I think there needs to be a discussion, or at least rather a mass reflection in the LIOMOQAI communities about nuance, or the lack there of. I will be the first to admit that I am guilty of this as well, we all are. Black and white thinking is common amongst all beings, but especially those with neurodivergencies.

Long post ahead

To elaborate:

I see ppl say they wish there was more of a culture surrounding microlabels, that they could get as well known as the most 'common' labels, wanting art and music to be made for them, etc etc. And I agree, I think it'd be cool to see that kind of stuff

At the same time though, I see the sentiment of people wanting the opposite? Like being gatekeepy with all of their terms to the point where anyone else identifying with them seems discouraged.

This doesn't apply to labels that are exclusive to specific cultures, I mean in a general sense. This mindset seems kind of antithetical to the whole community thing

But I understand that not everyone necessarily joins mogaiblr for the sense of 'community.' Everyone has their reasons, I'm not gonna criticize someone for only doing this for themselves. (I also exclusively coin self indulgently unless I'm making a term for a friend) The nature of label coining is personal after all, so some people just want it to stay personal. Even so, we're still on a public site. With other people. Due to the nature of it there is no way we're gonna be able to perfectly control what everyone else does with our terms.

I could make a comparison to artists with their art but even then I don't think it's really the same thing. When you make a label, all you're really doing is putting a name (sometimes a flag) to a pre-existing experience. You don't necessarily.. own it. You could hold credit over the flag design but I think it's odd to get upset over someone else claiming words that really anyone could put together. (Even with the flag aspect, I feel like that could start steering into the 'stealing art styles' stuff I see in the art community. which makes no sense)

I just think being this cagey(? not sure how else to word it) about it is going to lead to others not wanting to use labels or even discuss them out of fear of being criticized for it. Plus I've noticed ppl on here get aggressive or defensive about stuff like, real quick. I'm not 'defending' recoining but I can't say I would blame someone for not wanting to be directly associated with a term made by someone that seems super hostile. (And I'm aware that a flag/term isn't an extension of the coiners beliefs, but still, some people would just rather not deal with the potential stress)

that's just how I see it though. I haven't been on tumblr for that long, so I don't know the 'culture' or whatever that surrounds this site. I don't really tend to post on social media that much either, my activity is mainly on discord i'd say

i’ve seen a lot of people within mogai, alterhuman, and similar communities be very casual with their usage of the word “mutt” and i understand this is likely due to ignorance on the fact that it is in fact a racial slur.

how is it a slur? when used to refer specifically to humans or those in human bodies, it is used derogatorily specifically towards mixed race individuals. while yes it refers to a dog or any animal that is mixed breed i’m sure you can understand why it is offensive and a slur when used towards humans. it is dehumanizing and degrading mixed people, calling us animals.

i do not care if you are alterhuman or other kin or otherwise don’t identify as a human, including physically, i kindly ask you to please stop referring to yourself as a mutt; including names, pronouns, titles, what have you. unless you are a mixed race individual you cannot and should not be attempting to reclaim it or use it to refer to yourself.

i really wish this causal racism and normalization of a racial slur wasn’t so widespread and prevalent in these communities, that people were more knowledgeable on the fact it is a slur. please educate yourselves more, i understand not everyone may know it is a slur but upon learning so please do your own research and stop using it unless your mixed race- and even then understand other individuals may not be comfortable calling you a mutt.

tldr: mutt is a racial slur against mixed race individuals. unless you are bodily mixed race do not use it as names, pronouns, titles, etc etc any way to describe yourself. it is not for alter humans/non human individuals as a whole to reclaim, only to those bodily mixed race. please educate yourselves.
