Work.

                      Minds, like color, play tricks. My work plays with the tricks of color. My abstract work is deeply rooted in color field and monochrome painting, except, instead of being disinterested my work demands the viewer to confront and question their embodied experience. Figuration in my art is used to encourage cognitive dissonance, using saturated saccharine colors to depict absurdly grotesque femme-fatales. These cellulite enriched beings stand sadly amidst happy, pretty colors, resigned to their tragic purpose. Their absurdity emerges from their oozing grotesque bodies, jabbing at what is considered sexual and the culture's tendency to reduce the female read body only as a vessel for bodily fluids. The readable body parts act more as an intrusive interruption of the visual field of the playful colors, giving the viewer clues that something more sinister is unfolding before their eyes. Watercolor is often seen as a “practice medium” Oil is serious, water color is for the studio, grandmas, and hobbyists- it is the most feminine of painting mediums, it is not traditionally monumental.  So when benign traditionally passive female genitalia are turned into monsters on a grand scale- multiple stereotypes are turned on their heads.  But by having a monster that is more pathetic than frightening, they are dejected, embarrassed for what they are, painfully aware of their absurd lack of agency. They are the folly femme fatale in jester’s colors.
