The year is 2029. Marvel has finally released their newest, world shattering movie to rival Endgame. Arguments about recasting stopped years ago once people started to enjoy the new X-Men and Fantastic Four choices. Everyone is excited to see what could possibly come next for our favorite heroes
You sit in the theater, gazing up at the screen in awe as the heroes once again rally together to stop Kang the Conqueror from using parts of their universe to create his own, perfect one. He begins to try to push his chosen worlds together. Reality begins to shift as portals open up, revealing alternate universe versions of the MCU friends and foes first teased in Multiverse of Madness. Our heroes donât know what to do.
At one point early in the fight, Wanda is surrounded in the field. She has her children with her, fully realized as Speed and Wiccan, as well as Vision who has newly become revived once Wanda gave Vision the power of the mind stone now that sheâs mastered chaos magic and doesnât need it anymore. MCU Magneto has joined them as well, as it was recently revealed that he is her true biological father. She is more than powerful enough to beat any enemy, but an alternate universe being wielding chaos magic catches her off guard. They take aim at her children, but Wanda dives to protect them. This seems like the end for the Scarlet Witch. Then, time stops.
Distantly, Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics begins to play.
Evan Peterâs Peter Maximoff steps out of a portal behind Wandaâs family, followed by the rest of the Fox Movie-verse X-Men, most prominently Magneto, but thatâs not all. Aaron Taylor-Johnsonâs Pietro from a different universe comes rushing into view, meeting Peter Maximoff halfway for the coolest double speedster slow-mo scene that has ever hit cinemas as they correct the battlefield on their way to their familyâs aid. Even Polaris is there, in whatever iteration is most fitting, whether that be from the Gifted or something entirely new.
There will be an epic X-Men team-up between the old and new soon, but first Wanda needs their help.Â
Time starts up again, and Wanda, who so recently lost everything, is surrounded by family at last. A Ralph Bohner joke is made. They share a knowing look, with the boys hugging their beloved Uncle P. one more time, before the Maximoff family all fights together for both the first and the last time.

The first thing you felt through the warmth of peaceful sleep was the blinding sunrays piercing through the darkness, causing you to make a face and wonder why on earth the curtains were open this earlyâ
Oh.
You werenât in your room.
A smile curled your lips as you shifted closer to Benedict who looked to be still in deep sleep, one arm thrown over his eyes while the other kept you close to his chest even in his sleep. You had found a couple of soil bags last night to use as pillows along with a very old blanket that you suspected they used to carry the said bags, and thrown it over you. You let your hungry gaze wander down from his handsome face to his perfect torso; he looked like a statue one of his idols would sculpt in Renaissance in such an effortless way that even looking at him made your heart skip a beat, your cheeks burning when you remembered last night.
Well, as it turned out Benedict was right.
It felt absolutely divine.
You nibbled on your lip, dragging your eyes away from him to your surroundings. In daylight, the greenhouse looked so beautiful that it felt as if you were in a dream, making you heave a sigh. You slowly pulled away from him, careful not to wake him up and reached for your shift to put it on. It was dry unlike the rest of your clothes but it was so see-through in the sunlight that if it were any other time you would have never thought of walking around just in that, except thatâ
Well.
Considering last night, it wouldnât be a scandal.
You bit down a smile and got off the floor, approaching the Middlemist Red. You still couldnât believe it was yours, after years and years of dreaming of seeing it at least once in some sort of exhibition, now you could see it anytime you wanted in your own greenhouse. You gently caressed the petals with your fingertip, then checked the soil in the pot to see whether it needed water but it was still damp so you figured it could wait until later in the day. You looked around, taking in the sight.
This was actually yours. All of it.
âI thought you left.â
You looked over your shoulder and turned around to look at Benedict better, your heart skipping a beat as you did. He had pulled himself up into a sitting position with the blanket pooled around his waist, his hair messy as he ran his hand through it, that lopsided grin you loved so much playing on his lips. You took a deep breath to snap yourself out of the haze, then leaned back to the shelf.
âWell this is my greenhouse,â you said airily, motioning between you before pointing at him. âSo hypothetically, if anyone was to leaveâŚâ
He chuckled, his eyes gleaming. âMm, should I leave then?â
âNo,â you said with a grin. âIn fact, I donât think either of us should. Letâs just stay here for the rest of our lives.â
He stretched out his arm as if offering you his hand. âWill you come here please?â
You pretended to think about it, then approached him with a giggle that turned into a squeal when he grabbed you by the waist to pull you to his lap. You wrapped your arms around his neck, your heart slamming against your ribcage as he leaned in to kiss you, making you heave a happy sigh.
âGood morning my love,â he muttered to your lips, stroking your cheekbone and coaxing a smile from you.
âGood morning.â
âRemind me again, why are you wearing clothes?â
You let out a small laugh. âFor decorum, obviously,â you teased him. âI mean surely you cannot disagree with propriety, can you?â
âI absolutely can,â he said, stealing a kiss from you as his hand trailed up your leg, pushing the skirt of your shift up, awakening fire on your skin. âTo hell with decorum.â
You felt nearly intoxicated as a giggle climbed up your throat and he rolled you over to get on top of you, settling between your legs, holding himself up on one arm to look down at you with a soft smile.
âGod, Iâll never be able to paint thisâŚâ he murmured and you tilted your head, stroking your fingertips over his chest, right over his heart.
âWell I suppose youâll have to settle for the feeling rather than the depiction,â you tried to joke, stealing a look at him before the thought hit you, making you furrow your brows. He knew you too well not to notice it, so he pulled back just a little.
âWhat is it?â
âThis doesnât change things, does it?â
âWhat do you mean?â
You swallowed thickly, looking up at him.
âYou wonât take it back now that IâŚâ you trailed off. âYou wonât stop loving me now that I said I love you?â
That fond look appeared in his blue eyes again and he smiled at you, then reached to your hand to rest your palm flat against his chest, letting you feel his strong heartbeat.
âThis life and beyond, remember?â he murmured. âI couldnât stop loving you if I tried.â
You pressed your lips together and he tilted his head.
âYou donât believe me?â
âI do, but I just donât see how,â you muttered. âI mean Iâveâ Iâve been terrible to you.â
âNo you havenât.â
You scoffed. âBen.â
âWhat?â he said with a small laugh. âYou havenât.â
âJust yesterday I accused you of cheating on me.â
âI mean it brought us here to this so Iâm not complaining,â he said, wiggling his brows and drawing a burst of laughter from your lips.
âNo but ever since we met, Iâve beenâŚâ you mumbled. âNot nice to you.â
âYou were.â
You shot him a look and the corners of his lips twitched upwards.
âItâs a subjective matter.â
You looked around the greenhouse before turning your glances to him. âCan I ask you something?â
âYou can ask me anything.â
âWhy did you do all this for me when you didnât even know I was in love with you?â
He frowned slightly, thinking for a moment before shaking his head.
âI didnât do this so that you would fall in love with me,â he said. âI did it because I want you to be happy. Simple as that.â
You felt as if your heart was melting and you leaned up to kiss him but the sound of a movement by the door reached you, making Benedict roll off you to shield you with his body as soon as the door opened and Mr. Binsted walked in.
âOhâmy apologies!â he exclaimed as soon as his eyes fell on you two, then he looked up, his whole face going red. âSir. Maâam.â
âMr. Binsted,â Benedict said, trying to keep a straight face as if nothing was out of the ordinary while you stayed behind him, your cheeks burning. âGood morning.â
âHello,â you murmured, still hiding behind Benedict and Mr. Binsted nodded, keeping his eyes on the ceiling.
âGood morning, Iâll justâcome back later,â he stammered and left, almost stumbling over his own feet in his haste. You buried your face to Benedictâs shoulder, gripping his arm tightly and letting out a whine while he started laughing.
âOh my GodâŚâ you said. âOh my God, I can never look him in the eye again.â
Benedict tried to stop his laughter and shook his head, then turned to you.
âCouldâve been worse,â he commented and grabbed you by the waist to get you under him, making you let out a clear laugh despite yourself. âBesides, look on the bright side.â
You raised your brows, still smiling. âAnd what is that?â
âWell you see my love, nowâŚâ he dipped his head to brush his lips against yours, that familiar fire spreading through your veins as his hand pushed your skirt up. âNow we know no one will be disturbing us for a while.â
                                        *
If somebody told you that one day you would have the greenhouse of your dreams, including the rarest flower in the world and you would spend the whole day away from it, you would have laughed in their face.
Yet in your defense, Benedict had a way of convincing you.
It felt like you were put under some sort of spell, that fire only he managed to breathe into life taking over you until the only thing in your mind was him. After leaving the greenhouse, you had every intention of going back once you had some breakfast but before you knew it, you both found yourselves in his bed.
You could not believe you had denied yourself the bliss for so long when you couldâve been doing this for months and more importantly, you couldnât believe you were still hungry for him even after spending hours in the bed with him, completely lost in the pleasure.
And the worst part? You actually had to step away from his room and from him so that your maid could do your hair for tonight, for Gordonâs gala.
For some reason, every single act except the marital act felt entirely unnecessary to you now that you had gotten a taste of it.
Paula retrieved her hands from your hair, letting you look in the mirror to check your bun and you turned your head, then smiled at her.
âThank you.â
âOf course maâam,â she said as you stood up, and put your corset over your shift. She went behind you to put the laces into the hoops but you turned your head when you heard the knock on the door.
âY/N?â
A bright smile warmed your lips. âCome in Ben!â
The door opened and he stepped inside, and you turned to Paula.
âYou may leave, thank you.â
Paula curtsied and left the room, and you grinned at Benedict, leaning back to the vanity.
âYou look too handsome,â you said, your lips pulled into a small pout as your gaze wandered over him. Unlike you, he looked very much ready to go outside and attend this gala you two were expected in, yet the only thing you wanted to do was to drag him to bed, outside world be damned.
And judging by the mischievous look in his blue eyes, he shared the sentiment.
âLetâs just skip this one,â he said, approaching you and your jaw dropped, an exaggerated shock clear on your face.
âWe made a promise,â you reminded him. âItâs Gordonâs gala.
He hummed, leaning down to kiss you and you giggled, turning around.
âHelp me?â you asked airily, watching him on the mirror a playful smirk curled his lips, then his hands went to the laces of your corset. A giddy laugh climbed up your throat as you reached back to grab at his wrist when you realized the corset getting even looser.
âLace up Ben, not unlace.â
âWe can just tell them we had something to do.â
âLace up,â you teased him with a small smile and he heaved a dramatic sigh, then tugged at the laces, the corset getting tighter around your body. The memory of earlier today flashed before your eyes, with his tight grip around your waist and you felt your cheeks burn, the familiar fire coming to life at your lower stomach.
âYouâre killing me, you know that?â he murmured, dipping his head to press a kiss on the crook of your neck and your eyes fluttered close for a moment before you tried to see through the haze of desire, willing yourself to turn around to look up at him.
âI owe Gordon,â you said, playing with the lapels of his jacket. âFor coming to my auntâs ball. Besides, is he not your hero in art?â
âHe is,â he said, one hand playing with the front ribbon of your corset absentmindedly and you entwined your fingers with his. He raised your hand to press a kiss on the back of it, making your stomach do a pleasant flip.
âWhat if his painting tonight is a masterpiece and you miss it?â you taunted him and he scoffed.
âI have the most beautiful masterpiece in front of me right now,â he said. âIâm not interested in anything else.â
A fire swept over your cheeks and stood on your tiptoes to brush your lips against his.
âYou remember what you said about me being the death of you?â you asked. âNow to think of it, I think we might have gotten it backwards.â
                                             *
There was no wonder why everyone in the ton was competing rather ruthlessly for the invitations for Gordonâs gala, because as far as you could tell, the guests only consisted of his very close friends. When you and Benedict walked in, you couldnât help but notice that you had seen most of these people at the parties Benedict had taken you to, which meant the majority of them were artists.
Not that you had any chance to talk to them. Ever since the beginning of the gala, while waiting for Gordon to unveil the painting in the middle of the room, you and Benedict had been inseparable. Perhaps it was good that only a handful of people who were more open about public displays of affection were here with you because if it were any other ball or social outing, you were certain you would have been criticized and made to Lady Whistledownâs newest edition about your lack of decorum, and yet you couldnât find it in you to care.
This daze you found yourself in his presence didnât seem to be going away, and thankfully he seemed to have the exact same issue.
âWhat happens though?â you asked, comfortable in Benedictâs arms while he nuzzled into your hair, his fingertips running up and down your spine while you looked at the paintings on the walls. âThereâs the gala, and then they put the painting in a museum straightaway?â
âIn Gordonâs case yes,â he said, âItâs already sold Iâm guessing.â
âThe painting tonight?â
âMm hm.â
âBut itâs the gala.â
âBuyers see it before the ton,â he said with a smile. âAnd considering how famous he is, Iâm willing to bet multiple museums and collectors climbed all over each other to get it, it mustâve been sold within minutes.â Â
You let out a breath and looked up at him.
âAnd are you excited to see it?â you asked. âThe painting?â
âIf you asked me before yesterday, I would have been,â he admitted. âNow, I donât care much about it.â
âYouâre an artist!â
âIâm a husband as well, and that side of me weighs much more at the moment,â he said and looked around. âYou know, Iâm quite certain Gordon has guest rooms.â
You tried to contain your laughter. âShh!â
âNo Iâm serious, because thereâs still time untilââ
âDid you two not come here from the same house?â Henryâs voice cut him off, making you and Benedict turn your heads and then Benedict buried his nose to the top of your hair, his arms wrapped around your waist as if you two were alone. âWas there some sort of war and you just got back while I wasnât looking?â
âHello Henry.â
âY/N,â he greeted you back with a teasing smile while Benedict rested his chin on top of your head. âIâm terribly sorry to interrupt this, but I need to borrow him for a moment. Ben, Mr. Allingham is here.â
âHm?â Benedict asked after a moment as if he was having a hard time focusing just like you and Henry blinked a couple of times.
âMr. Allingham?â he repeated. âOne of the directors of the Academy? Are youâis he alright?â
You bit back a smile and shrugged your shoulders. âOh Iâd say heâs more than alright.â
âCome on, Iâll introduce you,â Henry said, grabbing him by the arm to pull him away from you gently and you covered your lips to hide your grin.
âHenry, I wasââ
âWith your wife yes, sheâll be there after youâre done talking to Allingham. Artists in love, honestlyâŚâ Henry said as they both walked to the other side of the gallery and you looked around, then caught the side of Margery and Lucy. You took a glass of champagne from the footman, then approached them.
âOh hello Y/N!â
âHello,â you smiled at them. âUmâterribly sorry to interrupt but I just wanted to thank you, Margery.â
She raised her brows and gave you a small smile. âThe surprise?â
âYes.â
âDonât mention it,â she said with a wink while Lucy looked between you two.
âWhat surprise?â
âBenedict had a surprise for Y/N, I happened to know a person who could help,â she said airily. âIâm glad you liked it. Consider it my apology for all those stupid rumors about him and me.â
âItâs beyond me how anyone could ever believe those.â Lucy commented and you shifted your weight, nodding fervently.
âI know,â you said with a scoff, waving a hand in the air. âComplete nonsense, I doubt anyone actually believed it.â
âLadies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention,â you heard Gordonâs voice and the chatter of the crowd ceased immediately. You saw him making his way to the covered painting in the middle of the gallery and everyone followed him.
âLetâs see the painting first and then I have so much to tell you,â Margery said, squeezing your hand before Lucy winked at you and pulled her towards the rest of the crowd. You felt someone touching the small of your back and Benedict pressed a kiss on your temple.
âCome on,â he said, gently leading you closer to the painting and you entwined your fingers with his, leaning your head to his arm when you came to a stop. Gordon smiled at you two, then cleared his throat and turned to the guests.
âIâve always thought a painting should speak for itself rather than the artist speaking for it,â he said. âBut I feel confident in saying that love continues to inspire each and every one of us, may it be our actions or art. Therefore, Iâm glad to share The Artist and the Muse with you.â
With that, he pulled the cover off of the painting and the crowd gasped, a round of applause rising soon after. You tilted your head and stepped closer to the painting, a slight frown furrowing your brows.
There was no wonder Gordon was a living legend in the art world, it was such a beautiful painting that it almost took you by surprise. The two figures in the garden under the moonlight seemed to be in an embrace, their faces hidden but you didnât even need to see their faces to know that they were in love. You had no idea how Gordon had managed to depict it, but anyone who so much as laid eyes on the painting would be able to tell this was some sort of an escapade from the crowd, as if those figures were the only lovers left in the world.
âHow did heâŚ?â Benedict breathed out and you looked up at him.
âHe really is insanely talented,â you commented. âI mean I feel as if theyâre familiar, I donât get that feeling from many paintings.â
Benedict turned to look at you better as if trying to see whether you were jesting.
âI mean Iâd assume so,â he said. âConsidering weâre looking at ourselves.â
Your head shot up. âWhat?â
âColeshill Ball,â Benedict said, motioning at the painting. âThatâs the garden, thatâsâŚthatâs the gown you were wearing. We stepped outside for a moment, remember? Danced in the garden?â
Your jaw dropped as the memory flashed through your mind. Benedict was right, it was all familiar; the garden, the gown, the scenery itself. That was the night where you had apologized to Benedict and you two had danced in the garden, with him holding you close, away from the ton and their nonsense almost like a shelter.
Gordon had told you, way before tonight.
The storm and the shelter werenât separate things as it turned out.
âWell you two look rather shocked,â Gordonâs voice snapped you out of it and Benedict let out a laugh.
âGordon, is thatâŚâ
âYou, yes,â he said. âNot to worry, I will never tell people itâs you. I just happened to be looking out of the window, desperate to get away from the ton and all that chatter and I saw you two dancing andâŚwell, Iâm sure you donât need me to tell you how inspiration works Ben. Y/N, I hope you donât mind?â
You shook your head fervently.
âNo,â you said. âGod no, not at all. IâŚI donât know what to say, Gordon. It's an honor.â
Gordon bowed his head.
âItâs not the last painting that will have you as its subject Iâm sure,â he smiled, nodding in Benedictâs direction. âIâd better go and say hello to Allingham, if youâll excuse me. Enjoy the gala.â
With that, he walked away from you and Benedict exhaled, still in disbelief. You stepped into his embrace, keeping your eyes on the painting and he dipped his head to kiss the top of your hair.
âYou know, Gordon is a legend,â he muttered. âWhich means this painting will be gazed upon for centuries.â
âSo will yours Ben,â you said as you rested your head on his arm, heaving a sigh. âAnd I donât know. I still like your paintings better.â

You woke up quite early, still feeling giddy after last night. It seemed to be one of those days where you just knew it would go well even from the beginning of it, which was quite surprising because it was becoming more and more of a usual mood for you, contrary to how you used to wake up before.

When you went to bed that night, right before falling asleep you decided that this whole feelings nonsense was probably like some sort of fever; you would sleep it off and it would simply go away.
Except that it didnât.
So the next morning you just figured it would probably take a couple of days to go away, just like any flu. It surely was as annoying as the flu, but you were sure you were going to be able to think straight in a couple of days.

You still hadnât quite gotten used to your new home. Especially at night it was very hard to actually tell where you were but after a couple of minutes and occasional stumbles in the dark, you had finally reached the completely empty kitchen. Finding the ingredients that you wanted was another challenge you hadnât considered, yet after snooping around and opening quite literally every cabinet, you managed to find them and get to work.
The middle of the night was not the ideal time to bake cookies but it was the better alternative to tossing and turning in the bed.

Y/nâs eyes flew open, pushing up on her elbow and feeling a stab of pain through her abdomen.
âI wouldnât do that if I were you.â
Blinking until her vision was clear, Y/n looked across to room to see Marlene leant up against the wall.
âWe gave you a shot for your ribs,â she continued, âBut itâs not magic.â
âYeah, well, maybe you shouldâve put out a PSA,â Y/n replied groggily, the force of the flash bomb coming back to her.
Marlene smiled thinly, âCouldâve found a phone along the way.â
Y/n bristled at the joke, relieved to see her comrade alive.
âGotta admit,â Marlene crossed her arms, âI didnât expect to see you all in one piece. Figured youâd either run into raiders or you and Joel would go the double-homicide route.â
Y/n held her belly as she attempted to sit up. âAlmost did,â she groaned, âA few times.â
âWell,â Marlene gestured to Y/n, watching her with honest eyes, âI underestimated you. You did good.â
Y/n wanted to accept the praise, having finally proven herself as a fighter, but was single-minded in her thoughts. âWhereâs Joel?â
âRecovering in another room,â Marlene answered, âHis vitals are good, just hasnât woken up yet.â
Nodding, Y/n carefully swung her legs over the side of the bed, âWhen he wakes up, tell him to come find me? Ellieâs probably worried sickâŚâ
âWhere are you going?â Marlene asked.
Y/n stopped to take a breath, whatever medicine theyâd given her hadnât kicked in yet. âTo see Ellie,â she answered plainly, âSheâs okay, right?â
Marlene sighed with dread, knowing whatever was about to happen wouldnât be pleasant. But she also had a one-track mind, and it was humming a different tune than Y/nâs.
âSheâs fine,â she replied, her tone having shifted to instill a false calm, âSheâs being prepped for surgery.â
Y/nâs brow furrowed in confusion, âSurgery? I thought they were just taking her blood?â
âItâsâŚâ Marlene said with a heaviness to her tone, âA little more complicated than that.â
Even though the ache in Y/nâs temples was dizzying, it didnât take her long to connect the dots as to why it would require surgery to facilitate the vaccine.
And she felt the floor go out from under her when she did.
She looked up to Marlene, barely able to even shake her head, âNoâŚâ
Marlene bit her lip, turning her gaze from Y/n and to the floor.
âNoâŚâ Y/n repeated, her voice low, âN-noâŚyou wouldnât.â
Marleneâs painful silence sliced through her.
âAre you kidding me?â Y/nâs volume grew loud with anger, giving her the strength to stand, âYou made me risk my life for that girl for three fucking months just so you can kill her?!â
âShe wouldnât have come here with anyone other than you,â Marlene replied calmly, âShe trusts you.â
âSo you used me,â Y/nâs eyes widened with rage, âYou knew I cared about her, you knew Iâd do it.â
âYouâre not looking at the big picture,â Marlene interjected, taking a step forward but not moving any closer to Y/n, âWe get the vaccince, we save millions. We save the millions to come. We can bring the world back to what-â
The rest of Marleneâs words died to the ringing in Y/nâs ears. She braced one of her hands against her bed, feeling as if her knees were going to buckle.
Throughout her time in the Fireflies, Marlene had never entrusted Y/n with as much information as other recruits. It wasnât for doubt of Y/nâs interests, but rather Marlene thinking Y/n was incapable of handling it. Sheâd always been slow to pull the trigger, something that had in any other world would have made her merciful. Marlene had only ever seen it as weakness.
Marleneâs opinion of Y/n wasnât lost on her, she felt it on a daily basis. But to make her travel from one side of the country to another, witholding the sickening truth of what she was doing from her, that was a new brand of cruel.
âSheâs going to fix everything,â were the first words of Marleneâs that broke through Y/nâs spinning thoughts.
Her head shot up, staring daggers at Marlene, âYou donât get to make that decision for her.â
âAnd you do?â Marlene replied, âWhat gives you the right to choose her fate?â
âDid you ask her?â Y/n inquired, the building rage beginning to seep out of her, âNo, yâknow what? I can tell by your face that you didnât.â
âShe doesnât know,â Marlene could feel control over the conversation slipping, she needed to deescalate it quickly, âSheâs not going to feel anything.â
âYOUâRE KILLING,â Y/n yelled as loud as her lungs would let her, âA FUCKING CHILD!â
At the last word, two guards stationed outside Y/nâs door marched in, their rifles cocked downards, but ready to strike.
Y/n was quickly starting to understand the gravity of her situation.
Marlene held out a hand to Y/n, as if trying to ease a carnivorous animal. âDo you think I want to do this? Do you not think that Iâve looked for any other option-â
âNo,â Y/n shook her head, âI donât think you have.â
âI knew her mother, Y/n,â Marlene spoke a little louder, âI was there when she was born, and I had to put a bullet in my best friendâs head because she was infected. I promised to keep her child safe. I do not want to do this,â she paused, collecting herself, âBut itâs my only choice.â
Three months prior, hearing such a personal story would have meant something to Y/n. Now, it only served to illuminate the true colors of her comrade. Marlene, so blinded by her determination to restore the earth, had allowed her drive to turn to ruthlessness and morph into heartlessness.
âNo,â Y/n said, fighting back tears at the thought of Ellie lying unconscious somehwere in the hospital, âLook me in the eye and tell me her mother would want this,â she waited, until impatience won out, âLOOK AT ME!â
Marlene was a lot of things, blunt was one of them. She looked up to Y/nâs red face, unaware of the storm her words were about to trigger, âYouâre not her mother.â
The waves in Y/nâs body both crashed and fell at the statement. It was twenty years all over again.
âTake me to Joel,â she swallowed her tears, âI want to see Joel.â When Marlene averted her gaze once again, Y/n could feel some other essential piece of truth shift into darkness. âMarlene,â she gritted out, âWhereâs Joel?â
âHeâs gone,â Marlene answered, âHe left as soon as he knew that you and Ellie were okay.â
Y/n lip quivered with fury, the lies were so clear now. Joel and her hadnât gone through all they had, made the promises they did only for him to abandon her and Ellie. âNo. He wouldnât do that.â
âI donât know what you want to hear,â Marlene said, âBut heâs gone.â
It was then that Y/n realized she was no longer a Firefly, but a prisoner.
With the last shred of her future slipping being ripped away from her, Y/nâs fury took over. She lunged towards Marlene, one of the soldiers surging forward and shoving her back onto the bed. Y/n cried out in pain, clutching her stomach as the barrel of the rifle was drawn on her.
âDonât,â Marlene ordered the guard, âSheâs already hurt.â
Y/n could no longer hold in her sobs. Ellie had been fooled into dying for a solution they didnât even know was guaranteed, Joel was being forced to leave them behind, and she was essentially being held hostage by those sheâd once trusted with her life.
