my chronic fatigue is, obviously, very detrimental to my daily life—durr thats how that works—but i find it affects my queer identity in ways those without chronic fatigue would likely struggle to understand. some days i just Can't present how others "expect" femmes too (despite femme being more than a presentation term, but i digress) and i often feel invalid in my femme identity due to this. i struggle to do much for my appearance, and some days i can't do anything at all. femme is seen as a "high maintenance" identity, we're expected to present all cutesy and pretty all the time, and my chronic fatigue makes this almost impossible. i feel separated from a lot of femmes for this very reason.

i also struggle with my genderqueerness (general genderqueerness, not the label) due to my lack of "putting in effort"

trans people have a huge amount of pressure put on us to, well, put effort—pass well, dress up, put on that makeup, put on that suit, look a certain way, do this, do that—but i Can't. i just can't. and it took a long time for me to accept that

"Oh but there is so many of them" who cares? There have always been many of many categories in this community. People have been always jumping on trends. What makes symblabels special, really?

It helped us make a stable identity which we lacked for so long. We have been restarting our hoard so many times you cannot believe because of how unstable it all became and how hard it was to find any kind of "nudge" to grab onto and this is perfect. Symblabels are perfect. I know people hate boxes but we actually love being sorted into boxes it helps us so much to just sort who fits what symblabel.

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
