i know i shouldn’t, but god, i have some ideas floating around for a yokai connected to shadow puppetry and other parts of japanese theater

i still have to figure out what yokai i want for the main oc in question, but they run a theater in wano that focuses on shadow puppetry and noh theater performances. some of their “workers” / closest confidants consist of kage onna, ao andon, and other lesser yokai

#OOC.#TBD.#i picked noh theater specifically because of how their plays revolve around spirits and demons and all that #the irony is 100% intentional

even without kisuke's devil fruit, sora is able to escape the shop unnoticed, footsteps light and silent as she slips down the nearby alley and into the shadows; over the last twenty years, urahara shōten was never a terribly busy shop, yet that didn't mean the shōgun or his men didn't have eyes on it : in fact, sora was certain of that fact. it's with a practiced ease, not only of having tread these paths many times before, but a history of going on the run—it mattered not how long it had been, they still remembered well the first time they dashed through time with … [ twenty years, and it still hurt. ]

as she drew closer to the agreed upon meeting spot, sora checked her surroundings once more, to ensure not only had she not been followed, but none were around to watch as she touched her left hand to the wall of the seeming ruins of the building she approached; the surface of the broken beams rippled, before shifting into that of a pair of hanging curtains. stepping through, they lifted the hem of their kimono as they crossed the threshold, the curtains vanishing and leaving naught but the downed beams in their wake.

" … 小太陽、小太陽、遊びにおいでよ〜！ " to any who may hear it, it would sound like little more than a children's song : kotaiyō, kotaiyō, asobi ni oideyo—little sun, little sun, come out and play! but, for the one it was meant for, it was a meant to be a signal that it was safe to come out. upon finally seeing @onifreed, sora steps close, fingers reaching up to gently touch the young woman's face, carefully turning it left and right to ensure even from a cursory glance she was unharmed. " jitsugetsu-sama—it is good to see you again … how are you faring? "

Hiyori's going to have to thank Denjirō ( again ) for his efforts in making this happen. He's shielded her through the streets, remaining ever vigilant as he guides her through the rougher edges of the Flower Capital. Moving about as herself is a risky move, especially with the shōgun keeping a close eye on his most beloved Komurasaki. Even with a cloak hiding her bright hair and face, the threat of exposure and ruining everything they've been building over the last twenty years remains... but she trusts Sora, and she trusts Denjirō. And so, she waits within these crumbled walls.

An all too familiar song beckons the young woman out of the nook in the abandoned building, hand leaving her protector's arm to greet her long awaited guest. As soon as the handmaiden appears, the oiran smiles. ❝ Sora-san... ❞ One hand picks up the hem of her kimono as she all but runs with girlish delight to their side.

❝ It has been far too long since we met last. I am... ❞ There's a moment of hesitancy where her pride clashes with the agony lingering in her heart. This always happens, regardless of the months that have passed without seeing each other. Without them even trying, Hiyori all but crumbles in their presence. A single tear falls down her cheek, even as her smile remains. ❝ I am doing as well as I can, despite our circumstances. How are you, Sora-san? ...and where is Urahara-san? Did he not accompany you? ❞

while there's a lot from her human days that kureha doesn't miss, having to wear a jūnihitoe every day is at the top. the style is gorgeous, yes, but a nightmare in terms of practicality. they were heavy and a pain to walk and move in. she's been grateful for the existence of the kimono for a few centuries now

she's the smallest of her family unit at a whopping 5'2! tsubasa is over a foot taller than her ( 6'5 ), and hanamizuki and kaede are nearly there themselves ( 6'2 and 5'10 respectively )

she loves to play the koto. she learned how to play from her father and she made many friends during her human days as a result of playing. she doesn't own one currently, but she wishes she did

kureha's favorite kind of tea is hōjicha

although i associate her with red, orange, and yellow ( autumn colors ), her favorite color is blue. it reminds her of the sea and the port she grew up near

you know... there's something so poetic and sad about modern day inhabitants of wano who grew up hearing the legend of sarashinahime, but never noticing that the hime, the demoness of the tale walks among them and has been for centuries

#KUREHA: HEADCANONS.#and furthermore: anytime kureha hears people praising her former husband for 'slaying the beast'#she shrugs it off or plays along #the legend's so much bigger than her own humble existence #and she uses that for her and her family to blend in and survive

idk why this hit me as hard as it did, but i've been thinking about my female muses and how much i crave seeing women in media with layers of complexity ( that both rejects and embraces womanhood and traditional gender roles )