âYou keep her here,â Marlene continued speaking to the guards as if the pain was too incapacitating for Y/n to have any presence of mind, âLock the doors. Donât let her out until she calms down.â
Still weeping from both the ache in her ribs and the turn of events, Y/n nearly didnât open her eyes when she heard Marleneâs boot steps come towards her.
âI know you care about her,â Marlene said softly, âShe cares about you too. But thereâs such a thing as caring too muchâŚand Iâm sorry.â
Through her tears, Y/n watched as her one-time friend walked out the door, washing her hands of the matter.
âYou motherfucker,â Y/n growled, getting her feet as the guards exited the room, âYou fucking murderer!â
As the door shut and locked on her, Y/n began to bang her fists against the 8x10 pane of glass, âYOU FUCKING MURDERER! YOU MOTHERFUCKING MURDERER!â
Y/n screamed at the top of her lungs, hot tears pouring down her face as three months of love and care wilted at her feet.
âââââââââ
In reality, Joel was on the next floor down, fighting for his, Y/n and Ellieâs futures. He knew that the love of his life would never roll over and allow them to take Ellieâs life.
âWhereâs Y/n?â
Marlene sighed at the question, contrary to what she was sure her reputation was, deception didnât come easily to her. But she did what she had to for her cause.
There had always been a fire in Y/n, however tamed it was by her more virtuous qualities. Marlene had kept a careful eye on the blaze, never thinking it would spread too far. But thereâd been a change in Y/n since theyâd last seen each other in Boston, and she was certain her love for Ellie and time spent with Joel had brought it out in her. If they had survived three months in the ruins of civilization, they were dangerous. They needed to be kept apart if the surgery was to be a success.
âSheâs decided to stay,â Marlene locked in her story, âShe wants to see this through all the way.â
Joel didnât believe for 1/8th of a second that Y/n would have lied to him. Heâd looked in her eyes and watched twenty years of history dance across her irises. He could feel the weight of their future inside his chest, glowing gold with hope. There was no way after all theyâd been through that she would walk away from him, just like thatâŚ
âNo, you take me to âem,â he demanded, rising from the bed, âYou take me to âem right now!â
One of Marleneâs guards came forward and used the butt of his rifle to knock him to the ground. Joel grunted and coughed on his hands and knees, his mind spinning with fear.
âPlease,â he begged of Marlene, âYou donât understand.â
âI do,â Marlene said solemnly, reciting a less emotional variation of the story sheâd told Y/n five minutes prior, âI was there when she was born, Joel. I promised her mom that I would save her child, I promised,â she paused to swallow back the lump rising in her throat, âSo I do understand. Iâm the only one who understands. Iâm sorry,â she shook her head, âI have no other choice.â
Joel was a lot of things, but a coward wasnât one of them. He glared up at Marlene, subtly threatening, âI do.â
Marlene looked exasperated, like his fight was some obstacle in her path to roll her eyes at. âWalk him out to the highway,â she ordered the soldiers, âLeave him there with his pack. Give him this,â she unclipped Ellieâs pocketknife from her belt, turning her stare to Joel, âHe tries anythingâŚshoot him.â
Joel, dazed from the knowledge that Ellie and Y/n were being held somewhere, was forced to his feet. The soldiers pushed him out of the room, picking his backpack up on the way out, and shoved him down the hall.
All the while, Joel was carefully constructing his plan.
âââââââââ
Y/n sat with her back to the door, twisting her arm to hit the wood with what little energy she had left. She had sobbed and screamed to be let out until her voice was rendered raw.
She had failed. Failed Ellie. Failed Joel. Failed herself.
She wondered if this was her punishment for what sheâd done to her family. If for each life sheâd taken, sheâd lose somebody in return.
She thought of Sarah, her death that seemed to be written in some fucked up universeâs stars, and how she ached for the future sheâd never live. The proms, the graduations, coming home from college during holidays, getting engaged, getting married, having kidsâŚall of it. Or none of it. Her choices would have determined her story and whichever path sheâd have chosen, it would have been beautiful.
Ellie had been deprived of so many choices in life, and now she was being deprived of choosing whether she lived or died.
By deciding to let Ellie give her life for a cause that wasnât even hers, the Fireflies were no better than FEDRA. Marlene was making the same calls that the government had made in the first few days of the outbreak. Who got to go to the QZs and who died in a ditch on the side of a road, whose life had lasting value and who was disposable. It sickened Y/nâs stomach and made her wish she had never joined at all.
Since meeting Ellie, Y/n had often contemplated the ghost of the girlâs mother. Having filled the role herself and feeling like Sarah had been carved from her own ribs, she couldnât imagine what it was like to carry a child, birth her, and then lose her somewhere along the wayâŚnow, all she could think of was what Ellieâs mother would do if she were trapped as Y/n was. Would she fight? Would she break the glass with her fist and take on the guards? Or was she just cruel enough to sacrifice her daughter for the greater good? Could Y/n have left Sarah to die if, in some way, sheâd held the key to the planetâs salvation?
Y/n took a deep breath, her mind the clearest it had been since waking up.
No parent would let their child die, no matter the circumstances.
And neither could she.
âââââââââ
Joel paused in front of the hospital directory, eyes scanning over the levels and their corresponding departments. He was two floors away from pediatric surgery, and unknowingly, one floor away from where Y/n was being held.
âI didnât hear anyone say âstop,ââ one of the Fireflies behind him growled.
Joel glanced down the hall, âWhich way?â
âDown the stairs,â the soldier answered, shoving Joel towards the stairwell.
With each flight Joel marched down, he was completing calculations in his mind. How quick did he have to move to take out both guardsmen? Which gun would be easier to reach? Did he rescue Ellie first or find Y/n and gain an extra pair of hands?
Once he decided, he let his steps slow until he came to a complete stop.
âThe fuck are you doinâ? Keep walking.â
Joel ignored the command.
âI said,â the Firefly grabbed Joelâs shoulder, âKeep walkinâ-â
Lightning fast, Joel spun around, elbowing the man in the neck and knocking him to the floor. He nabbed his rifle as he fell, spinning around to shoot the second guard before he could even aim. Taking two steps back, he fired one shot into the first manâs leg.
âFuck,â the soldier whimpered.
âWhere are they?â Joel asked, his finger perfectly still against the trigger.
âFuck you,â the Firefly growled.
Joel didnât need his answer. Billâs written words were etched in the caverns of his mind, about finding that one person to save. In Joelâs case, there were two people worth saving-
âI donât have time for this,â he decided before planting a bullet in the manâs neck.
And he was doing it by any means necessary.
âââââââââ
Y/n fiddled with her pocketknife in her hand, pacing the room as the pain in her ribs disappeared under the blanket of whatever medication Marlene had given her. She needed the guards outside her room to get pulled away so that she could pick the doorâs lock. Once out, she had to steal a gun, find where Ellie was being held, figure out if Joel was still in the building and get them the hell out of dodge.
All she needed was a chance.
âShots fired! Shots fired!â
The buzz of a radio caught Y/nâs ear, it pulled her to the door and she peered out the glass pane. The pencil stiff stance the soldiers had been maintaining was suddenly sharp with worry. One guard came running down the hall, shouting something Y/n couldnât make out. Whatever it was caused her captors to charge down the hall as well. It was a threat that required every hand on deck.
Y/n nearly smiled, knowing exactly who could cause that kind of panic.
Slipping her blade into the lock, she fiddled with it until the door opened, freeing her. She threw her backpack over her shoulder, her eye catching on a tray balanced on the bedside table. It contained the used needle theyâd already injected her with, plus one full syringe. Y/n picked up the two vials near the needles, one labeled âibuprofenâ and one labeled âepinephrine.â
Y/n was weak, her bodyâs strength drained from trying to heal her ribs. There wasnât any way she could fight her way out in her current state.
Without hesitation, she squeezed the flesh of her thigh and stabbed the needle through her jeans, discarding it on the floor after.
Drawing a deep breath, Y/n poked her head out the door, looking down each side of the hall before cutting across to the nurseâs station. She scanned the length of the counters for anything she could use as a weapon, finding only old papers and equipment. Distantly below her, she could hear gunfire.
âHey,â a gruff voice shouted.
Y/n spun around, barely dropping to the floor before the Firefly soldier fired two shots at her. Crouched on the tile, she could feel the epinephrine beginning to kick in, bringing back the strength sheâd lost in Silver Lake. She withdrew her knife once again, hiding behind the nurseâs station and listening to the footsteps of the Firefly come closer.
Y/n knew that to save what she loved, she would have to leave whatever was left of her humanity. The part of her that had hesitated to kill had to die by her own hands.
The soldier moved closer.
CloserâŚ
The second his boot became visible, Y/n stabbed the knife through his foot, punching him in the chin when he bent down in pain. She got to her feet and ripped the rifle out of the Fireflyâs hands, shooting him in the stomach after.
She stepped over his body, leaving him to bleed out.
âââââââââ
Joelâs steps were inhumanly silent as he crept through the hospital. He fired each shot with machine-like precision, each Firefly falling to the floor, never to pick themselves back up.
Joel had killed countless times since the outbreak of Cordyceps and had felt a healthy dose of remorse. The innocent people heâd killed in his days as a Raider haunted him, much like they did Tommy, and he wasnât sure heâd ever forget Y/nâs eyes as sheâd watched him murder the FEDRA guard in Boston.
But as Joel stealthily made his way through the hospital, firing each bullet for the love of his life and the child they loved more than anything, he felt nothing.
âââââââââ
Y/n had tried so hard to live as peacefully as the world would allow her. Despite joining the Fireflies, she never volunteered for first line of defense. If bombs were planted in the city, Y/n was the one counting them, not detonating them. As much as sheâd hidden initially from Joel with bloody threats, sheâd never committed any acts of violence unless they were absolutely necessary.
Marching down the hospital halls, tears pooled in her eyes with each kill she made until she was sobbing. Flashes of her parents, her siblings, her nephew, Sarah, played in her mind. Their innocence and their gruesome deaths sheâd forever feel responsible for. Saving Ellie wouldnât bring them back, but she couldnât let another person she cared for die.
Red cheeked and puffy eyed, she murdered without hesitation, allowing love to turn her into a necessary monster.
âââââââââ
Joel went from victim to victim, playing God and delivering their vicious, premature fates. Each time he ran out of ammo, heâd pick up the rifle of his last kill. It all flowed so sickeningly perfect.
He climbed the fourth floor stairwell, shooting the Fireflies attempting to sneak up on him before they knew what was going on. With his better ear, he could hear the gunfire on the floor he was approaching.
He wasnât the only one putting up a fight.
As soon as Joel stepped onto the fifth floor, a barrage of bullets rained down around him. He ducked behind a wall, waiting for them to slow before running across to the other side of the hall. He let his ammo fly freely, taking down the Fireflies as sloppily as he needed to.
Just as he aimed at the final one, the soldier was kicked to the floor, Y/n stepping on his back and making a fatal shot.
Through his necessary numbness, Joel felt a rush of relief.
Y/n ignored every instinct she had to run into Joelâs arms and instead bent down, picking up the soldierâs rifle and the extra ammo off his belt. Joel did the same with a nearby body.
The two lovers met in the middle of the hall, their weapons resting against their chests, separating their bodies.
Twenty years ago, they were somewhere in a downtown bar, Joel trying to make her laugh and Y/n trying to pretend like she was perfectly capable of taking her eyes off of him. They were warm, they were happy, they were them.
Two decades later, they were stood in an abandoned hospital, rifles on their shoulders, blood on their clothes and vengeance in their eyes. They were bruised, they were broken, they were survivors.
They carried on the same way, shooting anyone who dared to get in their way as they climbed the building. Joel made the more gruesome kills, trying to spare Y/n what little pain he could, but Y/n was fearsome in her own right. The adrenaline from the epinephrine had heightened her senses, making her hyperaware of everything around her. If a Firefly so much as stepped an inch out from behind a wall, Y/nâs rifle was trained on him, not letting him live more than half a second.
Eventually, they made it.
The sixth floor.
With their sin all over them, Joel and Y/n walked down the hallway, passing the walls decorated with animal murals and creating a gruesome contrast. The glowing door at the end of the hall acted as their guiding light, the homing beacon theyâd chased through the bloody battlefield theyâd created.
Joel pushed the door open and they walked in, a window giving them a view into the operating room. Ellie was laid out on a table, a nurse was holding a gas mask to her face, drawing her into unconsciousness.
They were nearly too late.
Y/n, with adrenaline pumping through her veins, broke away from Joel and burst through the second set of doors. The doctor and nurses gasped in horror, jumping at the sudden sight.
âUnhook her,â Y/n growled, âNow.â
The doctor took a step towards Y/n, âHow did you get in here?â
Joel was close behind her, Y/nâs speed drawing him out of his daze. âUnhook her,â he echoed.
The doctor nervously reached for a scalpel, holding it up to Joel and Y/n with shaking hands. âI wonât let you take her.â
Heâd taken one step towards Y/n before Joel shot him, beating the epinephrine to protect her.
The nurses screamed and covered their ears, Y/n took it as her opportunity to move in on them.
âUn,â she enunciated, backing the women up towards Ellieâs bed, âHookâŚherâŚnow.â
âMove!â Joel shouted, keeping his gun drawn on them.
The nurses stepped to, unhooking Ellieâs various monitors and taking out her IV, a small stream of blood escaping the leftover hole. Joel couldnât stand the sight of her bleeding.
âCover her arm,â he ordered once again, âFast.â
They obeyed and taped a piece of gauze to Ellieâs arm.
âTurn around,â Joel said as Y/n came back to stand beside him.
The nurses, shaking and whimpering in fear for their lives, did as they were told and turned their backs. Y/n kept her gun trained on them while Joel moved to Ellie, cupping the back of her neck and sitting her up. With the reassurance of her shallow breaths against his neck, his worst fear stayed buried twenty years in the past. He lifted Ellie into his arms delicately, his brutality melting to tenderness as soon as heâd touched her.
As Joel carried Ellie out of the room, Y/n stayed on his six and kept her gun aimed. She didnât spare a glance at the doctor or the operating table as she left, unable to look at even one reminder of what could have been.
Joel and Y/n made it back down the hall, walking with the speed of criminals but the exhaustion of two people who had just laid waste to the world. Y/n tapped the elevator call button rapidly, the true effect of the epinephrine was starting to hit. She stumbled into the car behind Joel, smacking the button for the parking garage and leaned up against the wall. Her heart was slamming against her chest, sweat was pooling at her temples, her body was buzzing.
Joel peered over at her, concerned, and received a passive shake of the head.
âIs she okay?â Y/n whispered in between panting breaths.
âYeah,â Joel mumbled, staring down at Ellie. The reality of the decision theyâd made was beginning to hit them both.
They were dooming the world to save theirs.
The elevator gave them little time to think, dinging as it hit the bottom floor and opening its doors. Y/n stepped out ahead of Joel, her rifle pointed towards any threats lurking in the shadows. Joel spotted a parked and running car, the two of them made a beeline for the vehicle.
âYou canât keep her safe forever.â
Y/n spun around, Marlene stepped out from the darkness with her handgun drawn. Y/n didnât hesitate to keep her rifle raised.
âNo matter how hard you two try,â Marlene took slow, steady steps towards them, âNo matter how many people you kill, sheâs gonna grow up. And then youâll die, sheâll leave. Then what? How long till sheâs torn apart by Infected or murdered by raiders? Because she lives in a broken world that you could have saved.â
There was truth to what Marlene was saying, neither Joel nor Y/n could deny that.
âMaybe,â Joel answered, âBut it isnât for you to decide.â
âOr you two,â Marlene replied, her eyes flicking to Ellie, âSo what would she decide, huh? âCause I think sheâd wanna do whatâs right.â
Y/n nearly flinched, torn between Ellieâs fierce desire to protect and the plans she had for her future.
âAnd you know it,â Marleneâs gaze fell on Y/n, seeing the unsureness from her comrade. She slowly lowered her gun, âItâs not too late. Even now, even after what you twoâve doneâŚwe can still find a way.â
Y/n and Joel had lost everything to Cordyceps, one way or another. Theyâd lost their daughter, Y/n had lost her future with Joel and Tommy, her family, Joel had eventually lost Tommy, Tess, Bill and FrankâŚCordyceps had taken anything and everything meaningful in their lives. They should have been first in line for advocating for a cure, and they would have beenâŚ
But nothing, not even the salvation of the world, was worth losing Ellie.
And that was what made it so easy for Y/n to shoot Marlene in the gut.
As soon as her former friend dropped to the floor, Y/nâs gun fell from her hands and her knees began to wobble. The room was spinning and her heartbeat was ramping up even further. The epinephrine was backfiring.
âNo, no, no,â Joel mumbled, spinning around to put his back to Y/n as she fell forward, âHold onto me.â
Y/n weakly reached around Joelâs neck and looped her arms around him.
Joel strained under the combination of Y/n and Ellieâs body weight, but his determination surpassed his bodyâs abilities. Carrying one and dragging the other, he fought his way to the truck. He shuffled Ellie in his arms to reach for the door, sliding her carefully into the backseat, before handling Y/n.
âWhatâs wrong?â Joel asked, twisting his body to take her into his arms, âWhatâs happening?â
Y/n, beginning to lose her grip on consciousness, shook her head once again and let her head loll against Joelâs shoulder.
âHang on, hang on, honey,â Joel hurried, growing panicked that her injury had finally gotten to her and torn an organ, âJust hang on for me.â
Joel blindly reached for the passenger side door, he lifted Y/n with a grunt and placed her carefully in the seat. Brushing his hand against her cheek, he wiped the sweat off her skin.
âRose,â Joel called in a rush as Y/nâs eyes began to flutter shut, slapping her face a few times, âRose, honey, come on. Stay with me.â
A groan from behind them drew Joelâs attention and got Y/n to open her eyes. The two of them shared a knowing look, Joel swallowing harshly before dragging his fingers down Y/nâs perspiring cheek and unholstering his gun.
Y/nâs gaze followed him as he walked away from her, through the haze of the drugs, she felt some semblance of guilt. Not enough to make her call Joelâs name and ask he show mercy towards Marlene, but some little inkling of guilt that stood the chance at gnawing at her conscience if she ever came back to lucidity.
In the seconds before the bullet released from its chamber, Y/n memorialized her time with the Fireflies. She grieved their attempts to save Boston in the dark of night. The kids theyâd lost in the fight, so eager to help, like Riley. All the battles that had seemed like part of something grander that now felt meaningless, now having seen the end goal. If death only bred death, and violence only bred violence, then perhaps there was truth to the old sayingâŚthe road to hell was paved with good intentions.
She tried, she thought, as a few tears escaped her eyes, sheâd tried so hard to make a differenceâŚ
It had just been with the wrong people.
Joel fired one shot
Y/n was freed.
Joel hurried back to the truck and to Y/nâs side, her eyes were now shut and her pulse was slapping against her neck.
âHoney, come on,â Joel said softly, trying to calm both of them down, âI need you to take some deep breaths. Nice and slow.â
âDrive,â Y/n breathed, her heart practically beating out of her chest. Regardless of whether the epinephrine was going to kill her or not, they needed to escape.
Joel hesitated before pressing a kiss to Y/nâs forehead and shutting her door. He ran around the car, slamming its hood down and jumping in the driverâs seat. The keys were still in the ignition, there was nearly a full tank of gas. They were going to make it.
Joel looked over to Y/n, who had gone limp in her seat.
âRose,â Joel practically shouted, reaching over to feel his loveâs wrist, still feeling her pulse working overtime, âHoney, câmon, wake up.â
âDrive, Joel,â Y/n slurred, her head slumped against her seat.
Joel did as requested and put the truck in drive, maneuvering them through the parking garage. All the while, he kept one trembling hand on Y/nâs knee, her rifle knocking against his knuckles each time they hit a speed bump. He didnât know if by saving Ellieâs life, he was going to lose Y/nâs, and for once, Joel wanted a win. A full win. He didnât want to sacrifice one more person.
The garageâs exit lay at the end of a long stretch of tunnel, the glow of daylight approaching faster and faster as Joel drove. Their three month journey would come to a close and his sins would see sunlight. And while anyone else would have said it had all been in vain, to risk oneâs life to save humanity only to decide that humanity wasnât worth the asking price, it wasnât a waste. Not to Joel.
He glanced in the dashboard mirror, Ellieâs sleeping form in the backseat.
He looked over the glovebox, Y/nâs chest finally beginning to rise and fall at a steadier pace.
He would have done it all over again.
Every.
Single.
Part.
âââââââââ
In a puddle of her own sweat, Y/n came to a few hours later, her head leaned up against the truck window. She blinked a few times, adjusting to the sunlight, and took stock of the rapidly moving landscape. There were forest trees and mountains in the distance.
âHey,â Joel said, wrapping his hand around Y/nâs thigh.
âHey,â she mumbled back, looking over to Joel, âWhere are we?â
âJust outside of Wyoming,â he answered, rubbing his thumb across her jeans with a deep need to touch her, to assure himself she was okay. âStill a couple hours till we get to Tommyâs.â
Y/n hummed and nodded weakly, trying to look into the backseat at Ellie
âSheâs been in and out,â Joel said, keeping his eyes focused on the road, âI told her about the raiders.â
Confusedly scrunching her brows, Y/n glanced back over at Joel.
âAttackinâ the hospital,â Joel continued, his pleading eyes drifting to his partner, âAnd about the tests they ran on her.â
âYeah,â Y/n mumbled, reading Joelâs facial cues and coming to some understanding. She needed to be filled in on where she fit into the story.
Joel rubbed his hand over Y/nâs leg, âGet some sleep. Iâll wake ya when weâre close.â
There was so much she wanted to say, but her thoughts were too groggy to string more than two or three words together. With one scan of Joelâs clenched jaw and tired gaze, Y/n could tell he was feeling something similar. Thereâd be time for talking and setting their story straight, but for now, Y/n could close her eyes once more and settle into the knowledge that they were going home.
âââââââââ
The next day, the car decided it had carried them far enough and the woods of Wyoming was where theyâd part ways.
Joel examined the engine, a useless task considering they didnât have the tools to repair anything, while Ellie and Y/n sat in the car.
âWell, she got us close enough,â Joel announced, coming around to the driverâs side, âWe gotta walk the rest of the way. Probably about a five-hour hike,â he hung on the car door in front of Ellie, âBut we can manage that. Remember?â
Ellie scanned her memories, bringing up their third day together, in the Massachusetts woods. She smiled, âYeah.â
âEasy for you to say,â Y/n grunted as she used the backseat door to pull herself out of her seat, âYouâre not walking around with two cracked fuckinâ ribs and a headache the size of Texas.â
âWhat happened to you back there anyway?â Ellie finally asked, Y/n had slept nearly the whole drive thus far. This was the longest sheâd stayed awake.
âI did drugs,â Y/n replied honestly, having everything and nothing to hide.
âWeâll take it slow,â Joel promised, looping an arm around Y/nâs waist and kissing her forehead, âTake breaks.â
Y/n chuckled, âThereâs a hot shower and a bed waiting on the other side of this fucking mountain,â she pointed up at the first hill theyâd have to climb, âIf anything, weâre shaving time off this thing.â
Joel smiled at the woman, who was already pulling Ellie to her feet and marching in the direction of their starting point.
As they hiked, Y/nâs energy started to go downhill again, and the painkillers sheâd been given at the hospital had completely worn off. She leaned on Joel eventually, letting him brace some of her weight during the steeper portions.
Ellie, while concerned for Y/nâs wellbeing, was even more quiet than before theyâd reached the hospital.
âYâknow, Sarah and I used to hike like this all the time,â Joel broke the silence and looked back to Ellie.
Y/n tilted her head towards Joel in surprise. It was the first time heâd brought up his daughter on his own accordâŚever.
âI wouldnât say it was her favorite thing. She wasnât a fan of the mosquitos and such,â he continued, âBut she was a big climber orâŚscampering. Thatâs probably the right word.â
âIt is,â Y/n interjected, sharing a small smile with Joel.
âThat girlâŚâ Joel muttered, âSheâd see a big rock and justâŚâ he shot his free hand out, âPew!â
Even at the mature age of thirteen, Y/n could remember Sarah and her running Texasâ nature trails and climbing the less dangerous rocks. Joel would follow behind, laughing and telling his girlfriend that if she broke his daughter, she was buying him a new one.
âShe woulda liked you,â Joel told Ellie, it was one of the most honest things heâd ever said. âNot to say the two of you are the same. Definitely different kids.â
âHow so?â Ellie softly asked from behind Joel and Y/n.
âWell, she was a lot moreâŚâ Joel trailed off, âI wanna say girly,â he quickly turned to Ellie, âAnd Iâm not sayinâ that youâre not girly.â
âIâm not,â Ellie admitted, barely smiling up at Joel.
âYeah, youâre not. So that,â Joel chuckled, tightening his hold on Y/n a little as he listed off Sarahâs attributes, âShe was taller. She had a killer smile. Again, not sayinâ that you donât.â
Y/n shook her head, withholding a laugh for the sake of her ribs. Three months prior, theyâd all been threatening to kill each other. Now they were dancing around conversational landmines that werenât even there, so afraid of hurting one another.
âBut you know why I think sheâd like you?â Joel addressed Ellie once more.
âWhy?â
ââCause youâre funny,â Joel answered, âI think you wouldâve made her laugh.â
Y/n nodded, âShe also would have appreciated the well deserved crap you give her dad.â
Joel snorted at Y/nâs comment, knowing there was truth to it. Sarah had always enjoyed having someone to gang up on him with, but no fiercer duo had ever existed than the likes of his daughter and his girlfriend.
âAnyway,â Joel felt his emotions beginning to tighten around his throat, âI bet you wouldâve liked her back.â
âYeah,â Ellie said, still sounding distant, âBet I wouldâve.â
The weight of Sarahâs death had suffocated Joel and Y/n separately for two decades. It had been a blade, sticking out their chest, that theyâd somehow learned to live with. But there was something, between their time with Ellie and their coming back together, that had caused the pain toâŚchange. It would never hurt any less than it did now, but Sarahâs memory now seemed like one they could look back on with more than grief. There could be smiles and laughter as they thought back on their beautiful, brilliant girl.
