If thereās one thing about Steve, itās that heās fast. When he sets his mind to a task, it happens, and it happens quick. Itās a matter of seconds for him to step out into the hall, aim his tranq gun, and fire. He strikes Rollinās in the shoulder before heās even had a chance to turn and see whatās going on. Whirling, his blonde hair twisting in the wind of his own passing, he turns on Montez, raises the weapon once more, and fires.
Montez, who is reaching for his radio, a look of alarm overcoming his features, lets out a shout of pain as the dart strikes. Steve lunges forward and yanks the radio off his shoulder, ripping the cord from its holster even as Montez drops to the ground, his eyes fluttering closed.Ā
Steve turns back to Rollinās and watches him fall over onto his side with a thud, his face still set in an expression of surprise, his left hand clutching at the metallic shape of the dart Steve had shot him with, his right at his radio. Thereās a soft buzzing sound as the radio attempts to relay the message it never received.Ā
Steve walks over and kicks his hand away from the radio, then crouches awkwardly and similarly disassembles Rollinās radio. That way, if by some chance they wake up, they wonāt be able to sound the alarm.Ā
He takes a moment to disarm both men. Like Thompson, theyāre only carrying tranq guns. He doesnāt care. He needs weapons. Checking the safeties, he shoves both guns into the waistband of his joggers and hopes to hell they donāt fall down off his ass.

Snippet:
āYouāre late. I asked for you 20 minutes ago.ā The Doctor snaps, rolling up his sleeves, he turns to look at Rogers.Ā
The Asset follows his gaze and has to stop himself from doing a double-take. Rogers looks different, where before heād been full of life and downright aggressive, now heās sallow-faced, with dark circles under his eyes.
Ā He glances between the two of them, and thereās no snarky comment or backhanded jibe. Not only that, but he physically looks smaller, as if heās lost ten pounds of muscle mass in the last day. He lies on his side in the fetal position on the cot, his legs drawn up against his belly, his arms wrapped around his middle. Thereās a bedpan in front of him on the floor. The room smells like vomit and sickness. On the cot at his feet is a tray of food, untouched.Ā
The Asset doesnāt like any of it. Heās not sure what they did to Rogers, but they did something bad.
āEver since your lot gave him that serum, he hasnāt been able to hold food down.ā Doctor Wayne complains with a sigh. āIāve offered him an anti-nausea pill, but he refuses to take it. In his condition, with his caloric needs, he canāt go much longer without eating. I need him to take this pill.āĀ
āI told you, doc. I aināt takinā anymore of your poison.ā Rogers says, and the Asset finds himself relieved that at least heās saying that much. Rogers rolls over to face away from them, something that seems to take a gargantuan amount of effort for him, and leaves him gasping and clutching his stomach.Ā

āMr. Rogers, can you wake up for me?ā Someone says in an unfamiliar voice. Steve blinks, unsure where he is or whatās going on. The people before him become clearer, and it's as he is looking from face to face that his eyes land on him for the first time.
Bucky.Ā
The memories come flooding back. He recalls the attack in the park and ripping off his attacker's mask, only to find Buckyās face underneath. He remembers the fight in the car and the ride in the helicopter. Doing everything in his power to convince Bucky to let him go, only for the other man to carry on, like they didnāt know each other. He remembers, god, does he remember, Rumlowās hands on his body, and Bucky stopping him, in direct contradiction to everything Steve had seen so far. Bucky had pulled Rumlow away and distracted him.Ā
Then he remembers the doctors, and the horrible smell of antiseptic overwhelms him. He chokes, rolling over and wretching, but nothing comes up. Hands help him onto his side, and rub calming circles on his lower back.
āEasy. Easy.ā Someone saysāsomeone whoās not Bucky.Ā āYouāre going to feel nauseous and disoriented. There are a lot of drugs in your system at the moment. Iām Doctor Wayne. I know this is a bad situation, but Iām here to help you and your baby the best I can. Can you tell me your name?ā
Steve groans, rolling back onto his back, and someone lifts the bed behind him, so that heās sitting upright, which feels a lot better. Heās not used to lying on his back. The baby is too heavy for that now. Feeling like he can actually breathe, he opens his eyes again.
āCan you tell me your name?ā The man repeats.
āSteve Rogers.ā Steve croaks, looking down over himself, he sees that his hands and legs are shackled together, with a loose set of chains hanging between the shackles. His right wrist is in a cast, which would explain the dull, aching throb coming from it. His left arm has an IV line taped to it.
Ā āSteve, Iāve given you some medicine to help keep you calm. Alright? We need you to stay calm, for the sake of the baby. Do you understand?ā Doctor Wayne says.

