What adulthood really feels like
this is an insult
I once applied and interviewed at a bookstore cafe for a barista position. It was way closer to my home, and I had almost a decade of experience working in a coffee shop at that point.Â
Got to the interview, and it turned out they didnât want a barista, they wanted someone to spearhead their new cafe, as the cafe that had been in the store before didnât want to resign their lease with the bookshop. They wanted to put their own cafe in its place, all new menus etc. They needed someone experienced to train their new staff, to handle window displays, to communicate with the bookstore owners about changes and needs of the cafe, to be able to handle inventory and ordering.
Okay, I had basically done most of that stuff at my previous job. I asked if cafe positions would also be required/trained to work the bookstore. They would. They would be required to run the book sale counter, stock and reshelf books, and help bookshop customers find things. They would alsoâdespite having an outside cleaning companyâhave to help maintain bathroom cleanliness. Theyâd have to take out trash, and clean spills, and vacuum. Wow, thatâs a lot, I said. Is this a managerâs position, then?
No, I was told, it wasnât, but there was a chance that after a training period it might become one. And that made me pause, because Iâd been working as the front-of-house manager at my cafe, and I knew how much work that entailed, and what kind of money I was making, and it was only the commute that had me looking for a new job. So I asked what the job paid. $8. E I G H T D O L L A R S. Per hour. Barely above minimum. For all of that work. For someone they expected to get an entirely new cafe up and running, and then also do the work of the bookstore and the cleaning company as well. I thanked the woman for the interview, said Iâd have to talk to my significant other about the impact a four dollar pay cut would have on our finances, and that I wasnât sure it was the job for me. She asked me to sleep on it, and sheâd call me the next day. This is a job I was way more than qualified for. I had years of experience doing exactly the things they wanted. It was a convenient location, close to my homeâI could walk there if I absolutely had to. I did not go home and talk about that four dollar pay cut and what it would do to our finances. I knew as soon as she told me that not only was it not feasible for us, it was downright insulting. That little money? For a frankly ridiculous list of responsibilities and expectations? She called back the next day. I thanked her again, and told her in no uncertain terms that my time was worth way more than what they were offering. And whenever people bitch about Millennials being lazy, not spending money, not buying housesâŚwhatever the complaint of the month isâŚI think about the very nice lady who conducted this interview, and how confused she was that I didnât want the job.Â
Between just 1990 and 2020 the buying power of the USD dollar has halved due to inflation. There are hiring managers out there thinking they are offering you pay thatâs worth twice as much as it actually is.
But $8 an hour for that kind of work in 1990 would STILL have been a fucking ridiculous lowball on what that job should have have paid.
man i don't wanna derail a post but i just saw a post that was showing different megafauna of different areas, like moose in colder climates like canada and russia, camels in the middle east area/deserts, kangaroos in australia. and someone commented "all we have in america is squirrels!!! đ¤Ł"
but like. bison. bison were america's megafauna. i don't want people forgetting about bison and what happened to them.
I donât know how to tell you this - but Moose are native to upper Midwestern states like MN, WI and MI as well as mountainous areas as far south as CO. Also Alaska.
this post was about american colonizers trying to kill off bison to starve native americans of one of their primary food sources.
Map of the historical range change of bison
I couldnât find a map of total populations today, but thereâs around 500,000 today - compare that to the millions before the colonization of the western US.
Just a reminder that it was once considered âfun sportâ to shoot bison from passing trains, leaving the corpses to rot in the sun. And donât forget this lovely photo--those are bison skulls. Imagine how many animals were slaughtered to make a pile this big.
This wasnât for sport. This wasnât for meat. This was for genocide.
Just to follow up, and to make this abundantly clear - the mass slaughter of the bison was to cause genocide of Native Americans. It was a deliberate destruction of their most valuable food source.Â

Tips for Improving your Concentration
1. Eliminate noise and other distractions from your environment. It takes approximately 15 minutes to reach a place of focused concentration. Thus, constant interruptions will stop you reaching that place.
2. Deliberately structure your environment so that the focus is clearly on studying - and not on doing, and seeing, other things. That may mean changing the room you work in, moving your desk, and so on.
3. Clarify your goals for each piece of work. If you donât know what youâre doing, or youâre hoping to achieve, youâll likely go in circles, and simply waste your time.
4. Break large areas of study down into smaller sections, and then plan how youâre going to work through each of these.
5. Set reasonable time limits for each portion of the task â and also for completing the final project. That should help to stop you wasting time on needless details, from wandering down blind alleys, and from procrastinating.
6. Be clear about the requirements for each task. For example, what are the guidelines you have to follow? What standard or quality of work is expected? How detailed does your knowledge have to be? If youâre writing as assignment, how long should it be, and what style and format is required?
7. Isolate yourself. Often, it is best if we lock ourselves away, and avoid other people, when we really need to work. Find a place to hide away, or put a sign or your door â but refuse to talk to anyone until the work is done!

STOP ATTACKING ME LIKE THISÂ
Iâm an oh ok kinda gal. If I say that u know Iâm a sadbaby
no worries is practically my catch phrase
A person with an abusive nature will always register you standing up for yourself as an act of betrayal. Betray them.
This is so important. As a good person, you may choose to stick around to prove to someone that youâre not a bad person. You have nothing to prove to a bad person. You cannot help everyone. You cannot fix everyone. Itâs not your fault.
