f/o may not be the most emotive person out there, but that's just fine for you! you don't mind that your partner is not super affectionate

however... f/o has been trying to make a change... they want to make it clearer how much they appreciate you (or maybe they just feel more needy?!)

anyway, they made it their duty to try and be more affectionate with you

at first, they bring you the sort of stuff you like: small trinkets, your favorite food... you name it. and they expect you to get the message. it's likely you won't if they keep having a marinesque way of showing affection... /silly

then they tried to be a tinsy bit more obvious... by placing their hand on your shoulder. f/o thinks that will give you direct assurance that they love you, but you only turn around and ask them if something is wrong. they may start to wonder if they are that usually aloof, given how the hints fly over your head

in the end, they decide to give up on their plan... sort of! they decide to tell you what their intentions were; they just wanted to be more affectionate towards you but didn't know how !

even if you tell them that they don't need to be more affectionate, they reply – with that serious face of theirs – that they want to; not because of what you may feel but because they want to show parts of themselves that they didn't know existed previous to having you as their partner

slowly, they learn what their ways of showing affection are, and you too! maybe they are not the most conventional when it comes to it, but it feels very them, and that's what you love about it !