Y/n rested her head on Joelâs shoulder as they walked, he pressed his cheek to her hair. They both felt it.
A little ways more and theyâd reached the top of the hill. In the distance, the town of Jackson stretched within its walls. It was far bigger than any of them had realized.
âThere ya go,â Joel said as they paused to take it in, âNot much further now.â
He helped Y/n on the decline with her keeping her weary eyes on what theyâd now call home. She nearly cried when she realized that theyâd never have to leave it again. The three of them could settle into life as close to what it should have been.
âHey, wait,â Ellie called, bringing Joel and Y/n to a halt. She began to form words before abandoning them, âFuckâŚâ
Joelâs muscles tightened, worried that sheâd taken the time to pick apart his lie.
âBack in Kansas City, you asked me about the first time I killed someone,â Ellie spoke to Joel.
He fidgeted a little as he held Y/n, relieved that it wasnât about the hospital.
âWhen I got bit,â Ellie continued, âI-I wasnât on my own. My best friend was there and she got bit too. We didnât know what to do, and she says, âWe can just wait it outâŚbe all poetic and just lose our minds together.ââ
Y/n bit her lip, her brief time of knowing Rileyâs spirit flashed through her mind.
âAnd then she did,â Ellie went on with her story, âAnd I had toâŚher name was Riley, and she was the first to die. And then it was Tess. And then it was Sam-â
Joel shook his head, âThatâs not on you.â
âNo,â Y/n reenforced, âNot at all.â
âI know,â Ellie sighed, âBut-â
âLook sometimes things donât work out the way we hope,â Joel said, âYou can feel likeâŚlike youâve come to an endâŚand you donât know what to do next,â he sighed, thinking back on all the choices in his life that had led him to this moment, âBut if you just keep goingâŚyou find something new to fight for.â
Y/n looked downwards, feeling every one of Joelâs words ring true in her heart.
âAnd maybe thatâs not what you want to hear-â Joel tried to continue his speech.
âSwear to me,â Ellie interrupted.
Joel and Y/n paused, holding their breaths as their tale was challenged. Y/nâs exhaustion allowed her to lower her head as she fought to take a deeper breath.
âSwear to me that everything you said about the Fireflies is true,â Ellie continued, her eyes demanding yet still soft.
Lying was an essential part of survival. It was a skill to be honed and a craft that required complete dedication. Joel had lied his way through life, into black market deals and smuggling opportunities. Y/n had lied to aid the Fireflies and to save her own life. Theyâd been comfortable saying whatever they needed to to stay alive.
That feeling died on the Wyoming hilltop.
âI swear,â Joel replied.
Y/n inhaled as deep as she could, feeling the fullness of what she was about to say wash over her and possess her body.
âI swear.â
Ellie watched them, her mind working to process what they were saying, leaving her nearly unreadable. They waited with bated breath as she decided whether to accept their answers or not.
âOkay.â
Without another word, Ellie picked up her pace, moving past Joel and Y/n to head down the hill. Joel began their descend, but Y/n pulled her arm away from him and stayed frozen.
âGive me a minute,â she said, her eyes on the mountains.
Joel inhaled to argue the point that she couldnât make it more than ten steps on her own, but the distance in her eyes advised him against it. He let her hand go and began to follow Ellie, turning back once to make sure she was okay.
Y/n let her eyes drift down to Jackson, tracing the outlines of the town and trying to find the house that would become theirs. The possibilities were overwhelming as to what they could do when they got there. If there was electricity, she could cook proper meals for Joel and Ellie. They could have game nights. Tommy could come over at random moments in the day. Ellie could attend a real school. Joel could get back to his roots and fix up the house. They could retire to their bedroom each night, calling out to Ellie to go to sleep before doing the same. It could be the domestic life sheâd always wanted, simplistic in every sense.
Except it wouldnât be real.
Y/n had seen the distrust in Ellieâs face, she knew that at some point, the girl would figure it out. And if she didnât, sheâd always be questioning if her and Joel were telling the Godâs honest truth. What their relationship had been would never again be. By saving Ellieâs life, they had forever changed the dysfunctional little found family theyâd created.
Y/n blinked once, took a deep breath, and headed down the hill, taking her first step into a life of lies.

You needed to convince everyone that you were madly in love after all.

âââââ
December, 2023. Jackson, Wyoming.
For as small of a place as the Jackson commune was, it was very easy for Joel and Y/n to avoid each other.
Soon after she returned from the bar with Tommy, Maria announced that it was the townâs movie night and she was going to take Ellie. While Y/n would have rather stayed at the house and hid herself away, she knew the best place to hide from Joel was anywhere a crowd was present.
Inside the mess hall, theyâd organized the benches to create rows of seats for the kids. Ellie was seated in the middle, looking back every once in a while to Y/n, who was stood with Maria and Tommy.
After their conversation, Tommy hadnât pressed Y/n anymore on the subject of Joel. He had observed them from the night theyâd met to the minute heâd left the triage clinic. With his birdâs-eye-view of their relationship, he could tell that the torch theyâd carried for one another burned still, purely from the passion in their voices when they spoke about each other. The way their eyes came alive when the otherâs name was mentioned.
Y/n had allowed herself to switch off, mindlessly watching the movie. The overwhelming rush of emotions sheâd felt from both the domestic beauty of Jackson and the reminder that she could never have it had exhausted her. When Ellie would look back, needing reassurance she was still there, all Y/n felt capable of was a tiny nod. There was nothing left in her to give.
At some point during the film, Tommy reached over to tap Y/n on the shoulder and nodded towards the door. With him being the only person she fully trusted, she followed him out without question.
They walked through the light snowfall in silence, Y/n was under the impression he was trying to get her some fresh air. Even the snowflakes, in all their puritan beauty, couldnât lift her mood. They just felt cold and annoying on her face.
Tommy guided them back to his and Mariaâs house, unlocking the door. âWaIt here a minute.â
Y/n nodded, if it were possible, she never wanted to step foot in the house again.
Tommy disappeared for thirty seconds before emerging with a pair of winter boots in hand. Y/n was beginning to grow curious, but not enough to break her vow of silence.
They resumed their path down the middle of town, the lights strung from rooftop to rooftop combined with the decorated pine tree gave it a true Christmas feel. Tommy led them towards a building Y/n had yet to go into, a cobblerâs workshop.
âYou pulled me out to help fix your boots?â Y/n asked as they climbed the steps.
Tommy didnât answer, only opening the door and gesturing for her to enter. Y/n walked in, her eyes trailing the walls before they fell on the center of the room.
Where Joel was sat.
Joel had done a stellar job of not just avoiding Y/n, but his brother, Maria and Ellie. After his last episode, he hadnât wanted to be around anyone. His busted boot had brought him to the workshop, heâd been pulling at the sole for nearly thirty minutes with no success. With each fruitless tug, his frustrations grew, and so did his tears. It was the meaningless failures in life that brought the deepest ones to the surface.
Y/n and Joelâs eyes met across the room, realization hitting Y/n as to why Tommy had brought her out. She turned to glare at him, seeing no remorse at all on his face.
âThe guys said I might find you here,â Tommy said, brushing past Y/n to Joel and handing him the pair of boots, âFigured Iâd save you the trouble.â
Y/n ran her palm across her forehead in both frustration and anxiety, turning on her heel and reaching for the doorknob.
âHang on,â Tommy called, stopping her from moving any further, âBefore you storm out of hereâŚâ he looked to Joel, âI shouldnât have said what I said. I donât even believe itâŚI know youâre happy for me, itâs justâŚcomplicated for you. And Iâm sorry.â
Tommy turned his gaze to Y/n, âAnd you. I wasnât tryinâ to hurt you, back at the bar, and bringinâ all that up wasnât my best move.â
Y/nâs hand hovered over the knob, debating whether to run or stay. She didnât have an explanation for the pull to remain, considering Joel was ten feet away from her, but she listened to it.
Joel didnât have to question what âall thatâ Tommy was referring to. If heâd brought it up to him him, heâd surely have brought it up with Y/n. Just knowing theyâd talked about it hurt.
âSo are you two gonna let me off the hook, or what?â Tommy asked, smiling the same way he had each time Y/n or Joel had bailed him out of jail.
Joel wished with everything in him that Y/n wasnât in the room. Not with what he was about to say.
âThis ride to the universityâŚâ he began, âIs it a suicide mission?â
Tommyâs brows lowered, âNo. Itâs dangerous, but itâs nothinâ you canât handle. Just prepare and do what you do.â
âYouâve had people go that way and come back?â Joel continued.
âAll of âem,â Tommy answered, âWhat is this?â
Joel couldnât find it in himself to meet Y/nâs eyes. He felt the absence of her gaze, but his drifted in her direction, landing near her boots.
âSheâs immune.â
Y/n instinctively tensed up, the two words theyâd all swore not to speak suddenly hanging in the air.
âWhat?â Tommy said in shock.
âEllie,â Joel replied, âShe got infected but she didnât get sick.â
Tommy flinched, naturally, making Y/n slide her body in front of the door.
âItâs true,â she said, âFireflies found her up in Boston, sheâd just been bit. We brought her in, quarantined her, tested herâŚâ Y/n couldnât bring herself to look at Joel, only at the floor under his feet, âThen it happened again. I saw it with my own two eyesâŚthat was three months ago.â
A beat of silence added to the tension of the moment.
âSheâs immune,â Joel pushed, his voice low and pleading.
Tommy looked between his brother and his almost-sister-in-law, thinking about the stark contrast between the last time it had been the three of them. He crossed the room, reluctantly coming to sit across from Joel.
Y/n, with her hands at her side and her eyes looking anywhere but at Joel, moved to where Tommy had been standing. It was too late to leave nowâŚ
âFrom the beginning,â Tommy requested of them both.
For reasons she couldnât understand, Y/nâs eyes began to water before Joel even started to speak.
âIt was Marlene,â he explained, âShe hired us to smuggle her to some Fireflies. It went bad. Tess got bit. She made me swear to take the kid. It was her dyinâ wish,â Joelâs voice wavered slightly, âWhat the hell was I supposed to do?â
Y/n sunk her teeth down into her bottom lip, that hadnât been Tessâ final request.
âWe made it as far as K.C and thenâŚâ
Joel paused, the memories of Kansas City were ones he tried not to look back on, for so many reasons.
âYou know, she saved my life there,â he continued, âFrom another kid.â He intentionally left Y/n out of the story, just addressing the memory of her almost dying overwhelmed him.
âFive years ago, I would have destroyed him,â Joel went on, âBut she had to shoot him to save me. 14 years old. Because I was too slow and too fuckinâ deaf to hear him cominâ.â
Y/n looked down at the worktable below her, her eyes misting over. It was so easy for Joel to pretend like she hadnât been there, it almost hurt.
âAnd I sawâŚâ Joel paused, Henryâs two fatal bullets ringing in his good ear, âI saw a man kill his own brother, to save her, while I just watched.â
Curling her fist against the table, Y/n bit down on her lip until she tasted blood.
âAnd today, I thought that dog was gonna tear her apart because it smelled somethinâ on her. And all I did was stand there,â Joelâs pace had quickened, âI couldnâtâŚmove. I couldnât think of anything to say. I justâŚâ
Joel, in that moment, wished for a thousand miles of space between him and Y/n. He wished she remained in Jackson and he was back in Boston.
âI was so afraid,â his voice finally cracked.
Two silent tears danced down Y/nâs cheeks like a sprinkle of rain before a thunderstorm.
âYou think I can still handle these things, butâŚâ Joelâs voice regained its strength as he watched Tommy take in what he said, âIâm not who I was. Iâm weak.â
With all the force inside her, Y/n still couldnât bear to look at Joel. She couldnât handle watching him fall apart.
âLately, there are these moments where the fear comes up outta nowhere andâŚâ Joel took a quivering breath, well aware he was addressing two people, âMy heartâŚfeels like itâs stopped.â
The long overdue explanation didnât feel like a victory to Y/n, it felt hollow. It was coming at the expense of so much.
âAnd I have dreams,â Joel went on, âEvery night.â
âWhat kinda dreams?â Tommy asked, it was the first time heâd dared to speak.
âI donât know,â Joelâs tone became breathless with emotion, âI just know that when I wake upâŚâ
Joel paused, trying to gather the strength heâd lacked twenty years ago.
âIâve lost something.â
There was no longer any story to tell.
This was Joelâs admission of guilt.
âIâm failinâ in my sleep,â Joel cried, âThatâs all I do.â
A river now streamed down Y/nâs face, they were addressing all that had happened between them without actually talking about it.
âItâs all Iâve ever done,â Joel whimpered, the faces of the three most important women in his life flashing through his mind, âIs fail her.â
Y/nâs cheeks were red from holding in her screaming sobs.
âAgain and againâŚâ Joel trailed off, feeling the weight of Y/nâs pain without seeing it.
âYou want me to take her,â Tommy stated, he knew what was coming before they got there.
Y/nâs eyes finally found the courage to fly to Joel, her lips parting in shock.
âIâm just gonna get her killed,â Joel trembled, the fears heâd had to live with the last three months were beating him into cowering, âI know it. I know it.â
Of all the things heâd said concerning the piece of his heart standing across from him, none had hurt Joel as much as the one floating on his tongue, clutching to his throatâŚbegging not to be released.
âI have to leave her.â
In that moment, Y/n was no longer in the shop. She wasnât in Jackson. Her knees were sitting in dirt, wind whipping at her shirt, her screams echoing off the triage clinic wallsâŚJoel was abandoning her all over again.
She must have gasped or sniffled, because Tommy turned around to look at her. Joelâs tearful gaze finally came up to meet hers, her heartbroken stare piercing his chest. He knew exactly what he was doing to her, the anger that had died out three months ago filling her eyes once again. Except this time, there was so much sadness behind it, Joelâs tears started up again.
Y/n couldnât stand to hear another word, her own opinion not mattering in the already-made decision. Desperate for Joel not to witness another one of her tears, she went straight for the door, throwing it open and letting it swing shut behind her.
Her mouth hung open, trying to force the winter air in and out her lungs as her head spun. He was doing it, he was leaving her as if she hadnât ever meant anything to him.
A crunch of snow under another pair of footprints drew her attention to her left. Ellie was moving so fast away from the door, Y/n barely recognized it as her.
âEllie,â Y/n called, the girl was marching back through town, âEllie!â
âSo heâs just gonna leave us here?â Ellie asked, her voice raised to compensate for the distance between them.
Y/n couldnât form an answer, she couldnât defend Joelâs actions.
âYou have to talk him out of it,â Ellie said, bitterness seeping into her tone.
âI canât,â Y/n said, letting the cold freeze what was left of her tears.
âYes, you can,â Ellie was sounding more and more like the child she should have been, on the verge of losing something important to her.
âEllie, I canât,â Y/n practically shouted, the girl was too fast for her, âI canât make him do anything, you know that.â
Ellie spun around, her face red from the cold air and her anger. âYou have to,â she yelled, âHe canâtâŚâ her voice nearly caught, âHe canât fucking do that to us.â
Y/n had concealed so much of her history from Ellie, it wasnât anything she needed to know. The girl looked at Joel like he was everything, she couldnât shatter the illusion.
With nothing but tears to give as a reply, Y/n watched Ellie storm back off through the snow. She waited, giving the girl a wide berth before heading in the same direction.
When they got inside, Ellie stomped up the stairs, leaving Y/n standing aimlessly in the middle of the living room. She felt so small, so fragile, it was a vulnerability she hadnât felt in twenty years that only came with someone owning a part of your heart. It was permission she hadnât realized sheâd given to Joel to break her all over again.
Somehow, quite blearily, Y/n made it up the stairs. She stood in the hallway, her eyes drifting between doors. Two options lay in front of her. She could a) knock on Ellieâs door and try to console her or b) go into her room and sleep off the pain till morning.
Despite the twenty years of independence sheâd had, Y/n had never felt like she had full autonomy. She was owned by her past, haunted by the choices that sheâd been forced to make and the ones that had been made for her. There was a piece of her mind beating her into submission, counting on the trauma to make her cower from facing the truth.
There was a third option, and she strode towards it without hesitation.
âââââââââ
âYouâre right. Youâre not my daughter, and I sure as hell ainât your dad.â
The words struck Ellie like a blow to the chest.
âNow, come dawn,â Joel finished, âWeâre goinâ our separate ways.â
He left her there, knowing there were tears pooling in her eyes, knowing she felt abandoned. He knew all of it, and he still slammed the door shut. He was the only one who could see that it truly was the only option where she kept her life.
Joel glanced down the hall, spotting the bathroom, a closet and a closed door, no doubt a bedroom. He didnât dare go near it, he couldnât face the demons that lay behind it. Instead, he made his way to the bedroom at the end of the hallway, nudging the door openâŚ
Y/n was sitting on the bed.
Joel froze.
Her elbows rested on her knees, her hands were clasped together. She stared ahead at the carpet, her stare boring into the beige threads with a fire that was intended for the man standing across from her.
Joel had been running from her all day, it seemed like they both had. If Y/n had thought this was her room and had been caught off guard, sheâd have jumped, rushing to leave or forcing Joel out. Her stillness told him that this was intentional.
âI want the truth,â Y/n was the first of them to speak, âAbout that day.â
Joel had made one of the biggest choices in her life for her and it had ruined the last twenty years. If this was the last time she would ever see him, she was taking what she wanted before leaving.
âI need to hear it,â she continued, her voice thick from crying. She finally dragged her gaze up to him, shooting daggers, âI need to hear you say it.â
Joelâs muscles had locked up, every inch of him suddenly running painfully cold. There was no escaping what she wanted to hear, nor did he have to strength to keep it buried any more. The words lay trapped in his chest, rotting between his lungs.
Joel reached behind him and shut the door, not wanting Ellie to hear what was surely to come. He walked towards the bed hesitantly, the first step sending Y/n across the room. Distance was necessary for such an intimate conversation.
Y/n watched him walk, his posture was more drooped than usual. Sheâd heard Ellie yelling through the walls, no doubt reading him the riot act for his plans. And whatever Joel had responded with was, undoubtably, worse.
Joel took Y/nâs spot on the edge of the bed, sighing to himself and trying gathering his mind. Were they really doing this?
He paused a good long while before beginning his confession.
âAfter itâŚâ Joel paused, unable to call on the tragedy by name, âAfter it happened, I couldnâtâŚsee. I-I couldnâtâŚbreathe. Nothinâ made sense any more,â Joelâs eyes were brave enough to look up at Y/n, âNothinâ.â
Y/n kept her arms crossed over her chest, protecting herself the last way she knew how from the ghosts of the past.
Joel clasped his hands in his lap, as if to pray for forgiveness that wasnât his to have. There was nothing that could soften the blow he was about to strike.
âSomehow, in my mind, when you told meâŚâ Joel referred to another nameless point in time, âWhat you told meâŚI knew it was true.â
There it was.
âYouâd never lied to me before,â Joel admitted, tears threatening to reveal all his cards, âYou wouldnâtâve chosen then to start.â
Heâd known. Heâd known the whole time. And heâd still tried to make her feel like a liar.
âI wasnât thinkinâ straight,â Joel struggled, his chest trembling as he tried to hold himself still, âThe pain was justâŚI couldnât handle it.â
With Ellie in the room over, Y/n bit down on her lip to stop whatever violent reaction threatened to escape her mouth.
âSo instead, you decided to blow up my life,â she said, nodding.
Joel felt breathless, staring into the same weeping eyes he had twenty years ago, watching her fall apart. Except this time, it was controlled. She wouldnât let herself break until he broke first.
Y/n couldnât hold back the river in her eyes any longer, the festering resentment building in her like a hurricane.
âDo you have any idea what I went through after you left?!â
The force of her voice startled Joel, but he didnât flinch. He deserved every bit of her hate, and he would take it all.
Y/n took a rattling breath, the volume of her tone dropping to a hiss, âDo you have any idea what I had to do?â
âââââââââ
October 1st, 2003. St. Louis, Missouri.
By some miracle, Y/n made it home.
After Joel had abandoned her and sheâd cried herself nearly into dehydration, she stood up, brushed the dirt off her kneesâŚand walked away. Her apartment complex was near the clinic and sheâd snuck back without coming across any army or Infected.
She promptly packed up her backpack, shoving as many dry goods in as she could. She filled water bottles, rolled a change of clothes, a flashlight, a blanket, and a hammer. She didnât have any intention of hurting anyone, but she was going to be prepared.
The problem was that her car was parked at Joelâs house.
Unhappily, Y/n had snuck into the neighborhood through the trees, the army was still stationed on the highway directly in front of the entrance. When she arrived, cutting through the shared lawn between the Millers and the Adlers, she kept her eyes down. She didnât think she could handle the sight. She climbed into her car, which was blissfully still there, and started it up.
It took everything in her not to look up at the house, or go inside to say a goodbye.
To avoid the army, she drove her car through the space between the houses, cutting back through the forest and getting onto a side. She couldnât save Sarah, Joel had left her for dead, but she was determined to find her family.
It had taken a full day of driving, carefully avoiding the armyâs various stations, and when her car had run out of gas, two days on foot. But sheâd made it, alive and as well as she could be.
Y/nâs parents owned a plot of land that theyâd built her childhood home on. The nearest neighbor was a mile away, giving them a decent chance at survival by isolation. Her sister lived five miles away, her brother twenty minutes, but she knew theyâd huddle together in such an emergency.
When her weak limbs and weary eyes reached the property, she huffed a tearful breath. The world may have been falling apart around her, but she was home. The sight gave her a new boost of energy and she quickened her steps across the grass.
âMom,â she called the closer she got, âDad!â
Y/n hurried up the front porch steps, finding the door slightly ajar. There had never been a moment in their house where the door hadnât been locked. Her hand hesitated over the knob, afraid of what she might find.
She didnât really have a choice.
Y/n cautiously stepped inside, âMom! Dad!â
Her voice bounced off the hallway, echoing into the house. There was no answer.
âAnnie,â she called for her sister, then her brother, âJason!â
She walked down the hallway, finding the tables and knicknacks that decorated it to be as meticulously straightened as ever. It all looked normal.
âGuys,â Y/n shouted, growing more anxious, âItâs me!â
Through the hall was the kitchen, the counters were covered in dry good wrappers and bags. Clearly they were here, the power had been cut and that would have been their only option for food.
Y/nâs breaths grew quicker, âGuys!â
There was a clatter from upstairs, Y/n spun around to face the staircase. Her worst fear was that someone had broken in, killed her family and was stealing any valuables they could. It was a miracle her apartment had been intact.
Another large thud, followed by a low growl.
She wasnât even thinking about the other possibility.
A humanistic screech sounded through the house before a blurry body threw itself down the stairs, launching itself towards Y/n.
It was her father.
âDad!â
As her fatherâs hand swung at her, she swerved out of the way, the rush of air brushing her face. She stumbled backwards into the living room, blidnly reaching for the edges of furniture to topple in her dadâs path. Undeterred, growling and snarling at his own daughter, he climbed over them effortlessly.
âDad,â Y/n yelled with tears in her eyes, âDaddy, stop! Itâs me!
A snarl and another swipe was all she received.
Until the second growl came.
From the other side of the stairs, Y/nâs mother emerged with the same possessed look in her eye as her husband.
âMama,â Y/n cried, âItâs me! Stop!â
Her mother ran down the hall, her steps wide and clunky. Y/nâs father was heading towards her too, his movements slower than his wifeâs.
There was no time to think her decision over.
Y/n reached for her grandmotherâs vase, sitting on the end table by the front door and swung it around, smashing it into her motherâs head.
Her mother let out a scream, one of anger rather than pain, and stumbled back a few steps. Y/n shoved the end table at her father, ramming it into his stomach and causing him to drop to the floor. It gave her time to cut across into the home office, sliding under her motherâs arm as it reached for her.
âMama,â Y/n cried, her tears were long past restraint, âMama, itâs meâŚplease.â
Her mother stalked forward, too far gone to recognize her daughter.
âMama,â Y/n pleaded, âPlease donât!â
Y/n was out of time and out of options.
It was either take action or become one of them.
Y/n yanked the hammer out of the open slit in her backpack and slammed it into the side of her motherâs head.
The woman dropped the floor.
Y/n could barely register what sheâd done before her fatherâs growls neared. She looked up to see him, quickly encroaching on her. She waited until her was close enough before jumping to the side, letting him slam into his bookcase and bludgeoning him with the hammer.
Y/n bolted out the glass doors, sprinting towards the stairs and screaming for her siblings, âJason! Annie!â
More growling came from one of their childhood bedrooms.
Acting purely on adrenaline, Y/n bolted in the opposite direction of the sound, heading for the master bedroom. She ran for the closet, clearing the top shelf of her fatherâs side to reach his fireproof safe. Her fingers trembled as she punched in the code, the growling getting closer to the room.
The safe door opened, offering her her fatherâs hand gun as a blood soaked salvation.
A sickeningly shriek filled the bedroom, the lean body of Jason entering and sniffing Y/n out like a hunter would its prey.
Y/n couldnât afford to think, but she felt the full weight of her decision as she took off the safety and landed a bullet in her big brotherâs head.
She stood over his lifeless body, her breath caught somewhere between her heart and her lungs. From behind her, there was more manic growling.
Y/n spun around to find not only her sister, racing towards her, but her parents dragging themselves up the last steps on the staircase.
âNo,â she whispered, âNo, Annie, stop. Please!â
Her sister screamed, her eyes completely blackened and her nostrils flared in blind rage.
Y/n fired a shot with a shaking hand, causing the the bullet to hit a decorative plate on the wall, ricocheting back across the room and hitting her in the shoulder.
She couldnât feel the pain.
She couldnât feel anything.
Because the next three shots she didnât miss.
When it was over, Y/n couldnât move. She couldnât see. She couldnât breathe. All she could do was stare at the destruction sheâd caused. And in her numbness, she didnât hear the small footsteps, the heaving breaths coming for herâŚ
Her little nephew, Matty, let out a vicious cry as he lunged for his aunt.
