There’s an entire literary genre built around the cosmopolitan who loves the Global South—as long as the Global South loses with elegance and dignity. Ishaan Tharoor has written a masterpiece in that genre.
He makes a list of the World Cup’s "charming countries": the Japanese cleaning the stadium, the kind Koreans, Vozinha, the noble loser. All lovable, endearing, unforgettable. All eliminated.
The truth is that this kind of picturesque admiration comes with conditions. The "other" is worth celebrating only as long as they remain endearing. And more often than not, they’re considered endearing because they lose and pose no threat to power.
Tharoor built his "love" for Argentina around its decline: hyperinflation, chaos, a team supposedly suffering from injustice. That’s an aesthetic relationship with the periphery. The moment the periphery stops being picturesque and starts winning, the toy breaks.
His use of Eduardo Galeano’s quote about Maradona and Napoli makes the point obvious: it celebrates a dark South humiliating the white North that had despised it. Then he uses that same quote to argue that Argentina is now the North. That’s where the unspoken assumption slips in: the South American who "looks" European somehow no longer counts as a victory for the Global South.
Argentina is part of the Global South whether he likes it or not. That isn’t something he gets to decide based on whether he finds the country sympathetic. On top of that, he argues that Argentina has become part of the establishment because Milei was supposedly going to be sitting next to Trump in the stands (which now doesn't even appear to be true). It’s exactly the opposite.
An Argentine invited to a stadium in New Jersey, sitting beside the people who hold power, is about as peripheral a scene as you can imagine.
Mistaking proximity for power is a basic analytical error. We were never less sovereign than when we were at our friendliest with those in power. The embrace is submission without friction—a surrender. The problem isn't that Argentina somehow became "bad." The reality is much simpler: Tharoor liked an Argentina that lost.
That says far more about him than it does about Argentina.
the recent trend to hate on argentina and to characterize doing so as woke has allowed many first worlders to show their true colors. as soon as you all seem to get the 'green light' that hating on a third world country is acceptable you stop hiding your disdain and xenophobia. this and the "calling ice" jokes show you don't actually give two shits about racism or cheating or whatever, you just want a socially acceptable way to hate on latin americans
This is wild because they're absolutely copying Brazilians, who will say anything to annoy Argentinias during football season, but like. We have a rivalry. This is what we do. Argentinians are awful to us and we are awful back. Sometimes this awfulness reaches levels that shouldn't (Argentinians get really racist and we start wishing they'll starve) but it's still very much a two way street. A fair match even when both of us bring guns to a knife fight.
Americans don't have that. You even don't play football. You don't get to be cruel to a country that your country helped destroy. You don't get to say they're "nazi land" when your president was the one who put him in power. Argentinians and Brazilians lay on the same shit together and are having a mud fight. Americans are the ones who shoved us into the shit in the first place.

Knowing that Christopher Nolan has no idea of women’s inner lives AND that he knows his own happiness is completely reliant on his wife, who is also his boss, without whom he would be creatively and emotionally adrift, suggest that his marriage is this intensely spiritual, almost theological type of femdom. Not unlike the guy who defrauded Harvard with a fake “Jesus’ wife” papyrus less as a financial fraud than as an extension of his belief that his own wife, with whom he was in a femdom relationship, was the reincarnation of Mary Magdalene. But Nolan is, I guess, a more pagan iteration, in which Emma Thomas is like a puzzling oracle to whom her husband must keep making a variety of sacrifices to please. A sort of cargo cult femdom. I’m very happy for them both, to be clear.
would you ever want to share a book/essay etc list about dolls? saw you reference a few writings in your response to other asks would be cool if you shared the stuff you’ve read. I have a very similar fascination

i may be missing some but i can add to this. i may put together a list of media/technology/surveillance as well as i have quite a few collected. also i highly recommend the book “what do pictures want?” by w.j. t. mitchell. not related to dolls but it talks on the agency of the image which relates so much to dolls imo.

One Direction as Supernatural Creatures (x)
WHY YOU GOTTA DO NIALL LIKE THAT
date of origin: 1st of november, 2013.
You couldn't make this up. Rolin Jones 'hates writing about identity' and yet has was so desperate to adapt a book that's very introspective and all about identity. This actually explains a lot about this season fixating on the rockstar part and ignoring Lestat's backstory and most of the psychological and interpersonal dimension that make up the majority of the book. Rolin saying things like he didn't want to include much of the Nicki stuff because they already kind of hit those beats with Louis. All the character-focused scenes being presented as an exposition dump. It's all about plot mechanics and entertaintment for him. Rolin literally didn't care about the actual core of the story and was resentful for having to write about it at all
