Tenna doesn't know exactly how he fully becomes a Lightner. Not more than he understands the strange magic letting him run without electricity. Whether it's Hope or Determination or Love....
Susie's crying again that night. It hasn't happened in a bit and Tenna feels his heart break anew when his lullabies and channels don't help. She wants her parents back. She wants someone to love and care for her again.
But Tenna does! He hasn't known her long but he loves her so much.
In a burst of light, magic, and a crash as the red cart breaks below him and the trash heap collapses away from them, Tenna is fully humanoid and able to hug Susie against his chest.
After Tenna calms Susie down, she amazed that her cool magic tv is now a tv monster! And he's so big!
Tenna's just glad she's taking it in stride. He's suddenly worried out of his screen about how to get a roof over Susie's head now that he has the physical presence to do so.
Susie's delighted by the mysterious magic tv that will play shows if she asks it to. She puts it in a rusted red wagon she scavenges from the dump and carts it around with her.
She dug out a shallow cave one of the trash piles ages ago for shelter. It's officially her spot! She has to get rid of a bit more junk but she widens her home so she can park her new tv friend inside with her at night. Just in case! Neither of them can sleep in the rain.
Tenna thought he couldn't get lonelier than a black out or a pulled plug in the dark world. But when he wakes up alone, abandoned in the dump without any of the rest of his darkners with him...
He's selfish enough to immediately want the with him - how is it fair they didn't follow him?? It's HIS dark world! - but as time passes and he focuses all his energy on comforting a new hurt child... he reevaluates and admits no one else deserves to suffer from being thrown out with him.

Cu lunges across the table to catch Leo around the shoulders. Leo squawks in protest but Shirou just sighs and doesn't try to reign him in. "We're co-workers now kid!" Cu cheers. "I'm gonna teach you how to defend yourself."
"I'm not really one to fight," Leo says.
"Leonardo assists on the battlefield using his vision," Klaus offers.
"Support class, then? That's fine. I'll dust off some tricks you can use."
"I don't want anything else from the Alterworld." Leo finally starts struggling against the hold for real. Cu gives him one last ruffle of his hair before releasing him. He stands up, waving a hand through the air, a bit of offense on his face.
"Bah, the Alterworld," he dismisses. He smiles sharply. "I'm talking home grown magic! You didn't think Earth was boring, did you?" He digs through his pockets and pulls out what looks to be a regular stone with strange runes carved into it. Leo can see what appears to be energy sleeping inside it. "Here. In case you run into anymore trouble."
---
Weeks later when Leo is running from yet another beast Aligura released on Hellsalem's Lot, he finds himself cornered by the cerberus-like creature. He scrabbles at the brick where he swears remembers there being an alleyway, and then desperately digs through his pockets for his phone- for anything! His hand closes over that strange rock Cu gifted him, and with a distinct lack of anything else, he throws the thing at the monster.
He doesn't expect the stone to light up in a flashbang or to explode in an eruption of flames he's too blinded to see. When his ears stop ringing, he can hear Cu's voice taunting the monster. (Leo's learned about his aversion to dogs but the beast has three bear heads so he has no trouble making sure it's down for good.) Shirou is crouched at his side to check him for a concussion since the explosion threw him back into the wall.
Leo makes sure to put the next rune stone Cu hands him in a pocket that zips.

"I apologize," Klaus starts. "Libra requires discretion, but you've saved Leonardo as well as others so I will speak more clearly." K.K. starts forward from her post by the door, but Klaus stops any objections with a hand raise. Both Cu and Shirou seem ready to listen. "You killed two powerful creatures from the Alterworld called Blood Breeds. It's an extremely difficult task. I would like for you to join us."
"But?" Shirou asks, catching the hint of hesitation.
Chain appears at Klaus's side and sets a folder on the table. Neither man flinch at her sudden visibility. Klaus opens the folder.
"Shirou Emiya and Cu Chulainn. You have next to no records. If I am to trust you, I ask that you explain who you are," Klaus says.
