Have You Had Your Serial?
From the popularity of the television series Dexter, to the many seasons of CSI, it is clear that audiences love âkiller crimes.â I too enjoy the occasional episode of Cops, but crime dramas are generally not my entertainment of choice.
I am happy to report however, that I finally discovered a true crime story that kept me thoroughly entertained. Serial -The Podcast: a 12 part episodic reveal of information gathered on the murder of Hae Min Lee, in which a myriad of questions have surfaced surrounding the guilt or innocence of her convicted killer, Adnan Syed.
Haven't heard Serial yet? Here's episode 1
Like crime shows, podcasts have never been my thing either, but I binged through all twelve hour-long episodes far too fast. I was left desperately aching for something more. Regardless of its conclusion, I am not the only one seeking more from this real-life crime drama.
The internet is teeming with fans reliving each episode, analyzing the events, and trying to solve the crime the host herself (Sarah Koenig) is baffled by. Even the slew of YouTube reviews have gained just as much of a following as the podcast itself.
Trending Serial video on objective journalism.
All of the attention on this case not only brings up questions about the judicial system, but also on the capitalization of a criminal trial. The creators of this series are making money off of individuals dealing with murdered loved ones, and lengthy prison sentences. Extremely personal information thus becomes public knowledge. And in light of its success, this kind of exposure for the sake of entertainment purposes will continue.Â
HBO has followed in Serial's footsteps with The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, a six-part examination of the reclusive millionaire at the heart of three killings spanning four decades.
"Robert Durst, the scion of a New York real estate empire, has long been a suspect in the notorious 1982 disappearance of his wife, Kathie. Further suspicion was raised with the unsolved killing of his confidante, Susan Berman, thought to be a key witness in the investigation into Kathie's disappearance in 2000, as well as the subsequent killing and dismemberment of a neighbor in Galveston, Texas. Durst has consistently maintained his innocence and remains a free man today." - HBOÂ Â Â
The first episode reveals the high profile case that stemmed into the creation of the Hollywood film All Good Things. Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst glam up the screen with their dramatic romance, and the film pushes the generic rich man meets poor girl plot-line.Â
Check out the trailer for All Good Things.
Andrew Jarecki is the director of both this fictional re-telling and the HBO documentary; as such Iâm sure he is extremely concerned with Robertâs innocence⌠BUT he is probably even more interested in continually milking money out of the sensationalized case.
Serial itself is far from a slouch in the income department. All the hype has led to a crowd funded season two. How much was actually pooled into this has yet to be revealed. While it gave away its episode content for free, it made something good enough to bring in the cash as an aftermath.
The realism of these stories is what is really drawing in the masses. It allows us to become detectives, pondering the various pieces of evidence that are brought to our attention. Because a real man being charged with murder holds more weight than a fictional one.
Putting all these surfacing moral dilemmas aside, at least we can interact with all the others seeking answers across the web. Uploaded videos discussing our addictive installments of crime dramas will satiate our obsession until the next episode. All ready to watch on mobile devices, tablets, computer, and various other screens.
ABC News Report on Adnanâs appeal.
This immense interest in the Serial podcast has significantly impacted Adnanâs situation. It will be interesting to see where public opinion falls on the equally compelling story of Robert Durst from The Jinx . Stay tuned!