âMatty!â Y/n cried, the boy clinging to her leg and unhinging his jaw, âNo!â
Y/n reached down, prying him off her leg and holding him in the air, his little legs flailing and his hands clawing for Y/nâs throat.
âMatty, stop,â Y/n screamed through her tears, her pain rising to match the demonic one of her nephew.
She threw him down on the bed and bolted for the stairs, the gun still in her palm. She knew that the next thirty seconds would decide who she would be in this new world, and whether her soul would retire to heaven or hell.
Her nephew flew down the stairs after her.
Y/n stumbled on the last step, landing on her knees and sliding across the blood slicked hardwood.
Matty shrieked.
Y/n raised her gun.
âââââââââ
December 2023. Jackson, Wyoming.
The soft glow of the lamplight couldnât help the darkness that filled the bedroom.
Joelâs lips were parted, in horror and in sorrow.
The entire expanse of Y/nâs cheeks were painted with her tears. Not a day had gone by since her tragic homecoming where she wasnât haunted by her decisions. But the last three months, particularly after Henry and Samâs tragic endings, it lived at the forefront of her mind again.
âI needed you there,â Y/n whispered angrily, incapable of making any louder a sound, âI needed you there toâŚâ
To save her? To commit the atrocious sin for her? To hold her afterwards and tell her she was still a good person?
âYou left me there,â Y/n whimpered, âTo die.â
Joel felt the weight of the words, each one slicing through his heart the way he deserved. He deserved so much more.
The worst part, was that in all of Y/nâs twenty years sheâd spent wanting to hurt Joel, with the opportunity in front of her, she couldnâtâŚbecause she understood. She understood what grief that powerful could do to a person. When she had made the choice to end her familyâs lives, she lost herself. She couldnât make sense of a single part of her mind, her heart, what was left of her soulâŚand twenty years later, Joelâs delusions were perfectly clear to her.
Despite all her efforts, she couldnât hate his decision. Only the ramifications.
Joel felt like his entire body was made of led, unable to move so much as a finger. Only his eyes seemed to work properly as they rolled tears down his cheeks.
He had abandoned her in a state of unawareness and had doomed her to a life as broken as his. He had condemned her soul the minute heâd walked away from her. The reason for all her pain was him.
The emotions balled inside Y/n, gathering more and more pressure until she couldnât hold it in any longer. Screw understanding, she had to get it all out.
âShe chose me, Joel,â Y/n cried, âShe fucking chose me! And you fucking stole that from me,â she pointed at him, âYou tried to take her memory away from me like it was nothing. Why the fuck did you do that?!â
âBecause,â Joelâs body shot up off the bed, turning to face Y/n, his voice possessed a strength that only came in desparate sadness, âWe were so close! We were so damn close,â he drew a shaking breath and ran his hand through his hair.
Y/n stood as still as she could, nearly relieved that Joel was finally being honest with her, but heartbroken all the same.
Joel had kept so many secrets over the years, from Tess, from TommyâŚit was the nature of survival. Keeping your cards close to your chest. But he couldnât take the physical pain, the sick feeling in his stomach, that came with hiding one in particular.
He lowered his voice, his own pain softening the edges of his tone. âDid you know I was gonna buy you a ring? That weekend?â Joel asked, feeling stupid for posing it as question, ââCourse you didnât. Thatâs why I was workinâ all those extra shifts,â he pointed a finger in the distance between them, âI was goinâ to get it the next morningâŚâ
That was it. There was no more pain for either of them to feel. This was the great, whopping, life-stealing heartbreak that would steal the last of them.
âWe were so close,â Joel whispered, his lip quivering as he bit back his sobs, âAnd we lost it all. And I couldnât handle itâŚâ his voice cracked with his final admission, âAnd there hasnât been a day on this godforsaken planet that I havenât regretted it.â
There was ten feet and two decades of space between them, but their minds were back in Austin on that last night, before tragedy struck. The glow of the TV flickered across their eyes, the soft sounds of Sarahâs breaths against Joelâs legs filled their ears, the phantom weight of Y/nâs head on Joelâs shoulder nudged him. It was the start of the future they were never meant to have.
Y/n stopped any attempt to slow her tears, instead allowing soft sniffles to escape her. She pressed a hand to one side of her face, digging her palm into her cheek. Sarah had chosen her as her mother, Joel had chosen her as his wife. They had been on the verge ofâŚeverything sheâd ever wanted for them.
Joel watched her process his confession, still tied to her soul enough to feel the pain wash over her as if it was his own, because it was. He had felt the gaping hole of her at his side for two decades, knowing he was the one who caused the vacancy. Regardless of whether he ever saw Y/n again, he would carry that scar for the rest of his miserable lifeâŚ
Y/n fought to draw a breath deep enough to keep her from losing consciousness. She met Joelâs eyes, wet and bloodshot and with all the strength she could summon.
âWe did lose everything,â she agreed, the pressure of the lump in her throat forcing the words out of her, âBut we didnât have to lose each other.â
In the three months theyâd worked together, risking their lives for Ellie and each other, theyâd fought any and all feelings towards one another that didnât pair well with Joelâs dishonesty or Y/nâs fury. Theyâd raged just as hard against their past as they had the violence of those against them. And now, with the truth exposed and nowhere left to hideâŚthey felt it all.
Three months spent carefully considering every move they made towards one another, every word thought over with such considerationâŚtheyâd been so committed to keeping up their great divide.
There was nothing left to fight.
Only to feel.
Beautifully in sync with one another, Joel and Y/n surged towards one another, colliding in a kiss that could have stretched twenty years and back.
Joelâs arms wrapped around Y/nâs body, one around her waist and one sliding around her back, anchoring her to him. There was a duality to the way he held her; unbridled passion pressing his fingers deep into her skin, his pained adoration reining in the intensity of the touch, as if he was holding fine china. He practically melted as his hands roamed her, letting the full force of his feelings overwhelm him.
Y/nâs body trembled against Joel, her hands holding his wet cheeks as their lips frantically moved together, clashing and submitting to one another so perfectly. When close became not close enough, she wrapped her arms around Joelâs neck, leaving no space between them. She wept into their kiss, euphoria putting every inch of her at ease. She could feel nothing but him and him alone.
As their touches intensified, their lips digging for more and more of each other, Joel maneuvered them backwards. He blindly guided them until Y/nâs knees hit the edge of the bed, the two of them falling back onto it, never breaking from one another.
They spent their night falling apart and putting each other back together. Twenty years and three months of yearning was spilled out into the darkness of the early morning hours, both Joel and Y/n pouring all the love theyâd ever felt for one another into each kiss.
âââââââââ
Y/nâs eyes fluttered open, the clouded sunlight waking her up before anyone could knock on her door.
She could feel the absence of Joel without reaching across the sheets.
Sinking her teeth into her kiss-swollen lip, she shut her eyes and drew a slow breath. The night was never going to change either of their plans, it had been a funeral for all theyâd never mourned. Neither of them could have afforded for it to be anything else.
It was a comfortable numbness to settle back into, longing for Joel against the reality of their world.
Y/n dressed in the new clothes Maria had left for her in her room, returning to Joelâs bedroom only to make the bed. It was the least she could do.
While she was tucking the quilt in, a knock on the door drew her focus. It was Tommy. Despite the years of separation, they could still read each other like the siblings theyâd almost been. Tommyâs sad eyes registered Y/nâs unusually quiet demeanor and he knew that she was feeling the loss of his brother timelessly, just as she would have in 2003.
âEllie up?â Y/n asked, finishing up with the blanket.
âI think,â Tommy replied, âHavenât checked on her yet.â
Y/n settled the pillows back under the headboard, smoothing down a crumbled edge of the quilt and stood up straight. She was making the rest of the journey without Joel, but she was still going to hold her head high.
âGimme a minute with her,â Y/n said, squeezing past Tommy in the doorway, determined not to look back at the room. She crossed the hall to Ellieâs door, gently knocking.
âCome in.â
The second Y/n walked in the room, she knew that Ellie had been expecting Joel in a new state of mind. There was barely concealed disappointment in the young girlâs eyes. Y/n smoothed her hands over her jeans and came to sit next to her in the bay window. Before they took one more step in their journey together, Y/n needed to make something clear.
âI know you didnât sign up for any of this,â she began, âI know itâs been hard. Youâve seen things that no one should ever see, let alone someone your age,â Y/n paused, this was as honest as sheâd ever been with Ellie, âAnd I know youâve lostâŚso much.â
Ellieâs eyes shifted in Y/nâs direction before darting back forward.
âAnd itâs okay, you donât have to tell me any of it,â Y/n carefully reached out and placed her hand over Ellieâs, âBut Iâm not walking out on you.â
Ellie looked up finally, watching the words fall off of Y/nâs lips.
âIâm with you until you tell me to stop,â Y/n continued, giving a small smile, âEven then...â
The side of Ellieâs mouth barely quirked upwards, that was enough for Y/n to know she had taken the words to heart. Since the beginning of their journey, it had been her and Ellie above all else.
Tommy knocked on the door, poking his head in. âReady?â
Y/n looked to Ellie to decide, waiting until the girl stood to rise with her. Tommy handed Y/n her backpack which she promptly slung over her shoulders. She was thankful, at least, that Tommy was finishing out the rest of the trip with them.
The three of them filed out of the house, it had snowed heavier at some point in the night, creating an even thicker blanket.
âStables,â Tommy said, beginning to guide them in the direction.
âHang on,â Y/n said, cutting across the street in a move that surprised herself, âIâll be right back.â
She climbed the steps to Tommyâs house, opening the unlocked door and entering. She bypassed the living room entirely, making her way through until she found the kitchen, where Maria was seated with a cup of coffee.
Mariaâs fingers traced the handle of the mug, staring down at the liquid, âAre you here to tell me my husband will be fine and I shouldnât worry?â
âNo,â Y/n shook her head, âI mean, he will be, butâŚno. I came to say thank you.â
Maria dragged her gaze up to Y/n, sheâd given enough to warrant wondering what exactly she was being thanked for.
âForâŚâ Y/n exhaled, dancing carefully around the memory of the woman holding her as she wept, âFor-â
Maria held up a knowing hand, her voice gaining a softer edge, âYouâre welcome.â
Y/n hesitantly smiled, the woman had allowed her to grieve in a way nobody else ever had. A simple thanks seemed too simple, but it was all she had to offer. She turned on her heel to leave and let her have her morning.
âHang on,â Maria called her back, rising from the table and heading down the hall. She returned with Y/nâs rifle and handgun, extending them out to their rightful owner. As Y/n reached for them, she pulled them back.
âYou make sure my baby has a father,â Maria demanded, her eyes pleading with Y/n.
âWith my life,â Y/n promised, it was one of the truest things sheâd ever said.
Maria handed her the weapons, watching Y/n sling the rifle over her back and holster the handgun. She would never trust her brother-in-law, but she wanted to trust the sister-in-law she could have had.
Y/n exited the house, making her way back to Tommy and Ellie as quick as she could without slipping. Upon seeing the returned firearms, Ellie held up her own pistol, somehow mysteriously returned to her. One look to Tommyâs averted gaze told Y/n all she needed to know.
The three of them strode past the animal pens and into the stables, the same melancholy cloud hanging over them. Y/n was ready to take her night spent with the man she loved and tuck it away in her mind as nothing more than a beautiful moment in time.
When she turned towards one of the stalls, she hadnât expected to see him standing in front of her.
Joel had made a lot of mistakes in his life, a lot. Most of them spanning over the last two decades, but many had come before. The one that kept him up at night, the one he saw in his dreams, the one that would haunt him every hour of every day would forever be leaving Y/n. Not just because heâd lost the love of his life, but because heâd made the decision for her. Heâd played with her life in a way that made her still standing and breathing a damn miracle. Somewhere between leaving the warmth of her body in bed and saddling his horse, heâd realized he couldnât take that away from her or Ellie.
âYou came here to say goodbye or something?â Ellie asked.
âNo,â Joel replied, still fiddling with one of the saddle straps, âI came here to steal one of these horses and go.â
âI woulda gave you one,â Tommy said.
âI know,â Joel turned to them, addressing everyone but Y/n, âAnywayâŚthat was thirty minutes ago and I guessâŚâ he stepped forward, finally letting his eyes fall on the woman before Ellie, âYou deserve a choice.â
Everything at war inside Y/n settled at Joelâs words.
âI still think youâd be better off with Tommy-â Joel began.
Ellie had heard enough, shoving the bag of food Tommy had packed them into Joelâs chest, âLetâs go,â she looked back to Y/n as she moved towards the horse, âSay yes.â
Y/n nearly smiled at Ellieâs bossiness, her and Joelâs eyes meeting softly. She hadnât expected him there, but the change in heart, in the way he was handling the situation was even more unexpected and more welcome. She gave a reserved nod, allowing her cheeks to tug her lips upwards.
Joel could never go make up for what heâd done to Y/n. But whatever time they had left together was going to be spent trying.
Y/n turned to Tommy, âWeâre gonna need another horse.â
Tommy nodded, unlatching another stallâs lock, leading one of the horses out and handing the reins to Y/n. âMaybe donât tell Maria about thisâŚâ he smirked.
Y/n nodded, âGotcha.â
The four of them exited the stables and finished readying the horses. Joel and Y/n both helped Ellie onto the one Joel would ride.
âHold onto both,â Joel instructed, handing Ellie the reins.
âMm-hmm,â Ellie nodded, her mood had already perked up.
Y/n and Joel came to Tommy, the three of them standing in a triangle. It was the first moment the three of them had shared since the night before.
âGeneral direction?â Joel asked.
âHead southeast till you hit I-25,â Tommy answered, âItâs right off the interstate, shouldnât be hard to miss.â
There was a brief pause before Tommy spoke up again, âPromise me yâall are gonna stick together.â
Joel gazed over at Y/n, feeling the history between each of Tommyâs words. Under the cover of night, it would have cut right through him. Now, it was a guarantee he could give both of them.
âI promise,â Joel said, his eyes never leaving Y/nâs. It was the first time sheâd smiled at him in a long time, and he felt a new surge of strength through him.
Tommy pulled Joel in first, embracing him with a prayer that this wouldnât be the last time he laid eyes on his brother. He tugged Y/n into his chest after, wishing the same. He couldnât regain them only to lose them.
Y/n relaxed in Tommyâs arms, wishing they could stay in the safety of Jackson just a little longer. Twenty years of struggle, a little relief, and then back out into the jaw of danger.
âThereâs a place for you here,â Tommy said, keeping a hand on Y/nâs shoulder and looking to Joel, âAll of you.â
âCountinâ on it,â Joel said, earning a l eyebrow raise from Y/n. He didnât feel like explaining his answer any further.
Joel glanced at Tommyâs rifle hitched to his shoulder, âCould I borrow that?â
âYeah,â Tommy reached for the gun.
ââCause Maria took mine, you know?â Joel added.
Tommy smiled, âI already said yes, Joel.â
Y/n chuckled, she hadnât missed Joel scanning the firearms on her person.
âAdios, big brother,â Tommy said, taking one last long look at Joel.
Reluctantly, Y/n and Joel rounded their horses. As Y/n slipped one foot into her stir-up and prepared to swing her leg over, two familiar hands fell on her hips, helping to lift her. When she looked down, Joel was standing below her, his eyes tracing the curve of her calf he was holding. Y/nâs skin tingled under his touch.
They werenât going to analyze it to death, but things had changed.
Joel saddled his own horse, Ellie wrapping her arms around his body, and the three of them rode through town. Tommy followed them to the gate, a few of the residents opening it up for them. With a final shared look between the three of them, Joel and Y/n led their horses out of Jacksonâs borders, parting with Tommy.
Y/nâs chest tightened as soon as the gates slammed shut, theyâd had a few wonderful hours of sanctuary. Back in the throes of losing their lives, she wanted to run back.
Joel could sense her anxiety, it was so similar to how he was feeling. If the stakes werenât so high, he would have never left. He took one foot out of his stirrups and nudged Y/nâs boot with his, dragging her eyes to him. He gave a small nod to let her know he was there, for the first time in twenty years, he was with her in any and all ways she needed him.
âââââââââ
It took them a solid day of travel, with sneaky glances and reserved smiles, for Joel and Y/n to start talking.
Closer to sunset, Joel decided to cave and teach Ellie how to shoot with the rifle. Sheâd practically fallen off the horse in her rush to get on the ground.
âWide right,â Joel instructed, after Ellie had missed her fourth shot, âYouâre flinchinâ.â
âThe targetâs too small,â she complained.
Y/n watched them from beside her horse, sneaking in a quick bite of food. Ellie and Joel were on their knees with the rifle resting on a log. Their closeness and the way Joel was guiding her through her shots wasnât lost on Y/n and for the first time, she didnât think it was lost on Joel either.
âI made it bigger than I shouldâve,â he told Ellie, âEject the cartridge.â
Ellie did as she was told, âAnd I am not flinching.â
âMm-hmm,â Joel humored her.
âThe rifle just sucks.â
âOkay, give it,â Joel said, reaching for the gun.
Ellie gladly handed it over and switched spots with him, âIt doesnât aim right.â
âMm-hmm,â Joel adjusted his position.
âYouâll see,â Ellie insisted.
Y/n dusted the crumbs off her hands and came to watch, âHow can you tell itâs busted if youâve used it?â
Ellie gestured to the target Joel and Y/n had made her, ââCause I shouldâve been able to fucking hit that!â
âAh,â Y/n smiled, âSo youâre just that good? Never touched a rifle in your life, but youâve got the raw talent.â
Ellie flipped Y/n off, settling in beside Joel with a pair of binoculars to spot the target. Y/n moved to stand a few inches away from Joel.
âA deep breath in, slow breath out,â Joel recited, he was ultra aware of Y/nâs presence beside him, âYou squeeze the trigger like you love it. GentleâŚsteadyâŚâ he purposefully paused, unable to help himself, âNice and slow.â
An involuntary heat creeped up Y/nâs neck and landed in her cheeks.
âYou gonna shoot or get this thing or get it pregnant?â Ellie smirked.
When Joel glared up at Ellie and stopped to see Y/nâs reaction after, she kept her eyes dead ahead on the target. The small smile gracing her lips told Joel enough.
âIt isnât gonna work,â Ellie insisted, looking through the lenses of the binoculars, âIt doesnât aim right.â
Joel took a flawless shot, the bullet cutting through the middle of their target.
Ellieâs jaw dropped, âYou dick.â
Proud of himself, Joel casually shrugged it off.
âOkay, okay,â Y/n nudged Joelâs leg with her foot, âNow that the amateurs have had their turnâŚâ
Joel let go of the gun and scooted to the side, allowing Y/n the space to kneel down against the log. Even under the circumstances, teaching a fourteen year old how to defend herself in the worst case scenario, with the wind brushing through her air and her brow knit in concentration, Joel couldnât help but admire Y/nâs beauty.
They had yet to talk about what had happened between them on their last night in Jackson. He didnât know where they stood, what she was feeling, or the smartest way to go about finding out. Coming back to her and Ellie had been pure emotion. It wasnât just that he didnât want to leave them, he couldnât.
âHang on,â Joel held up a hand before Y/n took a shot, moving in closer to her, âPostureâs wrong.â
âMy postureâs fine,â Y/n said plainly.
Joel decided to test the waters, stretching an arm out around Y/nâs body and sliding his trigger finger over his. His other hand reached forward to envelop hers against the body of the rifle.
Y/n tried to conceal her smirk as Joel wrapped himself around her, her skin felt like it was buzzing and crackling under the pressure of his body.
âEighth of an inch could be the difference between life and death,â Joel defended his actions, his lips nearly brushing Y/nâs ear.
âMmm,â Y/n hummed, sucking on her bottom lip and trying to pull it straight.
Carefully, Joel rotated her body a barely imperceptible amount. Through his gloves, he could feel the way Y/nâs pulse sped up under his touch and decided heâd made the right call.
âYou gotta think through every move,â Joel said, the depth of his voice rumbling against Y/nâs back, âDonât rush through it.â
Y/n lined her eye up with the viewfinder, deciding to join in on Joelâs game. âThereâs not always enough time. Sometimes you gotta be fast,â she paused, âAnd firm.â
Joel felt his own heart rate pick up, the adrenaline of their banter sending him back to the night before. But Y/n still hadnât succeeded in catching him off guard.
âNobodyâs shootinâ back,â Joel said, readjusting his grip on her hands, âYou can take your time.â
Attempting to take a steady breath, Y/n fired her shot, the bullet lodging itself a millimeter apart from Joelâs.
Y/n pulled away from the viewfinder, turning her head towards Joel only to find him waiting for her.
âI think I couldâve done that on my own,â she purred.
Joelâs eyes were locked on her lips, nearly admitting defeat and giving into the tension theyâd created. âGuess weâll never know,â he replied huskily.
âNice and slow, huh?â Ellie interrupted the moment, smirking at them, âFuckinâ disgusting.â
Y/n smiled as Joelâs head dropped a little, sliding the gun back into his hands and getting to her feet.
âCome on, Cowgirl Jane,â she pulled on Ellieâs shoulders, steering the girl back to the horses, âSaddle up.â
Joel watched the two of them walk back to the horses, his eyes focusing on Y/nâs silhouette as she tugged Ellieâs body into hers. For months, all he could think of was what could have been, what almost had been. Heâd never stopped to think that he had something so similar to what heâd lost in front of him the whole time.
âââââââââ
They camped for the night under a rock formation, similar to the one theyâd slept at the night before making it to Jackson. Ellie was tired enough to call it a night earlier than usual, leaving Joel and Y/n to themselvesâŚfor the first time since their conversation.
They sat across the fire from one another, unable to tear their gazes away for more than maybe five seconds. It had been like that all day, they couldnât keep their eyes off one another. If a stranger took one look at them, they would never guess theyâd been running from each other just 24 hours prior.
âYou warm enough?â Joel asked, scanning the layers she had on.
âMm-hmm,â Y/n nodded, heating her hands by the fire.
Joel settled back against his rock, watching the light of the flames dance across her face. It was the same shade of orange as the bedroom lamp had been.
âItâs rude to stare, Miller,â Y/n remarked, feeling the heat of his deep brown eyes on her.
ââM not starinâ,â Joel replied, a lovestruck smile pulling at his mouth.
âReally?â Y/n chortled, finally meeting his gaze, âThen whatâre you doinâ?â
It had been three months of avoiding looking at her too long, Joel wanted to take his time and admire every inch of her face for as long as she deserved to be admired, âSomethinâ else.â
Y/n felt the blood rush to her cheeks again, Joel could wield sentiment just as expertly as a gun. It was so tempting to just watch him watch her all night.
But they had to face the music at some point.
âListen,â Joel started, his gaze darting to his hands in his lap, âAbout last nightâŚâ
âYeahâŚâ Y/n nodded, hugging one of her knees to her chest.
âI, uhâŚâ Joel looked earnestly back up at her, âI didnât plan that or anything.â
Y/n nearly laughed, âI didnât think you did. And for the record, thatâs not why I was in your room.â
Joel nodded, never in a million years could either of them have guessed how the night would have ended.
âDo youâŚâ he paused, fearing the answer he knew he might get, âRegret it?â
Y/n knew she was well within her rights to resent Joel, in one way or another. But the thing was, she was tired of holding a grudge against him, of pretending like he wasnât still engrained in her soul. What happened between them had been unexpected, unplanned andâŚbeautiful.
âYâknow,â Y/n began, âI really tried to hate you at the beginning of all this. I mean, there was a part of me that definitely did butâŚI never couldâve made good on any of those promises to kill youâŚâ she inhaled, âIâve spent twenty years justâŚwanting to scream every time I thought about you. And then at some point, one of the many times I ran that day back in my mindâŚI understood. Why you did it.â
Joelâs amusement was sucked right out of him, a somber expression capturing his face again.
âIt made sense,â Y/n nodded, watching the fire instead of Joel, ââCause after IâŚâ she stopped short of the horrific memory, âAfter I did what I didâŚI broke. I mean, I shattered on the floor and I never found all the piecesâŚ
âYouâre still you,â Joel interjected, unable to help himself.
âJoelâŚâ Y/n smiled sadly at him, âIâm not the same. Neither are you. I donât think you can go through something like what we went through and not come out differentâŚ,â Y/n sighed, âAnd itâs not fair of me to keep blaming you for what I did after you left.â
The last thing Joel was going to let her do was try and make him feel better about what heâd done to her, âY/n, I-â
âNo,â Y/n readjusted herself against the rock, âStop. I can be upset you left me, I can be sad about itâŚbut I canât blame you for the choices I made. They were mine to make andâŚâ she sniffled, âI have to live with them.â
âSo, noâŚâ Y/n sighed, âI donât regret it. Any of it.â
Joel shifted, so unsettled by how the air was shifting. He couldnât handle the way Y/n was treating him. It wasnât what he deserved.
âJustâŚplease hate me,â he asked of her, his throat forming a lump, âIn some way, justâŚjust a little.â
Y/n knew what self-loathing looked like, she practiced it every minute of every day. Sheâd never felt something stronger than the way she despised herself, and she didnât want Joel to drown in the same whirlpool.
Picking herself off the ground, she walked around the fire, nudging Joelâs legs flat against the dirt. She lowered herself onto his lap, rendering him still and speechless.
Joelâs breath caught in his chest as Y/n sat atop him, her gaze travelling across his face and her hand coming up to cup his cheek. He nearly flinched at the softness of her touch, here he was begging for her vitriol, and she was bathing him in honey.
âWe donât always get what we want, Joel,â she whispered, her words crossing the small, small distance between them.
Joel could do nothing but tremble at the sentiment, underlying feelings rising to the sentenceâs surface and embracing him. None of it was fair, what heâd put her through, what sheâd gone through after, and what had put them there in the first place. He knew he didnât deserve Y/n anymore, if he ever had, butâŚhe wanted to be selfish. He wanted to love her again with the full force that came with twenty years of missing a person.
It all came down to whether or not he would let himself.
