Project Hail Mary, back when Grace was still on earth, helping test gear for the Petrova task force. Stratt had him doing something with the new equipment that involved dangling down a dark tunnel, so my guess is it was something with the cables they had for the EVA suit, idk. He volunteered because she promised to be at the top waiting for him and supervising since it was likely something could go wrong. But suddenly she’s called away for something urgent and didn’t have time to leave anyone with him. Grace is doing fine, unaware of what’s happening above, when his rope slips and he’s in a free fall.

He doesn’t die, the rope tightens and he ends up being stuck hanging upside down, but he did get hurt from the abrupt pull. Distressed, he calls out, but Stratt doesn’t respond. He tries again, and again, and still no one hears him. He’s panicking, he’s injured, and he’s alone. When they finally get back and manage to pull him buck up, he’s an anxious mess, an animal backed into a corner. He trusted Stratt and she betrayed him. His tentative “I’d like to help” turns into “why would you leave me? I don’t care that you’re busy, you had an obligation, and you ABANDONED me-“
