Hey there, let me tell you a story about a similar dom push that Plague and Fire had in 2014.
A long time ago, I’d say in the late 2013 period, Plague was starting to get REALLY good at dom. I joined their Dom Team in September (~2 months after it was founded) and back when I first joined Ice was the big bad dom group. Later on we had the Rainbowlicious raffle, an amazing 2013 Riot of Rot festival, and at one point in time Ice and Fire had some sort of coordinated alliance push that we busted into half way through the week and we got FIRST. Beating Ice during those days was a huge deal, and during the early 2014’s we were more than capable of beating them during any day (in fact, in that time period we eventually surpassed them with the total amount of wins)
At the height of Plague’s glory, however, there was the April 2014 registration window. It was a huge registration window, I’d consider it as the first registration window to officially unbalance some of the flight sizes. I believe it was the week after the registration window that we were going to have a push against Fire, and although Fire was smaller than us before the window now they were incredibly smaller than us.
The majority of the week vs. Fire was crazy. They were flipping us on the board, we were flipping them. Only when we flipped them did I actually take a 5 minute break and eat. Dragon prices were reasonably high (kind of like now with Water vs. Plague), but back then buyouts like the Wasteland Warriors weren’t that popular. (I don’t even think they existed?) I thought the dragon prices were high during those days - but there came the last day - Saturday. The day of pure hell. Dragon prices in the morning and the afternoon were the same as the other days, and unlike the other days where we constantly flipped with Fire, we were actually on top for most of the day.
After the last ~5 hours before rollover, we started to raid the AH for adults and the hatchlings. Prices for adults were at 20k during the peak of the raids. Most of the time we were chilling and taking our time (or at least I was) since we had been on the top for most of the day.
Then the most horrific yet amazing news hit us.
Fire was purposefully saving their dragons so they could flip us at the end.
We didn’t get the news until a couple of hours before rollover. By the time we got the news we couldn’t do much about it. Fire had about 3000 people at the time (heck, it could have been less) and we had almost 6000(?), so the fact that Fire had about 40 people with ancient (or near-ancient) lairs filled with trained fodder was basically an autowin. Heck, I remember the user who had an ancient lair filled with a page of 25’s, ~6 pages of 10’s, and only 8 permadragons.
We fought to the bone, but Fire flipped us within the last hour of the battle. At that time we were undefeated in terms of actual pushes (not test pushes), but all of that changed because of FvP.
To this day, I have not forgotten about that push or the amazing strategy that Fire’s dom team pulled off. Granted, it was over two years ago and nobody remembers that push anymore, but I think it’s a strategy a small flight can still pull off. I’m exalting dragons whenever I have the time right now because quite frankly I’m terrified of small flights like Water and Earth (and yes, Fire).