And the way her fingers grazed his cheek and her tender gaze flipped his stomach practically threw him into her arms.
Joel leaned forward, pressing his lips to Y/nâs in a passionate, yet slow kiss. She caught his face in her palms, allowing him to drag her closer till their chests were pressed together. It hadnât taken long for their bodies to remember the feel of one another. Joel inhaled deeply, breathing Y/n in like she was his life support, and she was. He would forever live and die by her.
When they broke, muscle memory brought their foreheads together. The crackling of the fire and their quickened breaths were the soundtrack to their intimate moment. Y/n couldnât help the tears welling in her eyes.
âWhatâs wrong?â Joelâs hands sliding up her back, one coming to cup the back of her neck.
Y/n shook her head, biting back a smile as her eyes travelled Joelâs face. âI just never thought Iâd see you againâŚâ she whispered, her thumb gliding over Joelâs beard.
Joel turned into her palm, pressing apologetic kisses to the skin. The same thought had echoed through his mind for two decades.
âYou still gotta give me hell,â he said in between kisses, âMake me pay for what I put you through.â
Y/n smiled, her skin tingling at his touch, âStop.â
Joelâs lips travelled to her wrist, âFire a warninâ shot every once in a while, just to keep me on my toes.â
âShut up,â Y/n laughed softly, pulling his chin up to gain access to his lips.
Under the midnight Wyoming sky, they let themselves fall for each other all over again. It would never be exactly as it had been, they were different people, but the core flame remained the same. Joel and Y/n had travelled for twenty years only to find their way back to one another. In every kiss, every touch, there was forgiveness. There was redemption. Above all, there was love that nothing, not even Cordyceps could lay waste to.
When their kisses began to slow, exhaustion hitting them both, Joel pulled back. âGet some sleep,â he brushed a strand of hair from Y/nâs face, âI got first watch.â
âYou donât fucking wake me up,â Y/n smiled, âEver.â
âNo, I donât,â Joel ran his hands slowly up and down her back. He had a hard time dragging her from peace to the cold reality they spent their waking hours in.
Y/n rolled her eyes and rolled off of Joelâs lap, crossing the fire to retrieve her sleeping bag. Joel watched her every move in daze, fully consumed by his love for her once again.
She dropped her bag at Joelâs side, pointing to him decisively before sliding in, âWake me up.â
âOkay,â Joel smiled, humoring her. They both knew he wouldnât.
Y/n settled in next to him, resting one hand on his thigh. She knew they were too vulnerable to ask him to lay next to her, but she needed some piece of him to fall asleep.
Joel sat there, holding his rifle for the first time with a smile on his face. He had ended up right where heâd tried so hard not to be, exposed by his instinctual need to love someone. He glanced down at Y/n and further away at Ellie. He couldnât say that he regretted falling captive to either of them.
âââââââââ
The next few days went by in a blur of snow-coated landscapes and trees that all looked identical.
Perhaps the most beautiful part of Joel and Y/nâs reunion was the freedom it allowed them. They didnât have to hide any more behind their shields, they didnât have to try and find fault in each other. They were unshackled from their grudge and it didnât just serve them.
âSo the way they ran stuff in Jackson,â Ellie asked on their second day of travel, âWas that how things used to be?â
âNo,â Joel answered as he guided their horse, âThe country was too big for that. Back then, there were basically two main ways of lookinâ at things. Some people wanted to own everything. And some people didnât want anyone to own anything at all.â
âMost people didnât even care about the actual issues,â Y/n added, remembering sitting through mind-numbing debates amongst friends at dinner parties or candidates on a tv screen, âThey just wanted to argue.â
âSo which one were you guys?â Ellie asked.
âNeither,â Joel answered for both him and Y/n, âWe just did our jobs.â
âWhich wasâŚâ Ellie tried to recall the details theyâd told them earlier, âBuilding?â
âThatâs right. Houses, stores, that kind of thing. We were called contractors,â Joel replied, nodding to Y/n, âShe used to sell me all my supplies.â
âOh,â Ellie smirked and pumped an eyebrow at Y/n, âThat makes senseâŚyou hooked him up.â
Y/n rolled her eyes, âYou live in the fucking gutter, child.â
Ellie snickered, before lowering her voice, ââThe Contractor.â Thatâs pretty cool.â
âYeah, we were cool,â Joel breathed, deciding rewriting an insignificant piece of history wouldnât stunt Ellieâs growth, âEverybody loved contractors.â
Y/n nearly snorted, turning her face so Joel could maintain his reputation in Ellieâs eyes but earned a light kick from him to the shin. When she looked back, Ellie was resting her face against Joelâs back and Joel was beaming. The loverâs eyes met, a silent understanding passing between them that this was the happiest either of them had been sinceâŚ
Y/n thought to the plastic butterfly that had survived the last three months in her backpack. Joel still didnât know it was there.
Each night that they camped, Y/n drifted a little closer to Joel until the second after theyâd start their fire, sheâd settle right into his arms. Ellie continually took the piss out of them, making a suggestive remark or serenading them with an off-key rendition of an old ballad. Y/n would laugh and throw something at her, Joel would watch them both and try to conceal just how much they were bringing him back to life.
When Joel would stand watch, Y/n would be right by his side, unable to be apart from him even in sleep. On the nights where heâd let her take the second shift, desperate for a momentâs rest, heâd lay his head on her leg. Twenty years of separation were driving them together with a force neither of them could fight.
Each day, Joel and Y/n explained a little more about their lives or how the world had worked to Ellie. She absorbed it all as best she could, but it was naturally difficult to imagine a world different than the only one sheâd known.
âOkay, so if you mess up your fourth down,â Ellie recited what Joel had explained to her, âThen you give the ball to the other team?â
âRight,â Joel confirmed, âItâs called a turnover.â
âTurnover,â Ellie tested out the word, âBut if you make it to ten yards, then youâre back to first down?â
Y/n guided her horse alongside them, âDo you remember that Cowboys game we went to?â
It was the first time either of them had brought up one of the lighter periods of their past. âTommyâs birthday?â Joel recalled, âYeah, they barely pulled through.â
âWe made it up on the big screen,â Y/n remembered, a smile coming to her face.
âAnd Tommy was so fuckinâ wasted, he started dancinâ,â Joel continued the memory.
Y/n grinned, âWe had to pour him into the car, let him sleep it off on the couch.â
Joel chortled under his breath, for the first time feeling like he could look back on the happier parts of his life without feeling guilt. Y/n represented both the best and worst times heâd gone through, the hope and the fall of all his dreams. The light she was bringing back into his space was illuminating all their history, and they couldnât sustain themselves anymore on grief.
He wrapped the reins around one fist and reached over to Y/nâs horse, pulling her hand into his. She looked across to him, smiling warmly and tightening her fingers around his.
Ellie groaned, making a convincing gag sound.
âWould you rather us try and kill each other all day?â Y/n asked as Joel scoffed.
âThat was easier to stomach,â Ellie remarked, though it didnât really bother her all that much. She liked Joel and Y/n getting along.
They came up on the I-25, just as Tommy had directed them. The cityâs outline acted as a homing beacon.
âWell, how âbout that?â Joel said, âMade it in five days.â
âEasy days,â Ellie added, âI donât know what Tommy was so afraid of.â
âStill time to find out,â Joel commented, he was happy, but he couldnât be delusional.
Ellie lowered her voice and threw on a bad Southern drawl, ââStill time to find out.ââ
Joel glared back at her before she switched to a strained, creepy whisper, ââThe Contractorrrr.ââ
Y/n and Ellie shared a laugh, Joel rolled his eyes and dropped Y/nâs hand, causing them to laugh harder. The sound warmed his chest.
They rode another hour before making it to the outskirts of the university.
âWow,â Y/n muttered, taking in the corroded architecture.
âI know,â Joel agreed, having not stepped foot on a campus since tours in his junior year of high school, âBeen a while.â
ââHome of the Big Horns,ââ Ellie read off the sign, âWhat does that mean?â
âTeam mascot,â Joel explained, âItâs a kind of sheep.â
âOh, see?â Ellie said, âOne step closer to your dream. Donât see any Fireflies though.â
âTheyâre gonna be further in,â Y/n said, nudging her horse forward to lead them. It had been three months since sheâd actually thought of herself as a Firefly. Being with Joel, taking care of Ellie had made her feel like her old self. To put on her other identity feltâŚunnatural.
They rode through the dormitory section of campus, of all the abandoned buildings sheâd seen over the years, Y/n was sure this was the strangest.
âSo these places,â Ellie started, âPeople would live here and like, what? Go to classes and stuff?â
âYup,â Joel answered,
âEven though they were adults,â Ellie struggled. FEDRA recruited straight out of high school. College was, truly, an alien concept to her.
âSort of adults,â Joel clarified, âI think it was just as much about partyinâ and findinâ themselves as anythinâ else.â
âHey, hey,â Y/n spoke up, âSome of us were studious.â
Joel smiled, âAlright. And figurinâ out what they wanted to do with their lives.â
âWhat they wanted to do with their lives,â Ellie repeated, chuckling to herself.
âIt didnât always go that way,â Y/n added, âI mean, I went for four years, got a degree and it stayed on a wall. I never used it. Ended up in a hardware store.â
âSo why go?â Ellie asked.
Y/n shrugged, âLike he said, you try to find yourself at that ageâŚâ she hesitated to continue, âI didnât find myself till much later in life.â
Joel knew exactly what she was referring to, transporting himself somewhere between their first date and their last kiss.
âSo Iâve been thinkinâ,â he spoke up.
âMm-hmm?â Ellie hummed.
âI donât want a sheep ranch, actually. I mean, if the deal is I can do anything?â
Ellie looked over his shoulder up at him, âThatâs the deal.â
âWellâŚâ Joel was about to reveal the very last secret heâd been keeping, âWhen I was a kid, I wanted to be a singer.â
âShut up,â Ellie laughed.
Joel looked back at her, âWhy is that funny?â
âYou gotta sing something now,â Ellie said.
âNo.â
âOh, you canât just drop that on her and run,â Y/n grinned, âCâmon, hit us with a little Patsy Cline.â
âYeah, câmon, man,â Ellie joined in, âIâm not gonna laugh.â
âYouâre already laughinâ,â Joel pointed out.
âYeah, okay, true,â Ellie replied, it was just too funny to think about dark, brooding Joel belting out an 80âs pop song or a 90âs grunge anthem, âWell, youâre singinâ for us later. Iâm gonna save the fuckinâ world, man. Itâs the least you can do for me.â
âI canât top that,â Y/n smiled, âBut Iâll make your life a complete hell if I donât get to hear that voice again.â
Joel smirked, looking between the two women who could make him do just about anything, âFair enough.â
Y/n and Joel drove their horses deeper into campus, coming up on what would have once been considered the quad. Now, there were wild animals freely roaming the frozen grass.
âAre those monkeys?â Ellie excitedly asked.
âMust be from the old labs,â Joel considered.
Ellie laughed as they chased each other away, âLook at them go.â
âFirst time seeinâ a monkey?â Joel asked.
âFirst time seeinâ a monkey.â
Y/n was a few feet ahead of them, scanning for her west coast counterparts. Spray painted on some signage, she spotted the Firefly symbol.
âHey,â she called back to Joel, who was already coming to her side, âLook.â
Ellie sighed, âHere we goâŚâ
Joel and Y/n kept their rifles against their chests as they followed the path, Y/n continued to ride ahead of them to handle any of the talking.
âGuard stations,â Ellie observed.
âEmpty,â Y/n added, a twinge of suspicion lacing through her stomach.
âUhâŚâ Ellie dragged out the non-verbal question.
âYeah,â Joel confirmed.
âGun?â
It was foolish to think that their happiness would last the whole way to the base without a hint of trouble. âYeah,â Joel sighed.
Y/n slid off her horse first, tucking her reins with Joels between a tree and its branch. The two of them shared a look, tender yet hardened as they removed their gloves to handle their guns better.
âStick behind us,â Y/n ordered Ellie, who already knew the drill.
Joel and Y/n walked side by side, their pistols unholstered, as they entered the main building. The inside was utter destruction, everything from medical equipment to vials and medication bottles strewn across the floor.
âThere were definitely doctors here,â Ellie said, picking up a small box from one of the carts left standing.
Joel picked up a file, flipping the manilla folder open and finding a piece of yellow pad paper.
âThis is a packing list,â he explained, âSomethinâ you make before moving.â
He turned it to Y/n, who examined the contents of the list. Marlene had moved the Firefly base in Boston a few times before theyâd found their home, their lists were nearly identical to this one.
âThey just left?â Ellie asked.
There was a metallic clang from somewhere on a floor above them, all of their muscles tensing at the sound.
âMaybe not all of âem,â Ellie looked to Joel and Y/n.
The three of them carefully climbed the stairs, following the noise to the third floor. Joel managed to get ahead of Y/n, making himself a human shield. The same mess that littered the ground floor was scattered down the hall. Something, or someone, had cause the Fireflies to leave in a hurry.
Pausing outside the room in which the sound was coming from, Joel held up a hand to Ellie. Y/n scrunched down, sneaking past the doors and coming to stand on the other side. She and Joel shared an affirmative nod, drawing their guns and slowly entering the room.
Where the monkeys revealed themselves as the noisy culprits.
âJeez,â Y/n breathed.
âWell,â Joel sighed, âAt least it ainât Clickers.â
âYeah, no Fireflies either,â Ellie began to roam the room, âMaybe in all that research, they turned into fuckinâ monkeys.â
Y/n put her hands to her hips, throwing her head back to stare at the ceiling. She wracked her brain for anything, any piece of information about the base out west. An emergency evacuation plan, a second meeting placeâŚ
âYou got anything?â Joel asked, seemingly telepathic.
âNothing,â Y/n replied, scrunching her eyes shut, âIâve never been privy to all of Marleneâs secrets.â
The two of them began to examine the room, Y/n was drawn to a cork-board with papers pinned to it. There was a map of the country in the middle with thumbtacks leading a path all the way to Salt Lake City.
âHey,â Y/n called for Joel and Ellie.
âThatâs where they went?â Ellie pointed her gun towards Utah.
âAll the pins lead there,â Joel observed, âMaybe gettinâ ahead of the weatherâŚbetter facilities? I donât know.â
Y/n shook her head, âI mean, I donât remember there being a base out there but-â
A set of unfamiliar voices interrupted her thought.
Joel and Y/n hurried to the window, barely peeking out enough to spot a group of raiders outside.
âOut the back,â Joel ordered, the three of them quickly rushing out the room.
They filed down the stairs and out the back entrance of the lab, taking shelter behind old sandbags as they listened for the raiding party. When all they heard was silence, Joel led them to the next point of safety.
âReady?â
Y/n and Ellie nodded, guns drawn and ready to make their grand escape.
The three of them ran across the distance to where theyâd left their horses. Joel and Y/n quickly holstered their rifles while Ellie tried to keep their animals calm.
âJoel! Y/n!â
Ellieâs cry caused them to spin around, one of the raiders had snuck up on them. He swung a lead pipe around, Joel pulling Y/n out of the way just in time before it collided with her skull. Y/n reached for her rifle again, ramming it in their attackerâs stomach, causing him to stumble. Joel took the opportunity to lunge at him, slamming him up against the tree. He took a shiner to the chin before flipping the raider in his grip and cutting off his airways with a chokehold.
âGet her,â Joel grunted to Y/n as the man struggled against him.
Y/n ran to Ellie, who had her gun aimed with a shaking hand, and pulled her back from the danger.
Joel waited until the raider was too weak to fight back before snapping his neck with a sickening crack and dropping him to the ground. He turned around to Y/n and Ellie, his chest rising and falling in heaves.
They were both staring at his abdomen in horror.
He looked down in confusion, a knife sticking out of him.
The world seemed to stop, for all of them, as realization hit in different ways. Joel grabbed hold of the daggerâs handle, pulling it out of him with a grunt. His blood began to pour out of him.
Y/nâs slackened jaw trembled, watching it all unfold as Joelâs eyes flew up to hers.
âJoel,â Ellie cried, the only one of them still thinking clearly and spotting the other raiders coming up on them, âGet on the horse.â
Joel managed to take a few steps forward while Y/n rushed to her own horse. He mounted his horse, letting out a blood-curdling cry of pain that, despite all their instincts, neither of them could stop to care for.
âEl,â Y/n called as she mounted her own animal, âGo!â
Joel and Ellie began to ride off with Y/n not far behind, she was trying to manage the horse and shoot. Most of her shots landed at the ground around the raiderâs feet.
Ellie took a few shots as well, âGet back!â
One fatal bullet hit one of the men, a warning to the others that may try to follow them.
Looking back for a split second, Y/n made a shot that cut through one of the raiderâs legs. She spun back around to urge her horse forward.
âJoel,â Y/n shouted, âRide.â
Through the shock that was beginning to hit his system, Joel could still understand her. He nudged the horse forward, their speed picking up and creating a wider berth between them and the men chasing after them.
It took them twenty minutes of riding until they were sure theyâd lost them.
âTheyâre not following us,â Ellie said, looking to their rear, âI think weâre safe.â
Y/n looked over at Joel, his eyes were glazed over as he hunched over the reins of the horse.
âJoel,â she called, as if she could warn him of what his body had already set in motion.
He slipped from his horse before Ellie or Y/n could do a thing.
âJoel,â the girl cried, âNo, no, no, no, shit!â
He fell to the snow with a grunt, his vision going black, the last thing is ears registered being-
âJoel!â
Y/n rushed off her horse, beating Ellie to his body and kneeling over it. His skin had turned three shades paler than his usual glow, Y/n felt his deathly cold cheeks and began to cry.
âNo, no, no,â she mumbled, tapping his face firmly, âJoel, wake up.â
âJoel?â Ellie called him, kneeling on his other side, âJoel?â
Y/n was sane enough to examine his wound, blood spilling out of it at an uncontrollable rate.
âShit,â she whimpered, âEllie, his hands.â
Ellie covered Joelâs hands and pressed down on the hole in an attempt to stop the flow.
âJoel, open your eyes,â Ellie ordered, leaning over his face, âOpen your eyes. Joel, you gotta get up.â
Panic mounted in Y/n quicker than it ever had, her mind flashing back to Outbreak Day, the last time sheâd felt the life slip from someone she loved.
âNo,â she begged, her tears falling onto Joelâs cheeks and rolling down his own face, âJoel, come on. Please, wake up.â
âWe canât fuckinâ do this without you,â Ellie began to choke on her own cries, âWe donât know where the fuck weâre going, what the fuck weâre gonna doâŚâ
They needed him.
Ellie let out one more heartbreaking croak of his name, âJoel.â
Y/n pressed her forehead to his as if she could will her life into him. She couldnât go twenty years missing him, get him back only to have him ripped from her.
âJoel, please,â she whined, âDonât do this to me. Donât do this to me.â
They sat in the snow, begging him to do something he couldnât.
Y/n fought against the fears bubbling in her throat, ready to swallow her. She had to think clearly and quickly if they had any chance of saving him.
She wrenched her backpack off her body, frantically pulling at her jacket until it was off her too. âEllie,â she sniffled, âLift his shoulders.â
Ellie crawled above Joelâs head and strained to lift him, Y/n forced and shimmied her coat underneath him, yanking it until it was around his lwoer back. She pulled the sleeves around to his front, lined them up with the wound and tied a tight knot. A makeshift tourniquet.
âWe gotta get him on the horse,â Y/n thought out loud, trying to think of the best way to move him, âBring one of âem down.â
Ellie ran to retrieve Y/nâs horse, leading it back to the dip in the land they were on. Y/n brushed a hand over Joelâs cheek again, praying he stayed unconscious for the next part.
âIâm gonna get him to his feet,â Y/n instructed through her tears, âYouâre gonna keep the horse steady, then youâre gonna help me get him on, okay?â
âMm-hmm,â Ellie nodded, just as emotional as Y/n.
âOkay,â Y/n wrapped one of Joelâs arms around her shoulders and hoisted him to a seated position, âCâmon, honey. Come on.â
Joelâs head lolled backwards, his lips were turning blue. It was better to try and keep him awake.
âJoel,â Y/n said into his ear, loudly, âJoel, câmon, stay awake for me.â
She got to her feet, calling on a supernatural strength she didnât know she possessed and getting Joel upright, only for his knees to go out. Ellie was quick to take hold of his other side, doing her best to keep him up. She and Y/n strained ahead to their horse, until it was time to lift him.
Y/n mounted the animal first, theyâd gotten Joel leaned up against it and Ellie was keeping him steady. âIâm gonna pull, youâre gonna push, okay?â
Ellie nodded.
âGo,â Y/n ordered, pulling Joel by his armpits up onto the horse with her. He let out a muffled groan as they did, a sad, but good sign. Ellie strained as she helped to lift him the rest of the way.
âI got you,â Y/n lowered him onto her back, the full weight of him pressing into her, âI got you.â
Joelâs head fell forward against Y/nâs shoulder, knowing even through his haze that it was a safe place to be.
âWhere do we go?â Ellie asked, having grabbed Y/nâs backpack and mounted her horse.
Y/n looked at the area around them, hopelessly clueless as to what their next move was. Joel wouldnât make the five day ride back to Jackson, and they couldnât go back to the university. It was uncharted waters, whichever way they went.
âWe find somewhere we can hide,â Y/n decided, on the verge of hyperventilating, âAnywhere.â
âWe passed that neighborhood on the way,â the girl recalled.
âYeah,â Y/n tugged Joelâs arms around her waist, âYeah, letâs try there.â
The two women urged their horses forward, somewhere between a sprint and a trot, cutting through the woods beside them to head back to their original route. Y/n clutched Joelâs hands, interlocking her fingers with his, determined not to let him die in her arms.

May 27th, 2003. Austin, Texas.
The refereeâs whistle rang through the air, signaling the play was starting. Sarah had the ball, her team was one goal away from winning the season. If she nailed the shot, sheâd bring them to victory.
Now, on his own, Joel was one of the loudest and proudest parents at the games. Adding in Tommy and Y/n had made them their own cheer section.
âGo, Sarah!â Y/n yelled.
âCâmon, babygirl,â Joel clapped, âCâmon.â
âFuckinâ nail it,â Tommy cheered, earning a light knock to the chest from Y/n, âFrickinâ nail it!â
Sarah wasnât listening to any of them, she was in the zone. She wound her leg back and kicked the ball, it flew through the air and straight through the goalieâs arms.
Y/n screamed and leapt into Joelâs arms, the whole crowd cheered wildly. Joel spun her around, this felt like a victory for all of them considering how much time theyâd spent practicing with Sarah.
After celebrating with her team and taking their yearly photo, Sarah bounded over to her family.
Joel picked his daughter up, not caring if he was embarassing her. Sarah hugged him back.
âYou were amazing,â he said, setting her back on the grass.
âYouâre so freakinâ good, it hurts,â Y/n grinned, wrapping Sarah in her arms.
âThanks,â the girl smiled up at Y/n.
Tommy high fived his niece, âCalls for a celebration.â
The four of them drove downtown to the ice cream shop. They parked themselves outside at a table in the shade. In celebration of Sarahâs impending graduation, her recent birthday and Y/n and Joelâs one year anniversary, they were driving down to the beach for a weekend.
âOkay,â Joel said in between bites, âIâve got the confirmation for the hotel printed out.â
âIâm going to the store tomorrow to pick up the food,â Y/n raised her spoon.
Sarah hummed enthusiastically, swallowing her dessert quickly. âCan you pick me up when you do?â
âYes,â Y/n nodded, âBut you canât run me into debt.â
âCan I come?â Tommy asked through a mouthful of ice cream.
âYou will run me into debt,â Y/n replied with a smile.
Tommy reached into his wallet, theatrically handing Y/n a twenty dollar bill. âBeer money,â he clarified.
âThank you,â Y/n replied, stuffing the money into her jean pocket, âWhat time are we leaving on Thursday?â
âI figure 9,â Joel answered, âTry and beat the traffic.â
Practical as he was, Joel was also plain excited. This was the first family vacation Y/n was joining them for.
âWeâre leavinâ on a Thursday morninâ,â Tommy interjected, âThereâs not gonna be any traffic.â
Joel peeked across the table to Y/n, who met his eyes with an equal level of contained enthusiasm. Celebrating one year of her in his life didnât warrant waiting a single minute longer than necessary.
âWonât hurt anybody,â Joel responded, shooting his girlfriend a wink.
ââââââââ
Come Thursday, the Millers and guest loaded their bags and coolers into Joelâs truck.
âSarah?â Y/n called from the bottom of the stairs, they were nearly ready to leave and she was still upstairs, âWe gotta go, babe.â
âComing,â she yelled down, skipping out of her room and down the stairs, carrying something in her hand.
âWhatcha got?â Y/n pointed to the small package.
Sarah waved it nonchalantly in the air, âItâs an anniversary present. For you and Dad.â
Y/nâs heart swelled, âYou didnât have to do that.â
âWell, I did,â she gave a small smile, before scrunching up her face, âJust please donât make out the entire trip.â
Snorting, Y/n wrapped her arms around Sarahâs neck and walked the two of them out of the house.
Joel and Tommy had just finished their thirty minute game of Tetris with the luggage. There were so many bags for only four days and four people.
âNo,â Tommy called out, spotting Sarahâs present, âNot one more fuckinâ thing comes into this truck.â
âItâs a carry-on,â Y/n shouted back with a smile, patting Sarahâs arm after, âBe there in a minute.â
Sarah skipped off to the backseat, passing her dad as she did. Joel ruffled her hair before locking eyes with Y/n across the driveway. She looked so natural, standing on his porch with his daughter in her arms, locking up the front door with her spare key. Sheâd settled into the family so well.
âSee somethinâ you like?â Y/n smiled, sticking her nose up in the air and letting the sun hit her.
âSomethinâ I love,â Joel replied, walking slowly towards her. He encircled her waist with one arm, his other hand holding her hip.
