“Why won’t you let me heal you,” Cas says, flat, barely a question.

And Dean thinks *because you’ll leave when you’re done* but he says “I don’t need you to heal me every time I get a bump or bruise, Cas.”

Dean can practically hear Cas’s eyes roll and he has to smother a smile.

“Your knee is bothering you. It doesn’t make you stronger to suffer.”

Dean just scoffs and kicks his feet to churn the water.

Cas levels him with a stare, one of those deep, searching looks that makes Dean’s stomach tighten. It’s been years and he’s still not used to the way that Cas sees right through him. Something softens in his face and Dean has to look away.

Gently, Cas rests two fingers on the back of Dean’s hand where it’s pressed to the concrete but the warm wash of grace doesn’t follow. It’s just the steady pressure of Cas’s touch and Dean’s breath catches in his chest.

“Dean,” Cas prompts.

With a sigh, Dean caves and says “fine.”

Instead of just healing him at the point where he’s already touching Dean, Cas lifts his hand to cradle Dean’s jaw. The breath Dean didn’t even realize he was holding explodes out of him in a rush as grace sings through his veins and over his nerve endings.

The pain is gone and Dean can barely remember where it even hurt. All he feels is the warmth where Cas is touching his face, where their thighs and shoulders are pressed together. A smile lights in Cas’s eyes, pleased that he got his way.
