Anbu sub au but sasuke doesn’t end up killing itachi for whatever reason and it’s eventually found out that itachi did the massacre under orders so itachi is brought back
But of course itachi is under a probation period both for other shinobis peace of mind but also cause itachi needed serious psychological and medical help
He plans on going back to anbu so he can do missions without having to work with people who will be scared of him
Conveniently he joins right around the time Naruto becomes hokage
He joins as a anonymous new recruite under a different code name so he gets the survey again but this time it’s the survey for the adult anbu
He fills it out and gives the survey to the anbu stationed outside his room and waits patiently for someone to come get him
Naruto ends up coming to get him Naruto having ended up helping with scenes when he heard about it after becoming hokage
Itachi expects this to happen like last time him not able to reach the relaxation the other anbu talked about
It doesn’t naruto is easily able to get him to enter subspace and itachi lets his mind rest for the first time since he was like four
Apparently spending the entirety of his teens and early adulthood surrounded by unstable S ranks and being forced to decide to do nothing to stop the terrible things they’re doing wasn’t great for his long term capacity to want to make more decisions / trust the decisions he makes. Not to mention the whole “killed family” and “set brother on a path of hatred that made him abandon his village” decision.
Hes terribly relived when the control is finally taken from him for the first time in his life. No expectations or decisions. Just obedience and gentle hands and blue blue eyes. He doesn’t even realize he’s crying until calloused fingers wipe away his tears and his hokage makes soft shushing noises and pulls him closer into his warmth. Itachi doesn’t even twitch at the hands getting so close to his eyes. He just melts and shakes and cries until he’s all worn out. Naruto doesn’t stop praising him through it even once. So good. So intelligent. Made the best choices he could when he was put in a hard spot. His poor ANBU was mishandled by his past owners. It’s not his fault the trust was misplaced. He should have been able to obey without thought. He should have been taken care of. He did so well surviving the akatsuki. Making sure his brother was strong enough to survive. Passing on info to jiraiya. Coming back to the village as soon as he could. So loyal. So good.