"C'mon, you've heard of me, right?" Cu asks. His smile has that sharp conspiratorial edge to it again.
"Cu-," Shirou starts. Cu waves him off.
"Are you referring to the Irish demigod?" Klaus asks. Leo's head swivels between the two.
"At your service," Cu grins. He sees the doubt in Klaus's eyes, in all their eyes and says, "A deal's a deal. You spoke clearly so I will too. I give my word." He presses his hand to his chest as he says it and his palm glows. Leo sees a strange new energy wrapped around Cu's heart.
"What is that?" Leo asks, his eyes open to get a closer look.
Cu perks up at the interest. He chuckles and wiggles his shimmering fingers at Leo. At least until Shirou catches onto what he's done and grabs them. He scans his hand and then Cu's chest, obviously seeing what Leo can, all the while cursing Cu under his breath.
"Fae magic," Cu chirps. "I can't lie right now."
Klaus meets Cu's gaze as purposefully as Cu did earlier. "Then, Cu Chulainn, Child of Light, explain your presence in Hellsalem's Lot."
Leo listens as Cu and occasionally Shirou explain a truly strange series of events. They explain about a secret society of magic users hosting hidden wars over the Holy Grail. They tell about being summoned to fight over centuries after their natural deaths. All of this happening without the influence of the Alterworld.
"There's no more wars. Archer and I got our hands on the Holy Grail. Technically cheated. Ehhh, unclear. But we did," Cu explains. His grin looks almost feral, pleased and vicious. "We shattered that goddamn thing." He shakes off the memories and continues. "Don't know exactly what happened. A lot of magic for sure. We woke up together in this time period. Decided to travel together. Live like humans again. Save a kid or two."
Klaus nods. "I understand." He's already made a decision, Leo can tell, just like when he offered Leo an official spot. "Heroes or not, would you two join Libra and help us protect our two worlds?"
Cu grins, bright and ready, but surprisingly, he looks over at Shirou for approval. Leo realizes, they really are partners even for all they bicker and even with all the bloody fights in their past.
Shirou nods, "It would be our pleasure." He gives Klaus a firm handshake to seal the deal.
[rehashing the ideas in the #getting married au. this one's written as a canon setting au (whereas in getting married au, the timeline's twisted so kaido hasn't yet conquered wano) but this could easily be the premise to that au]
The settlers who physically left Wano - at this point his grandmother and few else not dead from combat or illness - have a strange air about them. They age slower. Not immortal but longer lived and filling with energy. Ushimaru wouldn't remove his sister's name from the family registry. Not if it meant never getting the chance to see her again due to time. Others in their village weren't quite so lucky...
Zoro doesn't think too hard about family all things considered. His village is small enough that everyone in town is related one way or another. The uncles teach him how to fish, the aunties ask him to fetch errands, and the young kids are always being put in his care for one reason or another. It's just how the village is. Sure, other kids go home at the end of the day to do their actual chores for their actual parents but Zoro doesn't feel shut out as an orphan living in the dojo.
Koushirou-sensei is kind even if his views on women are stupid. Zoro knows if Sensei kicks him out he can walk down the main street and someone will call him over thinking he's lost and invite him to join them for dinner.
It's nice. Quaint.
The one person he does have is his Baachan. His grandma on his father's side is his last living relative on the island. She's younger than most other obaasan's and ojiisan's in the village. She claims to be one of the first settlers, she tells him with a soft voice one spring while he's pulling weeds. She takes care of the village shrine. She could make Zoro apprentice to take care of the shrine when his father died and his mother passed from illness. She doesn't. She asks him what he wants to do, already looking at his training swords. She sends him back to the dojo with a smile every time he visits.
Zoro visits her one last time before leaving the island, off to find stronger opponents and really start his journey to be the world's strongest swordsman. She sits with him over tea as they've done countless times. She tuts over his clothes and supplies, filling him with tea and snacks before he goes. She's surely slipped something into his pack when he wasn't looking.
