sentience, but lower sentience actually means they’re more likely to survive daylight.
