She studied African dance, and her big break came when she appeared opposite Sammy Davis Jr. in "Golden Boy" on #Broadway in 1964. She was nominated for Broadway's 1975 Tony Award as Best Actress (Musical) for "Doctor Jazz." Lola gained international fame while touring Italy and starring in two Italian movies. She was also briefly married (1971-75) to Feliciano "Butch" Tavares of the Tavares Brothers. In 1979 she became the highest-paid entertainer in Las Vegas, thus earning her the title "First Lady of Las Vegas". Her life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the 80’s. She turned to religion for comfort and solace, and began touring much of the time as a Christian evangelist.