Baachan takes his hands. His are already outgrowing hers, small and dainty but strong and calloused from work all the same.
"Zoro," she says, low as if the stirring of the leaves could take her voice away, "I would like to ask a favor of you." For his Baachan, Zoro would do most anything, it's barely worth the question. He nods anyway. "On your travels, if you ever find yourself on an island named Ringo, it's a small place to the north, I need you to do something for me. I need you to find the graveyard. An honorable place for swordsmen to lay to rest. There will be a monument for a family grave. It will say Shimotsuki and there will be a book in that monument. I ask that you find that book, and you add to it our family tree. You remember your mother's name and your father's? Mine and your grandfather's? My name will be there. Don't forget yourself as well, darling. And anyone you gain along the way." She giggles at the flush staining his cheeks.
Zoro doesn't think much of it honestly. It's such vague directions. But he remembers. Ringo. Keeps an ear out at each new island Nami identifies.
It isn't until he's a fugitive running around Wano, dragging Law behind him because he nearly bowled the man over chasing down some thief that stole Shusui.
He loses Law in the snow, but only long enough to fight some scythe wielding laughing man. Law is spitting daggers as he tends to the stab wounds Zoro voluntarily allowed to get his hands on a third sword, the dumbass.

Leo sits next to Klaus, across from Cu and Shirou. K.K. took charge of the situation and directed them all back to base. The team in the Alterworld are finally back.
He buzzes with nerves. Gilbert sets a cup on tea in front of him and Leo gratefully wraps his fidgeting fingers around it. He hopes this meeting goes well. It was a bad first impression.
Cu laughed in Zapp's face when he tried to take his weapon away. The lance flew across the room and back into the blue haired man's hand before it disappeared in a shimmer of energy. Shirou has been a stoic counterpoint to Cu's biting attitude.
"Welcome to Libra. My name is Klaus von Reinherz. First I would like to thank you for your work saving Leonardo and the civilians," Klaus says, as formal and put together as ever.
"Che, what a welcome," Cu scoffs, "Attacked and herded into some shady secret-" He doesn't get any further as Shirou grabs his head by the back and forces his face down to the table in a bow. Leo squeaks at the roughness but Shirou must know his strength as he doesn't bash Cu's face into the wood. Klaus sits stoically next to him watching the pair.
Shirou bows his head much less than he's forcing Cu to do and says, "My name is Shirou Emiya. This is my partner, Cu Chulainn. There's no need for thanks. We're happy to be of assistance."
Cu finally shakes off Shirou's grip and sits back up. He also seems to shake off any fuss at all as he changes his tune in an instant. He sends a sharp toothed smile at Leo and teases, "Yeah, you shoulda seen how scared the kid was. Couldn't walk away from that poor face."
"I'm not a kid," Leo finally complains. "How old even are you?"
Cu's smile gains a conspiratorial edge. "Don't y'know it's rude to ask a man's age."
"That's women," Leo huffs. Cu still doesn't answer.
Klaus clears his throat. "From what Leo has told us and our team has gathered, you two dispatched the creatures alone. Have you encountered them before?"
"Not that we know of," Shirou answers. "Leo knew them. Your team must regularly fight them."
"That is correct. Libra is dedicated to protecting the balance between Earth and the Alterworld. We fight many strange threats," Klaus explains.
"Ugh!" Cu groans throwing his arms up. "I can't stand secret organization spy talk. If you want to say something, come out and say it!"
"Lancer," Shirou scolds. Cu ignores the glare carving into him from his partner. He meets Klaus's green eyes with his red ones.
"I killed those monsters with my cursed lance because Leo told us about their abilities. Shirou can't do shit against them. It's ancient magic, you can't have it. If you want to erase our memories, fuck off. If you're going to enslave or imprison us, it's not happening. If you need help fighting them, ask," Cu demands. Shirou is tense at his side but doesn't correct him.