Steve was barefoot and empty-handed, dressed only in sweatpants and a tank top. He spun in a slow circle to show there were no weapons tucked into his waistband or hidden at the small of his back. No threat, his lowered gaze and open palms said.
It was a lie, and the other man in the room knew it. Steveās body was weapon enough.

Without waiting for an answer, he begins to strip off his gear and set it in orderly rows on the coffee table. Derringer, holster, SIG, holster, mag-pouch, IFAK, Skorpion, belt, vest ā
Steveās eyebrows steadily rise. Surely, he thinks, Bucky hadnāt brought all those grenades for him. Buckyās glare turns murderous when he notes Steveās bland amusement, but by the time heās done, dressed down to a t-shirt and cargos, he still hasnāt moved from his expectant spot in front of him, so Steve gathers up his wits and says, āUh, sure, Buck. If you want.ā
And then, without any pomp or ceremony, heās got a lap full of serum-enhanced super-soldier.

āAbout thatā¦ This wholeā¦ gift thing? Itās you, uh, trying to date me? Right? Thatās what that is?ā Bucky asks and Steve canāt help it, the clench of his chest like maybe this is where Bucky politely declines, explains that he didnāt understand how this all works and heād really rather not with Steve.
āCourtship,ā Steve confirms, nodding stubbornly instead of giving into the clenching in his chest and the swimming in his head.
āRight. Okayyyy. Right,ā Bucky says, and then he pauses for a moment, chewing on his lip in a way thatās definitely distracting but not quite distracting enough to erase the sudden feeling like a whole host of guppies has taken residence in Steveās stomach. āOn land we do that by going out on dates, yāknow? You can pick me up at seven.ā
āWait- what?ā
āI said pick me up at seven. I live above the shop, it shouldnāt exactly be hard to find.ā

Did you want him to lose the baby?ā Doctor Wayne snarls, shoving past the scientists and heading directly for Pierce. āHe gives birth now, and that child will be too weak to survive on its own. Do you have the services here to provide for a NICU baby? Because I donāt see them. I know what you need, but you need to understand that heās about this close to giving birth. If you want that baby alive and well, you let me stabilize him, get him back on his feet. Then you can send your hounds for his blood. Until then, heās under my care, and what I say goes.ā
Pierce raises his eyebrows, his hand falling from the Assetās shoulder. He looks livid; heās obviously not used to others questioning his orders.Ā
āIs that what you say, Doctor Wayne?ā
Doctor Wayne is looking paler by the minute as he realizes that he may have overstepped the line, but he doesnāt back down. He inhales sharply and jerks his head in a nod.
āIf you want that baby alive. You follow what I say. Youāll get your fluids, but itāll have to wait.ā
āHow long?ā Pierce asks, his voice dark.
āGive me 48 hours to get him to calm down and to treat his injuries. If the baby isnāt born by then, you can have your fluids.ā
Pierce scowls, but nods his head.
āFine. 48 hours, no longer.ā
āFine.ā Doctor Wayne nods his head and turns away, waving at the scientists like theyāre a flock of pigeons. āGet back, you heard the man.ā He snarls. āYou, get me a fetal doppler heart rate monitor, now!ā