Y/n let her hands slide up Joelâs chest, âYour daughter has requested a vow of celibacy from us this weekend.â
Joel chortled, âThatâs âcause one day she woke up and decided us lookinâ at each other was disgusting.â
âWell, then,â Y/n got on he tiptoes and pressed a kiss to the tip of Joelâs nose, âSave it for the evenings.â
Joel nuzzled his nose against her cheek, savoring the warmth of her skin and the promise of her words.
âWhat happened to beatinâ traffic?â Tommy teased from the passenger seat.
Rolling his eyes, Joel turned around to his brother and glared at him. Tommy just smirked and tapped his foot against the dashboard.
âCome on,â Y/n intertwined her fingers with Joelâs, pulling him behind her and marching them both to the truck.
âSeatbelts,â Joel ordered as he got in the front seat.
Y/n settled herself in the backseat next to Sarah, who absentmindedly grabbed her hand and started playing with it. Of all the milestones her and Joel had hit in the past year, Sarahâs casual comfort with her was Y/nâs proudest.
âAlright, gang,â Joel started up the car and backed it out of the driveway, â6 hour drive, settle in.â
Y/n and Sarah cheered from the backseat and Joel swore he could feel a physical warmth spread across his chest.
âââââââââ
It took them all day to get to South Padre Island, having stopped for bathroom breaks and lunch on the way, but they made it in one piece.
Their hotel was modest and one of many on the strip that backed straight up to the beach. The view from the balcony was unmatched, nothing but sand and ocean as far as the eye could see.
Their first full day there, they spent all day on the beach. It was early enough in the year that the full force of summerâs heat hadnât hit yet. Joel stayed with their cooler, messing around on the guitar heâd brought in a beach chair. Tommy switched between relaxing in the shade with a beer and flirting with whatever lucky woman was in their vicinity. Sarah and Y/n walked the shore, searching for seashells.
Leaving Sarah to keep hunting, Y/n walked back to their spot, admiring the sight before her. Joel looked more at ease than sheâd ever seen him, strumming away in the cool shade.
âYouâre ogling meâ,â he said, trying to sound put off.
âYou look happy,â Y/n smiled, pushing past the humor.
Joel peeked up over his sunglasses, taking in the wind blowing through her hair and how the sun shone off her skin. âI am happy,â he replied.
Y/n walked around the back of his chair, bending over to encircle his neck. Joel kept on playing, trying to stay focused as she pressed a loving kiss to his cheek.
Looking out on the beach, Y/nâs eyes found Tommy, buying some girl an ice cream at a vendorâs cart. She watched Sarah, crouched down in the sand and hot on the trail of a particular shell. With Joel in her arms, and her chosen family happy, she felt like everything in her world was just as it should be.
Y/n rested her chin on Joelâs shoulder, âMe too.â
âââââââââ
Theyâd celebrated both Sarahâs graduation and Y/nâs anniversary on Saturday night with dinner on the beach. Thereâd been good food and good laughter, especially when Sarah tried oysters for the first time, managing to swallow the bite with a grimace.
When gifts were exchanged, Y/n, Joel and Tommy had compiled their money to get Sarah tickets to see her favorite band. Sheâd leapt out of her chair and bear hugged all three of them. For Joel and Y/nâs anniversary, she handed them a CD sheâd burned a playlist to. Songs sheâd heard them listen to or that the three of them had sung together in the car or while Joel played guitar.
Deep into the evening, when Tommy and Sarah had retired to their room across the hall, Joel and Y/n celebrated their anniversary privately.
Joelâs body weight Y/nâs down, pinning her hands above her head and pressing soft kisses across her face. At some point in the night, sheâd slipped on his t-shirt. He was convinced that if there was a heaven on earth, he was in it.
âPromise me something,â Y/n breathed, her lips brushing Joelâs cheekbone.
Joel rubbed his nose against Y/nâs, âAnything.â
Pressed into the bed, completely consumed by the man she loved, with a soft ocean breeze flooding through their balcony window, Y/n was in utter bliss. There was nothing that could have made the moment more perfect.
âPromise me itâll always be like this,â Y/n whispered, her urging eyes boring into Joelâs, âEven when it isnât.â
Joelâs grip on Y/nâs hands loosened, letting her slip out of his hold with a need to feel her arms around him. Neither of them were under any illusion that life was without its problems, theyâd run into them eventually. But through it all, Joel knew that the one thing that would never fade was their complete and utter devotion to one another. That was forever.
Joel brushed away a strand of hair stuck to Y/nâs face from the oceanâs humidity. He ran the tips of his fingers along her cheek, down her neck, tracing the path his lips had traveled moments ago.
âAlways,â he promised, his voice soft, but determined.
The roomâs energy was emotionally charged, bringing tears to Y/nâs eyes as she gazed up at Joel. He looked so beautiful hanging over her, it nearly broke her heart. She was so overcome with love for this man, she truly didnât know if she could handle any more. Joel overwhelmed her in the sweetest way possible.
The moonlight reflected off a single teardrop that slipped down Y/nâs cheek. Joel adjusted himself in concern, taking her face into his hand, âWhatâs wrong?â
Y/n smiled, sheâd never known one could be moved to tears by the simple act of adoring someone. âI just love you,â she pushed past the lump in her throat.
Joelâs breath caught in his chest. Even though heâd heard her say those words a hundred times, something about this utterance felt new.
He stroked his thumb over her cheek, wiping away the tearâs streak. They lay intwined, coming alive in one anotherâs eyes. Theyâd known for months, really since their first kiss, that theyâd be together a long, long timeâŚbut there, in a beachside hotel, wrapped in lily white sheets and each other, they knew they could never leave one another.
Joel dove back into Y/nâs lips, his hands slipping under his shirt she wore to hold her hips. He prayed that when the day came for him to die, heâd do so in her arms, her kiss stealing his final breath.
âââââââââ
2023. Kansas City, Missouri.
While the tensions were high the whole way, the five survivors made it through the tunnel system with no issues.
âDo you know where we are?â Joel asked Henry as they made their way through a door. He was still suspicious, nothing was ever as simple as a few tunnels and some luck.
âYeah,â he answered, âThe other side.â
Henry shone his flashlight on a dirty sign stating that it was, indeed, the parking lot to the Bank of America building. Theyâd made it out. Y/n huffed a sigh of relief, it was a much needed win.
The group headed for the street of the residential area, it was dark and empty allowing them the perfect cover. Joel had still insisted on no flashlights, just to be safe.
Joel led the group, with Ellie, Sam and Henry at the rear, and Y/n sandwiched between. She didnât particularly feel like being near Joel after the conversation with Henry. She was still trying to shake the memories from her brain, twenty years of wasted energy and not a single one had faded.
Joel didnât quite know what to do either. He felt at war with himself, a poorly docked ship being drawn out to the open waters against its will. It was getting harder to deny the increasing intensity of his pull to her. Not that it mattered, he still considered her a liar and she hated him with a passion that would never die. But seeing her with the kids, showing the humanity still left in her, had left him unsettled. It was like seeing a home he could never go back to.
âNo,â Henry said, having just been signing with Sam, âNo one is here. No oneâs gonna be here becauseâŚmy plan worked.
âSo much damn talkinâ,â Joel remarked from the front of the group.
âIâm just saying,â Henry continued, âI delivered. Make this right, go down the street, embankment behind the last houseâŚand weâre out.â
Y/n and Joel wanted to believe that they were home free, but theyâd seen more of the current world than anyone else in the party. Things that seemed too good to be true, almost always were.
âSo we cross the river and then what?â Ellie asked, âWhere ya gonna go?â
âDonât know yet,â Henry shrugged.
âWell, weâre goinâ to Wyoming,â Ellie announced.
Joel glared back at her, earning a light hit to the arm from Y/n, who glared right back at him.
âWhat?â Ellie replied, âItâs a huge state, it can fit two more people.â
âYeah,â Henry stretched the syllable, not any more keen on the idea than Joel, âMaybe we just call this one a success and say our fond farewells.â
Y/n drifted to walk alongside Joel, his stubbornness breathing a little bit of life back into her. âIf youâve got any happy pills left in your pocket,â she muttered low enough for only them to hear, âI suggest you take them.â
Joel shook his head, glancing out the side of his eyes at her. He couldnât decide if her silence or her snark was preferable.
âNo, heâll change his mind,â Ellie said to Henry, âTrust me. This is how it goes, heâs like,â she dropped her voice and added a twinge of an accent, ââNo, Ellie. Never, ever, ever happening.â
Y/n couldnât stop the snort before it escaped her, it physically jerked her body forward. When she looked up, Joelâs hardened stare was resting on her.
âThat supposed to be funny?â
âItâs hilarious,â Y/n smiled, still trying to contain her laughter, âAnd you know it.â
âAnd then Iâm like,â Ellie continued, ââIâm gonna ask you a million more times.â And heâs like-â
A gunshot flew past them, killing only the levity.
Joel and Y/n ran for Ellie at the same time, colliding with one another in a heap of arms.
âMove! Move!â Joel ordered, shoving both of them forward, âGo!â
The five of them dove for cover behind an abandoned car, crouching on the asphalt.
âWhere the fuck is that coming from?â Henry asked, shielding Sam with his body.
âShut up,â Joel ordered, peeking his head above the trunk of the car to scan the area. As soon as he was semi-visible, another gunshot hit one of the nearby vehicles.
Henry tried to get a look at the house where the fire seemed to be coming from, earning another close call.
âFuck,â he muttered, grabbing Samâs hand, âLetâs move. Letâs go.â
âHenry!â Y/n shouted through her teeth.
âWhat are you doinâ?â Joel yelled, not budging.
âGetting the fuck outta here,â Henry called back, barely making it to the other side of the road before another shot blew past them. He rushed him and Sam back to the first car, âWhat do we do?â
Y/n and Joelâs brains were working overtime, trying to figure out the best possible course of action. Joel, closest to the house he guessed the gunman was inside, peeked out once more and got another near fatal shot. He was right.
âAll right,â Joel breathed, âStay here.â
âWhat?â Y/n and Ellie exclaimed in unison.
Joel turned to them, addressing Ellie but drifting his eyes to Y/n at the end of each sentence. âIf you donât move, heâs not gonna hit you. Iâm gonna go around, try to get in the house through the back, and then Iâll take him out.â
âNo,â Y/n blurted out, âNo fucking way.â
âYeah, if you go out there, heâs gonna kill you,â Ellie agreed.
âItâs dark and he has shit aim,â Joel countered, âNobodyâs gonna kill me.â
âThen heâs gonna kill us,â Ellie replied.
Joelâs eyes flicked between the kid and the woman behind her. He addressed Ellie first, âDo you trust me?â
Hesitating, but eventually rolling her eyes and nodding, Ellie answered.
Joel looked up to Y/n, silently begging her to listen to him. Heâd trusted her when Ellie had revealed her immunity, now he needed her to do the same.
Y/n wanted to be unreasonable and illogical, to stew in her anger a little longer. But Joel hadnât failed them yet on their journey, this wasnât the place to start.
âYou go around the left,â Y/n countered, âIâll create a diversion so he wonât see you coming.â
âYou stay here,â Joel replied, his voice turning to steel.
It was the first time that Y/n didnât want to argue. She withdrew her pistol from her holster, âI wasnât asking.â
Joel was busting his ass trying to make sure she was safe and she was throwing herself into open fire to protect him. He felt sick to his stomach.
Y/n took Joelâs reluctant nod and mirrored it, hoping she looked more confidant than she felt. They both brushed a hand against Ellieâs arm, who was terrified to let the only two people she cared about run headfirst into danger.
Joel and Y/n crossed past one another, he grabbed her arm to stop her. The pain-stricken worry in both their eyes communicated all that they couldnât out loud.
They took up their positions on either end of the car, cocking their guns and drawing a deep breath. Joel nodded to Y/n, signaling for her to move.
Y/n jumped out from the car and ran for the one directly across from her. A gunshot kissed the air behind her, she slid into the asphalt behind the vehicle like it was third base. She could feel the fear creeping up her spine, threatening to break her, but breaking wasnât an option. Tessâ last wish rang in her ears; keep Joel safe.
Spotting the next car, in the row, she made a beeline for it, dodging two shots on each side of her. She kneeled behind the trunk, peeking out just enough to fire a distracting shot towards the house.
âCâmon, Joel,â she whispered.
Joel was making his way down the street, Y/n serving as the most perfect and unwelcome distraction. Every shot sent a cold shot of panic through him, terrified that the gunman was going to be too quick for her. Just before making it behind the house, he snuck a look over his shoulder and caught her racing across the street, dodging more fire. It urged him to move faster.
Y/n was getting closer and closer to the house, praying that Joel had made it. When she made a clean run to the next car, she assumed that heâd put a stop to the fight. A final shot rang out, but it had come from a different gun. Joelâs gun.
Y/n slumped against the car and exhaled, he was safe.
Joel felt grief pass over him, a drop of it trickling down his throat, as he grabbed the old manâs rifle. He was about to stick his head out the window and signal to Y/n that they were clear, until a sound caught his ear.
âAnthonyâŚAnthonyâŚâ a staticky voice called, Joel tracked it beside the old manâs body and found a walkie-talkie, âAnthony, hold them where they are.â
âFuck,â he muttered, rushing to the window, âRun!â
Y/n stood up, Joelâs voice reassuring her they were in the clear before she registered his words.
âRun!â
Y/n bolted back toward Ellie, Sam and Henry. In the near distance, she could hear the sound of a truck. The same one theyâd been dodging for the past day.
âRun!â Joel urged, watching Y/nâs shadow run straight towards the threat.
The truckâs headlights shone down the street, shining right on Y/n. She collided with Ellie, wrenching the girl ahead of her and racing back towards the house. Behind them, the fleet of trucks were beginning to plow through the rows of cars.
Determined, Joel started to fire at the truckâs windows, trying to take out the driver.
Blindly, Ellie and Y/n began to fire their pistols at the main truck after them. Without being able to take proper aim, their attempts failed, but they kept trying.
Ellieâs gun ran out of bullets as the truck began to gain on her. Y/n wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pushing her to go faster. Ellie tripped, bringing Y/n down with her. Y/n enveloped the girl in her arms, putting her body between the truck and Ellie.
At that exact moment, Joel had fired a perfect shot, taking out the driver and causing the truck to crash through the front of a nearby house. Heâd bought them mere seconds, a whole fleet of cars were behind them and their passengers were about to surround Ellie and Y/n.
âCome on,â Y/n urged, pulling Ellie to her feet, âMove.â
Theyâd barely made it two steps before they were thrown to the ground again by a blast. The crash had somehow started a fire and both the vehicle and the house surrounding it were set ablaze.
The smoke filled Y/nâs lungs, restricting her airways and letting dizziness to set in. The only clear thought ringing through her head was Ellie, save Ellie.
Joel watched helplessly as Ellie and Y/n lay on the ground. He could feel his heartbeat in his throat, waiting for them to get up. Henry, a godsend in that moment, darted out from behind a car and pulled them both to their feet.
Y/n stumbled back to the car Henry had sought as protection, blindly reaching for Ellie and making herself a barricade once again.
âYou okay?â Henry asked them both.
âYeah,â Ellie muttered, Y/n gave a breathless nod.
Up above the flames, Joel watched a group of rebels walk through the smoke with guns drawn on his window, calling out orders to raid the house. Theyâd found him.
âFuck,â he breathed, hiding behind the wall. Unlucky for them, Joel wasnât so easy to throw in the towel and lose his life.
Below, Kathleen surveyed the damage, strolling casually amongst the flames. âDead end, Henry,â she called, âGonna step on out? Save us some time?â
âIs that her?â Y/n whispered, Henry nodded in response.
âNo?â Kathleen asked, her tone was eerily even, âThatâs all right. Doesnât matter.â
Henry looked to Sam, who Y/n had an arm around, and knew what he had to do. âIâll come out,â he replied, âJust let the kids go!â
âNo,â Kathleen responded, âSorry. The girl is with the two who killed Bryan, donât think I donât know that the womanâs back there with you too.â
Y/n shut her eyes, the back of her head digging into the car. She knew sheâd die eventually, she woke every day faced with the possibility of death. But she wasnât about to die before she could get Ellie out west.
Joelâs blood ran cold at Kathleenâs words, his hands squeezing the rifle tighter. He had to fight every instinct to fire a bullet straight through her head.
âAnd Samâ Kathleen continued, âWell, Samâs with you.â
âYou donât understand,â Henry yelled.
âBut I do,â she said calmly, âI know why you did what you did. But did you ever stop to think that maybe he was supposed to die?â
âHeâs just a fucking kid!â Henry called back.
âWell, kids die, Henry. They die all the time.â
Y/nâs fear turned to shock and that shock turned to rage. Deep, bitter, twenty year old rage.
Joel watched carefully from his spot, feeling the anger swell in him.
âYou think the whole world revolves around him?â Kathleen continued her monologue, âThat heâs worth everything? Well, this is what happens when you fuck with fate.â
Henry turned to Y/n and Ellie, bracing himself for his own fate. âGet ready to take him, and run,â he instructed.
âNo,â Y/n argued, âIâm not-â
âYes,â he said, his voice like steel, âDo it.â
Y/n gave in, nodding and taking Samâs hands with Ellie. âYou stay in front of me at all time,â she instructed, reaching out for the girl, âIf I go down, you donât turn back.â
Ellieâs eyes widened, âBut-â
âYou donât turn back,â Y/n repeated, forcing her voice to sound strong.
âItâs time, Henry,â Kathleen gritted, her soft voice suddenly dripping with venom, âEnough!â
Henry took a few shuddering breaths before getting to his feet, hands raised in the air. Sam anxiously started to go after his brother, but Ellie and Y/n pulled him back to the ground. The three of them sat there, Y/n and Ellieâs pulses racing as they waited for the inevitable sound, their signal to move.
âIt ends the way it ends,â Kathleen said, her calm demeanor returning.
Y/n froze as she listened to Kathleen cock her pistol, squeezing Samâs hand a little tighter.
But the bullet never came.
Instead, there was a terrible creak from the totaled truck. Ellie scrambled to get a peek while staying hidden, Y/n held up a hand to her and poked the tip of her head out. Just enough to see the car sink into the wreckage of the burning house.
Joel aimed his rifle and came to the window, watching it all happen from above.
Three ominous seconds of silence.
And then they came.
Hordes of Infected came sprinting out of the sinkhole.
Henry rushed back to their spot, Y/n and him shoved the kids in between them and sinking against the car as far as they could. One of the Infected leapt on the hood, a well-timed bullet sinking into its skull.
Joel reloaded the gun, waiting for the next shot.
âCome on,â Henry called, the four of them got to their feet and took off in the direction of the embankment.
Ellie obeyed and stayed ahead of Y/n, who was frantically cocking her handgun. One Infected was chasing after them and she couldnât get her weapon ready in time.
Joel aimed at the creature trailing Y/n and fired. The body lurched forward, falling on Y/n and causing both her and Ellie to topple to the ground.
Somewhere in their fall, Y/n and Ellie had lost sight of Henry and Sam. Y/n kicked the dead body off of them and glanced up towards the house, she knew who was acting as their guardian angel. But that didnât mean she didnât have a job to do as well.
âCar,â Ellie yelled, having quickly crafted a plan in her head.
âStay low,â Y/n responded.
The two of them army crawled their way through the chaos, screams of both the living and Infected filling the air.
Joel tracked their movements, shooting down any Infected that even looked in their direction.
Ellie and Y/n ran the final distance and dove into the abandoned car through an open window. As Infected began to crawl across the behicle, banging against the windows, one of Joelâs bullets took each one out.
âGet to the back,â Y/n instructed.
The two of them crawled over the seats, taking shelter in the very rear of the vehicle. Ellieâs eyes were wide with terror as she watched the scene play through the dirty glass.
Joel saw them make it in, but his relief didnât last long. He watched as one of the Infected snaked through the window and into their car. His breath trembled, taking aim and realizing he couldnât do a damn thing to help them.
Y/n and Ellie heard the dreadful snarling together, their heads turning to watch the Clicker flip through the front seat of the car. Y/n raised her gun and took aim.
Click.
She was out of bullets.
Joelâs brain switched off, his primal instinct to protect taking over as he fired relentless shot after relentless shot, trying to take the Infected out.
The Clicker acrobatically made its way through the car. Ellie blindly reached for the door handle, whimpering in fear as she couldnât open it. Y/n kicked it with her boot and it swung out, she shoved Ellie roughly out of the car. Y/n slid out, slamming the door behind them and feeling the slam of the Clicker throwing itself against the window.
Joel had lost visual on them briefly, but saw the swing of the car door and how it was still rocking. Theyâd trapped it.
Somewhere in the noise, a childâs cry could be heard. Y/nâs eyes darted around them, finally spotting Henry and Sam trying to fend off a group of Infected underneath a car.
âHelp! Get the fuck away!â Henry screamed, kicking at one of the creatures, âGet the fuck off me!â
Ellie looked first to Y/n, who was already pulling out her knife from where she hid it in her boot, before they both looked up to where Joel was. Y/n could barely make out his face with the distance.
Joel looked down, knowing that they couldnât possibly be making eye contact from so far away, but knowing that they were on the same wavelength.
They had to work as a team.
âGo!â Y/n yelled, and they were off.
Joel shot with more precision than he ever had, this was the most heâd ever had at stake. As Y/n and Ellie moved through the crowd, he took out every Infected that were heading for them. He worked as a machine, but the terror he felt was the most human sensation heâd experienced in years.
Y/n shed her humanity, becoming more beast than woman, mercilessly ripping through the throats of any Infected that came near Ellie. She swung onto oneâs back, stabbing her knife into its head, and let the collapse of its body land her back on the ground.
Joel and Y/n worked seamlessly together, ground and aerial coming together to protect the one thing that couldnât be lost. Or in Joelâs case, two somethings.
Ellie and Y/n finally made it to Sam and Henry, there were two clickers still clawing at them. One dragged Henry out from underneath the car, Ellie got behind it and stabbed it. Y/n wrenched the Clicker attacking Sam backwards, staring into where its eyes would have been as she sliced through its heart.
A bullet whizzed past her head, landing in the monsterâs skull. Joel needed to be sure.
âCome on, come on,â Ellie helped their friends to their feet, âGo! Go!â
Y/n shoved Ellie in front of her again and they fled the chaos, climbing into the lawn of the house Joel was in.
âStop!â
The four of them turned to see Kathleen with her gun aimed at Henry, but her eyes flicking between him and Y/n. They didnât have time to fear for their lives, they clocked the same Clicker whoâd almost gotten her and Ellie creeping up an old piece of furniture behind Kathleen.
Kathleen heard the sound, turning around just as the Clicker shot through the air and latched onto her. They watched in terror as the creature claimed the resistance leaderâs life.
Joel hurried out of the house, running faster once he saw Y/n and Ellie. He stopped a second, watching as Kathleen lost everything sheâd fought so hard for, but didnât care so long as his people were safe.
âThis way now,â Joel yelled, grabbing Y/nâs arm to urge her forward, âMove!â
The group took off, leaving those who had sought to kill them to their fates. Joel and Y/n ran together, keeping one hand on each other the whole time. Their grudge was suffocating, choking under the weight of their undeniable devotion to one another.
ââââââââââââ
The motel the group landed was a haven to their weary eyes. They broke into one of the rooms and tried to get it through their heads that they were safe. Joel had made sure that no one followed them, they were miles away from any Infected. They could breathe.
Once Ellie and Sam had been squared away with food, they went into the bedroom and began reading Ellieâs collection of comic books. They were either bouncing back spectacularly fast or burying their fear.
Henry, Joel and Y/n sat out in the main room, trying to come down from what theyâd just been through. Since fleeing the hellish nightmare, Joel and Y/n hadnât left each otherâs side. She hadnât even bothered with putting space between them when she sunk down onto the floor. They were pressed against one another and neither of them minded.
âYou think theyâll be okay?â Henry asked, picking at a bit of his food and watching his brother from the next room.
Y/nâs eyes drifted to Ellie, she was growing more and more worried about the girlâs psyche. Sheâd seen so much in such a short span of time.
âYeah, I think,â Joel answered, âItâs easier when youâre a kid, anyway,â he met Henryâs stare with intention, âYou donât have anybody else relying on you. Thatâs the hard part.â
âWell,â Henry looked down at his food, âI guess weâre doinâ a good job then.â
Y/n and Joel both looked to the kids, Ellie was helping Sam to read one of the pages.
âWhatâs that comic book say?â Joel asked, ââEndure and survive?ââ
âEndure and survive,â Y/n repeated.
Henry chuckled, âThat shitâs redundant.â
Joel shook his head, this was as close as heâd come to laughing with another person. âYeah, itâs-itâs not great.â
Y/n gave a small smile, not quite to the point of being able to laugh about any part of the day.
Joel turned to look at her, drawing her gaze to him and focusing on the two quirked corners of her lips. It used to be his favorite game, making them rise until sheâd complain her cheeks hurt. Tonight was the first night that heâd been able to make her smile again, and the little bit of his old self that was on life support took a breath.
Y/n let her eyes drift across Joelâs face, resting in the way he returned it. It was a dangerous fucking place to be, but after what theyâd just gone through, she was too tired to fight her way out.
A loud laugh from Ellie snapped them out of whatever moment they were having.
âLook,â Joel turned to Henry, âI donât know exactly how weâre gettinâ to Wyoming, weâre probably walkinâ. But,â he stopped, still uncomfortable with the full spectrum of his emotions, âYou know, if you want to.â
âYeah,â Henry answered instantly, âYeah. UmâŚyeah, I think itâd be nice for Sam to have a friend.â
âOh, trust me,â Y/n smiled, looking on to Ellie, âYou wonât find anyone friendlier than her,â she glanced at Joel, âThen again, we donât set the bar very high, now do we?â
Henry laughed under his breath, even Joel couldnât stop himself from smirking. âNo, you donât,â Henry replied, âIâll tell him in the morning. New day, new start.â
âWeâre not getting anywhere if weâre carrying them on our backs,â Y/n remarked, dusting the crumbs off her jeans and getting to her feet.
Henry got up with Y/n and heading into Sam and Ellieâs room. He knocked on the door and began to sign to Sam.