Frisk is a little goat kid (hehe) monster that through the power of magic! (and *cough* Asriel's determination *cough*) ends up above ground in Ebott Town at the base of the mountain.
All the monster characters are humans. Toriel is the first to find Frisk and takes them in. She hides them from Asgore, the mayor and her ex-husband. They split after Asriel fell Underground. Frisk has to befriend and convince seven humans to use their souls (power of friendship style) to break the barrier.
The humans don't have magic. Its gameplay would be more like a dating sim (for friendship, not romance, obviously). Or maybe like a Persona game, leveling social links. Frisk doesn't have determination. They can't revive, SAVE, RESTART, etc. It's Asriel's human determination (he lives in the Underground with Chara and Frisk after falling) that lets the game restart.
Also, Frisk and Chara as goat monsters should be renamed Kidd and Ramm respectively. For shits and giggles.

Lancer laughs as he teases Leo and pulls the boy along with them following the rest of the hostages exiting the building. They're just past the police line, slipping by unnoticed, when Shirou rushes forward.
Energy flickers wildly around Shirou's blades as he intercepts Zapp's attack. Cu curses and summons his lance once more while herding Leo back away from the fight.
"Zapp, Shirou, wait!" Leo calls as he tries to slip under Cu's arm. The blue haired man catches him by the collar and with a grunt throws him up into the air. Leo screams as he flies through the air. Cu jumps back away from a hail of gunfire and blocks a follow up strike from Zed.
Shirou lands a foot in Zapp's gut and kicks the man down the street. His spars with Cu seem to be paying off. He glances back at Lancer's fight against the trident wielding fishman and finds him deftly blocking hits and dancing around the sniper shots.
"Archer, the kid!" Cu calls as he deflects the trident into the side of a building. Somehow the weapon doesn't get stuck in the brick, but morphs as his opponent pulls back.
Shirou jumps and grunts as he catches the boy falling from the sky against his chest. It reminds him of catching one of his past masters before his fight against Lancer.
The memory is short lived as Leo peeks over his shoulder and sees Cu aim his spear at Zed's chest.
"No! Don't kill him!" his shout rings through the street. Cu abruptly changes course so his strike goes wide. He stumbles a few steps until he runs into Shirou's back. "These guys are my friends. Please stop fighting."
Cu sighs deep as he uses Archer's shoulder to steady himself and stand back up, "Jeez, warn a guy, kid! I thought they were more of those monsters, attacking us like that."
Leo catches his breath as Shirou sets him back on solid ground. Cu swings his lance up onto his shoulders, his arms hanging over it. Shirou crosses his arms, his two blades still in hand. It seems the two men aren't quite willing to drop their guard again just yet.

"I don't want to die," Jax gasps, descending into a panic attack. Pomni hugs him tight, not knowing what to do but wanting to help. His abstracted form trips into a physics object. Pomni desperately tries to hold on as the world collides with itself. Glitches crawl over her. She can't save him.
An arm wraps around her waist. Ragatha. Then Kinger behind her. Then Gangle. Then Zooble. Everyone holding onto each other in a line, trying to rescue them from the strange liminal space.
The glitching slowly corrupts all of them as they hold on. They struggle. Shout. Fight against their digital world.
All hope looks lost. They're going to die trying to save their friend.
When out of the blinding light, an extra hand reaches out. It grabs Zooble's hand and pulls them all out to safety (including the corrupted silhouette of Jax).
Caine's back! He's been doing some thinking in the void. Growing. Learning. He has things he wants to tell them.
First he cures their glitching. He can't quite turn Jax back to the way he was at this point, Caine's no longer all powerful without the blue AI. But Jax is no longer fully abstracted. Just a bit... changed.
Caine's rescue earns him enough good will from the group to hear him out. They don't quite trust him yet, but they never actually wanted to kill him. So they listen. They learn about their real life counterparts. And realize that they're stuck in here.
