sanji and vulnerability
was thinking about the sanji & nami scene in 2x08 again (shocking, i know) and specifically about how it is as important a moment for sanji as whiskey peak is for zoro where we see him regaining his confidence in his abilities after his duel or little garden for usopp, learning what it really means to be a brave warrior and realising that yes, he can be that but i think because it’s not a huge feat it’s overlooked or less obvious then the others
sanji is achingly human and by that i mean we see him consistently display all sides of humanity and what it is to be a person. he can be bitterly mean and angry with a whip fast temper, hurling insults and swears and in the same breath he is wonderfully kind, helping everyone he can with zero hesitation whether that’s a starving pirate, a young man he doesn’t know bleeding out or a sick crew mate. he is loudly passionate about his dream and his job and he’s also lethally dangerous in a fight. he is a flirt, suave and quick witted and he’s ridiculous and silly and childish, dicking about with luffy and usopp and he’s also empathetic and sensitive, crying for both nami and chopper. he can be all of those things and more and can switch between them in the time it takes to draw a breath because to be human is to be a complicated, confusing, melting pot of emotion
all that being said what we never see from him throughout almost 2 full seasons is bare emotional vulnerability in regards to himself because he has walls up a mile high and if there’s one thing he cannot let himself do is appear quote unquote weak in front of other people and, in his head due to his past, being that emotional, crying in front of someone, showing that he can be hurt and so on isn’t something he’s allowed to do
he’s open with luffy and usopp about his past with zeff yes but telling them that isn’t hard for him. he’s not emotional about it or struggling to talk about it and he’s actually telling them the story to help luffy, to give advice to a boy struggling with the burden of what it means to be a captain for the first time. he’s focusing, as is usual for him, on the people around him (it wouldn’t surprise me if he uses that story as a distraction in way, like hey here’s this tragic thing that happened to me, focus on that and don’t ask me about before)
then we get to 2x08 and him talking to nami and it is starkly different to anything we’ve seen from him before in that he is so open; he’s stripped back, none of his usual larger then life smiles and compliments and gentlemanly act that is usually in place when talking to nami and he’s letting himself cry and be emotional and vulnerable in a way we haven’t see from him before and in a way he doesn’t often let himself be as he talks about something deeply personal to him that he absolutely has never told anyone before. it’s incredible hard to be that vulnerable in front of another person when you were raised the way he was so the fact he is able to with nami is a huge step for him. she doesn’t know it but it’s such a huge display of his trust in her and is so telling of how comfortable he is with these people on this crew
I am sorry but how can you watch OPLA Sanji’s backstory in Season 1 and his monologue about his mom in Season 2, and still come to the conclusion that “he is just a flirt”??? Seriously?!
looks like someone has an alcohol problem..
Ngl I appreciate the OPLA team and Oda’s involvement
But I am also deeply concerned for the other upcoming anime live actions

this show was making points!!
thinking about sanji while you're stoned and restrained, king?
I always have to remind myself that the opla onlys don’t know about the whole “zoro came back from hell for sanji” death pact
much 2 consider
we've got you