âWhatever heâs saying,â Y/n pointed to Ellie, âSame goes for you. Real adventure starts tomorrow.â
Ellie rolled her eyes lightly as Y/n approached, letting her take the comic out of her hand and place it on the nightstand. âHey,â she said, âIs Joelâs brother like him? All grumpy and constipated?
âHe is,â Y/n started, a flood of pleasant memories hitting her, âWay more fun. Not a stick to be found up his ass.â
Ellie snorted, Y/n knew sheâd fall in love with Tommy in a minute. Everyone did.
Y/n ran a hand over Ellieâs head, they werenât close enough for a hug but she wanted the girl to know that she had someone that cared about her. If Joel was her protecter, Y/n wanted to be her comfort. The oasis she could run to in the desert.
âGet some rest,â she ordered.
âWhy?â Ellie cocked an eyebrow, âSo you and Joel can have more time to cuddle?â
Y/n knew sheâd be paying for her unconscious choices as long as Ellie was around to witness them. She lightly pushed her forehead, sending Ellie back on the bed in a fit of giggles.
âWill Livingston dies a slow and painful death if you ever bring that up again,â Y/n retorted, giving Ellie a pat on the leg after, âGoodnight.â
âNight,â Ellie called in a teasing tone.
Y/n stopped by Samâs bed, tapping his hip to get his attention. She signed âendure and surviveâ back to him, Sam nodded with a smile.
âPracticing,â Y/n beamed, earning herself a thumbs up, âGoodnight.â
She left the room before Henry, Joel hadnât moved from their spot against the radiator. The door had been open the whole time.
He looked at her with a raised eyebrow, ââStick up my ass?ââ
Y/n leaned up against the wall and crossed her arms, almost relaxed. âI said what I said,â she smirked, âShe called you constipated.â
Joel shook his head at her, fond memories of her and Tommy ganging up on him filing his head.
He wouldnât tell her that heâd heard the whole conversation.
Henry exited the room, shutting the door behind him. âI donât know about yâall, but Iâm exhausted,â he said, staking out the far right corner of the room for himself.
âYeah,â Y/n sighed.
Joel rose up from the ground, already dreading trying to do another bed time shuffle with Y/n. He glanced over at her, first spotting the blood seeping through her bandages.
âYour hand,â he said, crossing the space between them.
âHuh?â Y/n furrowed her brows, holding it up to examine it, âOh, shit. I didnât even feel that.â
Joel was hesitant to grab it, but was itching to fix it up. âAdrenaline,â he settled for.
âSo much for sleep,â Y/n grumbled, bending down and picking up her backpack.
Joel followed, setting the corner table back on its feet along with the two nearby chairs. Henry was already asleep in his corner. Joel sat down across from Y/n and watched as she pulled out the first aid kit. As she unpacked the supplies, his fingers began to twitch with nervous energy.
Y/n picked up on his fidgety state, stopping what she was doing to look at him. âAre you really that much of a control freak that you need to do this?â
Joel didnât know what he was, just that he needed assurance that she was going to be alright. The only satisfactory way to do that was to do it himself.
âFine,â Y/n scoffed, sliding the kit across the table to him, âHave at it.â
Joel unpacked the same supplies theyâd used yesterday as Y/n unwrapped her hand. He was glad sheâd taken extra gauze from his stash back in Massachusetts, they were running low.
âHow long do you think itâll take to get to Wyoming on foot?â Y/n asked as Joel grabbed an alcohol wipe. Sheâd already clotted, but the sites still needed to be cleaned.
He bristled, âA long fuckinâ while.â
âAnd are we measuring that in miles or kilometers?â Y/n asked, her tone deadpan.
Joel nearly smiled, gently rubbing the wipe over the bloody surface. Y/n hissed as it made contact with her skin, digging into her chair and drawing a deep breath after.
âKilled, like, four Clickers,â Joel decided to joke, never looking up from his ministrations, âCanât handle a little wipe.â
âSays the man who can navigate his way across the country, but couldnât explain a siphon to a fourteen year old,â Y/n remarked, matching his wit.
Joel peered up, a small smirk playing on his lips, mimicking the one on Y/nâs. This was the longest theyâd gone without fighting during a conversation. One shift could turn the almost peaceful moment to a shipwreck.
âWhat happened out there tonight?â Joel asked, his mind still spinning from anxiety.
âRan out of ammo,â Y/n answered, she know immediately what he was referring to, âPerfect timing, huh?â
Joel scoffed and ran a second alcohol wipe over her wounds. âYeah,â he muttered, unsure of what else to say.
âBut there was this weird guy hiding out in an abandoned house who took care of things,â Y/n remarked, her eyes traveling from her and Joelâs hands to his face.
Joel paused and met her stare, surprised that she was acknowledging his effort at all.
âThank you,â Y/n continued.
Joel shook his head, returning to his work, âYou donât need to thank me.â
âWould you rather me say âFuck off, you dick. I can take care of myself?ââ
âThat would fall in line with what you usually have to say,â Joel replied, reaching for the gauze pads.
Y/n nodded in reply, a smile pulling at her cheeks. She didnât know what the hell she was doing, only that she was traumatized, tired, and in need of someone to talk to. If that someone came in the form of Joel, then so be it.
Joel tried to focus on Y/nâs wound, breaking it down into steps. Sterilize, gauze, wrap. He couldnât get caught up on the fact that they were getting along. As benign as the it sounded, it was leaps and bounds ahead of where theyâd come from.
Y/n, on the other hand, had nothing to do but sit and wait for him to be done. She watched how precisely he placed the gauze pads, as if one inch off their assigned spots would cost her her life. It reminded her of how precise heâd been with his lips, his hands. Every touch had carried purpose, the ultimate goal to make her know how much he loved her.
This touch, so warm and gentle, felt the same to Y/n.
Much like the day before, it took a lot of effort on Joelâs part not to get caught up in the feel of Y/nâs hand against his. He wrapped a fresh strip of bandage around it, weaving the roll between her thumb and under her palm. Back at the house, watching her narrowly avoid Infected had choked him. Every five seconds, sheâd been brought to the edge of death, only for one of them to strike back at the very last moment. It had drained any and all energy left in Joelâs body, and had brought on a whole new set of questions.
If he were to lose her or Ellie at this point, what would it do to him?
He anchored the bandage down, sealing Y/nâs wound, and tried to escape the scenarios his mind was creating. They were alive, they were safe, and they would make it to Wyoming. If that was what he needed to keep repeating to himself the whole way west, he would.
âAt the risk of inflating your ego,â Y/n examined his work, âWell done.â
Joel didnât respond, he simply handed her the supplies to pack up. He was caught between a rock and a hard place, or rather, what he wanted and what he knew he couldnât have.
Y/n threw the kit back in her backpack and came back to where theyâd been. Joel was already kneeling down on the ground, removing and balling up his jacket. She didnât want to land herself in another situation where cuddling up to Joel was a possibility, she also didnât want to infringe on Henryâs personal space.
âYou mind keepinâ an ear peeled?,â Joel asked, it was like he could read her mind, âIn case I roll over on the wrong side again.â
âYeah,â Y/n replied, coming to sit beside Joel with just enough space between them. Close enough to protect, far enough away for clear minds.
Joel stretched out one arm just above Y/nâs head. It wasnât the closest theyâd been in the past day, but it was certainly the most intimate. Y/n was facing him, the top of her hair nearly grazing his forearm. Every signal in his brain told him to roll over, put another wall between them, but there was a stronger thought that cancelled the noise.
He simply didnât want to.
Y/n adjusted herself on her jacket and was left with nothing left to do but stare at Joel. The lines on his face were deeper, his features had grown sharper, yet somewhere underneath it allâŚshe could still see the man sheâd fallen in love with in the heat of an Austin summer. Perhaps that was what was playing with her mind the most; how she got glimpses of Joel as he was before morphing into the new version. She used to wonder what age would do to them and she knew that if Cordyceps had never mutated, Joelâs frown lines would be smiles lines. The skin underneath his eyes would wrinkle from deep laughter. And in the times where his brow would crease with concern, a single kiss from her would have relaxed the muscles.
It was enough to bring her to tears.
âWhatâs wrong?â Joel asked, his voice gruff but his words filled with concern.
It was all wrong. All of it. Everything that had happened to them. Everything the world had become. Risking their lives every day for a future that wasnât guaranteed.
It was all so horribly wrong.
âIâm just tired,â Y/n spoke past the lump in her throat, âReally fucking tired.â
Joel wanted to reach out, place a finger underneath her lashes to catch her tears before they fell. In another life, heâd have taken her in his arms and grazed his lips across her ear. Heâd have called her Rosebud and told her to sleep, that he wouldnât let anything hurt her.
But heâd lost the right to act on such feelings a lifetime ago.
âGet some sleep,â he replied, it was the only part of the urge he could listen to.
Y/n shook her head, smiling with sadness, âItâs not that kind of tired.â
Nothing else needed to be said. Joel understood those six words better than any other. His exhaustion went so far past his backaches or cracking knees. His soul was seeking rest that it would never find.
It wasnât lost on either of them that it took nearly dying for them to start drifting back to one another. The hate faded into background noise, or ceased to exist at all. They picked up their anger when they were safe, because it took effort. It took effort to stay mad, a fire requiring constant attention. But protecting one another was natural. At the end of the day, all that had transpired between Joel and Y/n would never come in the way of saving one another. Hate was a choice, care was an instinct.
Joelâs soft gaze traveled across Y/nâs face. âTry,â he encouraged, his voice barely above a whisper.
Y/n nodded, her eyes still resting on Joel. She knew if she stared at him a minute longer, sheâd no longer be able to choose hate.
Though sheâd never know it, Joel felt the exact same way. He was becoming weaker and weaker for her with each moment they spent together.
They didnât bid each other goodnight, they didnât even fall asleep at the same time, despite sharing the same exhaustion. Joel stayed awake a few extra minutes after Y/n drifted off. He watched her frown relax, her brows unclench and her chest rise and fall, keeping the same steady beat that used to lull him to sleep.
âââââââââ
Y/n had scooted closer in her sleep, her and Joelâs bodies still not touching but their breaths mingling together.
Had they awoken with the sunlight peeking through the blinds, strips of the warm glow across their eyes, urging them awake, they wouldnât have backed away. It would have been the first time in twenty years theyâd have woken up to one another. They wouldnât have been mad.
Instead, they startled awake to the sounds of screams.
Joel and Y/n sat up in time to see Ellie fall out of the door, a snarling Sam jumping on her and pinning her down. Henry woke not two seconds after them, barely able to register the sight.
Sam was infected.
Joel was the first to reach for his handgun, but Henry was quicker and yanked it away. He had it aimed at Y/n and Joel before they were even on their feet.
âNope, nope, nope,â he warned.
âJoel!â Ellieâs heartbreaking scream filled the room, âY/n!â
Joel and Y/n took one step in Ellieâs direction and Henry fired a shot at their feet. Joel shoved Y/n behind him, she clung to his arm.
âJoel!â Ellie shrieked again, begging for help from either adult, âY/n!â
Before they could have a coherent thought, it was all over.
Henry turned his gun on Sam.
He fired a single bullet.
Sam collapsed to the floor.
Ellie sat up with tears in her eyes.
Joel lowered his hands, but Y/n still kept a firm grip on him.
âEllie,â he breathed, his heart was racing, âAre you okay?â
The girl looked to her guardians, shocked and heartbroken.
They took a cautious step towards her, but Henry put a stop to it as he trained his pistol back on them. Joel threw his arm back out in front of Y/n, not knowing what the man might do.
Distraught seemed too small a word to describe the expression on Henryâs face. He was gutted.
Joel ensured Y/n was still fastened to him before he cautiously held out his hands to Henry, âEasy, easy, easy,â his voice was barely audible, âHenry, gimme the gun. Henry, gimme the gun.â
âWhat did I do?â Henry choked out.
Joel shushed him, as one would a wild animal on the verge of attacking.
âWhat did I do?â Henry asked again, âWhat-what-what did I do?â
âHenry,â Y/n nearly whimpered, her breath trembling as she did, âHenry, stop, please.â
Henry stared through his tears at his little brotherâs body, blood spreading across the floor, âSam?â
Joel urged with a new desperation as the realization deepened, âHenry, gimme the gun.â
âHenry, please,â Y/n let go of Joel, taking a calculated step forward, âI know. I know.â
âGimme the gun, Henry,â Joel continued.
Henryâs eyes, still focused on his brother, glazed over as he raised the gun to his temple.
âHENRY, NO!â Joel cried out.
Y/n rushed past Joel, âHENRY, I KN-â
It was too late.
As it happened, Joel jumped forward, wrapping his arms around Y/n and pulling her into him.
âNo!â Y/n screamed, she lurched forward as if she could still save him.
Y/nâs eyes were flooded with tears, her sobs tearing her apart so hard that they came out silent. When the noise finally came, it was a guttural cry that might come from a wounded animal. Y/nâs knees gave out on her, Joel caught her and helped lower her to the ground. He kept his arms tight around her as she wailed.
When Y/n came to, and she realized Joel was holding her, the rage reignited. âGet off me,â she yelled, clawing her way out of his embrace.
Joel let her go, shrinking back slightly at the sudden reaction. Ellie watched, consumed by terror as her rock crumbled under the weight of the trauma.
Y/n crawled towards Henry, avoiding the blood, and clung to his shirt. She wept into his still warm body, wishing that heâd have let her finish her sentence. It could have changed everything.
The three of them sat there, waiting for their grief to come to a managable level.
âWe gotta go,â Joel said eventually, the words feeling heavy in his mouth.
âWe canât leave them here,â Ellie muttered, wiping her sleeve across her eyes.
Y/n was sitting beside Henryâs body by then, waiting for him to breathe air that would never reach his lungs.
âGimme a minute,â Joel said, getting to his feet and moving mechanically out the motel room door.
Time moved slow and all at once to the three of them. Joel went into the maintenance closet and found two shovels, bringing them back to the room where nothing and no one had moved. Him and Y/n, trying to spare Ellie what little trauma they could, carried Sam and Henryâs bodies across the road and to a patch of grass. The two of them began to shovel shallow graves, burying their friends.
The job was nearly done, they were just patting the soil back down when Ellie returned. Sheâd retrieved the few posessions they still had, dropping Y/n and Joelâs coats and Y/n and Henryâs backpack at their feet. She came to kneel at Samâs grave, taking it in before setting his magnetic pad atop the dirt.
Standing back up with a weight no child deserved to carry, she turned to Joel, âWhich wayâs west?â
Joel looked off to his left and nodded, Ellie set off in the direction.
Y/n could feel herself slipping into a heavy numbness, a grief filling her that few could understand. She felt like she had one nostril, barely taking in oxygen, above the waters that slammed into her. But as soon as she saw Ellieâs handwriting, the words âIâm sorryâ written across the magnetic pad, she lost the fight.
She understood Henryâs fight.
She understood his decision.
And she understood his guilt.
She dropped her shovel where it was, picked up her jacket and slung her backpack over her shoulder, following Ellie and leaving Joel by himself. He was the last person she could stand to look at right now.
Joel watched her leave, any softness that had existed between the two of them a few hours ago had disappeared.
He leaned against his shovel, staring down at the dirt and Ellieâs makeshift headstone. Having done what theyâd just done, having known Henry and Sam, watching them interactâŚ.it gave Joel the answer to the question heâd pondered the night before.
If anything happened to Y/n or Ellie, he wouldnât know how to carry on.
And that was the most terrifying feeling he could have had, because heâd had it before.
Ellie had snarked, sassed and snuck her way into his heart. Y/n had always been there, his affection never fading over time despite her perceived betrayal. But heâd buried her, another name in the long list of people heâd lost over twenty years. To have her come crashing back into his life had been unexpected and unwanted. He couldnât stop himself from letting her consume his mind, just as she had the first time.
Now here he was, a child and the woman heâd loved relying on him, killing for him, and he wanted to run.
âLetâs go,â Ellie called out, she was even beginning to sound like him.
Joel startled, looking on to see Ellie and Y/n waiting for him. Y/n refused to look at him. They were right back to where theyâd begun their journey. Perhaps even further, sheâd met his gaze even after the ambush that had brought them back together. Something had shifted in her that Joel couldnât figure out, nor did he think it was best to look too deep.
He put on Henryâs backpack, feeling the weight of it, and slipped his jacket through the strap. He gave a parting glance to the brotherâs graves and headed off to join the women.
Despite their failure to keep their pasts hidden, the three of them had scars the others didnât know about. Intricate pieces of them that had made them who they were in the Cordyceps dominated world. But past the secrets, there was a loyalty too real to deny. They were too deep in to quit on each other. Trudging westward, with grief still fresh and fragile in their palms, they were all each other had.

ââââââ
July 1st, 2002. Austin, Texas.
Y/n had integrated perfectly into the Millerâs life. Sarah adored her, Tommy loved her, and Joel couldnât get enough of her. Heâd never admit it to Sarah, but he was thankful that sheâd taken matters into her own hands and snuck down to the hardware store that June day.
In the beginning of July, Sarah went away to a two-week summer camp. Joel and Y/n had seen her off on the bus, Joel fussing over whether or not she had everything sheâd need. He didnât do well when she was gone for more than a day, a combination of missing her dearly and parental worry. Y/n had made it her goal over the course of her trip to distract him as much as she could.
Theyâd made a dinner date at Joelâs house the day Sarah left, the first of fourteen that Y/n had to keep him busy. His days would be consumed by work, but his nights belonged to them. Y/n knocked on the front door of the house, carrying a six pack sheâd picked up on the way.
Joel hurried to the door, swinging it open and enveloping Y/n in a hug. She laughed, clinging to his neck as he literally dragged her into the house. Joelâs lips were on her the second the door shut.
âMissed you,â he mumbled between kisses.
âYou saw me, like, six hours ago,â Y/n managed to say.
âWay too long,â Joel smiled against her lips.
Y/n chuckled, âYeah, well, if I die from lack of oxygen,â she wiggled a hand between their smushed chests, âYouâre gonna miss me a whole lot more.â
Joel wrapped an arm around her neck, smiling so big his cheeks hurt. That was the effect Y/n had on him. Sheâd turned his curmudgeon qualities, plying them like clay until they were soft. He was a new man with her in his life.
âJoel,â she said softly.
âYeah?â He was barely taking in her words, focused on how her lips were starting to swell from his attention.
âWhatâs burning?â
It didnât register at first, then he remembered the food was still in the oven. âShit,â he muttered, letting her go to run back to the kitchen and save their dinner.
Y/n chuckled, kicking off her shoes and heading in to help him.
Joelâs attempt at a simple roast chicken and potatoes turned out slightly crispy, but good, all in all. Theyâd eaten it at the table, Joelâs hands stretched across the surface to hold Y/nâs.
After their meal, they retired to the living room. Joel turned on the stereo and fell onto the couch, Y/n laying her legs across his lap.
âWell, day oneâs almost over,â she said, âHowâre you feeling?â
Joel sighed, âShe called earlier when they got there. Sounded real excited.â
âAnd you could not sound happier about it,â Y/n chortled, âJoel, sheâs going to be fine.â
âI know that, itâs just,â Joel strroked his hand over Y/nâs calf, âItâs been me and her forâŚever. When sheâs off it justâŚâ
Y/n watched her boyfriend with soft eyes, waiting for him to say more.
âI know sheâs growinâ up, sheâs always been independent, but,â he paused staring down at his hands, âIt gets easier and easier for her every year to get on that bus. Makes me think about the day sheâll leave for good.â
âYou know that no matter where she goes,â Y/n offered, âSheâs always coming back here. She loves you too much.â
Joel gently smiled, his fingers brushing against Y/nâs leg. She always knew the right thing to say.
âAnd I donât know if youâve noticed, but she kinda loves me too,â Y/n smirked.
âYeah, well, thereâs a lot to work with there,â Joel winked.
Y/n giggled, her eyes drifting over Joelâs shoulder to the corner of the living room. An acoustic guitar sat propped up in a stand.
âYâknow, I still havenât heard you play,â she said, nodding to the instrument.
For as much as he loved music, he still got a little bashful about his talent. âI sound like everyone else,â he replied.
âYeah, nice try,â Y/n wasnât so easily discouraged, âPlay me something.â
Much like his daughter, there wasnât a lot Joel could deny Y/n. If it was going to make her smile, heâd gladly do it. He lifted her legs off of him and went to retrieve the guitar.
âDoes the audience have any requests?â Joel asked, settling back down beside her and fiddling with the tuning pegs.
Y/n tucked her legs into her chest, barely containing her grin, âSomething sweet.â
Joel finished tuning the guitar and took his position. He hadnât played for anyone other than Sarah in a very long time.
The first pluck of the strings relaxed them both, Joel settled into the piece quickly. Y/n watched his fingers dance up and down the string, a series of movements only he knew. It sounded like an old folk song, the kind that told the tale of doomed lovers torn apart by tragedy. She had enough musical knowledge to know it was in a minor key. Sweet, it was not, but it was brimming with passion, and the way Joel watched the strings so intensely only added to it. Y/n was taken aback by the simple beauty of him, pouring himself into the music.
When it was over, a few final notes slowing the tempo before stopping entirely, Joel looked over to Y/n, a whisper of a smile playing upon his lips. Their eyes connected, the ever present flame between them stretching the distance between their bodies. In that moment, Joel was thankful they were alone.
In the same set of seconds, Joel blindly set the guitar down to the side and Y/n surged forward, the two of them meeting in a heated kiss. Y/n held both of Joelâs cheeks in her hands while he maneuvered her on top of him, their lips never losing their connection. The sadness of the song had drawn them together, both needing to feel the fullness of each otherâs devotion to counter the loss that the notes had grieved. That wasnât them, they said with each touch, it could never be them.

September 28th, 2002. Austin, Texas.
Fall had hit Texas, as much as it could affect the south, anyway. Sarah and Y/n were in the backyard of the Milller home. Sarah had her first soccer game of the season that weekend and she wanted to get in some extra practice.
âOkay,â Y/n called from the goal, âDonât go easy on me.â
âYeah, right,â Sarah scoffed, she was never afraid to show the full force of her talent on the field. Faking Y/n out, she broke to the left before making a sudden right turn and shooting the ball through the goal.
âYes,â she exclaimed, pulling her fists down in celebration.
âAlright, alright, alright,â Y/n smirked, coming up beside Sarah as she did a little victory dance, âDonât get too cocky. Letâs work on your goalkeeping.â
Sarah grooved her way back to the goal, âOkay, but Iâm kinda spectacular at that too.â
âWell, we certainly donât need to work on your confidence,â Y/n remarked. Sarah had the same cockiness, reserved only for things she was truly great at, as her father.
Joel materialized then, coming through the back door and watching his girls from the deck. âHow we lookinâ?â
âToday, Taft Middle School,â Y/n replied, catching the ball with her heel as Sarah kicked it, âTomorrow, FIFA.â
Joel smiled proudly, both at Sarah and Y/n. Most women would have kept distance between them and their partnerâs child. Y/n had jumped in headfirst, determined to be there for Sarah as much as she wanted her. She was the feminine influence his daughter had been denied all her life.
âAlright,â Y/n announced, âGood?â
Sarah nodded, âGood.â
Joel saw an opportunity and couldnât pass it up. He carefully made his way down the steps of the deck, sneaking through the grass and up behind Y/n just as she was about to make her shot. As she wound her leg back, Joel wrapped his arms around her middle and lifted her into the air.
Y/n shrieked as she was swung around, âJoel!â
âSarah, steal it,â he yelled, smiling as Y/n wriggled in his embrace.
Sarah surged forward, avoiding Y/nâs flailing legs as she fought against Joel, and snatched the ball. She moved through the grass effortlessly and landed a perfect kick into the net.
Laughing heartily, Joel finally released Y/n back to the ground. He shared a high-five with his daughter as she bounded back to them.
âYou two are awful,â Y/n gave Joel a shove to his chest, her wide grin contradicting her words.
Joel hung an arm around his girlfriendâs neck, pressing a kiss to her temple. âCâmon,â he separated from Y/n and clapped his hands, âTwo-on-one, girls vs. boys.â
âWeâre gonna destroy you,â Sarah teased, coming to stand beside Y/n.
âI wouldnât expect anything else,â he quipped, standing in front of the goal.
The three of them stayed out until sunset, practicing plenty, but laughing more than anything.

December 25th, 2002. Austin, Texas.
The Millers didnât do anything spectacular for Christmas. A church service on the 24th, a simple dinner on the 25th, and presents.
It had been decided that both Tommy and Y/n would spend the night, it would make waking up and opening gifts easier than waiting for them to drive over. Tommy had taken the collapsable cot, his body was still used to military accommodations, while Y/n had gone for the couch. Joel and her were still hesitant to spend nights together, sleeping over at the otherâs only when Sarah was away at her own sleepovers. Christmas didnât feel like the time to test any boundaries.
Just past midnight, Y/n was still wide awake, tossing and turning on the sofa. There was a light snowfall happening outside and she hoped if she watched the flakes flutter through the air long enough, sheâd drift off to sleep. So far, sheâd had no such luck.
She took stock of the living room in its entirety. A fresh pine tree sat in the corner, a modest stack of presents surrounding the trunk. Two stockings were hung on the walls, Sarah and Joelâs names stitched across each. The room still faintly smelled like the batch of cookies her and Sarah had baked earlier in the evening. Even in the dark and completely silent, the house felt warm.
Footsteps down the stairs drew Y/nâs attention away from the decorations. She expected to see Sarah tiptoeing in to sneak a peek at the presents. Instead, Joelâs broad shadow entered the room.
âCanât sleep?â Y/n asked from the couch.
Joel shook his head, âNope.â
Y/n gave a small nod, pretending like the silence wasnât as full of asking as it was. Joelâs posture had purpose in it, he wasnât leaving until he got what he came for.
He tipped his head back towards the stairs, his eyes never leaving Y/nâs. âCâmon,â he said, his voice raspy with near sleep.
Y/n smiled to herself, throwing off her blanket and crossing the room to take Joelâs hand. The two of them tiptoed back up the stairs, trying not to wake Sarah or Tommy. Y/n knew the walk to Joelâs bedroom like the back of her hand, navigating in the dark made no difference. She certainly didnât need Joelâs hands on her hips to guide her, but she welcomed them anyway.