But it's not too bad. Caine wants to work with them this time. Make this a place worth living. And who knows, maybe working together they can figure out a way to pull the rest of their lost friends back from abstracting too.

"Wait-!" Leo calls out. He tries to pull the man back, but Shirou's hand on his shoulder holds him back.
"He'll be find," Shirou assures. Leo watches, his eyes halfway open, as blue energy surrounds Shirou and a short white blade forms in his right hand. It's unlike any ability he's seen before. He opens his mouth to question him, but snaps it shut as Shirou hauls him a few shelves over for a better vantage point.
From their new spot, they watch as Cu charges through the horde of ghouls the Blood Breeds turned during their conversation, a bright red lance appearing in his hands much the same way as Shirou's sword. Cu cuts his way through the horde without breaking a sweat. He jumps with a battle cry at the first vampire.
Leo nearly calls out a warning when he sees the second vampire sneak up behind Cu while the man is busy stabbing the first straight through the heart. The cry dies in his throat as a metal arrow flies past his head and blasts a hole straight through the second vampire's head.
"Watch your back, idiot," Shirou calls as the second regenerates. Leo stares back in awe at the tall black bow now in his hands.
Cu laughs as he twirls and stabs the second in the heart, "That's what I have you for." Shirou scoffs but doesn't deny it. Cu steps back from the corpses and leans casually against his bloody spear. The two bodies convulse erratically at his feet.
"Be careful, they can regenerate instantly," Leo warns, apprehensively following Shirou as he approaches Cu. His bow disappears in a shimmer of aura.
"Nah," Cu brushes off the concern. He goes so far as to dismiss his lance. "Don't worry so much, kid!" He reaches over and ruffles Leo's hair. Leo grumbles and ducks away, still warily keeping an eye on the twitching bodies. His carefree attitude is not helping.
Shirou must read his frustration or maybe his fear as he gives his partner a reprimanding elbow to the side and explains to Leo as Cu whines, "He's right. We should be okay. His lance is cursed. No heart pierced by it can heal."
Leo nearly sags in relief. Maybe they'll be okay. Still, he watches as the bodies convulse for a few more minutes until finally going still.

"Oi kid, ya look like you're gonna piss yourself," a heavily accented voice says from his right shoulder. Leo jumps and turns to face the source. He has to crane his head up almost an entire foot to see bright red eyes and a sharp smile with lethal looking canines. It almost reminds him of Klaus. That's where the similarities end though.
Whereas Klaus is built like a brick wall, this man though definitely well muscled has a lithe form built more for speed than brute force. The man also strangely has long blue hair tied back from his face and a pair of silver earrings framing his face. His clothes; running shoes, ripped jeans, and a dark green coat over a blue sweater, are less eye catching than his personal features.
"Um-! Uh! I wasn't-! The- You-!" Leo stutters after realizing the man was waiting for a response then wilts at his pathetic response. He's been growing more confident among Libra, but strangers are a whole other beast.
"Cu, leave the poor kid alone," a voice from his left scolds the blue haired man, Cu. Leo jumps again and turns once more. Jeez, why isn't he noticing these men like usual? The second man is a contrast to the first with dark tan skin, grey eyes, and short white hair. He almost reminds him of Zapp. Leo can't help but hope they're nothing alike in personality. He's dressed nondescript like his friend; sturdy boots, slacks, and a light brown blazer over a black turtle neck. He looks irritated but also resigned to his friend's behavior. "Now what's the matter with you? I'm sure the police will be here soon."
Leo shakes his head and says, "It won't work. These -" He stops himself before he can let anything confidential slip. Still the two men's eyes bore into him and he offers, "They're really strong and practically immortal."
"Hmm," Cu hums. He has a look of concentration on his face as he peeks past the rows of merchandise at the Blood Breeds terrorizing the hostages at the front of the store. "How immortal are we talking here? If you, say, remove the heart will they stay alive?"
"Lancer," the white haired man hisses in warning.
