What if Steve was pregnant when he went into the ice?

Chased by grief over the loss of Bucky. Steve takes the Valkyrie into the ice in an attempt to stop Hydra.

70 years later, Steve wakes up in a new time, with new enemies and new friends, but the mission is the same. Bring down the enemy, no matter what. When a mysterious figure known as San Dapth makes his way onto the scene, Steve and the Avengers step forward and heed the call to arms. Together, they have to face down San Dapth and bring him to justice.

It is in their fight against San Dapth that Steve discovers something terrifying. He's pregnant with Bucky Barnes' baby. Now he must learn to live this new life without the man he loves.

Hydra learns of Steve's pregnancy. And they'll do whatever it takes to get to his unborn child, including unleashing their greatest asset from the ice—the Winter Soldier.

When Steve discovers the Winter Soldier and Bucky Barnes are one and the same, he must fight to bring back the man he loves.

Chapter 53: Only Human

Snippet:

“Sorry about this,” Steve says, flashing back to the dozens of times they’d played doctor with each other over the years, either during the war or not. 

Bucky’s gone quiet. Steve spares him a glance again, but that brief glimpse is gone. Now he sees nothing but the Asset. It’s disconcerting, but he forces himself to ignore it. Instead, he runs his fingers along Bucky’s bruised and battered skin and pinches the wound closed. 

Bucky stiffens, but doesn’t make a sound. Steve feels sick as he threads the needle through the wound, working as quickly as he can, considering the dim light and the circumstances.

“How’s your healin’ factor?” Steve asks as he sews the needle through the skin, electing not to tie off each individual stitch, since that would waste the suture line. 

“Functional,” Bucky says with the Asset’s distant connotation.

Chapter 50: Escape ♥ ♥ ♥

Snippet:

Steve points Owens' tranq gun in return.

“You made me do this,” Steve says in response, taking aim and firing, the chains on his wrist clanging together. The tranq dart hits Owens straight in the throat. Owens chokes out a sound of surprise and snatches the dart from his skin, then stumbles back a step. He throws the dart at Steve, but it comes up short and falls to the ground at Steve’s feet.

“You motherfucking…” He reaches for his radio, but not before Steve lunges from the bed and slams into him, using all his weight to take Owens down to the floor while protecting the swell of his belly from harm. His movements severely hampered by the chains on his wrists and ankles, he shoves the tranq gun into the back of his pants, yanks the radio off its cord, and sends it flying across the room, then straddles Owens, grabs both his renegade arms as they swing disparately in the air, and shoves them down, clamping them between his thighs. 

None of him is strong enough to have done this on his own, but the tranq dart is already hitting, and Owens is a floppy, unwieldy mess. He curses out in a slurred voice, his eyes dilated to wide points, his breath becoming ragged. 

And then he’s out. Or dead. Most likely dead, by the way his chest has stopped moving. Steve gasps for breath, chest heaving. Then scrambles down Owens’ legs and digs through pockets until he finds the keys to the chains. Lips pursed in a thin line of apprehension, Steve undoes the lock on his wrists. The cuffs clatter to the floor, leaving his bare wrist aching. Still sitting on Owens, he twists and peels the cuffs off his ankles. They’re raw and red from where the metal has rubbed against his skin.  

Just then, to Steve’s left, the metal door swings open. Backup has arrived, though Steve’s not sure how they knew something was up. Steve immediately reaches for the tranq gun, swinging it up and out as fast as a cat can swipe, and firing off a shot before he gets a good look at who’s coming inside.

The tranq dart skitters against metal and is sent flying.

Steve looks up to meet gray eyes.

Bucky.

Chapter 49: Bucky

Snippet:

“You’re a dead fish.” Rumlow snarls some time later, and then there’s the open-palm sting of a slap to the face, interrupting the Asset’s quiet equilibrium. The Asset’s head whips to the side, and he blinks back into awareness, staring down at the corduroy cloth of the couch as the flesh of his face burns with low-grade pain.

He comes to the realization that he’s nude from the waist up and his pants are open at the zipper. A glance at Rumlow shows he’s about the same. 

“Is this how it was when you fucked Rogers?” Rumlow snarls, his voice venomous. Rumlow rears back, cursing up a storm, and drags himself off the Asset's lap to pace the area in front of the television with long, limping strides.  “It can’t have been, you musta been able to get it up at some point, since you managed to get the fucker pregnant!” 

It takes a moment for the words to register as anything other than vitriol, but when they do, the Asset’s ears start to ring. The Asset doesn’t react externally. He just sits there, staring ahead of himself, moderately aware of the threat that is Rumlow, but otherwise unmoving. Inside though? Inside, he’s burning, he’s flaming, he’s imploding and yet exploding, his mind unfurling itself like a cluster bomb.