Once the door shut, their routine commenced. Joel went to his dresser, blindly reaching into one of his drawers and tossing Y/n one of his flannels. Y/n slipped it on over her t-shirt, the sleeves ending way past the tips of her fingers. They made their way to their dedicated sides of the bed, Joel closest to the door because he felt better being a wall of protection between Y/n and the world.
âWe have to get up before Sarah,â Y/n reminded him.
âWeâve got a 50% chance of makinâ it down before her,â Joel said, his hands gliding around her body to pull her into him, âChristmas morning, sheâs up at the crack of dawn.â
Y/n drew closer to Joel, resting one hand on his chest and the other gripping the back of his neck. Already, she could feel her body relaxing in a way the couch just couldnât coax out of her.
All the tension Joel had been carrying in his spine went lax the moment Y/nâs fingers grazed his skin. He was finding it harder and harder to sleep without her.
âThank you,â she said out of the blue.
âFor what?â Joel asked.
Y/nâs fingers danced along the line between the ends of his hair and the base of his skull. âFor letting me be a part of all this,â she answered, her voice barely above a whisper.
Joelâs heart swelled, he took one of her cheeks into his hand and let their lips drift towards one another. Six months in, and he wasnât sure if he could fall any harder in love with Y/n. She wasnât just his, she was theirs. She was a permanent fixture in their home, the house a little less bright when she was absent from it. She had become a confidante to Sarah, a best friend to Tommy and everything to Joel. How could he not want her in every part of their lives?
ââM afraid youâre stuck with us, Rosebud,â Joel smiled after he pulled back, brushing his thumb across her cheekbone.
âNo place Iâd rather be,â Y/n returned his grin.
Pressing one final kiss to her forehead, Joel tucked Y/n against his chest, his chin resting atop her head. She let her hand drift around to his back, her fingers spreading across the expanse as she tried to hold as much of him as she could. They fell asleep within minutes, the gentle snowstorm outside creating beauty that would only enhance the magic of Christmas for the Miller family.
âââââââââ
2023. Kansas City, Missouri.
âEye on me! Eyes on me!â
Joelâs eyes slid to the other side of the room, to the man with the barrel of his gun pointed at Ellie. Her and Y/n both had their hands raised high.
âYou donât have to worry about what to say,â the young man said, âWe donât wanna hurt you. We wanna help you.â
Joel watched him, he was shifting his weight between both feet, no expert marksman was that nervous to threaten someoneâs life. Joel felt significantly better about his chances.
âOkay.â
âOkay, umâŚâ the young man paused, âI donât know what the next step is with something like this, but if I lower my gunâŚwe didnât hurt youâŚso you donât hurt usâŚright?â
Joel stared him down, âThatâs right.â
âThatâs a weird fuckinâ tone, man,â their enemy replied.
âThatâs just the way he sounds,â Ellie interrupted, first looking to the stranger and then back to Joel, âHe has an asshole voice. Joel, tell him heâs okay.â
Joel stared, nearly a hint of a smirk at his lips, âEverything is great.â
âDudeâŚâ Ellie muttered.
âWeâre not going to hurt you,â Y/n intervened, looking to the man, âNow drop the fucking guns before I second guess myself.â
âThat wasnât any better,â Ellie exclaimed.
âFuck! Okay, listened,â the stranger started, his voice practically trembling, âIâm gonna trust you.â
He then stopped to signal something to the child, Y/n recognized it as ASL. They communicated something none of them could understand.
âBut if any of you guys try anything,â the man kept his gun aimed at Ellie, nodding to Joel and Y/n, âYeah? Yeah?â
âYeah,â Ellie whispered, her heart was in her throat.
The child backed away from Joel and Y/nâs mattress, his aim still firmly locked onto them. Y/n was trying to get her heartbeat back down to a normal range.
âCan I sit up?â Joel asked, his voice was still on edge.
âYeah,â the stranger conceded, âSlow. Get up slow.â
Joel obeyed, rising to a seated position without any rush. He raised his hands, the left one grazing Y/nâs injured right. Shockingly, the fleeting touch made her feel a little less nervous. If Joel was good for nothing else, at least he was a good fighter. They could get out of this easily, if necessary.
âWho are you?â Joel asked.
âMy nameâs Henry,â the now-named stranger answered, âThatâs my brother, Sam. Iâm the most wanted man in Kansas City. Although right now,â Henry finally lowered his gun, âMy guess is youâre running a close second. Her too.â
Y/n and Joel looked to one another, that ambush was going to come back to bite them in the ass, one way or another.
âHenry,â Y/n spoke up, lowering her hands and laying them palm up in her lap, âWeâre gonna need a lot more than that.â
The five of them ended up huddled around a lantern, snacking on their dwindling food supply and waiting for the rest of the story to unfold. Henry had made it clear that he had to get some food in his brother first. It had been Ellieâs idea to share what they had left.
âWhereâd you get these?â Henry asked, chewing on a cracker.
Y/n and Joel had been watching Sam, digging into what theyâd shared with him as if he hadnât eaten in days. There was a real possibility of it, or something along the lines. They both wordlessly handed what was left of their portions to the boy, who in return, signed something to his brother.
âHe says âthank you,ââ Henry relayed, âIâm guessing you donât have much so, this means a lot.â
âHow old is he?â Ellie asked.
The brothers talked amongst themselves, with Henry answering, âHeâs eight.â
Ellie nodded, âCool. Iâm Ellie.â
âY/n,â Y/n spoke up, wanting to try and make the child feel as comfortable as the circumstances would allow.
Henry spelled out the names for Sam, who responded with a sign that both Y/n and Ellie assumed meant âcool.â
Ellie smiled before smacking Joel on the knee and waiting for him to introduce himself.
âIâm Joel,â he swallowed his last bite, âLook, you ate, we didnât kill each other, letâs call this a win-win and move on.â
Henry dusted off his hands, âWell, Iâm betting that yâall came up here to get a view of the city and plan a way out. And when the sunâs up, Iâll show you one.â
Joel and Y/n thought it over separately before glancing over at one another. If Henry hadnât killed them by now, he wouldnât. He already knew their supply was low, the only reason he was sticking around was because he needed something from them.
âOkay,â Y/n answered for them, earning a quick turn and glare from Joel, âSam can take our bed. As soon as morning hits, you show us the route.â
Henry scoffed, âJust like that youâre gonna trust us?â
âI know the eyes of a liar, Henry,â Y/n leaned forward, resting her elbow on her knee, âAnd you donât have âem. You werenât even going to kill us in the first place, and you certainly werenât gonna make him do it.â
Joel was ready to jump in at any second, but Y/n spoke with such precision and intention, he couldnât come up with any reason to stop her.
âSo how about we get some sleep,â Y/n continued, âAnd tackle this tomorrow?â
Henryâs eyes focused in on Y/n, someone as calculated as she was was either the most honest person on the planet or so calcuating and conniving, they could deceive the worst of humanity.
âOkay,â he landed on trust, âFirst thing.â
Ellie and Sam settled onto their makeshift mattresses, while the adults sat against the walls of the apartment. Henry on one side, Joel and Y/n on the other.
âWhat happened to equals?â Joel asked, the edge to his words undercutting the softness of their volume.
âWould what you have said been any different?â Y/n countered, watching as Joel tried to come up with an answer that differed from hers, âExactly.â
The two of them stayed close to one another, without actually touching. Y/n was still slightly rattled from waking up with Joelâs hand over hers.
âAlthough my fucking neckâs gonna be messed up all day,â Y/n mumbled, trying to find a comfortable position to rest her head against the wall.
While they trusted an already sleeping Henry enough not to kill them, instinct told both Y/n and Joel to not leave themselves in such a vulnerable positon again. Sleeping sitting up was the only option that would allow them a little bit of rest.
And Joel hated what he was about to offer.
âYou canâŚâ he pointed to his shoulder, âIf you want.â
âI donât wantâ Y/n quickly replied.
Joel sighed in exasperation, âForget I offered.â
He crossed his arms and settled against the wall, shutting his eyes and shutting down his momentary lapse into generosity.
Y/n inhaled, trying to get over herself. She was getting way too much up close and personal time with Joel to feel comfortable. But it was either another dose or a hideous day of lingering discomfort without the blessing of Ibuprofen.
She awkwardly scooted closer to him until their thighs were touching, causing Joel to open one eye. He looked down at their parallel bodies and back to Y/n.
âJust donât grab my hand,â she grumbled, laying her head down on his shoulder and praying that her stomach stayed unaffected.
Joelâs body stiffened as she rested on him, a quick shot of adrenaline running through his extremities. He wanted to pretend to be unmoved, unbothered by her touch, but it was impossible. He would never fully be without affection for the way she felt against him.
âGo ahead,â Y/n said, sensing his discomfort but mistaking it for simply physical.
Joel hesitated a few seconds before shaking himself out of his doubt and resting his head on top of Y/nâs.
When the weight of Joelâs skull fell on hers, Y/nâs natural instincts took over and she almost, almost, tucked into him more. It was by the grace of God that she caught herself before she did it. No matter how hard her mind loathed him, her body would have accepted him back in a heartbeat.
The two ex-lovers sat against the wall, still trying to convince themselves that they were miles apart.
âââââââââ
Just as the night before, they woke up so much closer than intended.
Y/n had fully curled into Joel, snuggling into his chest at some point during their glorified nap. When she woke up to the rough scratch of his flannel agaisnt her cheek, drowsiness did not immediately remind her she was in the year 2023. In her sleep-adled state, it was winter of 2002.
When consciousness pulled her back to the land of the living, she lightly groaned. Why were their sleeping selves making everything so complicated?
Y/n rolled off of Joel, causing him to sharply inhale. He blinked a few times, rubbed a hand over his face and evaluated the room. Henry was still asleep, but Sam and Ellie were already awake and sitting on the edges of their beds.
Y/n was beside him, at least twelve inches of space between them.
âI do anything in my sleep?â Joel asked.
Y/n shook her head, sucking on her bottom lip, âNope.â
Joel wasnât buying it, âThen whydya got that look on your face?â
âI know why,â Ellie teased in a sing-song tone.
Y/n let out two loud claps, startling Henry awake, and got to her feet. âRise and shine, time to work.â
Joel stayed on the ground, watching how fast she moved around the room. Something had happened and it had messed with her. He ran a hand over his right shoulder, noticing that it was warm when the rest of him felt cold. He peered back over at Y/n, rifling through her backpack to find Ellie and Sam breakfast. He watched how she crouched down and handed the kids what was assuredly the lionâs share of her rations. How she held up a questioning thumbs up to Sam, who in return, smiled and copied the gesture. How she cared. She still cared so much.
It was killing him.
But there were bigger things to worry about than the stirring in his heart for the woman who perhaps, hadnât changed that much at all.
ââââââââââââ
Once fed and watered, the group of five headed a few floors up to the apartment buildingâs conference room. Henry had promised it had the best view of the city.
âWelcome to Killa City,â he announced, showcasing the place in daylight through the massive windows.
âNo FEDRA,â Joel observed.
âNot as of ten days ago, no,â Henry replied.
âWe always heard KC FEDRA was-â
âMonsters? Savages?â Henry finished for Joel, âYeah, you heard right. Raped and tortured and murdered people for twenty years.â
Y/n looked down at her shoes, âFucking hell.â It was stories like Kansas City that were one of her reasons for joining the Fireflies.
âAnd you know what happens when you do that to people?â Henry continued, âThe moment they get a chance, they do it right back to you.â
âBut youâre not FEDRA,â Joel stated.
Henry paused before answering, âNoâŚworse. Iâm a collaborator.â
Joel shook his head, âI donât work with rats.â
Y/n wasnât so quick to walk away, Henry had too much of a heart it seemed to be a true collaborator. He had a story.
âYeah, you fucking do,â Henry said, âToday you do, âcause I live here and you two donât. Thatâs how I followed you here. I know this city and Iâm gonna help you out.â
Joel watched Henry as he spoke, trying to see through him, âWhy help us?â
âI saw what you two did,â Henry answered, âThe way you killed those men. Now I know where to go, but I donât know how to make it through alone, not if itâs just Sam and me.â
âYou seem capable enough,â Joel replied, âYouâre armed.â
âYouâre wrong and wrong,â Henry said, âNever killed anyone. And pointing an unloaded gun at you was the closest Iâve ever come to being violent.â
Y/n nodded, no one let their hand shake that much when holding a loaded gun.
âSo thatâs the deal,â Henry stated, âI show you the way, you clear the way.â
Joel didnât need anyone else slowing them down or making them more noticeable. And partnering with Henry would only make them bigger targets.
At the table behind them, Ellie and Sam were seated, reading from Ellieâs pun book. The energy was divided down the room; the grown-up side was deathy heavy while the kidâs side was warm and uplifting.
âHavenât heard that in a long time,â Henry smiled, watching his little brother laugh.
Joel turned back to the window as he tried to put distance between him and the moment. Y/n glanced over at him, watching as the cogs in his mind turned. Her mind was already made up, it would have been wonderful if they could avoid an argument.
âSo howâre we getting out?â Joel relented, turning to Henry.
Henry fetched a piece of paper from one of the drawers, office supplies had never been in high demand post-pandemic. He sketched out a square, writing down the names of the roads that cut through the city.
âHighwaysâŚâ he pointed to one section, âDowntown,â then to the other, âUs. This whole area belongs to Kathleen.â
âAnd she isâŚ?â Y/n asked, standing between Joel and Henry.
âLeader of the resistance,â Henry answered, âYou can see the way weâre bounded by highways. They got people posted all around the inside perimeter. If we get close, we get caught. No question.â
âSo how do we get across?â Ellie asked.
Henry banged a fist against the table to get Samâs attention, signing something to him after. Sam went to drawing on his magnetic erase pad, Joel wasnât made to feel any better about a kid being involved in the planning of their escape.
Sam held up his pad, having written the word âTunnelsâ on it.
Henry snapped his fingers, âBoom.â
âKansas City has a subway?â Joel asked.
âNo,â Henry answered, âBut they do have maintenance tunnels. Thereâs a bunch of buildings all put up by the same developers. And they share these tunnels, includingâŚâ he pointed down to a specific section of his sketch, âA bank building here,â he began to draw their route, âSo we enter the tunnels here, travel underground, and pop up here. Westside North. Residential. Thereâs an embankment on the other side of the houses. We head down, pedestrian bridge over the river,â Henry dropped his pencil, âFree as a bird.â
âYouâre right,â Joel admitted, âItâs a great plan. So what do you need us for?â
Henry hesitated a moment, âYou notice anything strange about this city? I mean, other than the strange shit youâve already seen?â
âNo Infected?â Ellie guessed before Y/n and Joel could.
âOh, thereâs Infected,â Henry replied, âJust not on the surface. FEDRA drove them underground fifteen years ago, and never let them come back up. Itâs the only good thing those fascist motherfuckers ever did.â
Joel looked between Y/n and Ellie, âSo you want us goinâ into a tunnel?â
âEveryone thinks that itâs full of Infected,â Henry quickly corrected, he sensed Joelâs doubt, âIncluding Kathleen, which means that weâre not gonna be running into any of her people. But you see, what I know isâŚitâs empty.â
âYou know this?â Y/n questioned, âYouâve seen it? With your own eyes?â
âNo,â Henry replied.
Joel took a deep breath, hands on his hips again. Y/n sighed and rested her elbows on the table. Henry was losing them both.
âBut the FEDRA guy that I worked with told me that itâs clean,â the young man continued, âCompletely clean. They cleared it out. All of it.â
âHow long ago?â Y/n asked, shutting her eyes as if it could shut out their problems.
âLike,â Henry shrugged, âThree years ago.â
Joel scoffed, glancing to Ellie as if asking if she was believing this either.
âOkay, maybe thereâs one or two,â Henry quickly said, âBut you can handle it.â
âYouâre making this sound a whole lot simpler than it is,â Y/n responded, looking to Joel, whose eyes were already expectantly waiting on her. âWe need a minute.
Y/n pushed open the glass doors, bringing them outside the conference room and giving them a sliver of privacy.
Joel pointed a finger behind them, âYou still feel good about this?â
âNot exceptionally, no,â she answered truthfully, âBut we donât exactly have a lot of other options, now do we?â
âIf this guyâs gonna endanger our lives more than if we were on our own,â Joel argued, âThen weâre better off-â
âFighting our way through a city weâve never been in with targets the size of Texas on our backs?â Y/n finished for him, âLook, I donât wanna go down there either. But weâre guaranteed a very slow, very painful death if we go it alone. Iâd rather have allies and stand a chance, at least.â
Joel wanted to fight tooth and nail, but he knew she was right. Sheâd always had a talent for being right.
âPlus, itâll give you plenty to lord over Tommyâs head when we get to Wyoming,â Y/n quipped, her mouth still frowned but her eyes were lit up with humor.
Joel huffed, heâd have laughed if the situation wasnât so dire. The thought of seeing his brother and his ex together again was a sight he didnât think heâd ever be ready to see.
Without another word, and a silent concession from Joel, the two of them marched back into the conference room where the debate was still being held.
Henry pointed to Ellie, âShe says yâall fought off two Clickers. Is that true?â
Joel and Y/n uncomfortably shifted, the dread sweeping over them.
âAnd youâre still alive,â Henry stated, âYou see? Youâre the right people. If it gets bad down there, we turn around, and run right back out the same way we came.â
Joel was about one poorly constructed sentence away from giving the whole idea up, âOh, thatâs your great plan?â
âNo, thatâs my dicey-as-fuck plan,â Henry fired back, âBut as far as I can tell, itâs our only shot.â
Sam signed something to Henry.
âTheyâre saying,â Henry narrated as he signed back, âTheyâre going to help us escape,â he turned back to the party, âRight?â
Y/n rolled her eyes, âThat was a low fuckinâ blow, man.â
Henry didnât seem bothered at all by the manipulation.
Joelâs jaw twitched as he thought it all over. Y/n could practically feel his unease. She craned her neck back, muttering more into his body than at him, âLesser of two evils.â
With every fiber of his being, Joel wanted to fight. But instead, he let his hands fall against his legs, admitting defeat.
âââââââââ
The team got across the city with minimal close calls, every once in a while thereâd be a truck or patrol group to avoid. They got to the bank building intact and only slightly out of breath.
âWe need to get outta sight,â Joel said, every entrance/exit of the place was structured in a glass wall.
âUh, I-I-I think itâs this way,â Henry pointed towards one of the halls, the rest of them following.
They trailed through the building till they hit a back door, hopefully leading to the tunnel entrance. Joel and Y/n entered it cautiously with their guns drawn.
âThis should be it,â Henry announced, âYou ready?â
Joel looked to Ellie, âGet your gun out.â
Rebelling in her own small way, once again, Ellie pulled out the gun from her jacket pocket. At this point, Joel wasnât surprised in the least that she wasnât heeding his advice. Him and Y/n marched forward regardless and took the lead. They entered through another door, delivering them into the tunnel system.
âYou see?â Henry proved, âItâs empty. The plan is good.â
Joel and Y/n quickly shushed him. ââThe plan is good?ââ Joel repeated, âWeâve been down here two seconds. We donât know anything.â
Henry looked to Ellie, âYour dadâs kind of a pessimist.â
âIâm not her dad.â
âHeâs not my dad.â
âHeâs not her dad.â
Joel, Y/n and Ellieâs protests overlapped.
âJust point your light forward,â Joel instructed, tightly gripping his own, âAnd be ready to run.â
Y/n steadied her breathing and began to move beside Joel down the underground maze.
They walked for around an hour, snaking down the sets of tunnels, holding their flashlights and handguns as if they were life itself. Eventually, they turned down a hall with childâs art painted all along it. The door was even painted as castle. All of them examined the walls in quiet confusion.
Sam bounded forward, wanting to go through and explore. Joel threw his hand out to stop him, âNo.â
Y/n tucked her flashlight under her chin and gripped her pistol, sharing an affirmative nod with Joel that they were ready. He slowly turned the doorknob and it creaked open, revealing a room that lookedâŚcivilized.
The whole place looked like a daycare center. There were toys scattered throughout storage bins, art and books against the walls, small cups, and a faded soccer goal painted across one of the cinderblock walls.
âI heard about places this this,â Joel commented, taking stock of their surroundings, âPeople went underground after Outbreak Day. Built settlements.â
âWhat happened to them?â Ellie asked.
âMaybe they didnât follow the rules and all got infected,â Joel replied.
While Ellie and Sam sat down, playing with a few of the toys, Y/n, Henry and Joel scanned the room. Whoever had been living there, theyâd been gone long enough for a layer of dust to settle across everything.
âHey,â Joel called to Ellie who was being a little too loud, âKeep it down. Weâre not out yet.â
âAh, câmon,â Ellie groaned, âCan we just rest here for a while? Thereâs, like, actually shit to do here.â
âWouldnât be so bad to wait the light out a bit,â Henry agreed, âSafer in the shadows when we pop back out on the other side.â
Joining Ellie and Henry, Y/n tilted her head in a slight shrug to Joel. It was a smart decision and he was just going to have to get over himself.
Joel shrugged back to the group, raising an eyebrow and going back to checking out the room.
Ellie and Sam occupied themselves by reading comic books and messing around with some of the toys. Henry, Joel and Y/n rested at a table, putting their feet up without actually relaxing at all. At some point, Ellie and Sam switched to kicking a soccer ball around on the makeshift field. Y/n watched carefully as Ellie interacted with the boy, she was so caring and patient. Sheâd confided that she didnât have any brothers or sisters, but the glow coming from her radiated big sister energy.
Y/n scooted her chair back and walked across the room. âCan I join?â
Ellie enthusiastically began to switch the ball between her feet, trying to fake Y/n out. Y/n rotated to stand alongside Sam at the goal.
âThatâs not fair,â Ellie argued, âThereâs two of you.â
âOh, so youâre saying you canât do it,â Y/n teased.
Ellieâs determination set in, jumping slightly in place before kicking the ball in between Sam and Y/nâs legs quicker than they could stop it.
âOh, shit,â she exclaimed, shooting her hands into the air.
Sam and Y/n shared a laugh before Y/n got down on her knees, âCan you teach me something?â
Sam watched her lips and nodded, showing her a sign. To her, it looked like he was pulling something out of his mouth, before bringing his two thumbs up and splitting their directions at his chest.
Y/n mimicked it, âWhat does this mean?â
âOh, thatâs from Savage Starlight,â Ellie exclaimed, copying the gesture with them, ââEndure and survive.ââ
The three of them continued to sign it over and over. It seemed to make both Ellie and Sam extremely happy, which meant Y/n would do it as many times as they wanted.
Joel and Henry watched from their seats. To say Joelâs heart ached would have been an understatement. His soul was barely holding together, a new piece of it dying off every day. But Y/n and Ellie had somehow kept the last few from withering. It was so subtle, he hadnât even figured the phenomenon out yet. He was barely self-aware. But seeing Y/n, crouched down on the floor with the kids, still with the innate need to make the world around her better, he came to fully realize his thought from earlier in the day.
She was still his Y/n.
Smiling, laughing, loving, caring, kinder than the world deserved. Underneath all the anger was the woman he had loved with all his heart.
And that fucking terrified him.
As Y/n made her way back to them, Joel pulled himself back to reality, switching gears and channeling his energy into focusing on the kids. Specifically Sam. He was eight years old and in survival mode. No child deserved that. It was making him rethink his stance on the things heâd said earlier.
âIf you were collaboratinâ to take care of him,â he said to Henry, âIâŚI shouldnât have save what I said. I donât know your situation. And Iâm not sayinâ they should let it go, but all things considered, seems kinda cruelâto send a whole army after you for that.â
Henry waited a few seconds, Ellieâs cheers filling the silence, before speaking. âYou know, I wasnât, uhâŚexactly telling you the truth beforeâŚabout me not killing someone.â
Y/n and Joelâs attention turned to him exclusively.
âThere was a man,â Henry began, âA great man. You know, he was never afraidâŚnever selfishâŚand he was always forgiving. Have you ever met someone like that? Kinda man youâd follow anywhere.â
Y/n tensed up, forbidding her eyes from flicking to Joel.
âI mean, I wanted to. WellâŚI wouldâve,â Henry gathered strength for the rest of his story, âYeah, but, uhâŚSam, he, uh, he got sick. Leukemia,â he scanned Joel and Y/nâs somber expressions, âYeah, anyway, umâŚthere was one drug that worked and, whoa, big shockâŚthere wasnât much left of it, and it belonged to FEDRA. And if I wanted some, it was gonna take something big. So I gave them something big. That one great man. The leader of the resistance movement in Kansas City. And Kathleenâs brother.â
Understanding washed over Joel and Y/n. All the firepower, the tanks, the trucks, it all made sense.
âYeah, so, you still think they should take it easy on me?â Henry asked rhetorically, âOr am I the bad guy?â
Y/n stayed silent, weighing morals against necessity. Joel pulled his lips down, barely shaking his head before Henry cut off what he would have said, âI donât know what youâre waitinâ on, man. The answerâs easy. I am the bad guy because I did a bad guy thing.â
âBut you did it to keep him alive,â Y/n spoke up, âYouâd go to the ends of the earth for him. Thatâs not evil, thatâs family.â
Henryâs eyes cut through the space between Joel and Y/n, âYou two get it,â he nodded toward Joel, âYou may not be her father, but you were someoneâs. See, I could tell.â
There it was. The big, dreadful, terrible thing that Joel and Y/n had gotten this far without talking about. It was the unspoken wound, the one deep enough to kill yet shallow enough that it didnât show. It was a constant phantom pain in both their chests and it broke them all over again to have it brought up.
âYou too,â Henry smiled at Y/n, nodding to Ellie, âThat is, if sheâs not yours.â
Y/n didnât think the blade could slide any deeper into her heart. She had been something to someone once, and it was as much a part of her still as the air she breathed.
âUh,â Y/n tearily began, clearing her throat quickly, âNo, sheâs not mine.â