Chapter 33: Drive
Rogers brings up his hands and clutches at the Assetās wrist. The Asset ignores the hard grip and tightens his own in response. Rogers' mouth opens, and he makes a choking sound as it becomes harder to breathe.Ā
āBuckyā¦stop!ā He gasps, his eyes widening, those goddamn tears leak down his cheeks, staining them with wetness. The Asset shakes his head to rid himself of the feeling hearing that name brings. He has to stay on task. The mission is imperative. He canāt let something like a name distract him.
āStop saying that name!ā The Asset snarls, letting up on his grip enough to allow Rogers to breathe, even as he pulls his left arm out of the car and tosses the keys to the side, where they land on the ground with a clatter. Reaching into his pocket, he grabs a syringe of sedative.
āBucky! Please, you know me, you have to know me!ā Rogers croaks as soon as he can get a breath in. He stares up at the Asset with imploring eyes. His whole body quakes as he speaks.Ā
The look on his face does something uncomfortable to the Asset's gut. The Asset doesnāt like it. Heās not used to feeling anything, much less whatever this is. Something is wrong with him. His body is malfunctioning. He should turn himself in for reconfiguration. It isnāt going to happen, but he should.Ā
āBucky, I can help you. Whatever they did to you, I can help you. You just have to let me go.ā

Steveās maybe ten, fifteen feet away from Sam when he hears it, a yelp of pain, followed by a soft grunt and a thud. Heart hammering, Steve comes to a stop and turns on his heel. The first thing he sees is Sam on the ground, his body twisted awkwardly, his hands splayed out in front of him while he struggles to get upright. Heās obviously fallen.Ā Ā
āSam? You alright?ā Steve questions, his brow furrowing with concern, he rushes back to the other man, and without thought for his current condition, bends down to check him out. With a grunt of effort, he manages to roll Sam onto his back.Ā

āWhat in the hellā¦ā Steve presses the button again. Only there is no response. He could have sworn it was fully charged.
Sam croaks, reaching out one hand. Steve takes his hand to comfort him, only then realizing that Sam is holding something.Ā

Tony couldn't even be insulted; the āpampered rich guyā persona was a carefully crafted persona that worked wonders in allowing people to underestimate him. It really was too bad these guys werenāt very good at seeing the evidence of his prowess, even with their friends bleeding out beside them.
Ā Ā Ā Three down. Fuck, these odds were not in Tonyās favor. Adrenaline coursed through his veins, and his lungs heaved uselessly. He coughed into his elbow, waiting for the rain of his enemy's fury to calm; they were wasting bullets if nothing, but who knew how many they had on them.
Ā Ā Ā āWeāve got live fire! Go! Alpha team, go!ā a voice echoed from the horde of radios these guys had, and Tony groaned. Great, more backup. Now, where the hell was Tonyās? It seemed like Barnes was very good at avoiding established plansāfirst the whole rooftop debacle, then this. Tony could only hope he had a good reason.
Ā Ā Ā Anytime now, Barnes. He thought, but he wasnāt going to wait to be rescued, even if he was a jog away from passing out.

He had a couple of operatives in sight, mostly helmets visible, but there was one tall ass motherfucker running his way from where the Alpha team had no doubt been waiting. A bullet took out the giant of a man with ease, dropping him like a tree with a spray of red blood from the bullet going through and through.Ā

Somethings wrong.
Then he sees it. They take a turn, and there, lying scattered across the ground, are a couple dozen zombies. Not one of them is moving. Every one of them has a fresh shot to the head. There's the distinct scent of gunpowder in the air.
Beside him, Bucky slows down and stops, bending down to look at one of the corpses.
"This wasn't us." He whispers, glancing up at Clint. "This was tactical."
Clint nods his head sharply, glancing around the area with shrewd eyes that dart from high to low, looking for movement or something out of place. He doesn't see anything, though. And if there is someone around, they could easily hide in the building above.
It's been a long time since Clint has run into another human being. The last one had almost cut his damn face off, so he's not particularly inclined to make friends with anybody. If there's one thing he's learned in the apocalypse, it's that there's no such thing as friends anymore. It's survive or die. Steal or steal fromāfight or flight.
But this isn't just one, this is many. Clint can tell by the bullet shells. That one there is a 9mm, while the one next to it is a shotgun shell, and the one next to that is a steel casing, which doesn't account for the one next to it, which is a brass casing.
So, four guns at the least. If not more, judging by the looks of it. He's inclined to say more, off instinct. This is a team. He backs up slowly, moving into the shadows under the sidewalk of the building.
Bucky stands up and follows after, his rifle raised to his shoulder and searching. They both stand still. Clint can't even hear Bucky's breath, can barely see him, the way he melts into the shadows.
"I'm going to scout ahead. Maybe get to higher ground, see what I can see." Bucky says after a quiet moment, his voice short and clipped. He shifts, dropping his duffel bag down onto the ground.
"You go left. I'll take the right." Clint signs back, already dropping his bag onto the ground beside Bucky's. "We'll meet back here in half an hour."
Bucky doesn't look pleased. Clint's not too pleased either; he doesn't like the idea of splitting up, but he can't just stay here, and they need to get the layout of the land. There could be a new enemy in their backyard, either that or a friend, which doesn't seem too likely, but Clint prefers to look on the bright side sometimes.