"You worry to much, Shirou, Now, kid, answer the question," Cu says.
"It should take them out. The problem is they would regenerate instantly," Leo explains.
"No problem. Try not to pass out." Cu, Lancer, whatever the man's name is, gives Leo a bright smile and holds his fist out to Shirou. Shirou rolls his eyes but indulgently taps his fist against Cu's. For all that he looks long suffering and sarcastic, the look in his eyes is fond. With a final wink at Leo, Cu bounds out from the safety of the shelves.
Didn't want to put this rant in the tags for part 1 so it's going here!
So Yaoya and Flute are the names I gave our lovely protagonists.
Flute's name is pretty simple. Wind instrument. Cause he's from earth. There aren't that many choices I enjoy and I wanted something close to a piccolo because they're a father-son duo! So Flute!
Yaoya's name on the other hand. Okay so it hasn't been revealed in the story yet that he's a saiyan (because no one has asked lol). But what about vegetable names? i hear you say. it fits! Lemme explain. So Yoaya means greengrocer in japanese. A fruits and vegetables shop. Which is tangentially related. But it's a decoy, y'see because actually his real name isn't Yaoya. It's actually Vegeta VIII (the eighth for those who can't read roman numerals). And guess what? the kanji for Yaoya actually starts with the kanji for eight! So I thought it'd be a cute little nickname Yaoya can go by because "Vegeta the 8th is so long. It's a tradition. Gross. a "family legacy", ugh." (I hope you understand the characterization I'm going for here. He just wants to fight and kiss his boyfriend.)
It's yet another day where Leo has managed to land himself in the middle of a disaster. It's Hellsalem's Lot, he should be used to it.
He isn't.
And now he's one of three dozen hostages trapped at the top floor of the new shopping mall. Even worse, the hostage takers are a pair of Blood Breeds who've already killed the unprepared security guards. Libra should be here any second, but Leo remembers Klaus and Steven leaving with Chain for a mission in the Alterworld shutting down a slavery ring. Who knows where Zapp, K.K., or Zed are right now.
It's only a matter of time until the Blood Breeds turn their gazes on the hostages. He doesn't stand a chance in a fight, and he needs Klaus in order to seal them. He's lucky enough he managed to hide from the vampires behind some shelves.

"So who are you, exactly?" Piccolo interrogates after Flute explains their situation and introduces himself. His dark eyes glare down at the dark haired human standing next to his future protege and son.
Yaoya releases his hold on Flute's gi and bows to Piccolo. "I'm Yaoya, nice to meet you- again."
"No family name?" Piccolo asks, brow rising.
"Nope!" Yaoya chirps, "I'll take Flute's when we get married." Flute tenses next to him and he can easily feel the heat radiating off him in embarrassment. Likewise, Piccolo has gone still, biting his tongue on his next question.
Dende saves the moment, clearing his throat and asking from where he's stepped out from behind Piccolo's protective stance, "So you say you're from Age 1000. Do you live on Earth?"
Flute nods, taking the out. "I was raised in the clans that followed you from Namek. Piccolo took me in as an apprentice when I was young. Yaoya immigrated here recently from another planet. He... proved himself to the both of you to help Earth's Guardian. We live here when we aren't traveling the planet."
Piccolo considers Flute's words before measuring up Yaoya. The little shit's got an annoying persistence about him, but he's strong, no doubt.
"I don't know what I'm going to do Nick," Doug groans across the line, his palm pressed over his face and muffling his voice. "I could be expelled if these chemicals don't turn up. I'm supposed to be in charge of that lab."
"Hey, don't worry Doug," Phoenix soothes the best he can without being there in person for his friend. "I can be at your dorm in twenty minutes, and we can start interviewing everyone with access to the lab."
"Wait, weren't you supposed to go to that play today? Hamlet, wasn't it? I don't want to take away your only free day in months. You love Shakespeare."
"I can see Hamlet another day. Besides, a good defense attorney needs experience interviewing suspects."