Chapter 48: Memories

Snippet:

But he hadn’t thought, had he? 

Not when he’d pressed his palm to Rogers’ chest and rubbed it in what could have only been a sign of comfort. Not when he’d whispered those words out loud. Any one of those actions could have sent him right back to the chair. If Rumlow had been paying closer attention. If the cameras had been working. If Rogers had said something. He’d be as good as wiped. 

He scolds himself now. He can’t act like that, like a human; he’s not one of them. He is an Asset. He is above such things. Sympathy. Empathy. Caring. Those aren’t words in his handbook. They’re negatives, and if he keeps letting himself experience them, he’s going to be as good as gone.

He couldn’t help it, though, seeing Rogers like that, gasping for breath, his lips the same shade of blue as his eyes. He’d been certain the other man was going to die. It had been…terrifying. He couldn’t think of a world without Rogers. He wasn’t sure when or how, but Rogers had weaseled his way through the cracks and crevices of the Assets' armor and had come out the other side as something important, something special.

“He’ll be alright, love.” A voice flashes through his mind's eye, and a moment later, he catches sight of a woman, no, not a woman, but the woman, the one who comes with the scent of baking vanilla and the crush of arms holding him tight. The one who feels like something important, therefore, must be something important.

Within the memories/not memories, she steps into his line of sight and offers up a battered and dingy teacup; her hands are long-fingered, like his. When the him that isn’t him looks up, her features are like his, only better. More kind. She smiles a gentle, reassuring smile and places the mug in his palm. Her smile is nothing like his, but maybe he could imagine that it had once looked like hers. 

The person he was not lifts the cup to drink it; it tastes of a light sweetness, warmth, and a taste he knows but can’t place. He wills himself to look back up at the ghost of her, to examine her face, so he can understand what she means to him. Who she is. He doesn’t know her, though. He doesn’t know her. She’s gone like that, a fleeting thing, the lingering flavor of the tea at the back of his throat the only thing left to recall her by.

Chapter 36: Ten Seconds

Snippet:

“You’re late. I asked for you 20 minutes ago.” The Doctor snaps, rolling up his sleeves, he turns to look at Rogers. 

The Asset follows his gaze and has to stop himself from doing a double-take. Rogers looks different, where before he’d been full of life and downright aggressive, now he’s sallow-faced, with dark circles under his eyes.

 He glances between the two of them, and there’s no snarky comment or backhanded jibe. Not only that, but he physically looks smaller, as if he’s lost ten pounds of muscle mass in the last day. He lies on his side in the fetal position on the cot, his legs drawn up against his belly, his arms wrapped around his middle. There’s a bedpan in front of him on the floor. The room smells like vomit and sickness. On the cot at his feet is a tray of food, untouched. 

The Asset doesn’t like any of it. He’s not sure what they did to Rogers, but they did something bad.

“Ever since your lot gave him that serum, he hasn’t been able to hold food down.” Doctor Wayne complains with a sigh. “I’ve offered him an anti-nausea pill, but he refuses to take it. In his condition, with his caloric needs, he can’t go much longer without eating. I need him to take this pill.” 

“I told you, doc. I ain’t takin’ anymore of your poison.” Rogers says, and the Asset finds himself relieved that at least he’s saying that much. Rogers rolls over to face away from them, something that seems to take a gargantuan amount of effort for him, and leaves him gasping and clutching his stomach. 

* There is a huge difference between the genres. I will die on this hill. Also - I have both flavors.

As Steve approaches the door of the walk-in closet, there’s a sudden growl. It’s low and defensive, and Steve freezes. He’s only wearing a towel, he suddenly realizes stupidly.

“Jarvis?” he calls out.

“Yes, sir?” comes the clipped voice of the A.I over the comms system.

“Is there someone in the closet?”

Did you want him to lose the baby?” Doctor Wayne snarls, shoving past the scientists and heading directly for Pierce. “He gives birth now, and that child will be too weak to survive on its own. Do you have the services here to provide for a NICU baby? Because I don’t see them. I know what you need, but you need to understand that he’s about this close to giving birth. If you want that baby alive and well, you let me stabilize him, get him back on his feet. Then you can send your hounds for his blood. Until then, he’s under my care, and what I say goes.”

Pierce raises his eyebrows, his hand falling from the Asset’s shoulder. He looks livid; he’s obviously not used to others questioning his orders. 

“Is that what you say, Doctor Wayne?”

Doctor Wayne is looking paler by the minute as he realizes that he may have overstepped the line, but he doesn’t back down. He inhales sharply and jerks his head in a nod.

“If you want that baby alive. You follow what I say. You’ll get your fluids, but it’ll have to wait.”

