The need to define others is one of our strangest obsessions. And yet, thoughtlessly placing people into categories like race, ethnicity, gender, sex, orientation, age, wealth or status is somehow the only way we’ve learned to make sense of our world and our lives. But if you stop and think about it, even though this is “normal” it’s still really just a self-serving illusion. 

How To Wear All Black In The Heat

A lot of us New Yorkers, myself included, love the all-black-everything look but it doesn’t always seem like the right move in the summer when temperatures are high. In fact, it might even seem completely out of place when everyone else is wearing bright hues and you stand out like a some sort of beach goth. But just for a sec, allow me to make a case for wearing black in the warmer months. Since black is known to attract heat, wearing less is one way to go. Short sleeves, shorts, tanks - in this case less is definitely more. Another tip is to pay attention to fit. While black skinny jeans and tight tees might make it through from the fall to early spring, when it’s so humid that you can barely breathe, try relaxed fits or go for the oversized look to allow your body some breathing room. Lastly, chose your fabrics wisely. For this outfit I chose a semi-transparent (yup, as in see-through!) top in a liqhtweight sheer fabric that allows your skin to catch that hopefully cool breeze every so often. The pants are a lightweight sythentic fabric with a loose weave, so if you’re going to go with summer trousers think thin cottons and linens or something similar and avoid wools. When all else fails, simply break up your black by pairing it with ligter neutrals like what or camel so you can still get a sophisticated city look even on a hot tropical vacation.