Steve stares, wide-eyed. The room is decorated to an inch of its life with large balloon sculptures in pink and blue. Streamers hang from the ceiling in swirling masses. Individual letters hang on a wall declaring āWelcome Baby Rogersā. There are tables full of snacks, drinks, and gifts, and the seating has been rearranged to create a large circular area for everyone to gather.
Ā Everyone he could possibly know is there. Clint, Natasha, Bruce, and Thor. Beside Thor stands the Warriors Three, Fandral, Hogun, Volstagg, and Lady Sif. Jane stands on his other side, his arm slung around her shoulder, with Darcy by her. Behind them are Fury and Maria Hill, with a distinct hole where Phil Coulson should have been, and to the right are Pepper and Happy, standing together and clapping their hands. Sam is there, grinning larger than life, and even Jonah and Thomas are there, shouting out āsurpriseā with everyone else. His publicist, Alyssa, stands to the side, making herself unobtrusive, along with a gentleman whoās holding a camera. They stay out of the way of the main thoroughfare, smiling cheerfully.
āAww, you didnāt blindfold him!ā Clint shouts, waving his hands in the air, exasperatedly.Ā
āYeah, wasnāt gonna do that. Heād probably pop the baby out just to spite us.ā Tony says, drawing Steve into the room.
āYeah, I donāt do surprises,ā Steve admits, laughing and breaking away from Tony to begin greeting his guests. He waves to his team, knowing they wonāt mind if he focuses on the others in the room first. āI canāt believe you all came!ā He says, truly stunned. Heād expected a small gathering, but this was something else.
āWe would not miss this occasion, whether it was in this galaxy or the next,ā Thor says, stepping forward and wrapping him in a bear hug. His arms are long enough that Steveās belly doesn't get in the way. Darcy quickly follows after, pulling Jane along. Steve laughs as heās swarmed by warm arms and the scent of perfume.Ā
āWell, thank you. I donāt know what to say.ā
āItās okay. We donāt either.ā Darcy declares, clapping him pretty solidly on the side, for how small she is, she steps back, throwing her hair over her shoulder. āYouāre looking good, for a pregnant man. Not my cup of tea, but Iād still drink you up!āĀ
Steve bursts out in a laugh.
āYouāre looking good, too, Darcy. Thank you for coming. It wouldnāt be a party without you.ā
āItās a grand thing, a birth announcement.ā Fandral, the bolder of the warriors three, declares, stepping forward once Steve breaks away from Thor, Jane, and Darcy. āWe are deeply honored to be here.ā He waves behind himself to encompass the other two.
āYes, Captain, may you be blessed with the strength of the Mother Queen, Freda.ā Lady Sif declares, bowing shortly to him. Steve bows back.
āThank you. I do hope so.ā Steve says, not sure what exactly that means, but grateful for the blessing nonetheless.
He moves on, shaking Furyās hand, then Mariaās.Ā
āYouāre looking very pregnant, Steve.ā Maria declares, smiling and raising a glass of wine to him.