“How long?” Pierce asks, his voice dark.

“Give me 48 hours to get him to calm down and to treat his injuries. If the baby isn’t born by then, you can have your fluids.”

Pierce scowls, but nods his head.

“Fine. 48 hours, no longer.”

“Fine.” Doctor Wayne nods his head and turns away, waving at the scientists like they’re a flock of pigeons. “Get back, you heard the man.” He snarls. “You, get me a fetal doppler heart rate monitor, now!”

Chapter 33: Drive

Rogers brings up his hands and clutches at the Asset’s wrist. The Asset ignores the hard grip and tightens his own in response. Rogers' mouth opens, and he makes a choking sound as it becomes harder to breathe. 

“Bucky…stop!” He gasps, his eyes widening, those goddamn tears leak down his cheeks, staining them with wetness. The Asset shakes his head to rid himself of the feeling hearing that name brings. He has to stay on task. The mission is imperative. He can’t let something like a name distract him.

“Stop saying that name!” The Asset snarls, letting up on his grip enough to allow Rogers to breathe, even as he pulls his left arm out of the car and tosses the keys to the side, where they land on the ground with a clatter. Reaching into his pocket, he grabs a syringe of sedative.

“Bucky! Please, you know me, you have to know me!” Rogers croaks as soon as he can get a breath in. He stares up at the Asset with imploring eyes. His whole body quakes as he speaks. 

The look on his face does something uncomfortable to the Asset's gut. The Asset doesn’t like it. He’s not used to feeling anything, much less whatever this is. Something is wrong with him. His body is malfunctioning. He should turn himself in for reconfiguration. It isn’t going to happen, but he should. 

“Bucky, I can help you. Whatever they did to you, I can help you. You just have to let me go.”

“Sir is highly against this turn of events, Captain,” Jarvis says from above. Steve glances up at the ceiling. 

“Are you tattletailing on me, Jarvis?” Steve questions, raising his eyebrow and grinning up at the AI. 

“Natasha has informed him of your request. He is at a conference, but has taken the time to inform me that you are, and I quote, ‘a muscle-headed idiot’.”

“How nice of him.” Steve snorts, grabbing for his bottle and taking a swig. “Good thing he’s not here to stop me. What do you have to say, Jarvis?”

“My own processors indicate that exercise is healthy for a pregnant individual, and beyond that, I am inclined to believe you know your own boundaries and would not put your child in danger unless strictly necessary.”

“Good.” Steve declares, grinning and capping off his drink. “Well then, will you kindly tell Tony to stuff it?”

“I can do that, yes, Captain,” Jarvis says.

Chapter 30: The Babyshower Part 2

Snippet:

“Steve, go on, cut the cake.” Sam encourages, waving Steve forward.

Reluctantly, Steve sets aside his plate and puts back on his shoes, something that has the group roaring with laughter.

“Aww, poor Stevie.” Darcy croons.

Steve shakes his head and rolls his eyes.

“You try walkin' around with marshmallows for feet.” He grumbles, adjusting his jacket and brushing crumbs from his chest. 

Walking over to the cake, he steps around behind the table and takes the knife from Tony.

“Alright, it’s been a few decades since I’ve done this, I assume it works the same way it used to,” Steve asks, raising an eyebrow, his joke receiving chuckles all around.

“Just cut the cake, old man,” Tony says, stepping back so Steve’s at the head of the table. 

“Alright.” Steve starts at the upper tier and begins to slice it into equal cuts. Pepper steps forward, holding out a plastic plate. “Whoever made this did a fantastic job. Oh! It’s chocolate.”

Chapter 29: The Babyshower Part 1 ♥♥♥

“Come on, Steve, eat something!” Tony urges, bouncing to the beat of the music, his ‘papabear’ coming out, as Clint would call it.

“Clint’s getting me a plate,” Steve calls back, leaning back in his chair and grinning.

“Because I’m a saint!” Clint sings from the food table.

“Steve, tell me, how far along are you?” Jane asks as she chews daintily on a strawberry and walks up to stand beside him.

“Seven months, give or take a few days,” Steve says, wiggling a hand to indicate he’s not quite sure.

“And how long does a human pregnancy last?” Lady Sif questions next, obviously having been listening in, as was most everyone.

“Nine months,” Natasha says from her place on the couch across the way.

“Is an Asgardian pregnancy longer?” Steve questions.

“Long enough, twelve months. You humans have it lucky.” Lady Sif declares, grinning. “Not that I plan on bearing children any time soon.”

“That sounds awful.” Jane hisses, wincing.

“I agree to that.” Steve nods his head, wincing along with her and pressing a hand to his belly. “It feels like it’s been forever, yet somehow gone by so fast at the same time.” He admits.