Tony reacts about as well to the news that Steveās moving out as can be expected. He gripes. He whines. He tries to throw money at the situation. Through it all, Steve stands his groundā¦wellā¦mostly.
āI canāt believe I agreed to stay until after the baby was born.ā Steve groans, staring at his notebook and drawing idly with his pencil, his fingers moving the fine stick across the page with a slow grace thatās strange for someone his size. Heās sitting, curled up, on Natashaās couch, a hot-pad on his back, and a blanket draped across his lap. He has Natasha to thank for the hot-pad. It is possibly the best thing for his lower back pain, and heās not sure why he hadnāt thought of it sooner.Ā
āItās honestly a good idea. Youāre going to need the help, especially in the beginning.ā Natasha says from where sheās seated at her pottery wheel. Her hands are covered with red clay as she crouches down over the thing, throwing a pot with surprising ease.Ā
Steve watches her hands work the clay, first up, then down. She digs her finger into the center and presses the clay out, forming a little bowl before his very eyes.Ā

Chased by grief over the loss of Bucky. Steve takes the Valkyrie into the ice in an attempt to stop Hydra.
70 years later, Steve wakes up in a new time, with new enemies and new friends, but the mission is the same. Bring down the enemy, no matter what. When a mysterious figure known as San Dapth makes his way onto the scene, Steve and the Avengers step forward and heed the call to arms. Together, they have to face down San Dapth and bring him to justice.
It's in their fight against San Dapth that Steve discovers something terrifying. He's pregnant with Bucky Barnes' baby. Now he must learn to live this new life without the man he loves.
Hydra learns of Steve's pregnancy. And they'll do whatever it takes to get to his unborn child, including unleashing their greatest asset from the iceāthe Winter Soldier.
When Steve discovers the Winter Soldier and Bucky Barnes are one and the same, he must fight to bring back the man he loves.

In the end, they check out four separate apartments. Steve canāt put a finger on what bothers him about each one, but none stick out as a place where heād want to raise his child. At one, the walls are too thin, and the neighbors are too loud. Heād drive them bonkers with a screaming baby in an instant. At another, the kitchen is a dump, and thereās what heās fairly sure is mold growing in the corners. When he was younger, he would have thought of it as something else, but for a man whoād been living on Tony Starkās dime, it looks like a pigsty.Ā
Jenny is starting to get impatient. He can tell, but they decide to try one more place.
And itās a hit.
A two-floor condo, with a back garden, and a beautiful brick facade. Steveās immediately smitten. The front doorstep is littered with plants that are still in bloom. He steps inside, and itās quaint, with more bricks on the walls and wallpaper thatās a little outdated, by his estimation, but that lends a well-loved air to the place. Steve instantly relaxes, he shoves his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket, and grins, sharing a look with Sam. Sam smiles back.
āYou like it?ā Sam asks.
āYeah,ā Steve admits, ignoring Jenny and slowly walking through the front entryway. Itās a two-story unit with the bedrooms upstairs. Thereās a small kitchen done in a charming shade of yellow, with old oak cabinets painted a soft cream color. On the first floor is a small but functional bathroom. Strolling to the stairway, he takes the stairs upwards and comes up to the landing. It looks down over the first floor. Sam waves to him from below, where heās talking to Jenny. Steve turns around and walks down the hall, stopping at a doorway. He turns the knob. The first bedroom he enters is medium-sized. He can just envision his little passenger sleeping in a crib in the corner, with their toys scattered around on the floor, and a rocking chair for when he has to breastfeed. Maybe the landlord would let him paint the walls.Ā
The next room is larger, with a walk-in closet that will more than compensate for the fact that he will have to store his gear in it. If he puts his bed in the corner, he should have room for a desk and the Protector setup. Itās a better place than heās ever had. Bucky would be going out of his mind at the very idea of him renting it. Theyād have never had the money to do so back then.
Steve bites his lip. He likes to think that no matter how much Bucky would protest, he would have liked it too.Ā
Thereās a commotion at the bedroom door, and Steve turns, glancing at Jenny and Sam as they step inside.
āThis is the one. Iāll take it.ā Steve says, grinning at Sam.
